This is an amazing school. I have been studying here since 2006. From day one, you learn self defense techniques to protect yourself and/or get away from an attacker. I immediately started to gain confidence in myself and my abilities. Comfortable family environment. Upfront about cost, just call to arrange a free class. Great value for unlimited classes and flat monthly fee. NO CONTRACTS REQUIRED! You learn multiple martial arts at one school, so you get the best of everything. The instructors are not militaristic or shaming. They encourage you to keep going even when it is hard.

Pros: Age Appropriate Classes, Great Staff, Free trial Classes

Cons: None, I can think of

My son took karate lessons from Sensei Butch for at least three years. He learned a lot and especially enjoyed the sparring classes. Sensei Butch is good at what he does and it's obvious that he enjoys doing it.

I have 2 girls (5 & 13) who have been studying at Apex for a little over a year. My 13 year old dragged her feet at first, but once she started progressing her self-confidence level shot through the roof & now she would go to every class if I'd let her. She practices ON HER OWN (which is NOT like her at all!) & has even become more responsible with her schoolwork, keeping track of assignments on her own & maintaining her grades (which is part of the dojo's "bushido".) She's made friends at the dojo, too -- the kids there are great & help each other, & any attitude problems are NOT tolerated by Sensei McLaughlin or Sensei Terri. My little one hasn't developed quite the same enthusiasm yet, but she's very proud of herself every time she earns a promotion. And -- extra important to me since I have daughters -- there is a LOT of emphasis on practical self defense & how to deal with strangers (how to recognize their tricks as well as how to physically defend against an attempted attack.) There are grappling & sparring classes as well as traditional, so it isn't all theory & choreographed moves but also actually applying the lessons in real-life situations. I can't say enough to recommend this school.

Pros: The teachers are great & there are always higher level students helping lower levels.

Cons: The costs can add up, between sparring gear, tuition, etc. but it's still worth it.

My whole family loves this dojo. We relocated from LA in 2000 and looked for a new place for my kids for 4 years before being recommended to Master McLaughlin and his school. Before it was just my kids, but the staff and other students made us all feel so comfortable, both my wife and I signed up immediately. This school is light years ahead of even our dojo back in Carson California (sorry Master Eric). Our children had to start all over but said we wll believe it was well worth it. The material is taught at their age levels (4, 7, and 11) in their individual classes. I have also seen Master McLaughlin perform some awesome corporate seminars that really pumped up the people at our corporate office.
I was never really interested in starting karate because of my bad back and previous knee surgery (too much running) but Master McLaughlin showed me how the Isshin ryu system limits strain on the body, while being one of the most effective fighting styles around. Now I am back in shape and even my wife loves it. They have a fitness class that appealled to her and then she signed up for regular classes. All the other schools we went to wanted long term contracts and we weren't sure of whether we were going to be moving or not. When we left LA we abandoned a 2 yeear contact and lost almost $5000. Master McLaughlin and Miss Renee told me that their Philosophy is that Apex doesn't do contracts, because he wants his students to be there because they want to not because they feel they have to. That is a sign of a business that has complete trust in its services.
I was also very impressed by the moral character. Master McLaughlin uses Christianity as the base of his philosphy but doesn't force religion down your thoat, In California its just the opposite, they force buddhism and atheism on you and no one bats an I. I am thrilled with someone that doesn't bow to popular opinion there is a great mix of cultures in this school, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, but they all train.

I am a naturally curious person. I always seek for a bigger picture for what I do. Universal Martial Art satisfy very much my need. Here is a non-exhausive list of materials I have learned from UMA : 1) Traditional Karate (includes technique, Kata, weapon, background and history); 2) Street self-defense (situational, unarmed and armed); 3) Competitive fighting (stand-up, wrestle, throw and ground) 4) Conditioning (cardio and muscular) 5) Discipline and principle of martial artist 6) Chinese kungfu (hard and soft style) 7) Human anatomy (body mechanics and vital points), I can still go on and go and on ...

I cannot say enough about UMAAC! FOr over 4 years, UMAAC has been a second home to myself and my three kids! We have made Martial Arts (Karate) a part of our lives and I have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people here! I am offered not only a richly diverse student population to train with and teach but also a uniquely universal philosophy of teaching. Blending 10 different arts into one, it forms a Self defense system that draws on the best of many worlds and is not only intriguing but very practical. UMAAC has a wonderful way of developing the best from our students and helps create a world class citizen that is well rounded, disciplined and confident. We offer opportunities that transcend many single discipline Martial Arts studios because Our Sensei is so well versed in many disciplines and is backed by over 20 years of experience. I cannot think of a better place to raise my kids nor affiliate myself with as UMAAC has enriched and benefited my life ten fold physically and mentally since I began. If you are looking for a positive influence in your family's lives, an opportunity to practice traditional MArtial Arts or just get into shape, then please check out UMAAC! I think you will like what you find and you will certainly find welcome in our house!

Pros: Positive Atmosphere and encouragement to improve your own performance, and overall concern for every student and their family

Cons: If you have never been there, it may be difficult to spot from W.W.T. HArris at first

This place has it all, but most important for me and my kids is that the family atmosphere, sure the sensei is great but you can find a lot of good instructors. There's something more to this place. Everyone treats you like family and supports you. I trained for many years, a long time ago, and I felt as comfortable here as in my own home. Lots of other places I visited we too busy trying to sell you on why they were better than every other place, that I felt like they didn't care about me. I am 47 years old and I feel like I'm 27 again.

Pros: Great Facility, super location near the northlake mall and university city, great instructors and well organized

Cons: takes a long time to reach black belt

I looked for weeks for a place to take my kids for karate or some other activity to keep them busy. I never expected to find someplace that would have such a positive impact. They are taught respect, and discipline as well as how to protect themselves. The staff here are so awesome, the teachers and desk people really know how to make you feel comfortable and keep you informed. The head instructor teaches all of the classes and there's almost always at least 1 instuctor for every 5 children. These guys are so great I signed up for the fitness program. I haven't lost much weight yet, but I've gotten stronger and more confident. Best of all my friends told me too watch out for contracts that they use to lure you in... No way.. not here... they don't do them.. but if they did I wouldn't have a problem signing one now...
Don't waste time anywhere else.
