My experience with Southern Dental off Highway 59 South near Sugarland is the worst ever in my entire life. My complaint is just too long to write here but the people there are scammers. Be forewarned that you could end up paying a whole lot more than what you were told during your initial visit. In my case, I ended up paying almost double the original amount. Also, there are other problems involved but I am writing this just to serve as a warning to prospective patients. It is interesting that many of the complaints here mirror my own experience with Southern Dental. It had been a nightmare dealing with this company. Go there at your own risk!

I can't believe these bad reviews, I think this location has turned over a new leaf because my experience was a good one. I went in for a general cleaning and to get my crown filled. I didn't have to wait that long, only 15 minutes, their scheduling must have not been overbooked. The dentist was a little short with me in conversation (I'm assuming time management) but he did a great job on my dental work. I had my teeth cleaned, and 1 crown filled - good as new and his assistant was just as gentle as he was. I will definitly be coming back to this location.

Do not go to Southern Dental on Bay Area mall loc.. They worked on my crown and bridge, and it's keep fallling off. I trusted them and end up wasting my money. The Dentis she needs to go back to school.
The manager he is a joke. I strongly not recommend

I had a 9:30 appointment at the Deerbrook location.
Timeline:
Arrived at appointment on time - 9:30
X-ray - 10:10
Seen by doctor - 11:10
Seen by hygentist - 11:50
Unless you have absolutely NOTHING else to do, I would not recommend this location to anyone. I wish that I had read the reviews before making the appointment. I will not make that mistake again!

I agree with Jennifer S. I was scammed at the Webster location also. I went in for a check up and cleaning and came out with a $1650 dental bill and a painful tooth for over a month. Initially, I needed a build-up and crown, then on the 2nd visit the build-up ended up needing a root canal because the incomplete build-up was still painful. I think Dr. Thomas drilled to deep doing the build-up which is why I now need a root canal. After the 3rd visit, when Dr. Thomas attempted to do the root canal, she was unable to numb my mouth so, again I left without having anything done. Before, leaving the office I asked Dr. Thomas why she was unable to numb my mouth and her reply was, "I don't know." I asked her if it was possible that there was an infection and her reply was, "No." Before leaving the office I asked her if she could prescribed some antibiotics just in case there was an infection, which she did do. At that point I knew I didn't want her to work on my mouth anymore. I made an appt. with the Endo Group on Westheimer and to see if I really needed a root canal, and I let them do the root canal. I do not want to go back to SDA but they're telling me I'm still responsible for the $870 crown they had made for me, which I think is unfair. This dental group is a real ripoff with incompetent people working at the Webster location. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND SOUTHERN DENTAL TO MY WORST ENEMY!!

I have alot to say about all these negative comments,I used to work at a dental office in Texas city, all these people on here have no clue what they are talking about! You should know what kind of insurance you have and what they cover, before you get it! There are ADA rules that dental offices have to follow,or guess what, your insurance will DENY,DENY,DENY,and you will be stuck with the bill. To respond to the one persons comments about "Cheap, good doctor, but looks very bad" HELLO maybe they do too many $10 tooth extractions, thats why they dont have the money to get anything new!! Call around and see how many dental offices take your insurance, not very many sweetie, you should be thankful Southern Dental does! And the other one person saying she got scammed, maybe the free xrays and exams were for people who do not have any insurance, did you ever think about that?? I'm sure the $91 charge was billed to your insurance company, not you! You should check into that,I'm sure I am right. Prices have went up EVERYWHERE since 2000!! You have to be ready to pay anywhere you go,not just Southern Dental! I have to pay for my groceries when I go to the grocery store, they don't care how hungry my kids are,if I dont have the money,I dont get the groceries! And they sure dont let me do payment plans on them!! So before you write negative comments on any medical or dental office, please know what you are talking about first before you post!!

I went to the Stafford location (new) and my first impression was awful. Pieces of wallpaper that fell off were stapled and taped to the wall and it just generally looked awful! But they had a schedule mishap and someone didn't put me on the list so I wasted my time and I went back 2 days later because my insurance company wouldn't let me switch, and We spent 3 hours waiting to do a 5 minute tooth pulling but the doctors were very nice and everything was very clean so just for that I would go back again AND the whole thing was only $10!

I went to the wirt road office for 3 years. twice they left me sitting in the waiting room while they went to lunch.

Once, when the X-ray machine was inoperative, they wanted to do a root canal on 3 teeth, because they did not know which of the 3 was the temperature sensitive one.

While talking to the office manager, she gave me the price for the surgery, at $400 per tooth, but each time she added it up, she was charging $500 per tooth. I kept pointing out her math error, and she kept making the same mistake.

I solved the problem without surgery by switching toothpaste to sensodyne pronamel

update: moved my business to the 19th street office.

I asked that my dental records be sent to the 19th street office, and made an appointment there...for 8:30 a.m.
The office there fills up quickly; be sure to make your appointment for as early as you can.

I explained the problems I had at Wirt Rd. to the office staff and dentist at 19th street, . The dentist there discussed my worksheet with the hygienist. I told them I was only there for a simple cleaning, and wasn't going to pay for anything more.

I got my teeth cleaned thoroughly, in what I considered to be a professional way...no charge. the w. 19th street office of southern dental is going to keep my business.

Unbelievable! Showed up on time for a scheduled appointment at the Humble office and waited two and a half hours! The staff asked many in the waiting room to reschedule after they had waited even longer. All of this was occuring while about 4 or 5 southern dental employees lounged and talked as if on permenant break time in plain veiw of all customers. I'm looking for another dentist ASAP!

I took my mother to the Deerbrook location because thats where her insurance told her where to go. She wanted to take out all her front teeth and to get her upper part denture. After they took her x-ray and saw the dentist and than when the persons that does the insurance said to my mom that her insurance does not cover what she is getting. Oh they did not know that I am a medical billing person that went to school for this and worked in doctors office. I got home called her i nsurance and told them what they told us.They look it up and found out that they do cover only a thousand dollars. I called them back at southern dental in deerbrook and wanted to speak with the person that take care of the insurance department and told them what i found out and they called my mother insurance i gave them the name of the person i spoke with at my mother insurance and her number. They did took off the thousand dollars off. Plus the person that does the insurance I really don't think he knows what he is doing. All they do back there is talk and looks like they don't know what they are doing. I think they need a new office manganer that knows how to run the office because i see that they all get bad reviews not just the one but all of them.

Aweful! I had a previously scheduled appointment for a check-up and cleaning for 8:30 am, and didn't even see anyone until 9:45. They had to do my x-rays twice!! How considerate of my radiation intake! The woman looking at my mouth spent the entire time talking to someone else in the office about basketball. I finally got her attention and mentioned that I had concerns about my gums. She told me not to worry. Then the insurance biller came in and told me I had a gum disease, but couldn't explain it to me. She just handed me a huge bill, and couldn't explain what my insurance would cover, what things would cost, anything. I asked to speak with a DENTIST about the disease, but she said no one was available. I asked to go ahead with the cleaning (after two hours of my life were wasted) and she said a hygenist had other appointments, but I could reschedule. I told them that I would have my new dentist contact them for the records. Fortunately, my insurance is going to let me change providers. I really wish I could have the two hours I took off of work and out of my life back too!!

Started going to 249 Locaton WilloBrook Last year was told It would cost ten thousand dollars to fix all my teeth i went there only because I had one tooth to be pulled. Every since then my teeth have had to be removed and i told them i couldn't afford that because Im disabled and I was then told you will have to get dentures and Im only 34. I went home and was just amazed I was told that. Nelson the person who handles the billing has no clue. They aren't there to help they are there just for money. went in to get front tooth fixed and had started to get a crown and this is 900.00 with Ins. I have started and paid 310.00 and I have pain now and will now loose my front tooth still And again i am disabled and it's hard for me to come up with that kind of money and Nelson knew this. You wait forever cause they book to many people. The front girls are hateful and care less about you. it's all about the money not the care. So now I am looking for somewhere else to go.

I have little good to say about Southern Dental Associates. They botched a lot of my dental work, and now I am forced to return to them so they can fix it. (Their work is guaranteed for a year.) My insurance will not pay for another dentist to fix their shoddy work (of course not! They've already paid SDA!).

When someone has managed to make a mistake on every bit of dental work they've done in your mouth, you are hesitant to return to have it fixed, even if it will be free!

The office staff is not very friendly at the Fry Rd. (Katy) location. They don't seem to communicate well either.

We have waited three hours for an appointment before, and when we asked how much longer, they said it would at least be another hour. We ended up rescheduling.

Another man in the waiting room had waited 4 hours, and as a new patient, they hadn't even given him new patient paper work. He ended up walking out. This is a story I have heard often in the waiting room.

The dental assistant put on my temporary crown backwards, so it fell off when I got home. I had to return for him to put it back on, and he used permanent glue, which made an easy removal much more difficult (it now required numbing and drilling to remove!). The next time I returned, I found out he was fired because he had made many mistakes.

I have had pain that has never been dealt with, and I woke up one morning, brushed my teeth, and a piece of porcelain fell off my crown (which was only 2 weeks old). It is visible when I smile.

I am not happy with any of the work they have done. Don't risk using this dentist.

By far the WORST experience in dentistry and orthodontia I have EVER experienced. I have five kids who have all had some sort of dental work or orthodontia and have worked with wonderful dentists for 16 years. The first time I came into the Southern Dental Office in Webster, I was there five hours with my two boys for cleanings. Made an appointment to get my son's tooth extracted - waited 2 hours and then when they looked at the chart, there were no x-rays with it and they weren't sure which tooth to do...their orthodontist who recommended the extraction was gone and they couldn't reach her. So after all that wait, we had to go home. We went home and I took him out of school the next day to wait another hour so they could pull out the right tooth. Later went to get a filling and had to wait at least another hour until they could do it. -that filling has since popped out and it hasn't even been a year yet. The review about the financial guy is right...I have never been aproached like I was being pressured by a salesman in a dental office until now-we have always paid our dental bills and are happy to take care of small problems before they become big. Two of my children had to have palet expanders - I took my other child who also needed the same thing to a different dentist (Magness Orthodontics - great, great place and they know how to file a claim with insurance) we found whose office staff knows how to file and be friendly and not jump on your wallet nor herd you like cattle. Her ortho work went without complication, we paid our copays, insurance paid theirs and all is well. At Southern Dental almost a year later we are still dealing with the same issue - we have paid our portion, but they didn't even file a claim with our insurance until I found out that was why we kept getting bills for the insurance portion - only because I told them to file the claim did they do it 10 months AFTER his ortho was STARTED - then the claim was denied because they didn't send the right code that was supposedly preapproved. They have now sent our account to a collection agency FOR THE INSURANCE PORTION. We went in last week just for a check-up and found out they had made our appointment at an office we have never even been to nearly 45 minutes away - I am sure they will charge us for missing that appointment. They charged me $25 for each x-ray I had them duplicate so I could take it to another dentist. I have never had a dental office be so innept. Their actual dentists and orthodontists are nice, but not good enough to overcome the terrible office staff who don't know how to do their jobs. I would never recommend this place to even my worst enemy...stay away...

Found someone better and cheaper! I discovered American Dental Care. For only $12 a month, I can choose from huge list of dentists and pay less than what Southern Dental Associates charges. Plus, I don't have to go through the "cattle car" type of operation that Southern Dental Associates runs. I get to see my dentist who I think is great AND I get to save money. Can't beat that!

I will NEVER return to any of the Southern Dental locations. My dealings with them were horrible. Waiting for 2 hours to get my teeth cleaned- ridiculous! My husband waited two hours in a chair to get his teeth cleaned, to then be told he'd have to wait another 30 minutes before someone could be with him. The dentist that worked on me- well, where to start. I waited in the chair for an hour for someone to work on my teeth. When the dentist did come in she shoved some numbing gel into my mouth, told me to use the saliva sucker when I needed it and then walked out, saying she'd return in a minute. When she did return, the numbing gel had already worn off (she was gone for over 20 minutes) and she preceeded to tell me that since I'd already waited so long, I could just reschedule my appointment. NOTHING had be done except waste my time!!!!! I told her to get it done and I told the novacaine shots without any numbing gel at that point. At that point, I'd been in the office for 2 hours. The dentist started texting during my exam and she talked about shopping with someone in the middle of my procedure. I have never been treated so badly by ANY dentist office. There is NO regard to patient time or even appointment times. By the way, I did have to return the next day to have the dentist fix fillings that she'd put in the day before; I was told she'd arrive at 11 am. I arrived at the office at 10:40 and she breezed in at 11:20 proving my point about no regard for patient time or appointments.

I had a wonderful experience at Southern recently. I was seen by Dr. Scruggs at the office in Webster, TX. She was kind and so sweet, and she was also really great with my son...who has developed an early fear of the dentist. I feel like I received good treatment, and the Dr. did not try to "over-sell" or give me unnecessary treatment. If you go, ask for Dr. Scruggs if you can...especially if you have kids. FYI try to make your appointment for early in the day. You'll probably not have to wait as long!

Nicest dentist I have ever had do fillings. She knew her stuff. Their office is very busy, but so are many health care professionals these days, which means you may have a wait. I had my exam/checkup, teeth cleaning and 3 fillings done in the same day. Really pleased with the service and dismayed by the negative reviews on here. They checked the spaces in my gums very well and no deep cleaning was needed contrary to what some of the reviews on here say. They only do tooth colored fillings... NO SILVER. FYI I went to the office in Webster, TX

Total cost after insurance for everything was $288 with Aetna DMO (3 fillings in upper rear, exam, cleaning). Prices vary for filling based on surfaces (per tooth) needing filling and tooth location (rear teeth being more).

As for people who need a deep cleaning, insurance usually doesnt cover that- I wouldn't blame any dentist for that.

I went to the Deerbrook Mall location for the first time in Feb. 2009 to get my teeth cleaned. I have an insurance plan that gives me 2 free cleanings per year. My appointment was for 1:00 PM. I waited in the waiting room for over an hour before they took x-rays. After the dentist evaluated my dental needs, he said that he would not clean my teeth unless I had 2 chipped teeth repaired and a deep cleaning. A financial consultant came to me and told me that the cost would be over $1,400. I told him that I did not want the work done so he escorted me to the front desk where the desk person asked me for $59 to pay for the exam. I told them that my insurance co-pay was only $5 and I would not pay them anything more. They called my insurance company and verified that I was right. They also told me that their estimate was wrong and they would call me with the correct pricing. It has been 3 days now and they haven't called. I must assume that they do not want to accept my insurance company's pay rate. All they want is for the insurance company to send them potential victims of their immoral practices. I have seen 2 dentists previous to this visit where they said that I did not need to have the chipped teeth repaired before they would clean my teeth.

I started as a patient in the Heights location when I was a teenager in 1992. As an adult I go for checkups and cleanings 2 times a year. X-rays and exams used to be free but now they cost $50. Also, the cleanings used to cost $73 in the early 00s but now around $90 is what you can expect to pay. Prices for extracting teeth are around $125 while filling teeth with cheaper tooth colored composite material is $150-200 whereas silver alloy fillings used to cost half that about 10 years ago.

The staff and dentists are very helpful and friendly but just be ready to pay. I once went in thinking I needed just a cleaning but left with a nearly $900 bill because I needed a few fillings to be redone and a wisdom tooth needed extraction.

I would suggest you make your appointment between 8 and 9 am to avoid the crowds and spend as little time as possible in the waiting room.

I went into the Webster office for a cleaning and an evaluation. When I went into the X-ray room there was a sign posted $50 exam and x-rays, I thought great, but the web ad states free exam and x-ray. I was getting a bit skeptical. After an exam by the dentist, they had to send a finance guy in. This is alarming, I just need a cleaning wasn't sure when financing became a part of that. After the finance guy comes in he tells me I need several crowns and major work done and after my insurance it would be $6399.00. I told him I will not finance this I want to pay in cash and spread it out over a few months, he states well we really need to do it quickly, these problems won't fix themselves. After I continued to refuse their financing options he said that I alteast need to do the "deep cleaning" and it would be $479.00. I asked about the insurance he claims the insurance will cover $123 of it and I needed to pay the rest, I asked what about the insurance covering 2 cleanings a year, this is one of them, he said that they couldn't do that kind of cleaning on me that I needed another type of cleaning. After reluctantly agreeing I went into the cleaning room, there was no "deep cleaning" that went on, however I was told that I would have to come back in 2 more times that the cleanings take 3 visits. I asked why and she said that's the ADA rules and they have to follow them. I was irritated and ready to go home. After paying for the cleaning and going home I realized that they charged me $91 for the *free exam and x-ray, I got taken for a ride. People have to trust their dentist to be honest with them and provide and perform only the services necessary for each patient. I feel taken advantage of and will continue to let everyone know. If you go to Southern Dental be on guard, their main concern is no where near your mouth or the health of it.

this place is a far cry from the arrogant rich dentists; loved my dentist and my experience at katy; I would highly recommend.
I would not have been able to pay for my dental work if not for their low fees, thanks,

Made an appointment to get new dentures. Received a quote of $591.00 each for standard dentures and $715.00 each for premium. Ask if present denture could be patched for a crack until new ones arrived. Was told yes. Had to pay a $50.00 x-ray fee including a gum check for cancer or disease. After the x-ray, the tech said she would catch lab tech before they left to patch denture. The Doctor comes in and says there is no lab there, have to go across Houston. Now that I'm in the "doctors chair" I'm told that the standard denture is $640.00 each and the premium is $1500.00 each. I was told that I should not have listened to the person making my appointment !?!? No gum check either.
