.

It was the music that lured me down the stairs into the CityLight Sanctuary on that cold Sunday in January of 2006, but it was the sermons that kept me coming back Sunday after Sunday since. For the first few months I always arrived about an hour late, sat in the back row with my arms crossed, and had what I thought to be a healthy level of anger and cynicism. I had been church hopping for some time, but when so much hypocrisy and hate is committed with the stamp of Christianity on it, I was ashamed to even call myself a Christian. However, Sunday after Sunday I found myself injected with hope and filled with a peace, feelings that I had long since forgotten. Pastor Bojan Jancic's sermons left me feeling moved and surprised by God's love. In his series, "Heaven's View of You", I learned of a compassionate and merciful God that I really didn't believe existed. I had unknowingly given God parental traits and therefore felt that He was always waiting for me to make a mistake so he could lambaste me. I believed that at best he was just barely tolerating me and even though I would not have admitted this outright because I "knew" better, in my heart this is what I really believed. God wants us to be free of guilt, shame, and fear. He gives us rest and makes us to "lie down in green pastures." He wants us to be free and able to live in the present moment with gratitude, peace, and joy. The Bible says, "Seek and you will find." That is exactly what CityLight enabled me to do: to seek Him and learn about who God really is and how much He loves us. Each week my heart softened little by little as I realized what an incredible father God is and how unfathomable His love is for us. One that had nothing to do with religion, tradition, or judgement. I am so grateful to CityLight for being that place where I can take time out to do just that.
