the charm of the old diner car is looking a little ratty these days, the food was way too greasy to be edible and the service.. well, leah, our waitress was aggressively hostile when we were one of four couples in the entire joint.

We've been coming to Relish for about 13 years and have never been disappointed. The menu is on the small side, but the preparations are always perfect! In the warmer weather, the outdoor garden is perfect for a relaxing dinner. But maybe I shouldn't be saying all these good things about it. I don't want to have to wait to be seated the next time I go there for dinner.

Pros: Great food, nicely prepared

Cons: Buba is no longer there

Going to this place is just settling. The menu is tiny and mediocre. By the time I picked something off the menu that moderately interested me, my waiter never showed up. He just never took my order, brought me water, acknowledged my existence. I sat there for fifteen minutes, got up, and left. Maybe if they hired someone who wasn't 11 years old to work there, the service wouldn't be so awful.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I had to write a review because I was really surprised by what I read from other users. I love this place and come all the time and always have great friendly service. I love their burgers and the specialty drinks are on par with any upscale bar in NYC.

Pros: service, cocktails, food

Cons: crazy busy brunches with long waits

How good the food is does not make up for the horrible service. It's almost like everybody is drunk or cocained that works in front. I used to be able to deal with it. Maybe I have changed. Sorry Relish, you lost me.

I come here for the food, not the service...the staff varies so much here that I don't let it affect my decision to eat at Relish. The first time I went, the waiter was awesome...fun and friendly. We gave him a ridiculously huge tip. We had such a good time that we decided to have our wedding rehearsal brunch there about two weeks later and our waitress was hellishly bad...she had an attitude with my adorable 82-year-old father-in-law, who is sweet as pie so she immediately lost in my book. There were 15 of us, which is a lot of work, but if you can't handle waitressing, do us all a favor and do something else for a living. Great fries and cheese grits, so I'll probably go back as soon as possible. What can I say, I'm a masochist with a food problem. Oh, and don't go b/w 5-6PM - the kitchen is closed. I hate that.

The food at relish is good and has been consistent every time I've eaten there. It's also a great space, especially the back yard for brunch when the weather is warm. Unfortunately, the service there is pretty lame. It's hard to get the servers' attention when you need something and often times when it's busy, you will end up waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

This place has become my favorite Brunch spot in williamsburg. They have some really amazing dishes that I have never had anywhere else, especially the Corned Beef Hash in Roasted Red Peppers sauce. Amazing. The spanish eggs, french toast, chicken sausage gravy, and even their milkshakes are incredible. Additionally, I ALWAYS order their grits, and love them (and I was born and raised in North Carolina) and they are good 95% of the time. Even the burgers look amazing with the gigantic side of onion rings, but ive never brought myself to trying one for brunch.

The staff here is great even when they are slammed on the weekend, I have only had one occasion when they told us they had lost our order, and gave us free drinks. The cocktails are a little on the pricey side, as is the dinner, but overall worth it for the portions you get. It is usually pretty crowded on the weekend, so you have to get there early, but they have a whole lot of seating room, especially in the summertime when the patio is open.

I have become a regular at this place because I live in the neighborhood after union picnic told us 40 times that "we arent open yet" well after their posted opening time. My girlfriend and I go here at least once every two weeks, if not every weekend. In fact, I ate there this morning, and loved it. I just wish they delivered so I could order that biscuits and gravy when I'm hungover Sunday morning.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Relish. I am a regular here, dining almost once a week . The service is always fantastic, as is the food. I bring tons of ppl to eat here, and so far no one's been let down. It's hard to want to go anywhere else with such a remarkable place like this. The folks here really value customer service, and it shows. For a place that is constantly packed, it means a lot to me as a customer to have my drinks refilled on time, and to be waited on so fantastically. The crowd is usually very standard run of the mill Williamsburg hipsters, as you would expect for a place in their location, but the vibe of the place is very warm and welcoming to all. I always here my new favorite songs being played here, which just adds to the general cute ambience of the little shiny diner near the waterfront.

Their dishes are a variety of exceptionally delicious southern-tinged fare (try their biscuits and grits), along with some extremely creative takes on standard diner dishes, such as their Corned beef hash with poached eggs and roasted red pepper sauce, & their Goat Cheese and Fig Cake. Brunch is the best in Williamsburg, and definately challenges some of my favorite east village haunts. Dinner is amazing, don't miss out on trying their superb mac and cheese, their super yummy, creamy, thick milkshakes, and the gently fried, not too greasy huge onion rings! Really everything is great, and with the level of attention to customer service, why put up with being treated any less?

Relish, I love you! XOXO

Pros: fantastic friendly wait staff, cute warm ambience, yummy food (their BRUNCH rules!)

Cons: cocktails a bit pricey, but very tasty.

I'm not too familiar with the Williamsburg area, but we ventured out to this restaurant about 2 weeks ago with a couple of friends and thoroughly enjoyed it. As soon as we approached the block, we saw about 2 dozen motorcylcles and thought that we were signing ourselves up for some kind of raunchy adventure in a old school, diner. However, we were quite delighted once we arrived, found our party, and checked out the menu in this somewhat trendy and totally inviting haunt.

While the entrees looked delish, I settled upon the Pesto Marinated Grilled Chicken. Good choice because it ended up being the best grilled chicken salad that I have had in years. I've despised chicken for quite a while now, but this salad reminded me that chicken, and its rightful accompaniments, could actually be tasty and satisfying. Wow, were the grilled portabellas and the balsamic vinagrette perfect!

We did run into a miss in the entrees because our friend who ordered the Hanger Steak mentioned that it was quite tough and difficult to "saw" (yes saw - not cut ) through. Uh oh... Aside from that, our party indicated that the veggie burger and the grilled sirloin burger both were orderable but not memorable (a.k.a. "fantastic").

I honestly cannot speak for the rest of the entrees, but I CAN speak for the great time that we had at the restaurant and the fact that...were it more convenient to our house, we'd make it there more often.

Cons: All the way in Williamsburg

I have an extensive group of friends that tends to grow exponentially if a few of us sit down at the table at a restaurant to eat. Call us disorganized, but don't make it into a big awkward problem if you're a waiter and you can't accomodate us. When two more friends showed up to join our table last weekend at Relish, our waiter snarkily gave us only one chair, as if to say that we should have to choose between who got to stay and eat with us. When the food came (on time, to their credit) the resentment I felt towards those who had brought it to me rendered all that I tried tasteless.

Relish could be so awesome--its location and look offer so much potential, and it is kinda a neighborhood institution. every six months or so i try it again, hoping for a good time, and i leave wondering how this joint stays in biz... the food is banal and inconsistent and i don't think anyone ther ehas acutally ever crossed the Mason-Dixon line (that is not what grits taste like). the REAL ISSUE WITH RELISH IS THE ATROTIOUS SERVICE. honestly, there is a big dude bartender who is pretty solid, but every single waitress in the place is mentally handicapped and super snotty. Sorry girls, i don't care how skinny you are, it doesn't make you cute, hip or entitled to that 'tude. Walk 3 blocks to grand and go eat at aurora.

The food was excellent. Service was acceptable. And atmosphere was casual chic. We had the monk fish which was amazing. And the champagne sangria was quiet unique. Would go back again.

All the items on the menu (which changes every season) are excellent. The service is generally good, though some waiters can be aloof, and at times the music can be downright out there...but the excellent food makes up for it.

What could have been a wonderful meal (the food was overall delicious and well prepared) was completely ruined by the loud, extremely heavy metal "music" blaring from the stereo. We asked the waitress very nicely to please change the playlist to something more appropriate for dinner, she chuckled to herself and said "sure" but never changed it. We asked her again when she came to our table and she said "sorry, that is what we play here." There were hardly any other customers there. So, we left her a tip to match her snotty attitude. Then she loudly told the chef what we left her as if she expected to get tipped simply because she exists. Great food, but get it to go! And stay away from Dee Dee the Wannabe Waitress.

After seeing this chic diner in the film version of Angels in America, I hunted it down on my bicycle, using the Williamsburg Bridge for triangulation. That night, my girlfriend and I enjoyed an amazing meal, complete with prompt seating and friendly service. Unfortunately, return trips to Relish have been far less satisfactory than the first.

This is odd. The Macaroni and Many Cheeses has always been crispy on top and creamy inside, the Mixed Greens crisp and flavorful with a light vinaigrette, and the specials intriguing. In short, most menu items are tasty and adventurous, while staying true to their warped diner roots.

But my last three visits have been marred by both my high expectations and their rude service. My recommendation is: go once on a hot evening, sit in the garden, enjoy the cocktails, order several items, take pictures, and never go back.

I visited Relish for Sunday brunch this weekend. I was pretty happy with my omlette, and my date's prociutto and poached egg "benedict" was delicious...I had to steal more than a few bites! However, service was on the slow side (my glass of water was never refilled) and I would have been happier with the food if it had been hot when it was brought to the table, instead of just above room temperature.

Those complaints aside, I really enjoyed my meal, and I'll definitely be back. Maybe I'll stop in for dinner next time.

With all the great places to eat in Williamsburg don't waste your time on this overrated tin can. The food was average, the decor is cool but the service was overly pretentious!!! They need to round up all the wannabes that work there, attach a big truck to this trailer and hall these credit card hipsters out of the neighboorhood!

I've had drinks here a few times, but tonight I finally tried the food. We loved the crispy basil shrimp rolls and the mahi tuna was nearly perfect. On the other hand, the parmesan french toast was smothered in an unidentifiable brown sause, that completely diluted the sharp flavor of the cheese; and the hangar steak special was more like my grandmother's mush pot roast and the accompanying salad was way too salty.
Do try Fire Walk With Me cocktail, it perks you right up, but one is enough, unless you're looking for a hole in your stomach. Lovely space and great service.

The staff here were super attentive but not in your face. We went for dinner on a Saturday and were seated in the garden immediately. The food was awesome, we got burgers, onion rings, beers (and they load your plate up with salad if you're trying to not be a lard-ass). Good vibe, I'd definitely go back there.

This place is fabulous.

1. Best garden in Williamsburg, hands down.
2. Excellent food -- I've only had one or two mediocre things there, and I've tried at least half of the menu. Try the fried oyster appetizer or the feta bread pudding with the obligatory burger.
3. Cool but not too cool -- it's only two blocks off Bedford, but the crowd is much more laid back. I haven't seen a single fauxhawk there.
4. Open late. Most of the Williamsburg restaurants close around 11.

And despite what several other reviewers said, I have always had good luck with the waitstaff. The outdoor waiters especially are exceptionally nice and professional.

Sure, the onion rings are, in fact, big and greasy, but what do want from a deep-fried vegetable? Relish, like a lot of restaurants in NYC, is pretty much hit and miss; however, the hits are generally homeruns. The sirloin burger, simply put, is out of this world, if not one of the top five burgers in the city. I have been on a rather extensive search for the Big Apple's finest burger, and, it seems to me, that burger is lurking near the East River in Williamsburg. Really, I don't know how you could try this burger and not feel your toes curl. I wouldn't recommend anything else, though. While not bad, most of the other dishes simply leave me wishing I'd ordered the burger.

Both the decor and the food at Relish leave you with a warm glow, or perhaps the warm glow can be attributed to the Sidecar, a delicious cocktail no one outside of Relish seems to have heard of or be able to prepare. I regularly take the trip all the way from the upper, upper west side to eat here. The appetizers are innovative, the entres comforting and the desserts sinful. The service last time was both hip and helpful, encouraging us to be more adventurous in our pork choices, while comforting us, that it would all work out. The outdoor cafe and garden are a pleasure and will only get better as we head into summer. The reviewer who complained about the waitress asking for a tip should just make sure to leave one if he/she knows his mother's Belgian tipping habits.

i loved the place, the music and the setting were great, young, hip, cool without being pretentious or too trendy - it just needed more people! we were there prime time (9-10 pm) on a saturday night and it was only half full. cool lighting and decor, great music, nice waitress and hostess, friendly bartender, good food - but where was everybody? maybe the place has peaked but i hope it was just an off night becuase i want to go back.

Relish used to be my favorite restuarant in Williamsburg but it seems that everytime I go there something dissappoints me. Sometimes the dish I want is no longer on the menu, sometimes it's the service. Despite that, their burger (I like it medium-rare with cheddar and bacon) is still one of the best in NYC. The bacon slices are huge and crispy and the soft, flavorful meat never falls apart or soaks through the bun. Their Billy-Cheese steak sandwich is very good, too, but last I was there it wasn't on the menu, at least not for dinner anyway.

I am greatly disappointed in how "Relish" has fallen in both food creativity and quality and also service. Their menu now has the flair and taste of TGIFriday's and their waitstaff is rude, unattentive and careless with losing orders. When they first opened they were a welcome touch to the neighborhood but now I would not recommend them to anyone unless they just wanted to look at the decor.

Pros: beautiful diner car

Cons: bad service, poor menu

This isn't your father's comfort food...and of course that's why it's become one of our favorite spots. Great staff! Fantastic food!! Fun atomostphere. It's almost like being in the womb again.

Every night is an adventure at Relish. Visually there's always an exciting space to chose to eat in suiting any mood, whether its the renovated dining car, the modern softlit back room, or the relaxing and spacious, wonderful outdoor eating courtyard. The food always offers new possibilities, from a cheap burger that's my favorite in the city to many moderately priced modern American cuisine combinations, many of which are among the most exciting anywhere. The chef's cooking is outstanding, and his experimentation with foods and presentation are really amazing. The food is absolutely top notch and moderately priced! And finally, the service is beyond friendly. The waitstaff are professional and beautiful, representing the best of Williamsburg. Check this place out. You will go back many times without exhausting its possibilities!

Pros: the chef, the visual experience, the waitresses

Cons: cant get enough, lowfat choices

While the atmosphere and service was up to billburg standard, the food was burnt and greasy. Probably good for a severe hangover but otherwise verging on inedible, especially for the price.

VERY disappointed with this place. This place has a great atmosphere and even the menu looked promising. Almost everything our table ordered was simply lacking. We tried most of the menu items and the only dish that was passable was the skate. The chef wouldn't allow substitutions and the waitress couldn't offer suggestions because she was a vegetarian (when do we get fed up with this). Gloppy mac and cheese, oversauced ribs and tough ribs, greesey onion rings, on a watery salad, improperly done flank steak, too-dry jerk chicken, etc. Not too mention it wqas way overpriced. The desserts pleased my companions, but I thought they lacked innovation. In a town with so many choices, I would suggest chosing another...

Pros: Cool Atmoshphere, Up and coming hood

Cons: Poor Service, Overrated Food

Relish is consistantly an excellent place to find a hardy meal with an unexpected twist. The Menu changes seasonally and usually offers some intresting dishes like crawfish cakes.

Great upscale diner fare in sleek stylish setting. I was in town visiting friends and they suggested this palce. Upon entrance, the hipness factor seemed a little daunting, but people were generally cool. Had some nice cocktails at the bar before settling in for a great meal. I highly recommend the seared tuna salad -- scrumptious.
