Here's the deal. A lot of people are saying TCF steals money, they have outrageous fees, and they have terrible customer service. CHeck this out: http://www.mybanktracker.com/Wells-Fargo/Reviews
That is Wells Faro's review page and people are saying the same things that people are saying here... Maybe it's not the bank, maybe it's the customers. I have a TCF account and a Wells Fargo account and guess what. I've had no problems. Look. If you go negative you get charged a fee of $35-40 (per item). Yes it's ridiculous but that goes for EVERY bank!!!! If you manage your account and never go negative guess what, you dont get fees! :D
To all you people who just make a deposit and then go swipe your card a million times it's no wonder why you get fees. Then you have the gall to say that a bank is stealing your money? Of course they're gonna charge you, they just covered your ass when you swiped your card and you had no money. If an overdraft fee is the entire reason you changed baks, you wasted your time and energy because guess what. The bank you just switched to charges overdraft fees too. As for service charges, pay attention when you open your account. They literally tell you what you can do to avoid fees, and they give you all the information in case you forget.. If you dont want check printing fees then enroll in online statements. And actually look at your statements too because sometimes banks have to make changes to comply with government regulations. They do in fact tell you when your account is changing or if a policy is changing.
Also don't expect to be able to use your check card after you deposit a check or if you do a cash deposit in the ATM (which you shouldn't do a cash deposit into the ATM unless it can scan the cash electronically). Sometimes funds aren't available right away. Sometimes with larger dollar amounts it takes longer. If you don't endorse your check right it may take longer too. One more thing, if you absolutely have to pay over a check to someone, you both need to go to the bank together. A teller needs to watch you sign it correctly, and document IDs proving you are paying it over. Anybody could find a signed check and sign underneath it and say it was paid over to them.
It's not bad customer service just because you don't get what you want. Good customer service DOES NOT mean getting everything you want as a customer. It means handling customers with a positive attitude. When your yelling at a teller because you can't have fees reversed do you really expect good customer service? Of course it was your fault. You didn't manage your account and keep your balance positive. If the bank messed up, they would b happy to reverse a fee. But banks don't usually mess up and if they do they fix it right away. I am completely satisified with all banks especially where I bank at and must commend employees at these banks because they probably deal with angry customers all day long.

I had a no fee checking account with TCF. I recently noticed a fee of $1.95 per month being billed to my account for check image fee. This is for enclosing a scanned copy of checks with my statement. It is ridiculous to charge me for this. The bank has to scan the checks anyway, no extra effort on their part. But they imposed this charge stealthily. By the time I noticed it they had billed this fee for 6 months already. I called them, and they agreed to stop billing me this amount in the future and terminate the check image ??service?. But they refused to refund the 6 months of fees already billed. Their attitude was that I should have noticed the fees sooner and called sooner. They told me that I must look carefully at the small print on every piece of junk mail they send me, because sometimes they contain warnings of new fees that will be charged to my no fee account. If I miss this small print it is my fault, and they can steal money from my account because I did not notice.

The gift cards start to deduct $5 a moth after 6 months-- this is horribly wrong and I highly recommend anyone needing a gift card not to go through TCF.

I was given a TCF Giftcard and spent $4.98, and in about six months the card was depleted, gone, emptied.

What a nasty shock

Avoid TCF Cards at all costs--- Save Over $35 with any other card!

There are MANY negative, unprofessional and unethical issues to list about TCF Bank... and MANY that bank regulators and state senators should be made aware of... but frankly, I am most appalled with the discrimination that takes place at the Homewood bank location AND seems to be absolutely encouraged by its Manager! It is with GREAT regret to advertise that the (majority) employees of this bank are RACISTS! If you are a smiling, friendly and respectful white customer... that handles their financial business with TCF Bank... you should expect to receive unfriendly and unprofessional service and treatment at this bank location! In a time where we expect that modern life exists in a progressive and equal world... and a mindset that life MUST live progressively and equally to THRIVE AND SURVIVE... there remains a small group of ignorant people (atleast at this bank location!) that regress to such a low level and standard of existence! Shame on these people... for they are only a contribution to what is WRONG and are nothing but Bigots! On every level... DO NOT BANK WITH TCF BANK!!!

Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.

Please DO NOT EVER BANK WITH TCF !!!! They manipulated my account to where I owed them over $250 in fees that I didn't owe for Insufficient Funds. Every time I called customer service, I got a different answer, from each agent that I spoke to, but they were always acting like I did something wrong, not them. I'm shocked this bank is still in business. The branch in Skokie, Illinois is a joke the way they treat their customers. I am disabled. This is my direct deposit Social Security Disability check they are messing with. They take advantage of the people that don't have allot of money so they can find ways to fine them..They don't care about their customers and have the nerve to show it .

My daughter closed her accont as she went overseas. However, there was a refund that TCF had no problems to accept it on a closed acount. The next day I went to the branch where the account was opened, with a check signed by my daughter and they want to charge $10.00 to cash the check. They told me to go to my bank and cash the check, and I did that. But they did not honored the check, and I get stuck with a $25.00 returned check fee. So I go back to the TCF branch, but now they will not pay the check unless the accont owner is there(she is overseas, remember?). So I ask what to do next. Well, they said that when my daughter comes back in the summer she can go and claim the money, or whatever is left, because they still charge a maintenance fee on a closed account. KIND OF LIKE STEALING MY DAUGHTER'S MONEY.

I was lured by the 100.00 promotion. Mistake! The website sucks. Who does the web site? First graders? Very user UN-friendly!
$3.00 foreign ATM withdrawls billed once a month to insure your account overdraws. Having a substantial $6000.00 plus balance in savings doesn't mean Jack, they don't have the "ability" to transfer money from savings to checking to cover overdrafts. What is this? the 1800's? BAM! $35.00 overdraft fee. I hate the BIG banks, but can't recommend this bank either.

We opened our checking statement the day after we received it and found an unauthorized electronic deduction for $150+. The next morning, Sat.,we went to the local branch to ask for help in getting this fraudulent transaction reversed. The 1st teller ,after confiring with another employee, told us to come back Monday. We work weekdays. can't take time off. A third employee came to our aid, took down the facts and told us we'd hear something on Monday. Late Monday the employee called and said no answer yet, and she'd be off on Tuesday, however another branch person would follow up with us. Tuesday, no follow up call came. Wednesday we called the Branch and spoke to the employee who helped Sat and Monday. She said she would contact the "adjustments" department, we could not as customers. An hour or two later she called back and told us we were on our own, that we'd have to some how get the money back ourselves. My next action is a letter to ; Neil Brown, the CEO at TCF, and the Banking Regulators, and Dick Durbin, our ILL.Senator. It'll cost TCF way more than $150. to answer to the banking regualtors and Sen Durbin. You can bet they don't have customer service people responding to Official Inquiries. My suggestion is for everyone slighted by TCF to report them to their elected reps and banking regulators. This was an easy one, the fraudsters changed the date to Jan. on a electronic check that was paid in Sept, Then they resubmitted it. It even had the original Sept. Check number . If you need banking in the worst way, TCF is your bank.

Having once worked for them. I opened and account. I had to close it back in 2005 as i needed a bank with more national locations. I was a victim of check fraud and had to pay the penalties. I worked out with the loss preventions to pay back the bad check (1 yr AFTER I closed my account) and the return fee of 30 would be refunded and I would be cleared. Well this didn't happen and I was sent to collections for 30 (which i had no clue had happened). The collection agency compound interest and last charge TCF for one year after I was sent (2006) and I now owed 41 (still no notice or information was sent to me. Fast forward to today 2011. I opened a new account with them (not knowing that I was in collections). I had the account for mnts when I called in to find out why my account was not credited for a new account opening. Where I was then told i owed them 41 dollars.
I asked why they couldn't tell me. To shorten this up I found out from the collection agency that it was one year of compounded interest from 30 dollars, but the account was inactive and hadn't been touched in four year (again still no notice in those 4 yrs). He corrected it and then told me that over a 4yr period 30 dollars with interest was now 200. He was also amazed and advised me to call TCF have them just settle the thirty as no notice or information had been sent out and we could call it even and remove me from the credit list.
In calling TCF customer service i was told that the collection agency had to call (in which the collection agency said that TCF had to call etc). I tried to explain to them where the 41 dollars came from. However, "According to our records you owe us 41 dollars we can not see your past history so have no way to verify your story". I have a credit score in the 700's and have only been charge two over draft fees in my history of banking. So over 30 dollars, poor customer service, loss of records and the inability to compromise they have lost my business.

TCF totally took care of a problem I caused. I cashed a check from my wife's TCF account and signed my name when she should have signed it. I wasn't listed on the account and the check was declined after I deposited it in another account. The result bounced 7 checks to the tune of $200 from my bank. A few calls didn't get me anywhere so we both went to the branch. I quickly caught my error when I saw the signature. I asked to speak with a corporate manager. They were very nice and put $200 in my account as restitution for the $200 I owed my bank. My bank, 5/3 is good but, they would never agree to reimburse us the way TCF did.

first day: overdraft fee 70 dollars which I paid immediately
second day: my account says -140 I make a payment so my balance went +2 dollars
third day: I call this morning It say my account is now -103 dollars!!!

the transactions are 1.00, 2.00,1.49 and 2.00 dollars
Yesterday I spoke with the bank employee and she knew nothing, did not know any answers, seemed to be bored so I asked to speak to the manager, but she will be there until Friday
they are charging me fees on fees already paid
last month I also noticed a $ 9 transaction
I did ask the bank employee but as usual she knew nothing, now I realize that it is the $ 9 they started charging for my checking account

Unbelievably poor customer service, as if they are reading from a "book of rules" with no regard for customers. TCF uses unconventional and unfair practices to squeeze money from their customers' accounts. Do not use this bank.

They don't deserve any stars. They closed my account w/o telling me, and now I have to wait and see if my direct deposit will go through to my account or get sent back, while I have bills and rent to pay in like two days. I honestly dislike TCF Bank with a passion. The hours and locations are convenient, but the real business side of it is horrible. The guy on the phone actually said, "Once the decision is made for your direct deposit, you can go into one of our branches and re-open your account if you chose so." UM... NO???

The guy on the phone actually said, "Once the decision is made for your direct deposit, you can go into one of our branches and re-open your account if you chose so." UM... NO???

Awful customer service and poor availability of online banking, bill pay, and ATMS. I work for TCF in corporate and recently moved all my accounts to a credit union due to TCF's bad business practices, which have become so cut-throat, even as an employee and aware of the rules, I feel robbed of my money. I no longer feel my money is safe sitting in TCF bank and am ashamed I work for a company who's big wigs pump money into the Republican party as they laugh about targeting low-income, urban customers for all they are worth.

TCF bank is by far the worst bank I have ever dealt with in my life. I had an account with TCF for 23 years!!! Yep, that's right people 23 YEARS!!! I left this account open for times when I went back to Milwaukee to take small funds out while I was visiting my family. I moved from one state to another and I discovered that while I moved they sent mail to my old address. Apparently they sent me a letter that said that if I did not have 500.00 in my checking account that they would begin taking 9.95 per month out of my account. I did not receive the letter. I found out that they took money out for 7 MONTHS!!!! Yep, that is 69.65. I called them up and explained that I had never gotten their letter. They told me "sorry buddy" nothing we can do about that. I asked to speak to a customer service person's boss and she told me she didn't have one. She told me to send a letter to the president of the company. Well, now I live in another state so I told them that I wanted to close out my account because they were literally stealing money from me. They said that I had to either show up in person or send a notarized letter to them, and I f i didn't and just took all of the money out of my account that they would continue to charge me and bill me until I closed the account. they would not even agree to stop the next withdrawl of 9.95 that they were going to take out in 2 days so that I could get that notarized letter to them. IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH TCF BANK PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ONE....EVER!!! TCF STEALS MONEY FROM PEOPLE AND WILL NOT GIVE IT BACK!!! they are the worst company I have ever dealt with.

I received a $40 TCF Visa Gift Card for my birthday 10 mos ago. My kids gave it to me so that I could use it to do something fun. I was able to go to a discount movie on Christmas Day, using $8.00 of my $40. I called TCF today to check the balance, intending to go out to eat as my school schedule has settled down a bit recently. I was told by customer service that after 6 mos from purchase there is a $5 per month service change in accordance with the terms and conditions printed on the back of the card. Consequently, I looked on the back of the card to find the aforementioned print, much to my suprise and dismay. I asked the Cust Serv Rep if any exception or adjustment could be made, assuming the expense to TCF to carry my account was likely only a few cents a month and that I, nor the purchasers of the card, were aware of the proverbial fine print . The CSR replied, in a monotone that gave away his weariness defending the infinite number of unfair transactions executed by TCF Bank, that the terms and conditions were not negotiable (paraphrased), and that the $4 balance on my card is only good for about another month. Robbery! TCF Bank has a susbtantial presence in the Metro Detroit Area which is where I plan to locate after I finish school. I was going to consider putting my account with TCF because they bought Great Lakes Bank a few years ago where I banked prior to the buyout by TCF Bank. Forget about it!! TCF had a chance to make an accomodation to compensate for their devious and outrageous dealing and possible gain a new banking customer. I now know the culture of TCF Bank is one of greed and deceipt. SAY NO TO TCF BANK!! I guess we may surmise this is how TCF was able to return all the TARP funds extended to them and thereby minimize scrunity by the Feds!

My irresponsible ex-wife had a lot of overdraft and order of transaction problems others report here. But her financial life was ridiculous, she doesn't plan ahead for anything. Of course, she always got angry when I mentioned that she probably shouldn't have spent the funds before they were in the account and expected a cash deposit at an ATM to protect her.

That said, TCF's practices of manipulating the order of transactions are shady and should be investigated. I also wish they would either abandon or make free their debit card overdraft protection. It costs nothing for a bunch of computers to adjust some numbers on my online ledger.

At the same time, TCF is one of the few banks that didn't take bailout money from the Fed back in 2008-09. I'm personally more in favor of TCF's practices as they stand, even if they punish the irresponsible, than corporate welfare at the expense of everyone.

TCF did not inform me of the change from Free Checking to Not Free Checking. If you are looking for a bank, DO NOT USE TCF BANK. As you can see from the other reviews, many people were ROBBED of their money - and the bank won't give us our money back. DO NOT USE TCF BANK if you want to keep your money. DO NOT USE TCF BANK if you do want surprises with your money. DO NOT USE TCF BANK because they will literally ROB you of your money. TCF BANK IS STEALING MONEY.

TOTAL a-holes. Here's my question.........WHY would you begin charging the $10 fee to customers who have LESS than $500 in their account and call it a freaking "maintainance fee" ? Wouldn't common sense tell you that it's wrong to charge the people with limited money? Why not charge the people with thousands of dollars in their account -- because after all, wouldn't MORE money require more "maintainance" ????

They held my CASH deposit as "pending" for 5 DAYS, finally "cleared" it on the 5th day, and on that very same day, they arranged 5 debits to be deducted, which means the 5 debits PLUS a 35.00 overdraft fee for each one. My online banking even shows that on 7/30, there was a $120 deposit, and on the SAME DAY, 5 debits, and then right underneath THOSE, a whopping $175 overdraft fee, again, ALL ON 7/30. I don't get paid for a week to even be able to start climing back up to ZERO, and they are sending me threatening letters that state if I don't pay it in full within 2 days, I will be turned over to collections. WHAT!!!?!? IT'S BEEN 10 DAYS! I'm furious, and already reported them to BBB. Everyone else should too, if you have a legit complaint! If I could give -5 stars, I would.

As with other reviewers, I too feel that this bank is deceptive. I opened up a 50+ checking/savings account. I have tried for 3 months to understand why I keep getting charged a service fee for my savings account. I keep 100.00 and was charged the fee. I called. Customer Service reversed the 4.00 fee and said they didn't know why this happened. Happened again the next month. I went into the branch and they said that it was a DAILY balance and when I was charged the 4.00 the first time it brought my balance down to 96.00...so I was charged.... This took 3 times of this happening before someone finally explained it was daily balance and not monthly.....Could they just have explained that the first time???? Of course not, then they couldn't have gotten 12.00 out of me. Deceptive, deceptive, deceptive. I will be closing my account.

This bank is VERY bad. I was a TCF customer for a couple of years, my job relocated me, upon returning I reopened an account and have had that account for the past 10 years. Recently my wife was told they had started charging a service fee on checking accounts. I checked my account and they had taken 9.95 for the past three months.... I had not touched the money that was in that account since December (it's now June). So they had my money to do with as banks do and they are going to charge me for this? I had no reason to look at the statement that they claim the notice was on because I made no transactions. Therefore they took my money without notice. I would call that THEFT. If I changed my policy and took their money I would be prosecuted. They should have to either notify you by certified letter or recieve some sort of acknowledgement from you that you understand the policy change.
They have appearently changed management recently or something and it's for the worse, their shareholders need to realize that this activity will lose them customers.

Reasons why TCF is not the bank for you.

1. They limit your online password to 8 characters, which can be cracked in a matter of minutes.

2. They started charging me $10 a month to keep my checking account without informing me of the change. When I called, they said they sent a "flier" informing me of the change. Personally, I'd rather have a letter addressed specifically to me when something with my account agreement changes. They said that the only way they would wave the fees that I had incurred was by signing up for more services that they offer (singing up for direct deposit or maintaining a balance of $500).

I can agree personally with nearly all of the negative statements made towards TCF:

1 - Checking account was changed from "Totally Free Checking" to "Convenience Checking" without my consent or input.

2 - Notification of this change was made in my online statements a few months prior, but I've had no reason to look at my statements for years, for the following reasons:
a - everything I NEED to know is on my account summary when I log in
b - statements rarely reflect the current status of my account as I've usually made transactions after the statement has been issued
c - it's a hassle to click through to actually get your statement, the web site is slow, and it often times doesn't even work right
d - if there were something REALLY important going on with my account, one would think that they'd tell people in a separate mailing or perhaps a teller could inform me when I'm at one of their branch locations once or twice per month. Instead, they were quick to try to get me to "opt-in" to overdraft protection (don't do it! see #5), but no mention about the changes they made to my account.
e - I really wasn't expecting TCF to try to screw me over, so I didn't think it would be necessary to check my statements for it!@

3 - They will charge you $9.95 per month, if you don't meet the minimum balance requirement or if you don't have direct deposit. For those who say "it's only $10"...with the amount of crap I go through to save less than that on gas, food, utility bills, etc, I'll be damned if I'm going to let TCF essentially steal that from my account with little more than a weak excuse.

4 - If you call customer service in an attempt to get the fee reversed, they are rude & condescending, and will NOT reverse the fee if you don't meet the balance or direct deposit requirements. I talked to some supervisor who sounded like Sade, but she was certainly no "Smooth Operator".

5 - They will probably try really hard to get you to "opt in" and will tell you little more than that it's a 'good thing'. It looks like if you "opt in" you're giving them permission to charge you $35 every time you overdraw your account (rather than just deny the transaction). The new FDIC rules don't take place until August of 2010, so I recommend you opt OUT now, and watch your balance closely until then. Or just close your account with TCF and not have to worry about it :)

6 ?? Pending transactions DO take too long when compared with other banks. I??ve transferred money (in other words, CASH) from TCF Savings to TCF Checking, on-line, and the deposit still shows as pending until the next business day. I??ve also heard many stories that they stack withdrawals & deposits in their favor, in order to impose the overdraw fees. In other words, if you have a balance of $100, deposit $50, then withdraw $125 (in that order), they??ll process the withdrawal before the deposit so that you??re hit with the $35 fee. I??m extremely over-cautious about this now, so I can??t verify this personally (and I hope I never do!), but I wouldn??t put it past them.

I recently dealt with another bank, who took over one of my savings accounts and converted it to a money market account. They sent a SEPARATE notification in the mail, informing customers of the ownership and account change. I didn't notice that the new account had a minimum balance fee and I only had $1 in the account, so I didn't bother looking at the statements either. Same thing happened; they had charged me 2 months fees before I noticed the account balance was -$21. Called customer service, let them know what happened, they reversed the fees, sent me a check for my $1, closed the account, and that was it.

As you can see, TCF doesn't seem to give a rat's ass for their customers and will most likely lose a lot of business as a result.

While there is already legislation outlawing overdraft fees that is due to take effect this summer, TCF bank still actively draws upon this shady source of revenue - often charging $35 for a negative balance just one dollar (a sum which multiplies when another charge occurs, even if for another dollar) - and will not remove this practice (even upon request). Most banks already have given customers at least the option of removing such "overdraft protection" (misnomer really since the customers need to be protected from banks that continue such underhanded practices) in favor of their card being declined rather than accidentally spend a few dollars they don't have and get fined 10x for it. TCF however does not, being the shady provincial bank it is, and will keep using overdraft fees until the last day that it is legal to do so.

I have been a TCF customer off anf on for about 5 years and have numerous problems with them. I had to close a student account about 5 times before it could go through. The pending of transactions is absoluely ridiculous. Your income tax take 14 business days, your work direct deposit takes 2 business days, cash takes 2 business days are you serious! Their online banking is horrible and you have to pay a fee for it. They have also just changed their phone sytem what you used to be there only 1 good thing left, now if you even breathe over the speaker you get sent to a representative. And trust me you do not want to speak with them because the are the most rude and ignorant people I have ever spoke to. I have never had to deal with any unexplainable charges but know many who have this bank should be closed down due to their distasteful manner!

TCF bank is EVIL
they have stolen my 500 dollars without a trace from my checking account.
they impose fees without informing you. i have close my account with TCF.
TCF bank recently started charging customers for a monthly maintenance fee for previously free checking accounts. Guess what? They forgot to tell their customers. They charged me- a student $9.95 without any prior notification.
They mentioned that they had sent this info. in my statement-checked it out-nothing there. Then they said it was in my mailbox in my online account-nothing there either. Excuses, excuses....What kind of company makes policy changes and doesn't communitcate this to the customer
TCF is the worst bank ever. I don't know how they still have customers with all of the mistakes they make and none of which ever get corrected.

TCF bank is simply thief

995 is a tax on the poor! They are least likely to defend themselves! Good attack!

TCF needs your money. Expect undocumented fees, and brutal customer service. $2200 in an account, $50 in the other, and WHAM! a 9.95 charge!

Of course I was told, but I could find no info that I was.
A call to the vile condescending phone rep really drove my poverty home. Bloodsucking Parasites!

Some good news, though. The money coming into USBANK has really been rising. I told them all this so they can share TCFBANK news with all their customers and friends. They of course have no such charge, and listen sympathetically unlike the phone slime at TCF

TCF DOES manipiulate the order to what things post to checking accounts. I made a cash deposit at 1 pm on a wednesday and on thursday it was still pending to my account. I dont quite understand how a cash deposit at 1pm on a business day still pends more than 24 hrs later on a business day, yet a debit card transaction made after that deposit clears first before cash. A friend of mine who managed a bank said this was impossible. Someone has to be behind the scenes manipulating the order so they can earn overdraft money..any way to report these robbers??

In their promotional material, TCF says "Tell your friends about the confidence you have in us." So, I will.

On Sept. 28 I opened an account at the TCF branch in my local Jewel. I wanted a separate account for my business travel expenses and the location was convenient. Opened the account with a $1500 expense check I'd received from my local employer (drawn on a local bank). On October 7 (9 days after opening account: 7 business days) I do an electronic funds transfer for $1200to pay my Amex bill -- and TCF bounces it and charges me $35!

I got nothing but blank stares at my local branch and nobody had a reasonable explanation other than "sometimes it takes longer for new account deposits to clear". Well, that's not my opinion of how you treat a new customer -- and it's probably a preview of more surprises to come -- so I closed my account.

As they suggested, I will gladly "tell me friends" that they should never do business with TCF Bank!

this bank is full of crap. These bastards charged me for nonsufficient funds 3 times for 3 transactions that added up to $30. The terrible part is that I had $92 in my account when I made the 3 transactions so how in the hell I had nonsuffiecient funds when these bastards deducted the transactions from my balance!

To whom it may concern,

I have been a TCF customer for years. I have never been so dissatisfied with the lack of customer service. On Friday, April 10th, I was made aware that someone had hacked into my account. I would never have known if Visa fraud prevention services did not leave an automated message on my cell phone. I called Visa back and checked my TCF account online. My account had been drained and Visa said that a $1000.00 transaction needed my approval. That SHOULD have been a red flag for TCF. The attempted transaction amount was $1000.00 and yet IT STILL WENT THROUGH and drained my account. The second red flag for TCF was that the ??purchase? was the EXACT amount of money I had in my account to the penny. That is not even possible. And the ??radio shack? was located in Lithonia, Georgia. I live in Illinois. Also, the location listed by the transaction on my online account has mysteriously changed to COR0019. And it is no longer pending, it went through! I called TCF customer service on Friday! This transaction should never have gone through. Especially under such suspicious circumstances.
Furthermore, when I called TCF customer service on Friday, I had a very negative experience. The first representative I got a hold of hung up on me, and the second one spoke to me in a condescending manner, as if I was lying! Then he told me that TCF would try to get the money back in my account more than 10 days after receiving this letter. Later I talked to someone I know who works at TCF and he informed me that I will probably be waiting 3 months for the money to be returned to me if I even get it at all. This has to be a joke.
I am a college student. I have no money. Now I can??t pay my tuition loan monthly payment because TCF is blind and incompetent. Thanks.

I would appreciate it if someone with training could call me and inform me how TCF is going to fix this in a timely manner.

I've been a customer of TCF Bank for a couple of years now and have had a lot of overdraft fee issues. I thought they must have been my fault for miscalculating and not knowing how transactions post, but yesterday I found out that TCF Bank has been ripping me off the whole time.On Feb. 12 my account balance was $205.14. I made four purchases totaling $45.23 bringing my account balance to $159.91. The same night I checked my account balance online and noticed an ACH transaction pending for $200 after the purchases that I made earlier that day. So I recorded the ACH transaction in my register and brought down my balance to -$40.09. I subtracted a $35 NSF fee amount because that's what the bank charges for overdrafting the account. My final account balance was -$75.09. Yesterday, Feb. 15, 2009 I went to a TCF Bank and deposited $160.00 to my account to make it current and have a balance of $84.91. However, when I got the deposit receipt I noticed that it stated a -$20.09 balance. I was confused about what was going on. As soon as I got home I checked my account online and noticed that I had been charged $140.00 of NSF fees for the transactions that I had made on Feb. 12,2009 before the actual transaction of $200 that had made my account negative.I called TCF Bank and spoke to a man named Sebastian who told me that the reason why I had been charged the NSF fees for the other transactions even though I did have money in the account at the time was because TCF Bank posts the transactions from greatest to smallest, even though they weren't made in that order. He said the reason why the bank did this was because they want to pay off the more "SIGNIFICANT" amounts first like car payments, mortgage payments, etc., so it would be less inconvenient for the customer. But to me, this method IS inconvenient and they are not being fair or ethical. They charge the customer various NSF fees by manipulating the order the transactions post. I know Bank of America got in trouble for the same thing and TCF bank should suffer the same consequences as BOA.

I am totally done with TCF!! I recently made a purchase on line for my wife using my TCF debit card. The transaction went thru, however it never appeared on my bank statement. I called my branch in Chicago and was told that this transaction never took place. The branch manager called me back to let me know that there was a formatting error that occured when the transaction was made, thus no money was taken out at the time of the purchase.

Long story short, when the money was finaly taken out, it overdrew my account. They still charged me a overdraft fee eventhough it was their fault. Needless to say, I closed my account.

I deposited a $10,000 student loan check into my TCF saving s account. The teller placed a 10 day hold on the funds. 10 days passed and TCF still had a hold on the funds. I visited the local Homewood, Illinois branch on Halsted street 4 times and complained to a manager in hopes of getting the funds released. Days later I followed up with a telephone call. I discussed the issue with the Homewood branch manager again. The ignorant manager became very beligerant and rude. Cursed me out and hung up the phone on me. I contacted TCF Corp and explained about the long and unusual hold on my funds and that the Homewood branch manager had cursed me and hung up the phone. TCF Corp did finally release the funds after a 14 day hold on the account. The ignorant branch manager was terminated (found out she had multiple complaints). In conclusion - avoid TCF bank at all cost. Although action was taken by corp to correct my situation but this branch manager should not have been hired in the first place - and the long hold should not have been placed on my student loan. In summary TCF's customer service is very lousy. Their local bank managers are rude and appear to lack basic customer service and banking skills.

UPDATE: My situation was resolved at long last. I want to thank the Upper Management Staff at the bank for understanding my problem and not holding me responsible. At this point I am going to keep my account open and monitor everything very closely. I also have phone numbers for upper management level employees who have authorized me to call them first if I have any problems in the future. Now that's more like it!

Here's Corruption: I closed an account with TCF Bank back in December of 07 by means of a restitution payment. The account had already been closed. I came in as I said I would and paid off the remaining negative balance. 6 days after I did this (I have the receipt still), electronic transactions were allowed to go thru on that account (Netflix, Gym Membership) and AUTOMATICALLY reopen the account without my written signature anywhere. I have verified everywhere that this is done by a COMPUTER. I REPEAT: A COMPUTER! I also should note that I never once received a phone call from a REAL person to notify me that this was happening.

10 months after the charges were allowed to go thru WITHOUT my authorization, I had to again close my account, this time because of Fraud charges incurred from "free"creditreport.com. The bank immediately closed my account to, and I quote, "prevent electronic transactions" from incurring.

I am at this time being told that I am responsible for these charges. 10 months after they occurred without one phone call that didn't show up on caller ID as "Unknown Call". C'mon TCF, get with it! Call from a REAL phone! Have a REAL person call me. Now my credit has been damaged by this negligence.

So, I must question this: How come when I complained about Fraud charges, I was told that we must close the account and that I am the only one who can remove money from that account (my direct deposit was tied to the account and rent was coming up), but when I closed my account in December of 07, electronic transfers were allowed to go through!

Furthermore, why are electronic transactions allowed to AUTOMATICALLY open up one's account? How is that legal? That is the biggest issue here. As it stands today, I was PROMISED a call from the Regional Manager (the only one who can help me at this point), and have yet to receive it here at almost 10:00 p.m.

The bottom line: This business has an UNSATISFACTORY rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and ARE NOT an ACCREDITED BBB business. Don't let them do it to you. Close your accounts today, and make sure they are CLOSED.

on Monday I will be closing my accounts! I have been banking with TCF for about 10 years. I Have always had small problems with them. For a couple years now I feel like they have been stealing money out of my account. I will have a completely different balance in my checkbook then they have on my online banking. Maybe I could have made a error in my math once or twice but it keeps happening and the number is getting larger. There are no records of withdraws I haven't made the money just seems to be missing. Now what has started happening is I use my visa check card to make a purchase and then a month later it will clear... a month??? are you kidding me?!!! I have no idea if I am being charged twice or what TCF is up to. Then about a week go I wrote a check to my boyfriend who also banks at TCF. When he went to deposit it into HIS account they Deposited it in my account... how this is even possible I have NO IDEA! when I called to ask about it the teller told me to give it a couple days to see if it all works out. Now yesterday I deposited two paychecks. When I looked last night they were posted on my online banking but today they are magically gone. When I called about this they told me the teller made an error and the checks should be posted on Monday. I am done. I was banking here out of convince only. This place is horrible and should be shut down. If you cant hire employees who can do simple math then you don't deserve to be a business.

Many employees have gang tattoos and the managers seem to encourage a thug mentality. I closed my account after a meeting with my "personal banker" who reeked so badly of marijuana that I left the bank light headed.

I have never been so personally disappointed, disgusted or offended by any other institution in my existence. The fees are by far the worse and unfair business practices combined with condescending managers make this the worst possible choice for ANY self-respecting consumer. I have never heard one good word from ANY person regarding this barely legal company. They should be shut down immediately just for the offensive language they deem 'acceptable' for their employees to use. This is a true horror story of a rapist pretending to be a bank.

I decided to close my account with TCF today after realizing that they charged me over $800 on transactions worth less than $100 and constantly kept my account in an overdrawn situation. I first banked with them as a student at Michigan and they were the most accessible and open bank to students and my 2 year experience was pretty good. After I got a job in a state where they didn't have a presence, I still kept them as my primary a/c because I had good memories from them. However, that soon changed... my first run-in was when I lost my card and the help-desk lady insisted on using my Michigan address which was invalid and I eventually got the debit card 3 months after reporting it. I still kept the a/c though for sentimental reasons... The final straw though was this month when I had discovered that they had charged me over $600 on about 15 transactions that totalled less than $100. Granted, I was probably not the most diligent at checking my account as I had never ever run a debit balance on my account but what irked me was the customer rep. lady was rude, condescending and constantly cut me off when I was asking her whether it made sense to charge as they did. Also, the principle itself is just wrong - my regular automatic deposits into the account would have allowed for the account to correct itself but the charges kept offsetting it. Finally, Chase bank sends automatic alerts if your over the limit and you can react on time - TCF bank is least concerned... This is the first issue I've that I've felt so strongly about that I've taken the trouble to write it out but I'm done with them... Completely!
