First, I get a call about a half hour before my appointment (took the day off from work to meet them) that the technictian's daycare couldn't keep their kid. So they re-schedule for the next day, which mean more time off. Then the guy shows up 25 minutes past the scheduled time. I had agreed to spend about $325 to upgrade my system, but then he informs me that I need to spent another $89 plus tax for a wireless device. Now understand this, we've been with them for 14 years, but this is the first time we hear that their system is not compatible with FIOS!

The tech actually told me I could go back to an analog phone system and he wouldn't charge me the $89. We've been on FIOS for 5 years now when our entire neighborhood was converted over. I understand they will say in the fine print of the biling statement, that we need to advise them of a change, of which the tech actually smarted off and said such. In other words we've paid for an alarm system for approximately five years that wasn't actually monitored. THEY should be testing the system occasionally--it's way you pay for; monitoring! This is a true case where you get what you pay for--cheap is cheap! Run away, run very fast away.

I don't get the negative reviews here, it sounds like colution to me.
I have been a customer for 3 1/2 years now and the service has been not shy of perfect.
People not getting a call back, most likely have not set their alarms correctly. I get the calls every time, mine gets triggered.
They have serviced my alarm a few times, always on time, courteous employees and super fair price.
Every time I call them, I don't wait long and they take care of my issue.
Most of these complainers, are probably starting off in a not so polite way and when they get what they dish out, they cry foul.
You catch more bee's with honey, than with vinegar.
My friend, also has this company monitoring his house and has had no complaints. Maybe it is, because we are educated and well mannered individuals when calling for service.

I have had Smith Thompson for 2 years now. I searched for them to look up their phone number because I needed to update my call information with them. That's when I saw these perplexing reviews so I had to share my experience.

When I originally called their sales department, I waited for a few minutes on hold and when the sales person came on, he was able to give me actual prices over the phone without needing to send someone to give a sales pitch. I got the low down on the phone, and made an appointment. Easy breezy.

Their tech came out and reprogrammed my system and added their wireless transmitter. The whole process took about an hour and it was online.

I just don't understand these reviews. It's either the best experience ever, or the worst of their life. For me it's been great so I suspect unreasonable people or competitors posting.

I did my due diligence to research alarm companies before I called any and the fact that they don't force you to sign a contract shows me they are confident enough that they will keep you with good service without one. I am here to tell you it's true. They have never raised my rate, they have never failed to respond to my alarm system, and have never been rude to me. If that happens, I have the ability to cancel them (but I'm not worried by now).

I had my worst experience with these guys...and it felt like the usual Moms and Pops company...with a very small team and not a lot maturity with the owner or their team. Not sure how they react when we are in emergency...but with their short temper and rude and everything...i don't want to go near them..BEWARE..you were warned!!

We had Broadview before Smith Thompson and we switched to Smith Thompson because, It was local, Good reviews and A+ Business rated by the BBB, Fast call back time (Under 30-45 Seconds once alarm sounds), Very affordable price!

I highly recommend them! The sales guy was very polite.
Smith Thompson actually saved us from a burgalary me and my wife were out grocery shopping at night and we gotta a call from Smith Thompson saying our Glass Breaker Went off and that Police are on the scene now.

We got there and our window was indeed smashed open !!!! I was outraged but nothing was stolen the Alarm report showed siren went off at 9:14 PM and our Home Phone showed Smith Thompson called at 9:15 and we gotta a call from them on our cell at 9:19 saying Police are on scene!

Since I don't trust (for the most part) anonymous 'review' sites, I did the Angies list thing and BBB and found them. Just had to wait about a week which was no big deal I guess, I was just trying to get hooked up before a vacation. But overall, very satisfied. Cell thing is neat. If there's a way a burglar can beat it, I'd like to know, don't see how though.

I just had ST installed my alarm , new keypads, uplink monitor and technician checked and tested all doors /windows . He even went out of his way to locate and fixed the sensor to my entry door which was yanked off by the door installer when I recently replaced my front door. Overall very happy with the service ... now I don't need my land line and my home is secured at a great price .. !

I scheduled installation of an alarm system with this company. The earliest they could install the system was 3 weeks later. I liked the price so I waited. When the technician arrived he informed me that there would be an additional $300 charge. He informed me that he "could not discount" the charge, but if I waited until 10:00am (on a Saturday) I could call the manager and they would delete the charge and he would come back and install the alarm that day. Turns out, this was untrue. No one was in the office that could "discount" the charge (keep in mind that there should have not been a charge at all. The alarm was not installed.

Avoid this bait and switch company!!!

Old alarm company wanted to charge me over 700 dollars to install alarmnet radio back up unit. Was able to get the uplink unit with S T for 89 bucks, and they were able to connect it to my existing alarm panel. Also had them add some additional equipment and their prices were extremely reasonable. I am very pleased. The tech that came out to connect my system was very knowledgeable and extremely customer oriented. I work in the alarm industry, for a competitor to S T, so I have a lot of knowledge about the industry. Lets just say I have been really impressed with Smith Thompson, especially in regards to their call back time on alarms. Ive had ADT and the company I work for monitor my house, and I have to say that their call back time beats both of my former alarm companies. Great Job Smith Thompson. Keep up the good job.

Smith Thompson took over my system that was previously monitored by ADT. I bought their Uplink transmitter for $89 to go wireless. Then I canceled my landline and I'm saving about $30 a month. Smith Thompson's rate is only $16.95 too. HALF OF ADT's rate lol! Everything has been great so far!

No were are not a real customer because we cancelled their service the same day the tech was there...READ ON. I was helping my fiance shop for an alarm system for her home when we stumbled accross Smith Thompson Security out of Plano. Looking back it feels like we stepped in ****! Normally it's not easy to get my gander up but this company really blind sided us. My fiance called Smith Thompson and bought their service for her home and scheduled a time for a technician to come out and activate the alarm system her builder already installed. I met the technician since my fiance had to work. He arrived on time but it was down hill from there. The technician found that the builder had replaced one window and one door before my fiance moved in and he said the door and window need magnets to get those parts of the system working. He proceeded to tell me that he would not do and to call the builder and get him to do it! I said, "I thought thats why my fiance called you!". He said your service does not come with any warranty and that we would have to get the alarm working on our own. Frustrated, i called their office to speak with a manager. They put me on the phone with Mark Thompson, the owner. I thought, "great, i'm sure he'll get this resolved." I explained my concerns and issues to Mark Thompson. Meanwhile my fiance gets home from work and is wondering why the security company is still there. It took the technician over 4 hours to activate the alarm system. Mark Thompson gets on the phone and demands to speak with my fiance instead of me. Blindsided she picks up the line and he immediately he starts cussing her out, "our service is cheaper than any other company out there and if you don't want it then God****** we'll just pull it out right now and you can bring it down to our office. This is bull****, he said. We don't need your business just tell the tech to pull the damn thing out and we'll find another customer."
She handed the phone to me crying and I told them to take it all out and leave. We contacted another alarm company; they came out same day and fixed the issues with the alarm and got us monitored.

Here is you 4 star rating that some many users were questioning the absence of :-) I am only responding here because I too am a small business owner and it wouldn't surprise me at all if these complaints were bogus. I suspect that Mark is right and all of these 1 star complains are false or greatly exagerated by a annoyed cusotmer (you can't please everyone cause the general public is cRaZy, if you have ever worked with a wide range of the general public, you know what I'm talking about). I have used Smith Thomson in Richardson, TX for 7 years now with now problems or complains. So has my father in law. I have also interacted with them 3 times in person at my house. Service works great, once for an upgrade. I have even spoke to Mark once before I think, and he was very professional. I was in the burglar alarm business for over 15 years in Ft. Worth and Smith Thompson is literally re-inventing the whole industry. I KNOW EXACTLY WHY these hateful nut cases are trying to trash Thompson personally, its simple, he is killy the competition with his wireless monitoring setup. When I (we) would go out on bids and the clients would mention they were taking quotes from a few different companies, including Smith T, I would just fold up my book and tell them, 'no sense trying to compete, cant touch em.' I just heard they are thinking about franchising in other areas and I guarantee you I will try their model. It's bullet proof. Trying to make Marc Thompson out to be the devil ain't working guys, he is just beating you at your own game. Trash someone else..

I had a run in with the owner on mothers day 2 years ago and he was the most unprofessional person I have dealt with. No alarm went off and they called the police out. After dealing with the police at the door early in the morning I called and asked what happened they stated the alarm went off. I stated to the rep I didn't hear anything please look into this more carefully and they found that it was there mistake. I stated that if I get fined for the police coming out on a false alarm I expect them to pay. She said you would not get anything and stated if your not happy you can speak to my boss. The owner called me back after I left a message and began to say if you don't like my service - leave. I have hundreds of people lined up needing service and that anywhere you go you'll pay more. I stated it was not a matter of price but service and stated your attitude is unprofessional. We continued to argue until I decided to cancel service.

He also stated that the cellular uplink was digital that he leased me when it was really analog.

If your looking for good service this is not the place to be. Look around carefully and you will find service just as affordable with someone who has customer service skills

I had a run in with the owner on mothers day 2 years ago and he was the most unprofessional person I have dealt with. No alarm went off and they called the police out. After dealing with the police at the door early in the morning I called and asked what happened they stated the alarm went off. I stated to the rep I didn't hear anything please look into this more carefully and they found that it was there mistake. I stated that if I get fined for the police coming out on a false alarm I expect them to pay. She said you would not get anything and stated if your not happy you can speak to my boss. I don't know what I was thinking when we signed up with a Utah company for alarm service. Smith Thompson is here in Plano. My test of any alarm company is how fast they call back after the alarm is sounded and I'm very satisfied with the response. I'm happy.

We monitor these review sites regularly for any misleading information and we strive to maintain a perfect customer service reputation and I felt it was particularly necessary to respond to this one. Please bear in mind we record all of our telephone conversations and I did in fact go back and review all conversations with this lady. It was in fact snowing that day and all of our techs wear shoe covers year round but she did want him 'tracking in wet snow' as she stated in her emails. This is understandable. We were unable to test a few openings as a result. It is also very important for people to understand that we DID NOT INSTALL her original system, we were only converting an existing system to our local Plano monitoring center. We have no problem repairing minor problems with systems that we didn't install and we normally dont even charge for it but if we have to go back, we do charge a small fee of usually $ 25 to $ 38 just to cover our labor. Our competitors charge usually over $ 100 just for the first 30 minutes! We feel this is fair especially since its not even our system to begin with. She also fails to mention that there were other issues with her system that we did not even charge to correct (low power supply, etc). You will notice in her review that we she demanded a refund of only $ 16.95. This would prove the fact that we didnt install or charge her for a faulty system. Otherwise, she would be demanding a full refund of a whole new system. Again, this was not even our system and was certainly not our fault. This is a completely unfair review and doesnt even remotely illustrate what actually happened. We also have recordings of a very beligerent person being extremely unkind to our operator staff and we did have to forcefully inform her to stop harrassing our staff. There was never any threat of legal action on either side. We are very sorry that this occurred but we feel we are being unfairly blamed for something that has nothing to do with us. Thank you.

Called the number, it went to voicemail (last thing I want calling security service). The guy called back and said I need to pay $38 or 40 for someone to come out and check it. I said they should have installed it correctly in the first place as it was not even 48 hrs from the time it was installed. He screamed "I don't care".It was surreal. Felt like he was on some controlled substace! I asked for supervisor and found out he was the owner!!!!
A clerk got on the phone and referred someone else who basically said the owner is my friend and employer and I cannot do much.So much for local small business. I kept calling and emailing for money back and no one responded for days.Once I threatened with legal action, copying all emails, the money was put back on credit card.Total nightnmare.I lost one month's fee and kicked them out of my house.I would pay $16 extra to have a professional company taking care of my security needs.

Just moved into a house that had an American Ranger alarm I guess put in by the builder. Collin got me hooked up in about two days. I felt bad since the first time their tech came out, I forgot to tell them that my phone line was not going to be working for another week so he couldn?t really do anything. I had to reschedule and their attitude was very nice about that since I basically wasted their time. What struck me though was that the technician (can?t remember his name) was nice enough to go ahead and activate the system on the first trip out so I could at least use it with just the siren only, that was nice. He didn?t even charge me either. Then after fighting with Time Warner about my phone line not working (that?s a whole other story!, Beware), I finally just had them install their Cell Link device which means the alarm doesn?t use the land line at all. Now that?s neat. I may just dump the phone line anyway since I found out its basically no different than any of these other ?internet? phone services that work only part of the time. Plus in my neighborhood, they steal hubcaps off of moving cars (its pretty rough) so I know all they will do is cut the phone line anyway. Cool people, great rates, and very helpful. And patient with problem customers like me.?

I checked with a consumer reporting agency and Brinks had over 300 complaints and had an A+ rating? Whats wrong with this picture? My technician was Jeremy and he was fantastic. I canceled my telephone line too and saved a bunch since the cops say phone line monitoring is basically worthless. Makes since. Delighted with Smith Thompson.

I'm must amazed that my last company couldnt remedy such a simple problem and they wanted to charge me a fortune just to come out. After contacting the B. Business Bureau when this was all said and done I realized that they had over a dozen negative complaints just within the past year alone! I called the dispatcher from my alarm company (Smith Thompson) and they had a tech call me back. After about 45 minutes on the phone with the poor guy (I think Gary was his name) turns out it was my carbon monoxide detector in the hallway. I feel bad because I was probably a little rude to all of them but it had nothing to do with my alarm and I certainly owed them an apology. Figure least I can do is tell the story. Nice folks, no problems with them and they were really helpful. Back to bed in about an hour.

I contacted Smith Thompson Security to activate and monitor my home security system. They sent out an installer named Chris who fumbled around my house and constantly called into the office to get help with the installation. After an hour, Chris changed the story from what the Sales person Tyson told me to a new story. I asked for an explanation and he referred me to Collin, a manager. After explaining the difference between Tyson's story and Collin's story, I asked for an explanation. Collin never provided me an explanation, but rather repeated their policy. After many requests for an explanation he stated he would not argue with me. What an insult. We were not argueing. I was simply asking him a question he did not want to answer. As a result he decided to be disrespectful and accuse me of being arguementative to avert the real issue, their company's multiple stories. After hanging up on Collin for acting like an abnoxious child, I asked the installer to leave my property. I imediatly called Mark Thompson to express my dissatisfaction with his company. It was immidiatly evident that Mark has had many dissatisfied customer's since he was defensive and rude from the start. Mark never took responsibility for his companies miscommunication and he proceeded to insult and chastise his customers and the people in the DFW area. After a couple of minutes on the phone with Mark, it was clear where his employees get their rude and lack of customer respect... it was from the owner, Mark, the man who is noted on this site as being rude over and over again. I contacted Smith Thompson Security to activate and monitor my home security system. They sent out an installer named Chris who fumbled around my house and constantly called into the office to get help with the installation. After an hour, Chris changed the story from what the Sales person Tyson told me to a new story. I asked for an explanation and he referred me to Collin, a manager. After explaining the difference between Tyson's story and Collin's story, I asked for an explanation. Collin never provided me an explanation, but rather repeated their policy. After many requests for an explanation he stated he would not argue with me. What an insult. We were not argueing. I was simply asking him a question he did not want to answer. As a result he decided to be disrespectful and accuse me of being arguementative to avert the real issue, their company's multiple stories. After hanging up on Collin for acting like an abnoxious child, I asked the installer to leave my property. I imediatly called Mark Thompson to express my dissatisfaction with his company. It was immidiatly evident that Mark has had many dissatisfied customer's since he was defensive and rude from the start. Mark never took responsibility for his companies miscommunication and he proceeded to insult and chastise his customers and the people in the DFW area. After a couple of minutes on the phone with Mark, it was clear where his employees get their rude and lack of customer respect... it was from the owner, Mark, the man who is noted on this site as being rude over and over again. After a having a miserable experience with one of the nationwide companies, I took the advice of my neighbor who is a Dallas cop and called Smith Thompson. Only complaint I have and its small is that they are so busy, it took Ryan nearly a hour to call me back. He was real nice and apologized and just simply said we are so busy right now that we are calling back as quick as we can. (He was in Plano, not India, which is nice though!) He told me to go to their webite and watch the NBC news feature story on them, I did. Anyway, nice guy named Jeremy I think came out and after working for two hours fixing things from the last company, my alarm is now functioning great and monitored even without a lane line. If you are thinking about monitoring, definitely consider the wireless option because when Jeremy shocked me by telling me that all the burglar has to to is cut the wire on the side of my house, I almost fainted. If a policeman says they are good, they must be. I like it so far, nice prices too.

I guess some people have had problems, but I have not. This is my second house that has been done by Smith Thompson, and have always liked them. Whether it's been response time or service issues, it's always been resolved quickly. If I do ever have an issue similar to these other people, I can just cancel because there is no contract. That's my 2 cents worth! ;)

Also why won't any of the 'customers' have the courage to contact me back? Could it be that you are a competitor like I read about all over business magazines these days? Maybe I'm just naive, but I can assure you nothing in these ridiculous comments even remotely resembles the truth. Smith Thompson is growing over thirty percent a year BECAUSE of our service and our rates being so low. That is why I have no problem leaving my REAL name and my real contact info and let the customer decide for themselves the truth. I had their services for 3 yrs. I did not receive calls a few times the alarm tripped.
When I called to enquire, I was directed to the owner. He was so so unbeleivably rude, it completely shocked me. It was truly one of a kind experience. He is a classic example of how businesses lose
customers. Actually 4 of my friends also discontinued for the same reasons.

He is very happy to tell you that you are their customer only because they are cheap.
What kind of a business owner would say that. Since I severey doubted the integrity, I cancelled
my service immediatey.

Beware if you have the wireless monitoring system. It appears ST's wireless monitoring equipment is not all that great. Just found out my system has not been monitored for the last six months, at the very least. This was when the alarm first tripped and I rec'd no call. Last week, when it tripped, I still did not receive a service call. Today, when still no call came after it tripped again, I called them. To make a long story short, the supervisor on duty tells me "you need to let us know when it's not working so we can fix it". How am I to know when the system is broke, so that I may call the people who are paid to monitor the system, to come and fix it?? In the end, I asked for the refund of the last six months of service since obviously no service was provided. She tells me I must speak to Mark, the owner. Within minutes, I receive a call from him. I was shocked at his abrupt attitude. I must say, for someone who's the owner of a company, he sure is lacking in customer service skills. Never asked my side of the story, no attempt at placating the customer; just appallingly rude and arrogant. His end response to me was "If you want to cancel that's fine. I understand. Just know that if we determine that the equipment is non-functional due to weather, you will not be refunded your deposit". When I informed him that I would be reporting this to a consumer advocacy group, he raised his voice! That was it. I thanked him for this time and his attempt at customer service, and that he shall be hearing from them soon., As a side note, he tells me that the only time this equipment fails is when there's bad weather. And if it does fail and must be changed out, you lose your deposit, which was not told to me when I signed on the dotted line....shady service, shady company.
