Message from Heartland Brewery & Chop House

One of the few casual chophouses in the Times Square area, this Heartland Brewery combines the rich character of a steakhouse from yesteryear with a modern restaurant sensibility. In addition to a beer-friendly menu specializing in Black Angus beef, you'll find a museum quality collection of pre-Prohibition beer artifacts, including back-bar sculptures, trays, and photographs. Three spacious private dining rooms, all of which have their own separate bars, are available for parties.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Seasonal ales and tasty classic microbrews are poured at the spit-shined bars of this midtown tourist magnet. Since the average wait for a table equals one beer--if not two, without reservations--there's plenty of time to sample the pale, smooth Harvest Wheat with a slice of lemon or the tawny Red Rooster with a frothy head. Table service is speedy, but doesn't encourage lingering.

The Food
The menu, like much of the crowd, hails from America's heartland. For apps, try the cheeses paired with house beers, the blue-cheese nachos or creamy spinach dip. Burgers are served tall and deliciously gooey with bacon, Swiss and good fries, but steaks and pastas fall short of satisfying. Heartland's heart lies in its brews, and the time-honored pub-grub that goes with them.

Key Points

  • Private Party Rooms
  • Convenient to Theaters
  • Award Winning Beers

We eat here everytime we are in the area. This place is just great. The appetizers are wonderful and salads are fresh. The steaks great and properly cooked.

cute little tourist trap

by Destiny T. | top100 Top100 | Rank: 47

I mean tourist trap in the nicest way, but I sort of wonder why people want to gravitate to these huge chains when they could be eating in cute little independant places. You can have chain food back home! The food here is average. No big deal. Perfectly palatable. Drinks are reasonable for a restaurant. Kind of crowded here, which used to be great for meeting internet dates.

You would think you were in Iowa

by Jon G. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,011

Hearty food in central Manhattan! Recommend any of the steaks along with the beers that have been brewed for Heartland. Have enjoyed many dinners there, no bad drinks or food.

Good times with friends

by annieh76

Met up with some friends for some drinks and apps after work one night. We had some great beers and a sampler platter of apps which was nice but not great. It was a good mixed crowd and the service was pretty good. I would come back again for some beers with friends for a pre-dinner meet up!

Pros: Great Assortment of Beer

Good food, and great for large groups

by slg239

We recently held our rehearsal dinner here, with a total of 33 people attending. Heartland has a special number for coordinating large events which made it so simple to pick out the menu and make the reservation. The setup was great, we had our own private room in the back of the restaurant which had its own bar. We did the open beer/wine/soda bar, and they had around 6-8 very interesting beers on tap for us. Food was great, especially the Romanian Tenderloin. I was stunned at how delicious it was as I was not expecting such a well prepared piece of meat from something with "Brewery" in its name. On top of that our two servers that I believe were just for our party were fun and attentive. I have literally no complaints about the experience because it went so smoothly and everything was so good. All the guests were impressed and had a great time. We were actually worried that the reception wouldn't live up to the rehearsal dinner, but luckily it did and then some (S. Dynasty Restaurant).

Pros: Great service, food, and atmosphere

Cons: none

GREAT restaurant!

by cakimmer

The sirloin steak I had was the BEST I've had in as long as I can remember -- a VERY long time! It was cooked perfectly and tender. As much as I hate to say it, it was better than Galagher's, Sardi's (although that experience was also near perfect), and a few other places we went to in the city. The Vanilla Vixen cocktail was also delicious! I will DEFINITELY go there again next time we go to the city.

Good steaks for the price

by DebraCo

The Buffalo steak is only $17.95 which is pretty good considering its decent size. Side dishes don't come with the entrees, except for potato, but don't order one unless you're with a giant group. We got creamed spinach which was extremely light and fresh, but the portion could have fed 6-8 people.

Pros: price, ambiance, food quality

had fun

by billy_shears

My girlfriend and I had visited the restaurant in the Empire State Building. The beer was great and service was excellent. The food was good and came immediately after we ordered it, but the portions weren't all that large. My favorite beer was the Indian River Light....very tasty...the stout was also excellent.

Pros: great beer, huge restaurant, great service

Cons: food portions small

Decent Place in Times Square

by appsfan

If you are looking for a sit down place to have your beer and a couple of appetizers -- Heartland is the place. My personal favorite is the mini burgers and a pint of their seasonal beer (do not order the calamari). My guest had the meatloaf and enjoyed himself. So if you are looking to avoid the lines at Olive Garden and a bar style environment pick Heartland.

The restaurant on 14 Street has more of an after work atmosphere it is always crowded at the bar. So if you are looking to rub elbows with suits, the 14th Street location is your place.

Great look, great food, great prices

by lwny427

I love Heartland Brewery. It is very nice looking, not particularly fancy, but a classic steakhouse look. The booths are spacious and comfortable. I've never had to wait for a table and I've never had a bad dining experience there. Nothing on the menu is very pricey, especially for the city. The buffalo chicken spring rolls are fantastic, so is the fried calamari. Great pre-theater menu. Every waiter/waitress I've had there has been on the ball. There is a variety of beers and you can get a sampler of 5 of them if you can't make up your mind. If you're looking to go out somewhere that won't empty your wallet and will fill you up, this is a great restaurant.

Pros: food, atmosphere, inexpensive

A True Class Act

by latino1

I recently dined at the Heartland Brewery in Times Square and encountered something I thought I never would with a restaurant in NYC....People who care!! First let me say, the food was great. I had the Ribeye steak which was just terrific. This place is known for their beer and it was also great. But what stood out the most was what happened at the end of the meal. My wife wanted to go out for Jazz and I did not know where to go. A gentleman offered his help. He turned out to be the General Manager Carl Clements (as noted on his card). He was EXTREMELY helpful and guided us to a great Jazz club. He actually took the time seaching for the exact club she wanted to go to. I would definately recommend this place. Great food, servcie and great management!!

Pros: Food, General Manager Carl, Service

Cons: Not enough of them

Even if somebody paid me to eat here...

by aquarius2121

I would NEVER eat at this place again. Positively my worst dining experience in New York. As if the rubbery chicken (perfect for a teething puppy) and dried out bacon wasn't enough, the service was awful. It took us 20 minutes to get the ice water we asked for and then another 10 for the straw and then another 5 for the lemon wedges. My first and last experience at Heartland Brewery.

Not recommended.

by miriam625

After going to the top of the Empire State Building, I went next door to the Heartland Brewery (350 5th Ave. at 34th Street). I was very suprised to see there was really no wait. We were seated within 5 minutes. Our waiter did not show up till 15 minutes later. He wasn't very helpful with the menu and took forever to get drinks and food. I ordered the lemon pepper half chicken with mashed potatoes. It was very good and I was extremely happy that is what I picked. The other person with me ordered a hamburger, which they rated as average. Overall, the atmosphere is average, the service poor, and with food, the chicken is the best.

Cons: Poor Service

Great Girl's Night place

by farmerfuzz

My friends and I have girl's night once a month and this is one of our favorite places to go. We get treated very well and before we sit down to our steaks and fried green tomatoes that we love there - we have a few beers at the bar. The bar scene at the Chop House is great, it's a little more upscale then the other Heartlands which is fun since we are all dressed up when we come from work. We always have a great time there and we love the atmosphere - it really is a beautiful restaurant.

Not worth the money

by chmpgnrose

The steaks are overpriced and are not that great. Filet magnon was overburnt on the outside as there was no taste to the crust. The beverage menu does not have a list of non-alcoholic beverages as it leaves customers guessing. It is not truly a steak house to USDA prime standards. It's not really all worth the money for a $30 filet mignon.

Pros: In Times Square, Stead promptly, Wait staff courteous

Cons: Overpriced, Steaks not USDA prime, Steaks no taste

Disappointing

by ARIADAWN

We were trying the food for the first time in the hopes of having a large party here. But we were quite disappointed in the food. The Ginger Chicken Wontons were SOOOOO salty my tonge felt shrivelled. The onion rings were also salted so much you could see the granules. I recognize that they are hoping you will buy more beer, but this was ridiculous. The steak was mediocre, and for 20+ dollars, it didn't even come with a side dish. The creamed spinach was the only worthwhile part of the meal. We didn't even bother trying the rather bland looking desserts. The fact that our waiter disappeared for 20 minutes didn't impress us, either.

Pros: ambience, location

Cons: food, food, food

other tables had fun

by bnnyprincess22

The place was nice and the food was really good, but out waiter wasn't so hot. We saw other waiters with personality laughing and joking with their tables. We felt a little left out. I guess that shows how important a good waiter is.

Pros: food, decor

Cons: poor service

Great food, high prices

by vermontgal

Granted, we are not used to big city prices, so maybe this is a city average.

The lunches cost what dinner does here in Vermont. And the portions were reasonable, but a lunch for four ( 2 adults, 2 kids - no appetizers or beers) cost us $70 after the tip.

It was the kid's menu that I did want to comment on. For $10 you get a limited kid's menu. This is steeper than other spots.

Those with children may want to look elsewhere.

However, the staff is exceptional! That alone made this a plus for our visit.

Pros: great atmosphere, friendly staff, great food

Cons: price is excessive, limited kid's menu

Classy AND cool!

by rodeodog2000

We went to the Chophouse for dinner on a Friday night with three other couples and we were sat right away (without a reservation!) which was great because we had tickets to Urinetown the Musical right across the street. Our waiter seemed to really care about getting us to the show on time, and made some good reccomendations on the menu for doing it. The beers were great, our appetizers came right out, and we even had time for dessert. They had a definite buzz at the bar, but the place is so big that we felt like we had our own private room in the back. One thing to look out for, they do add a tip to the bill if you're more than six people, but at least the waiter told us.

Pros: no wait for table, variety of entrees, cool bar scene

Cons: tip added to groups, steaks a la carte

bottle of red bottle of white

by marydepinto

Bottle of Red & Bottle of White Heartland got me in the mood tonight. My husband and I went to the Chop House on Valentines day, it was our first visit to a Heartland Restaurant. We found the soft lit room, and brick work very warm and inviting. Our server Michael was prompt, and courteous, and took the time to introduce the menu & great beers to us.

We enjoyed Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail which was very fresh, and the Lobster Bisque was very Creamy and warmed my bones. The Black angus was grilled to perfection, and my husbands Lobster & Crab Ravioli was abbondanza !!! Try the Bannana crunch for dessert. Great place, a bit noisy by the bar

Pros: Great Service, Great Beer, Great Steaks

Cons: noisy bar

My heart is here.

by am744

This upper west pub house has good burgers, sandwhiches and beers. guys-you might object to their burgers because they're served on english muffins, but they have good flavor. Although their fries need to be cooked more, they are still good. I recommend their sweet potato.

Pros: beers, sandwhiches, nachos

Great stuff for great times

by ilovetoeatanddrink

I can always count on the Chop House when in Midtown. It can sometimes be crowded and noisy but that's why I love eating and drinking in NYC. I never make it out of there without having the buffalo chicken spring rolls and a home made black cherry soda. Already planning a Jan visit for their delicious barley wine (only once a year.) I can't believe someone complained about having gratuity added when dining out in a group...bummed about the service but things happen sometimes. Don't not check it out based on that review.

Pros: Great for parties, Buffalo chicken rolls, GReat pre theater

Cons: Sometimes croweded

Don't Bother

by wsk

If you want a table for two expect to be seated about 3 inches away from the next party with leaning waiters and a noisy bar. The food is ok but overpriced, there are plenty of other good restaurant s in the area, try Blue Water Grill.

Great food, but pricey!

by avj

We got the buffalo spring rolls for an appetizer, which was excellent! We also ordered the crab cakes in lobster sauce. They were small, but filling and delicious. The service was OK. We sat at the bar, and the bartender was not very friendly at all. This was our first stop in NYC and we thought this was how the service was going to be. I'm glad to say we were wrong! We spent around $50.00 on a few beers, a couple of appetizers and tip... very pricey!

Average Dining Experience

by riversends

Don't get me wrong, the food was good. However, I was dissatisfied with the selection of food and found it to be a little pricey for the amount of food you received.
