I would not recommend using this car rental agency. You are much better off going with a large reputable named company. It's worth the extra money.

The customer service was just terrrible, and worse, it was at the direction of the manager himself. My boyfriend and I spent over $700 in renting an exotic car . We got stuck in traffic on the way to return the car and explained that to the staff. No one told me at any point that we would be charged for those extra hours that were beyond our control. It turned out that we were a little over 2 hours late. The manager said they have a 1 hour grace period, but since I was over it, we were being charged a full 3 hours (they apparently round up!). He was nasty, unprofessional, and could not articulate where it stated in the contract that extra fees would apply. Most rental agencies are lenient when it comes to returning a car, especially when it's in the evening and no one was waiting for the car.

To top it off, they gave us a car which had the inspection/registration expired and an EZ pass that didn't work. Save yourself the aggravation of dealing with ignorant staff!

I booked a 15 passenger van online and when I went to pickup the van they informed me the van was involved in a front end accident. Not a good start I thought, the staff explained they had called both numbers and left messages regarding the situation. I checked my voice mail and indeed they did call at 8 in the morning 4 hours before my pickup time, and my wife also left me a voice mail stating they had also left a message on our answering machine at home. I guess that what happens when you have unreliable T-mobile service, but thats another review. Being that I had 8 kids waiting for me to pick them up for my sons birthday party at six flags I was a little unsure of what would happen next. The manager there spoke with me and offered some solutions, he even took me to the car lot and showed me the damaged van to confirm what they were stating was true. Luckily my brother was with me and the manager offered me two minivans or two seven seater SUV'' to accommodate my passengers. I looked at the pricing and it was going to be an extra $110, before I even stated that to the manager he said he would make the total charges come out to what the 15 passenger van total would have been. I was very impressed at how management handled a tough situation and in the end made me and the kids happy. Customer service like this is what I appreciate, and management here did not drop the ball. Satisfied customer.

I have been renting with Action for the past 3 years. Sometimes I use the service on 33rd street, sometimes I use the service at their downtown Broadway location. No matter where I go the people are always professional and nice. I established a relationship with one of the managers who helped me out when I got into an accident with a yellow cab in one of there rentals. Now I just ask for him when I reserve a vehicle, when I go to pick up the rental the paperwork and vehicle are waiting for me, i sign and drive. Top notch customer service

Used there service for a week. The car I received had low mileage and worked perfect for my needs. It was a big help that the rear seats folded down because I needed the room for my fishing rods. The people that work for them were friendly and helpful. I would choose there company again for future rentals.

My wife and I picked up a Mini from them for a weekend. The ladies behind the counter were extremely friendly, and gave us some recommendations to visit for outlet shopping, as we are from the UK. The car was great and their staff were very friendly. 5 star service!

Be certain to check the gas level when the car is pick-up, as once i did not and then, ran out of gas after driving less than 70 miles, on a turnpike, in upper New York, stranded for nearly 1 hour at night waiting for a tow truck to find the location. The next time i rented a car (lack of options) it had less than 1/4 tank of gas. It was more painful to complain to management (they're incompetent) then to suck it up.

After reading the horrible reviews on citysearch I almost canceled my reservation with them, I'm glad I didn't. I went ahead with my reservation. I was a bit anal about everything so I called the office and spoke to one of their representatives about policies and hidden fees that they might charge me once I get there. The only charge that was added to my account was a mandatory drivers license check fee for "first time renters", to make sure my license was in good standing. I made sure to ask if this is stated online, and I confirmed it was under the policies section. So my total price for the midsize car I reserved came to $55.85 with all taxes and fees, and a mandatory hold of $300 as a deposit on my credit card. When I went to pick up my car I was charged exactly what the lady told me they would charge me. After about 10 minutes my paperwork was processed and my vehicle was outside waiting for me. Based on other post here I thought I would get a beat up dented older vehicle. To my surprise I got a really nice ford focus with less than 6000 miles on it. The car drove great and was drama- free for my day trip to Pennsylvania. When I returned my car the next morning, the young lady gave me a final receipt with my final charge total, and a voided receipt for $300 deposit. This rental company gave me very good service and I would recommend them, I will continue to use Action, CHEAP RATES, good service.

Horrible experience. I rented a car for Thanksgiving weekend. Picked the car up Wednesday morning, 11/26/09. It was a Ford Focus with 39700 miles on it. (There was a sticker on the windshield saying "next service due: 33000 miles or 9/29/09." Obviously, both of those things had passed. Great.) Got to my destination fine. On Friday, the car wouldn't start up -- dead battery. I thought maybe I had left a light on or something so I had to call AAA and have them jump the battery, then drove it around for an hour or two and made sure I had turned everything off. Saturday morning when I wanted to leave, the battery was dead again. AAA jumped it and I left for New York. Several hours later I stopped to refuel the car in Connecticut. The engine was off for maybe 5 minutes, then wouldn't start up: dead battery again. Got another jump from AAA, and also called the Action office, where I left a message with a woman who said there was no manager there now but that one would call me back on Monday. No one called me on Monday. I called them Tuesday-- a different woman took down my info, said a manager would call me tomorrow. No one called Wednesday. I called back Thursday. The woman said that her "fleet manager" was "on the road" and that I couldn't talk to him: only she could. She put me on hold for 5 minutes, then came back and said that the fleet manager had checked out the car and said there was nothing at all wrong with it. I asked to speak to a manager: she said the fleet manager was "on the road" and that there was no office manager in the office and that I should "maybe call back later." (This was the middle of the day on a weekday.) I got angry and yelled at her about how it was THEIR responsibility to call ME back. She agreed to have a manager call me. I never heard from them again. Unbelievable.

rented a VW, a SAFE and GREAT car, according to their website. I inspected it in their dark and stinky garage, finding the driver door repaired, sounding hollow and cardboardy when shut.
Once I got home and was actually under some streetlamps, I discovered that the front airbag-column was hanging lose and the airbag was missing. AHA! the repaired door tells a story , that of it being smashed so hard that the airbag exploded and wasnt replaced!!!
Same with the plastic on the inside of the door, lose. The window made a whiney noise going down ...as if to say "enough already".

I am seriously thinking of suing them for reckless endangerment and false statements ...remember 'GREAT, SAFE CAR"
Oh yes, look at their fineprint in the contract. Its worth it, alone for the 100,000 "Thank you"s after sentences like "you break a tire, you pay for it, we are not responsible"

I rather BIKE to Vermont next time.

I found this car rental service through Kayak. I called up and booked for a 24 hour rental, from Saturday 2pm to Sunday 2pm, weekend before Thanksgiving. The cost, as I recall, was about $75. The first thing that strikes you is that you have to pay most of the amount upfront (about $62). This was different from all the other regular car rental services I've dealt with (Budgets, Enterprises, etc). I figured I would put it on my credit card and hope that I could fight it if it turned out to be a sham. Right after I charged it, I checked out some reviews. My heart sank when I read some of the reviews. What made it worse was that most of the reviews appeared to be very bad, but with a number of very positive reviews that gave it 5 stars, all published on the same day! I decided I would try my luck, and simply dispute the charge if something egregious happened and just get a car through Zipcar.

I was the only customer when I went to rent the car. It still took me about 20 minutes. The reason was that they wanted to check if my credit card offered any kind of insurance. I'm not sure what would have happened if I didn't have such a card.

I believe I had asked for an Intermediate size car. The car I got was a Ford Focus, which was smaller than what I had expected. It had almost 50K miles on it, and was pretty badly dinged. I made sure every nick was noted. The inside had not been cleaned well. They noted the car as having a half-full tank, even though it was a little less. A minor nit but irritating.

The car drove like a small car that hadn't been very well taken care off, and with high mileage - it got me around but made enough noises to make me a little worried.

The return was uneventful, although it took about 15 minutes, even though all I needed was a receipt.

So all in all, a considerably worse experience than a regular car rental. However, the one (and only) saving grace - it appeared to be about 30% cheaper than comparable rentals that I could find at other companies. Also, many other rental companies close at noon on Saturdays and either don't open on Sundays or only open in the evenings. So you might end up having to pay for two days with other companies.

I've rented from this place a couple of times because I'm cheap and have tried to save a little bit of money, but NEVER again!! The customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. They are rude, unhelpful, unknowledgeable and there is never a manager available to speak to. There is also no higher authority to send complaints. What company does not allow you to speak to a manager for complaints??

Be warned first of all that if you reserve your car online, even if you receive a confirmation email -- Action car rental is just joking. Apparently you are supposed to receive a call to get your credit card information but if they don't contact you, you're out of luck... like I was when I showed up and there were no cars.

Out of desperation I rented a car again this weekend. The car was old, dirty, banged up and completely unsafe. The interior light was broken as well as the light in the shift gear console. Worst of all there was no window wiper fluid!! So dangerous! Oh and the check oil light was on from the moment I rented it. This place is a disgrace. Spend the extra money and rent from a reputable rental company.

1. Even with an Amex Platinum card, they will force you to take their Action Car Rental insurance program

2. When picking up the vehicle, they will look for every single slight nick and/or scratch (which is hard to protest when you return you car after hours and cannot be physically present the following day)

3. The car has to be returned "three quarters" full... now granted I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but can someone people tell me how exactly you fill up a tank three-quarters of the way? So... if you're "challenged" like I am you wind up putting in too much and giving them a full tank

On top of this, they are rude beyond belief behind the desk. I honestly have never seen anything like this in the City and I frankly rent cars for work every other week

So I had requested a benz slk 500 for a very special day for me. I reserved the car on friday, for a sunday 2pm- monday 2pm usage from their hempstead location.

I got a call on sunday 1pm saying that the place closes at 3pm so try to be there abt 20 mins before.....no problem, since im about 10 min drive away.

I got to the area 2pm and spent the next 15 mins looking for the place.....i called up their customer service which was of no help at all and finally ended up discovering that they rent out of a gas station!
Anyhow, i go inside and the attendant states that hes got the key but hes got nothing to do with action car rental and i would have to wait for the guy who has to do the paperwork and hes about 45 mins away.

I tried to call the customer service for some explanation or to see if they could expedite the process, and they kept telling me that im calling their manhattan office and i need to be calling their long island office. Even though i was dialing the long island number which was being redirected to their manhattan facility i guess since it was a sunday. Now im not a expert in running a car rental operation, but shouldnt your employees know how the business operates; that on sundays they need to be aware of the ongoings of the other locations.

Anyways, the only person who was someone helpful was Noela and after talking with her for a while, the guy who was suppose to do the paperwork showed up, totally ticked off because he wasnt made aware that someone was going to be picking up a car on that day.
Even he stated how horrible the company is and how they treat their customers.

Anyhow, after all this business, i decided to walk out of that place without giving them my business.

As you can see, i wrote quiet a bit, simply because I really wanted to express how badly i was treated by this company.
Forget about getting any service from them in the future, i would sincerely hope that they experience the worse type of punishment which is to lose the business of other customers who realize what a sham of an operation they have there.

Anyhow, i go inside and the attendant states that hes got the key but hes got nothing to do with action car rental and i would have to wait for the guy who has to do the paperwork and hes about 45 mins away.

I tried to call the customer service for some explanation or to see if they could expedite the process, and they kept telling me that im calling their manhattan office and i need to be calling their long island office. Even though i was dialing the long island number which was being redirected to their manhattan facility i guess since it was a sunday. Now im not a expert in running a car rental operation, but shouldnt your employees know how the business operates; that on sundays they need to be aware of the ongoings of the other locations.

Anyways, the only person who was someone helpful was Noela and after talking with her for a while, the guy who was suppose to do the paperwork showed up, totally ticked off because he wasnt made aware that someone was going to be picking up a car on that day.
Even he stated how horrible the company is and how they treat their customers.

Anyhow, after all this business, i decided to walk out of that place without giving them my business.

As you can see, i wrote quiet a bit, simply because I really wanted to express how badly i was treated by this company.
Forget about getting any service from them in the future, i would sincerely hope that they experience the worse type of punishment which is to lose the business of other customers who realize what a sham of an operation they have there.

After reserving at a rate from Car Rental Express at a rate for twoday weekend, caliing and talking to a Rep and leaving a deposit I arrived to pick up the car and told that the rate was a mistake. No one had called me even though they claimed to, stuck in a time crunch on a Friday evening far from any other agency. They charged me twice as much, did not even offer a smaller car at a lower rate and stuck by "some called you, there is a note here". I verified the rates and had all paperwork with that quote sent to me 2 weeks before renting and their response.." Well that person doesn't work here anymore". Never again! Unless you are renting one of their expenseive luxury cars you are treated like dirt

I was told that I had not made a deposit so the van was unavailable. I was told that they had tried to reach me by phone and email (I did not receive and email nor did I receive any phone messages despite leaving 3 contact numbers). So on the day that I was to pick up a 15 passenger van to take a bunch of kids and adults to camp. No van. The woman (Chareen) was not the least bit helpful, but very quick to point out that it was all my fault. I am very angry and all I can do is write a review and hope that intelligent and kind people will heed it and rent from another agency.

I was very happy with action. I rented a 15 passenger van and a minivan for my yearly outing to Lake George with my whole family. The vans were clean and we had no problems on our 5 hour trip. I forgot her name but the counter agent was very helpful by printing out mapquest to our hotel. Good business.

I rented a BMW convertible for my 21st birthday, and it was awesome! The car looked like new, and made me look like a million bucks. The service agents were friendly and I even received some type of birthday discount I didn't know about. I'll be back to rent their BMW 650. Highly recommended!

Wish I would have read the reviews prior to renting. Horrible customer service. The Downtown office is about 50 square feet and the two women are so loud, my husband has to leave the office. Convertible top did not work after leaving the office. Typical additional hidden fees to raise the rate of the rental. Avoid renting from here.

The car I reserved was not available when I came to pick it up. They gave me a car which didnt fit all 5 adults!
They tried to scam money in everyway possible! They make up new rules and regulations when you go to pick up the car and when you return it.
My car had no arm rests, burn wholes all over the backseat and given to me at half a tank.
I told them I was going to be late returning the car at least 5 hours late, they were ok with it! the deal was $15 an hour after the time it was due back. They were totally aware that I was returning it late. THEN the next day after I returned it they wanted to charge me a full extra day claiming that they told me only 4 hours was ok! What!
Then there is a 200 mile limit a day which they will NEVER tell you! I said this was not told to me and I would have never taken a car from you guys if that was stated! They then were nice and said ok make it 500! I thought that was awesome! BUT no no no! They are claiming it was 500 for the whole weekend not per day!!!!
If you rent from this place they will be rude to you, change every detail they tell you, try to scam extra money and your car will be a wreck!
I rent a car at least once a month here in manhattan, I am telling you this is the WORST place in the city.

This is a terrible car rental service. I reserved a Corvette for this past weekend, but when I got there, they had rented it out to someone else, and claimed there was no record of my reservation. They gave me a Boxster instead, but I had to wait over half an hour for them to "clean" it, even though it was still dirty when they brought it out, and the radio/CD player did not work. Additionally, I was told I could go over the 200 miles/day limit by about 50 miles, but I was charged for the additional miles anyway, which I am currently disputing with my credit card company. Also, the person who helped me was on a personal call the entire time and was too lazy to do her actual job. This place has great cars, but trust me, the service is terrible. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM.
