It is with mixed emotions that I write this review. Hence the reason I waited a year. Upon researching the midwifery center and their philosophy about natural birth I was immediately in love. There was no where else that I wanted to deliver my baby. Through out my pregnancy I had good and bad experiences with them. My appointments never felt rushed which I loved but at times certain midwives were rather sarcastic and condescending about things which was a bit of a turn off. When I was about 30 weeks I recall one of them telling me that the pre-natal vitamins I was taking were not the best and "going through me,right into the toilet". That would have been nice to let me know earlier than 30 weeks! I also had a bit of frustration discussing the hospitals policies on circumcision which is too long of a story to tell here. But in a nutshell everyone had a different answer to my questions and no one would permit me to speak with a doctor directly. My biggest issue was that I met with 3 different midwives in the weeks leading up to my delivery and even expressed to one of them that I felt like my son's head was under my right breast and I was accused of being "uptight" and I was told he was in perfect position. That is of course until I arrived at the hospital 5 cm dialated and well into active labor. Then it was discovered that he was franks breech (coming out butt first). Which of course meant I needed an emergency C-section. I understand that at times it may be difficult to determine a babies position but the fact that I brought it to their attention , I was blown off and it was missed by three of them was a little upsetting. Looking back I should have trusted my instincts and requested an ultrasound...but I trusted their expertise.

I loved that I didn't feel rushed in my appointments, I had the option of water birth, and the rooms were so warm and inviting. However I never got the warm and fuzzy from any of the midwives. As I said with a couple of them there was quite a bit of sarcasm that made me pretty uncomfortable. This was very surprising to me because I had read very positive reviews about them online.

I am hesitant to say I wouldn't recommend them for sure because plenty of women have great experiences there and they are the only birthing center of this kind in the area. But because of my experience I wouldn't even consider going back. I would just suggest you be in tuned to whether you feel comfortable with them or not early on and if you feel something is wrong go with your instincts and request a second opinion if your not taken seriously.

**I did however have a very positive experience with the labor and delivery staff at Depaul after my c-section.**

I love Depaul. If you are going natural, they are the place. It appauls me that one person had a bad view there and it's a bad hospital. It's not! I had troubles with my thrid child and they took care of me and wheeled me over to the other side. My son was born healthy through it all and the midwives were there the entire way! Thank you for the midwifery center!!!

Almost a Year ago now Blair Conger delivered my baby and almost cost me my life. I had a large blood clot that she swore she had removed. My mother had asked her if she was sure that I had delivered all of the placenta, She did not even check. I did not. The morning following my birth I had to receive two units of blood, with no explanation of why I needed it. I was released still bleeding heavily not even examined by a midwife or doctor. Ten days later I had to have emergency surgery and receive 4 more units of blood to save my life. I spent 3 weeks I the hospital time I should have been enjoying my little girl.

I spoke with the midwifes and hospital and they apologized. That would have been the end of it if I had not just found out two days ago that another lady gave birth in that hospital with the same midwife and had nearly the same problems, just a month ago. Where is the supervisors? I live over three hours away how do I meet someone mother-in-law with the same midwife, same hospital, same problems in less than a year some things are just too serious to be taken so lightly.

I have three children, my last one I had at De Paul. Although I thought the attitude of some of my midwives might have been a bit pushy, it was the best experience I had. Overall, the hospital has very nice staff. Unlike the local general hospitals, the nurses seem to actually care about how you feel and do everything they can to help you feel better. I wasn't given an irritated tone when I went in for a false alarm. I was met with concern and consideration.

The Midwifery Center at DePaul is a warm, welcoming home-like environment situated within a hospital. We have delivered 3 children there, and as a doula, I have worked with several other families there. I would highly recommend this option for birthing women. It is a place you can feel respected, nurtured, and supported. It is family friendly and comfortable. I only wish there were more places like it!
