When I adopted my first pet as an adult in 1979 Pet Health Store, then "The Pet Bowl," was there for me. Pet Bowl wasn't like the pet stores of my Fifties youth with lots of animals. It was all about the food.

The first Premium brand I bought there was Cornucopia's dry cat food. It came in a very nice *carton* about the size of a large Tropicana Orange Juice carton. Probably had two lbs of food and cost $3 or $4 dollars. Great stuff. They're still around if you look them up but time marched on.

Pet Health Store today has many lines I buy frequently: Wysong, Innova, Canidae, Pet Guard, Evanger's. What these all have in common is that the manufacturers are trying to provide a meaty product that's convenient to feed. PHS has every kind of product you'd need to help a pet enjoy its food and thrive.

That said, despite the ever improving level of customer service, the intelligent uptake of new lines and positive promotion of older lines (PHS' current promotion of both Evanger's and Wysong is an great example), the weekend after weekend of adoption events they've sponsored - the merchandising of the space leaves something to be desired. It's not really a fun place to shop.

But one shops for the merchandise, and personally I'd like to see them pricing their merchandise throughout. Value is important, now more than ever. They are selling a luxury product you could argue is essential to the pets. Let's be out front about what it costs.

Pros: A thoughtful range of healthy products

Cons: Store has never been merchandised up to its potential
