Southern Dental Associates is unprofessional.

by H A.

Found someone better and cheaper! I discovered American Dental Care. For only $12 a month, I can choose from huge list of dentists and pay less than what Southern Dental Associates charges. Plus, I don't have to go through the "cattle car" type of operation that Southern Dental Associates runs. I get to see my dentist who I think is great AND I get to save money. Can't beat that!

Southern Dental Associates is TERRIBLE!

by Amber M.

I will NEVER return to any of the Southern Dental locations. My dealings with them were horrible. Waiting for 2 hours to get my teeth cleaned- ridiculous! My husband waited two hours in a chair to get his teeth cleaned, to then be told he'd have to wait another 30 minutes before someone could be with him. The dentist that worked on me- well, where to start. I waited in the chair for an hour for someone to work on my teeth. When the dentist did come in she shoved some numbing gel into my mouth, told me to use the saliva sucker when I needed it and then walked out, saying she'd return in a minute. When she did return, the numbing gel had already worn off (she was gone for over 20 minutes) and she preceeded to tell me that since I'd already waited so long, I could just reschedule my appointment. NOTHING had be done except waste my time!!!!! I told her to get it done and I told the novacaine shots without any numbing gel at that point. At that point, I'd been in the office for 2 hours. The dentist started texting during my exam and she talked about shopping with someone in the middle of my procedure. I have never been treated so badly by ANY dentist office. There is NO regard to patient time or even appointment times. By the way, I did have to return the next day to have the dentist fix fillings that she'd put in the day before; I was told she'd arrive at 11 am. I arrived at the office at 10:40 and she breezed in at 11:20 proving my point about no regard for patient time or appointments.

Dr. Scruggs was awesome! Good experience all around

by Marissa K.

I had a wonderful experience at Southern recently. I was seen by Dr. Scruggs at the office in Webster, TX. She was kind and so sweet, and she was also really great with my son...who has developed an early fear of the dentist. I feel like I received good treatment, and the Dr. did not try to "over-sell" or give me unnecessary treatment. If you go, ask for Dr. Scruggs if you can...especially if you have kids. FYI try to make your appointment for early in the day. You'll probably not have to wait as long!

Dr. Thomas is Outstanding

by Anthony V.

Nicest dentist I have ever had do fillings. She knew her stuff. Their office is very busy, but so are many health care professionals these days, which means you may have a wait. I had my exam/checkup, teeth cleaning and 3 fillings done in the same day. Really pleased with the service and dismayed by the negative reviews on here. They checked the spaces in my gums very well and no deep cleaning was needed contrary to what some of the reviews on here say. They only do tooth colored fillings... NO SILVER. FYI I went to the office in Webster, TX

Total cost after insurance for everything was $288 with Aetna DMO (3 fillings in upper rear, exam, cleaning). Prices vary for filling based on surfaces (per tooth) needing filling and tooth location (rear teeth being more).

As for people who need a deep cleaning, insurance usually doesnt cover that- I wouldn't blame any dentist for that.

Ripoff artists!

by David H.

I went to the Deerbrook Mall location for the first time in Feb. 2009 to get my teeth cleaned. I have an insurance plan that gives me 2 free cleanings per year. My appointment was for 1:00 PM. I waited in the waiting room for over an hour before they took x-rays. After the dentist evaluated my dental needs, he said that he would not clean my teeth unless I had 2 chipped teeth repaired and a deep cleaning. A financial consultant came to me and told me that the cost would be over $1,400. I told him that I did not want the work done so he escorted me to the front desk where the desk person asked me for $59 to pay for the exam. I told them that my insurance co-pay was only $5 and I would not pay them anything more. They called my insurance company and verified that I was right. They also told me that their estimate was wrong and they would call me with the correct pricing. It has been 3 days now and they haven't called. I must assume that they do not want to accept my insurance company's pay rate. All they want is for the insurance company to send them potential victims of their immoral practices. I have seen 2 dentists previous to this visit where they said that I did not need to have the chipped teeth repaired before they would clean my teeth.

Getting Expensive to go here

by Ash H.

I started as a patient in the Heights location when I was a teenager in 1992. As an adult I go for checkups and cleanings 2 times a year. X-rays and exams used to be free but now they cost $50. Also, the cleanings used to cost $73 in the early 00s but now around $90 is what you can expect to pay. Prices for extracting teeth are around $125 while filling teeth with cheaper tooth colored composite material is $150-200 whereas silver alloy fillings used to cost half that about 10 years ago.

The staff and dentists are very helpful and friendly but just be ready to pay. I once went in thinking I needed just a cleaning but left with a nearly $900 bill because I needed a few fillings to be redone and a wisdom tooth needed extraction.

I would suggest you make your appointment between 8 and 9 am to avoid the crowds and spend as little time as possible in the waiting room.

I got scammed

by Jennifer S.

I went into the Webster office for a cleaning and an evaluation. When I went into the X-ray room there was a sign posted $50 exam and x-rays, I thought great, but the web ad states free exam and x-ray. I was getting a bit skeptical. After an exam by the dentist, they had to send a finance guy in. This is alarming, I just need a cleaning wasn't sure when financing became a part of that. After the finance guy comes in he tells me I need several crowns and major work done and after my insurance it would be $6399.00. I told him I will not finance this I want to pay in cash and spread it out over a few months, he states well we really need to do it quickly, these problems won't fix themselves. After I continued to refuse their financing options he said that I alteast need to do the "deep cleaning" and it would be $479.00. I asked about the insurance he claims the insurance will cover $123 of it and I needed to pay the rest, I asked what about the insurance covering 2 cleanings a year, this is one of them, he said that they couldn't do that kind of cleaning on me that I needed another type of cleaning. After reluctantly agreeing I went into the cleaning room, there was no "deep cleaning" that went on, however I was told that I would have to come back in 2 more times that the cleanings take 3 visits. I asked why and she said that's the ADA rules and they have to follow them. I was irritated and ready to go home. After paying for the cleaning and going home I realized that they charged me $91 for the *free exam and x-ray, I got taken for a ride. People have to trust their dentist to be honest with them and provide and perform only the services necessary for each patient. I feel taken advantage of and will continue to let everyone know. If you go to Southern Dental be on guard, their main concern is no where near your mouth or the health of it.

Switch and Bait?

by Wanda C.

Made an appointment to get new dentures. Received a quote of $591.00 each for standard dentures and $715.00 each for premium. Ask if present denture could be patched for a crack until new ones arrived. Was told yes. Had to pay a $50.00 x-ray fee including a gum check for cancer or disease. After the x-ray, the tech said she would catch lab tech before they left to patch denture. The Doctor comes in and says there is no lab there, have to go across Houston. Now that I'm in the "doctors chair" I'm told that the standard denture is $640.00 each and the premium is $1500.00 each. I was told that I should not have listened to the person making my appointment !?!? No gum check either.
