I have been fan of Zucco??s Le French Diner for years, however, ever since Zucco??s death, the service of this restaurant has taken a serious downturn.

Recently, I scheduled a dinner here with a business associate who was in town and wanted an ??authentic New York restaurant,? and something different than the typical business spots like STK, Buddakan, etc..

The food was wonderful and service was fine, until the end of the night when the check arrived.

Since it was a business dinner, we both wanted to split the balance between two corporate cards (pretty standard practice, the bill was over $100). When we presented the waiter with our cards, he told us ??we can??t split.? Knowing this is untrue and contrary to American Express?? merchant agreement, I asked to speak to the manager. The new manager, whom I had never met before, told me they don??t ever split bills between cards because of the restaurant??s computer (which is a blatant lie). He said ??it??s not me, it??s the computer? and flatly refused when I suggested we try and charge each card as a separate bill (i.e. two $55 checks).

When I explained to him I had dined at this restaurant before and had never encountered this dilemma, he actually responded with ??So? Am I suppose to give you special treatment because you dine here before?? I couldn??t believe how callous and rude he was, even his body language suggested he felt attacked by my request. I told him all restaurants in NYC that accept Amex will allow you to split a bill and he replied ??but we are not every restaurant in New York.? It was unbelievable.

In the end, I put the bill on my card. When the copy arrived, we asked for a re-print of the receipt (my colleague was going to give me cash and then use the re-printed copy of the receipt to expense her portion of the bill). The waiter told me he ??didn??t have one.? When I re-approached the manager with this request he told me he couldn??t print out another copy of the receipt! Since I had already paid, I was ??out of the system,? and he could not call up my bill!

Needless to say, I reported him to American Express this morning and do not plan on returning. There are so many wonderful restaurants in NYC, why waste your time with lowlife managers who won??t split a hundred dollar bill two-ways.

Save yourself a headache and don??t bother with the rude service and cheapskate tactics.

The frisee aux lardons is my preferred dish at Zucco, if you like this dish you need to order it. Depending on the cook on duty, it gets even better. Then you have the lamb shank, it's not on the menu, but they have it Tuesday through Saturday. The goat cheese salad is also a must-have. The place is very small, so don't even bother going there in large groups, there's simply no room. They don't serve Bud Light, hate ketchup, play all sorts of music at a high volume, and the seats are uncomfortable. Enjoy!

I brought a date to Zucco le French Diner on Saturday Night. We had read the reviews about how small it is, and went early (about 6:30) and had no trouble getting a table. The food was excellent. I would recomend this restraunt to anyone. It is great for a date or a small group because of the atmosphere. Food and drinks are served by the owner who is every interested in making sure everyone enjoys their time.

Stumbled upon this place over Labour Day weekend and were lured in by the menu and the music. Fortunately, we snagged one of the few tables. Much to our surprise and delight, they had Orangina on the drinks list. The bread they brought out was indeed warm and fluffy. My friend ordered the Croque Monseur and was very happy. I had the lamb chops with rattatouille and French Fries, all of which was excellent. The fries were crisp and on the thick side and the meat was flavourful and not tough. We were a bit underwhelmed by dessert (tarte tatin and chocolate mousse, although the tatin came with a nice-sized little dish of creme fraiche). They only take AmEx or cash, which was a bit of a pain, but otherwise, a very charming evening.

Warm bread is served while we waited for our food. Even this bread was good because it was warm and a little flaky. I had the Ham and Cheese in Phyllo ($9.50) which was pretty good. This really is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC right now. The place is filled with character, not to mention the owner who is a character himself. Zucco, the owner and chef (one name only, think Prince or Madonna) is great, friendly, and does everything. He will be your waiter, wine server, busboy, and will seat you. The food was very good and is very reasonably priced. Great date place, although it is tiny. I think max capacity would only be about 12 or 14 with people eating at the bar. I plan to go back, although I do here it can be hard to get a table. We didn't have any trouble and really had a great evening.

One should be used to small environments living in nyc. It is a shame that the previous reviewer did not give it a chance because this is the type of food where you truly savor every bite. Dining at zucco's is quite a food connoisseur's experience! My only advice is do go early so you can get a seat at either the bar or booth. This place tends to get crowded on weekend nights.

One should be used to small environments living in nyc. It is a shame that the previous reviewer did not give it a chance because this is the type of food where you truly savor every bite. Well my girlfriend & I were all excited about going to this byob restaurant & boy were we surprised when we arrived. To say it's small is an understatement. I mean the kitchen is behind the bar & he has clusters of small candles, so needless to say the bar area is EXTREMELY hot & this was in April when it was a cool 60 degrees. I can only imagine what the summer will be like. But to make matters really bad it's NO LONGER BYOB. He got himself a little liquor license. so we would of had to pay $15 dollars for him to open it which is more than we paid for it. Plus there were no tables. So we left, the menu looked decent but you have to go when you can get one of the 2 or 3 tables.

The food is divine and the owner, Zucco, could not be nicer or more attentive. The délicieux menu is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is très confortable. I especially love the French newspaper articles and advertisements that wallpaper the bathroom. Very nice attention to detail.

Lot of character, no upturned noses. I expected Le French Diner to have only sandwiches based on an article I read. To my surprise it had an extensive menu. They have added much since. Although it's very laid back, Zucco has class. I showed up with a wine-connaisseur/trader that enjoys dining at BYOB spots. We took seats at the bar with 2 amazing bottles of wine (one for the appetizers and one to match the entrees) Monsieur Zucco was very accomodating and kept a sharp eye at filling our glasses at the right time at the right level. Get a seat away from the door if possible so you don't get cold.
I love the slightly morbid, dark, ex-patriot vibe of the place. In my dreams, when I get lost in a bad section of Paris, I turn a corner to find a diner with comfort food just like Zucco.
