Love At First Bite is a bakery with discriminating taste. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The woman behind the counter gives horrible customer service and selectively chooses who she will wait on. This is a business, not a high

I will not recommend this place to anyone I know. The service was awful. The woman at the front discriminated against my children and I. The woman at the counter told me that she was going to help a woman who came in after me because she owned a shop next door. When was it ok to not wait your turn. A shop that chooses who they will and won't help is Not a shop you should give business to.

I came here and had two cupcakes: the pumpkin and the hummingbird. The hummingbird is made of banana, coconut, and walnut (or other nuts) and was quite good, and so was the pumpkin. I was surprised to find the frosting wasn't overwhelmingly sweet (like it is at TeaCake Bakeshop) and the employees were very friendly and patient. My friend tried a bunch of the mini cupcakes and she enjoyed all of them.

If I come in next time, I think I'll try the cookies...the cowboy cookie looks good...

I've only had their ultimate chocolate cake. The cake itself was really good, but the frosting was way too rich-- buttercream, nothing but butter, sugar, and chocolate. I prefer my cakes covered with whipped cream.
Many people rave about this place, but I prefer to go to Virginia bakery a few blocks away or Neldam's in Oakland for my cakes.

I get why people in Berkeley and the Bay Area rave about "Love at First Bite"- it's conveniently located in Walnut Square, has a friendly ambiance, offers unique cupcakes like Matcha Green Tea, and is pretty much the only cupcake store of it's kind but these same people who rave of LAFB have obviously never been to somewhere more like Sprinkles in LA. My sister, my BF and I who all have had Sprinkles cupcakes (though I will admit that Sprinkles has way too much frosting) all said the same thing, their cupcakes are DRY! I like the cream cheese frosting on the red velvet cupcakes but the cake part, my favorite part, is so dry and just breaks apart. The cupcakes are comparable to the ones I can make myself at home and are definitely not worth $3. However, since this seems to be the only opinion for cupcakes in Berkeley, I guess it is OK.

Their website claims "Love At First Bite is committed to bringing Berkeley and the greater Bay Area quality baked goods, made the old-fashioned way?with care, from scratch and using the finest ingredients." but I don't think they live up to their claims. The cashier told me that the chocolate velvet cupcakes were baked fresh that day, but it was quite dry and tasted as if it was a day or two old. Of course when I asked if they were fresh I got a very rude response from the cashier and she treated me as if I had 3 heads.

I bought 3 different flavors and found that the cake to be very tasty albeit dry, but the frosting on the cakes were so sweet that I couldn't even eat it.

If the cakes weren't dry, I would have given them three stars instead of two.

Bottom line: At almost $3/cupcake, I would skip this place and go to Masse's around the corner instead.

Pros: cake tastes good

Cons: cakes are dry and frosting is too sweet

It's pretty much just cakes, cookies, and of course cupcakes. The cupcakes all have little names like "Red Hot Love" and "Ginger Babycakes". They're all really good, from-scratch cupcakes. They're kinda expensive, but I think well worth it. It's really a whimsical idea to go to a cupcakery but I like that Berkeley has places like this.

I bought 4 cupcakes of different flavors so my friends and I could each sample bites of each flavor (as dessert for dinner I was making). Clearly, not one of them had been baked fresh that day. They were different levels of stale, one was probably only a day old - texture not too bad, but the rest were bad, the worst one was truly inedibly stale (5 days old? I don't even know. I've never kept cake around long enough for it to get that stale). They were awful, and I was embarrassed to have served them as dessert. I wrote them an email about it, and never heard a word back. I will never go back.
