My wife and I visited this restaurant for the first time this weekend.
it was a saturday, we were pleasantly greeted at the front door by one the most hospitable young ladies i"ve ever encountered
she proceeded to ask me if it was our first time in the restaurant, at first I thought it to be strange and then she informed that the reason she was asking is so that her manager could stop by and say hello. (WOW) now that really made my wife and kids feel really special.
By now were at the table and our server approaches, i believe her name was Meriam, my Lord what a great personality, we wanted to take her home when she was done.so now our food arrives i take a couple of bites, my wife takes a bite and simutaneously we look at each other with a look of satisfaction.
About middle way the meal the African American gentle approaches the table and kneels down to our little son and says welcome young man what is your name. they have a breif conversation and he introduces himself "Good evening folks my name is walter I am the manger on duty, and i would like to welcome you all to Mi Familia, they tell me its your first visit and I would like to Thank you for choosing our place to spend your evening. by this time my wife and I are really feeling special, there is still a place where hospitality is important.
this was by far the best dining experience we have ever had.
we plan to make this our date night place at least twice a week.
this is truly a quality operation.

This place came recommended from an antique shop down the street and it was instead an incredible disappointment. Wonder if they're owned by the same person. I knew it was going to be a bad experience when a bald gentleman at the front said gruffly "come on, let's go" to seat us. It wasn't like it was busy. There were about three tables occupied for lunch. So we sat down and I opened my napkin to find big globs of dried beans and cheese on my knife. Got another napkin, and the waiter asked me with a sharp tone, "um, is that one bad?"...what kind of a question is that, of course it was!. All of this was forgivable until this same waiter brought us our food and didn't check on us once until it was time to pay (too little, too late by that point). Adding to the charm of the place were flat soft drinks, food tastes like a reheated TV dinner, and get this...the fajitas don't come with guacamole and sour cream. It was $2.49 extra for that! We won't be going back, ever. My cost for this "enjoyable" lunch was fifteen dollars (!!), which I could have paid six bucks for at Rosa's and it would have been much better. And unless my experience was unique, I don't think place won't be around long. My advice to you is that you drive the short distance to 114 and find somewhere else.

Horrible food and service. Restaurant was about 30% full. We ordered for four people, including a pitcher of domestic draft which was $7- but of course rang up $9. The food was super salty and lacking any flavor- and meat was poor quality and dried out. One member of our group ordered an item that was prepared using the wrong sauce. On the second round the kitchen put the correct sauce but the wrong meat. On the third attempt- since everyone at our table was done eating- the waitress offered a sopapilla in place of the meal. When we asked to speak with a manager- we waited 15 minutes before a cook showed up explaining there was no manager. EVERY OTHER RESTAURANT ON THE STREET IS AWESOME EXCEPT THIS ONE- AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!

Casual atmosphere. Good solid Mexican food. Can be busy at times but get a Vida Loca and the time will fly. Just don't get two.

This restaurant has a good atmosphere and the food is good as well. They recently remodeled and renamed. They can get busy during lunch hour, but the wait isn't too long. They also have a bar and the drinks are not bad.

A very good place to grab a very good meal. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is really nice. I've had the enchiladas and fajitas. The margaritas are the best though!

I was in Dallas visiting a good friend and we wanted to eat some good mexican food. This place is really cozy. I order the carne asada steak dinner. It was delicious. The staff was friendly. I would recommend.

I really enjoyed my dining experience at Don Mateo's! The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was hot and absolutley delicious. I have never had better enchiladas anywhere, and I would recommend their queso con carne on anything! I don't live near Roanoke, but the drive is definately worth it just to savor their cheese sauce. A definate must try!!
