Cupcakes are good, but the lady who takes order provides the worst customer service.

I've never experienced with someone who would argue back with you and blames it on you. However, when we received the order, we were missing one cupcake,

Sugar Sweet Sunshine is a great place to get my cupcake fix. I love the variety of flavors that they have and the seating space is very welcoming and laid-back. I especially like their lemon cupcake and their strawberry with cream cheese frosting. And even their basic vanilla with vanilla, called the "sunshine", always makes me smile. And at $1.50 each it's definitely one of the better cupcake deals in the city.

I highly recommend the pistachio cupcakes. Each cupcake is $1.50. I noticed that the cupcakes made out of chocolate cake mix tended to fall apart prematurely, so keep this in mind if you're eating on the run.

Pros: $1.50 per cupcake that tastes freshly made

Cons: The chocolate cupcakes tend to fall apart easily.

Possibly the WORST customer service I have ever encountered in my 8 years in NYC. Obnoxious arrogant and down-right rude. And - possibly the BEST cupcakes I've ever had. If you're principled enough - go somewhere else. But the cupcakes really are special - some of the staff on the other hand...not so much.

I am very suprised at the negaive reviews of this place, I live 2 blocks away so i pass by this place every day and stop in at least 3 times a week. I get nothing but cheerful and prompt service each and ever time i go there from every employee that helps me. I have tried the cookies, cupcakes, and muffins and they are all excellent. The frosting can be a tad sweet at times but i just take some off now. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. just a side not to the people who complain about how the place has been past business hours and they wanted service and feel they were treated rudely....If you have ever worked in retail industry, places have buisness hours for a reason and if you show up too early or too late its your own fault..(see the review on the girl who wanted a birthday supcake after the store was closed)...yes customer service is important, but people do have lives they have to get too...take care

Cheap, better than any of the other cupcake shops in NYC. If you like peanut butter, you must get the peanut butter pie.

Although I wasn't sold on their baked goods when I first tried them, I attempted to place an order at a colleague's suggestion for an office affair. The horror began when I placed the first call to find out the specifics of placing an order. Although I was put off by an employee's attitude, things got worse when the owner got involved. I was motified by her tone as she proceeded to berate me like I was her child and cancelled an order that I had placed with another employee. Had I read the reviews from other customers who found the owner reprehensible, I would have taken my business elsewhere (considering that I was never sold on "saltysourdarkness" as they should be known). Reading from the owners' bios, they should have learned manners when they learned to bake their cupcakes. I hope the owner that I spoke with remembers that a business' survival is never guaranteed, and she may have to go back to her "gypsie" lifestyle after she drives away customers. I would give this place a zero rating if I had the choice.

I am a baker, and I live to find bakeries in my field. Cakes and cupcakes are my field and these people can bake. The Strawberry cupcakes are the BOMB!... The red velvet needs help... icing not right and the almond flavoring is too heavy and really not needed. Overall. GREAT! Moist... I will be back!

lets start with the cliche- the name of the place is sugar sweet sunshine! for cupcakes sake....so what do you expect when you walk through the door?....but it rained hard today and its been raining too often recently on this magical place and heres why.....
ive been frequenting this spot for about 8 months and when i say frequenting i also mean i bring out of town visitors here, recommend it to everyone, order in bulk, and whenever im in the nabe im having a cupcake and a coffee here. its a destination for me despite the long lines. its quaint, cute and bright and the cupcakes are absolutely delicious. but theres a dark, bitter storm brewing over this place. the SERVICE: in a word, appalling! the countergirls, eight times out of ten have an attitude worse than hurricane katrina. im talking about blatant eye rolling, the why-are-you-asking-me-for-anything body language, and just general huffy puffy exasperation.....heaven forbid i would want my coffee served to me hot. today made me really sour. i was so disappointed that neither me nor my buddy ordered the usual cupcakes after the coffee debacle because we didnt want to interact with the nasty girl behind the counter. also watching her interact with other customers and their reactions. ...not sunny.please fix this sugar, sweet! once again, as someone in the biz: once the sun sets on your passion for finding good people to sell your product, you might be in for a long, dark night.

This is my first review on this site, so its obviously very important. I like to think of myself as a cupcake expert---in every city that I have visited or lived in around the world, I make sure to try cupcakes from every place possible. This store is lovely. Although I need to say that their chocolate almond frosting has a very strange flavor that I struggle to appreciate, the pumpkin and vanilla cupcakes make up for it. They are moist and interesting, and not at all generic. The store itself seemed a bit dirty each time I went there, but who really cares! Don't waste your money on Magnolia--this place is 10000 times better.

I needed a gift in a pinch and Sugar Sweet Sunshine came through. I am in Boston, my friend is in New York and (of course!) I was late on the draw for her birthday gift. I called and was stoked to have a friendly voice on the other end as opposed to the main stream cupcake cafe's I had called before. Their turnaround was great, and their delivery was timely and reasonably priced. Best of all, no minimums! My friend really didn't need 18 cupcakes; by going with these guys I was able to have four delivered. All in all, it was a great experience and I am glad I wasn't caught up in the "name" of the bakery, but the service - it really paid off!

Cupcakes are dry and not inspired at all (there are too many other great cupcake spots/ bakeries to make this your go-to). But what really sours the deal is the nasty and downright passive aggressive owner/employee that you must deal with when placing special orders. I have never in my life been treated as rudely as I was when trying to make an order. I will never go back there and beware: the customer is not only never right, but not treated with any respect either.

I live in the neighbourhood and I frequent this joint at least 3 times a week. I work in a hospital planning events for medical students, patients, and faculty and I work 12-14 hours a day. This morning (7:50am, as it's my only free time) on my way to work I stopped by to get some info about ordering for big events, but I was shocked and appalled by the treatment and behaviour of one of the owners. I apologised for bothering her and I politely asked her for a minute of her "precious" time. She kept cutting me off before I even got a word out and she asked me to leave in a very rude manner. In fact, she shooed me away like I'm some kind of animals. You don't even treat animals this way. Even the flour/sugar delivery guys was appalled and rolled his eyes at her nasty behaviour.

I understand that she may be having a bad day, but this is not the way to treat people, especially your customers. At first I didn't believe any rude service reviews written here, but people it's 100% true! Shame on you! I know that you're making tons of money and you probably don't care much about making more money off me, but your behaviour is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. I seriously advice people in the LES to boycott this establishment as it's not welcome in the neighbourhood.

Great moist but not too sweet cupcakes! I did not get to try them all but they four varieties I did try were all spectacular.

About the customer service...while I was there someone who placed a special order on rush without notifying the baker came in to pick up her cake. Even they were accommodating the customer, the cake was just out of the oven and frosting it would be difficult as the baker explained. The customer was still mad and proceeded to rant and demand her money back which the owner gladly did.

What do people expect from customer service? If they are quick, accurate and pleasant that is good service. These people are expected to be uber friendly, charming, witty, entertaining and extremely accommodating or else customers are quick to get huffy???

I'm a cupcake junkie and have been to many of the more well known bakeries- Magnolia, Buttercup, Crumbs, and I can honestly say that Sugar Sweet Sunshine has the best cupcakes overall. Their buttercream icing is NEVER too sweet and always light and fluffy. I have never gotten rude service from them and even ordered a cake not on their menu and they agreed to make it for me. The order came out perfect, the writing was exactly as I specified. When I asked her to see it she didn't hesitate at all and was glad to show me. I've never ever had a bad experience there and I visit Sugar Sweet Sunshine at least once a week. Don't pass judgement before you try it!! Definitely worth a try, you won't be sorry.

BTW- the pistachio cupcakes are the best and my absolute favorite!

These ladies (and gentlemen) make some damn good cupcakes (personally a huge fan of the pistachio cc's), and the cafe is a very cute spot to hang out and get your sugar and caffeine fix. What a great addition to the LES. I hope they stick around for a long time.

I felt I had to comment on that person who was actually indignant that the staff wouldn't let her/him in after they closed....how insensitive of that customer! These folks probably have been working their butts off all day, are beat, and this person thinks they should still serve him/her even after they are clearly closed? Is this customer living in la la land?
In any case, you won't find a better vanilla cupcake anywhere, and you can order (they don't usually have these the display case) this amazing strawberry cake or cupcakes with cream cheese icing. The pistashio cupcakes are also to die for, moist and not too sweet. The chai latte with soy is very tasty also.
It's a very nice place to just lounge in too, with possibly the last place in Manhattan where the coffee is still a dollar. People are nice and friendly and there is a definite non-hipster vibe to the place (which is a very good thing), even if it is populated by them.
Don't miss this bakery if your in the neighborhood.
Enjoy!

Has the world gone crazy? I wanted to write a review about this great bakery that I found through friends and I read some of the previous reviews. I couldn't believe the audacity of some people to find fault with an establishment for not wanting to re-open a store after it's already closed for the day. And to expect cheerful service once they were nice enough to accomodate the birthday friend. Would you pound on the door of the Post Office or your Doctor's office to demand service after hours...it's so rude! I work in retaul and I can tell you when the day is done...it's done. Furthermore, to the post who complained about the credit card minimum...what city does this person live in? It's in virtually every business except Starbucks who started the trend of being able to charge a $1.50 coffee. Small biz get charged per transaction and this is why many small biz are cash only. Minimums are pretty standard out there. Now, I've vented, I can give MY review. Since finding sugar Sweet sunshine, a couple weeks ago, I've been there several times and have quickly been making my way through their menu! I can't stop! Everything is delicious so far...great cupcakes, great puddings! And so nice! I love that the owners are there and when they're not, their staff (esp. the big burly man in the tank top who is so yummy sweet!!! and a treat all by himself!) represents them well. I'm so happy sugar sweet is in my life now. Don't let the naysayers sway you! This place is a keeper!

My rating is based on customer service and not how good/bad the desserts are at this supposedly Sugar Sweet Sunshine. After a birthday dinner for a friend, the ten of us made a mad dash to the store to pick up a birthday cupcake before it closed. We were probably two minutes too late because there were still customers inside. Just as they were turning off display lights and stacking up chairs, we made a silent plea through the store window and door to allow us to make a purchase. My friend called the store since they refused to look at us and recognize our pound-puppy faces and allowed him to buy only one cupcake. A big burly man in a tank brought the one cupcake out with no sugar, no sweet, and no sunshine. In fact, he looked very sourly and displeased. He took my friends money, locked the door, and re-opened the door to give change back. Based on such an experience, I doubt if my friends and I will ever try these cupcakes.

I went to Sugar Sweet Sunshine because I heard all of this hype about how great their cupcakes were. I bought a few cupcakes and aside from each tasting exactly alike they were nauseating after only a few bites. This should not be the case with good buttercream. While I was there I saw one of the owners acting in a particularly nasty way to a customer (the one below with the credit card) and then no sooner did I witness that then I heard her yelling at someone on the phone. I honestly don't know what the big deal is about this place. There are so many better...Magnolia, Buttercup, etc. The cupcakes aren't very good and the management is nasty and obviously treats their customers in a horrible manner.

I recently went to Sugar Sweet Sunshine at my friend's suggestion because he said they have great Red Velvet Cupcakes. As a big fan of red velvet cupcakes I was excited. However, when I tried to pay with my credit card I was informed there was a $10.00 minimum on credit card purchases. When I complained that Credit Card Minimums are prohibited according to the Merchant Agreement that the Store entered into with Visa. The owner then came over and rudely agreed to take my credit card after stating it was her right to charge a credit card minimum and that if I had a problem with that I could shop elsewhere. She then agreed to take my credit card and stated that if I had a problem with it I could report it. As we were leaving the store she then preceded to enter into a profanity laced complaint about my insistenceTo on using a credit card.

To top off what was already a bad experience...the cupcake wasn't good at all.

Pros: Nothing.
Cons: Incredibly rude and obnoxious owner, bad cupcakes.

After having had good cupcakes here, I decided to order a birthday cake for my son. I actually ordered 2 cakes, since I couldn't decide on the flavor. I ordered a chocolate cake in addition to a strawberry shortcake. Prior to placing the order, I asked the clerk if they put fresh strawberries on the cake. They asked someone in the back and confirmed that they in fact did. In additon, I asked them to write Happy 7th Birthday Matthew on the cake. When I arrived to pick up the cake, they pulled out the chocolate cake. They were ready to place it in the box without showing me first, but I asked them if I could take a look. They showed me the cake hesitantly, and I realized it only read Happy 7th Birthday. When I told them it was missing my son's name, they said rudely, "well, that's not what this slip says." I told them it was for my son's birthday and they sighed and said they could try to squeeze his name in. I asked them to do just that, and they squeezed his name along the outer rim of the cake. They were annoyed. They packed the chocolate cake up and went into the case to get the strawberry shortcake. They didn't want to show it to me, but I glanced over and noticed there were STRAWBERRY PRESERVES placed on top of the cake!!! I was mortified. When I questioned them, and reminded them that I was told they used FRESH strawberries, they chuckled and said, "we don't use REAL fresh strawberries." When i asked why, they simply replied , "well, that's just too expensive." Then they condescending told me that they used fresh strawberries that are frozen. They said it was the same thing. The strawberry preserves AND blue sprinkes melted into the whipped cream. The cake looked awful (like tie dye), and the owner (the woman who was helping me) knew it. She didn't care about the dissatisfied and unhappy look I had on my face. She simply gave me the boxes, turned around and walked away. I was flabbergasted. I will never go to this bakery again--not that the owners care.

The cupcakes here are delicious. I am pretty plain when it comes to desserts and prefer the vanilla which were fantastic. Not too much frosting, and not too too sugary either. My family and friends rave about the pumpkin, pistachio, and lemon as well. I would definitely recommend this place over Magnolia for cupcakes (but the peanut butter cookies at Magnolia are oh so good!).

i don't really like cupcakes all that much, but i'll got out of my way in ny to have these cupcakes again. even though we walked around all day and the cupcakes were smashed when we finally ate them, they were the best cupcakes i've ever had. the red velvet and the oowee goowee were the ones i got to try but i'm sure everything is great b/c it was still early and there were only a few left on each tray.

Made a trip to the lower east side for breakfast at Sugar Sweet Sunshine and it was definitely worth the trip. At first I thought the girl at the counter was a little cold but she was very busy packing alot of cupcakes up for delivery (never stopped while we were there) but had a nice conversation with her before we left.
The red velvet and chocolate cupcakes were good, but the pistachio and pumpkin cupcakes were amazing, the best cupcakes I've ever had!!! They were so good we ordered another round of pumpkin cupcakes (even tho we were going to Katz Deli for "lunch" straight after)!!! Wanted to take away a dozen of those beauties but had a long day of shopping in SOHO and Chinatown ahead us so regretfully I didn't buy any.

Pros: Pumpkin & Pistachio Cupcakes

Cons: Location

This tiny, gritty little cupcake bakery perfectly represents the spirit of the Lower East Side: a little punk-ish, independent in spirit, perhaps a touch cramped, and yet successful. I tried two cupcakes: the black-and-white and the pumpkin. The black and white is a chocolate cupcake topped with vanilla buttercream. I thought the cake itself good but not great: nothing particularly wrong, but the chocolate flavor was not particularly rich or exciting. The buttercream, too, was competent, but not spectacular. It had a slightly processed taste that suggested a bit too much confectioners' sugar.

The pumpkin cupcake, on the other hand, was a happy little treat and reflected the name of the establishment well. It tasted like a carrot-cake, except made with pumpkin, complete with cream cheese frosting. The cake was moist, the frosting brought out the flavor of the pumpkin, and the overall effect was cheerful...

Sugar Sweet Sunshine makes the best cupcakes in the city. I've been to pretty much every other cupcake place and now I only go to SSS. The cupcakes are perfect. The cake is moist and the frosting is just sweet enough to give you a big mouthful of sugar without making you sick. I love the Sunshines (yellow cake with vanilla butter cream frosting) but I'll also occasionally indulge in a coconut. I love that they have a variety of flavors and types.

Let the sheep go stand in line. I just want awesome cupcakes!

I tried both the pistachio and pumpkin cupcakes today and they were both perfectly moist and flavorful. The icing was nicely buttery but not at all overpowering. I was impressed by how well the pistachio flavor came through. The counter person was very polite and efficient. I would go back the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

We passed this cute-looking bakery and decided we had to go in. All the desserts looked good, we tried one of the cupcakes with buttercream frosting. Honestly, it wasn't very good. It was overly sweet, in fact it was so overwhelmingly sweet, I had enough after two bites. When buttercream is done properly, it's so good -- but it was a disappointment here.

I was surprised when I bought the cupcakes here after reading these reviews. I bought a few dozen assorted cupcakes for my adult classmates. Almost everybody scraped off the frosting because it was disgusting. It was too sweet, didn't taste like buttercream and was crusty in places. I have had cupcakes made from mix with canned frosting that were better. Definitely prefer The Cupcake Cafe, and they are so much more pretty. The ones at Sugar, Sweet Sunshine looked like little kids had made them.

I ordered several dozens of cupcakes for my birthday and the person who took my order thought it was for a different week. When I called before I picked them up, the staff were very nice about it and filled my order within an hour! The cupcakes were very good and all my friends asked where I got them from! The pistachio one is highly recommended!

I hate when people just abuse this "review" site with garbage. I'm shocked that you received bad service from this place...or are you a disgruntled employee or competing bakery(never can tell anymore)? Whatever the case may be, I'm posting because I've never had anything but perfect service from them. I have ordered anywhere from 100 to 1000 cupcakes for my corporate events and never had any problems. They always go out of the way to make sure design and packaging was exactly what I needed for my events. They really get a little out of hand with emails and phone calls but I guess that ensures that everything is exact to order which can be a good thing. Recently did a 500 cupcake order with a specific logo and color for the event I was planning. The order was delivered a little late but the cupcakes were perfect from the logo to the taste.( I love the pistacio!). So say what you will about this place, it's always been pretty good for me.

Please feel free to email me with questions: foodyfoodyfoody@gmail, no hiding behind a screenname for me.

I got a recommendation for this bakery and placed a very large, very important order. They TOTALLY botched the order, and then did nothing to remedy it (or reimburse). Most of what we bought from them was unusable.
On top of that, the stuff neither looked pretty nor tasted good (which are really the only two important things when it comes to baked goods!)
On top of that, the service was HORRIBLE - I was shocked at how much they don't care about customer service.
I wouldn't order from them again if they were the last bakery in NY.

I've tried every single variety of their cupcakes here and they're goood. My favorites are the pistachio and the pumpkin spice cupcakes. Yummo. The cupcakes can be pricey, but they're worth the occasional indulgence.

The cupcakes were very disappointing. I thought the shop was cute and very much needed in that area, but I will never go back. The girl at the counter was very rude and seemed annoyed that I was ordering just one cupcake. The cupcake was tasteless and lacked an adequate amount of icing. I honestly do not see how they stay in business. Buttercup Bake Shop is #1 in my book.

I had the Coconut Cupcake which was pretty good. But then I tried the Red Velvet one & it was dry & the icing was not good at all. That was enough cupcakes for me for one day. To be honest, I have tasted better cupcakes than this.

Before I start gushing about their actual baked goods, I do need to make a point and say that one of their owners really is NOT so nice. She can be very rude and short! Having said that, they really do make the best cupcakes around. Their 'black and white' cupcakes are moist and yummy, and they have great flavored ones like pumpkin and lemon...the location really isn't sketchy unless you're deathly afraid of hipsters, it's the lower east side for crying out loud.

This place is a can't miss when you've got a craving for sweet.
The cupcakes are fantastic and totally resonably priced! They have this homemade quality to them that combines with the warm and quaint surroundings to enhance the ensuing sugar rush even that much more.
As the East side alternative, i would choose this place over Magnolia bakery anyday!

They have terrific cupcakes, but everyone knows that. The real secret is the other desert options.
The strawberry rubarb pie is amazing , so is the variety of trifles they sell by the cup.
Plus you can order a custom cake or pie for any occasion.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine stands out by offering a variety of exotic flavors where Mangolia offers very few. The basic Buttercream cupcake is as good or better than Magnolia's. Sugar Sweet Sunshine variety of flavors: German Cake, Pumpkin, Lemon, etc are all excellent.

There is actually FRIENDLY SERVICE unlike Magnolia, plus NO LINE and plenty of SEATS so you can sit down and eat your cupcake.

The atmosphere of Sugar Sweet Sunshine is like that of a cafe, with a LES feel. Missing from the atmosphere of Sugar Sweet Sunshine is the 'I just got off the train to Penn Station, someone please take my picture' vibe. And on that matter, Magnolia can keep it.

The prices are also slightly more reasonable than Magnolia but basically the same ballpark.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine is the true New Yorker's Magnolia.

The cupcakes are adorable, but they don't have any 'real' chocolate icing. All of the chocolate-looking icing is their "chocolate-almond" icing-- that's their only choice and although I typically find almond flavoring delicious, this type is terribly disappointing....

My favorite at this place is the pumpkin spice cupcake...I picked up an assortment for a birthday in the office and this one won hands down!! The frosting at Magnolia is too sweet for and that's saying a lot considering my sweet tooth is pretty far out there! I also ordered a birthday cake from here (tried Magnolia but it was too short notice!) and it was fanatastic! I also had the best chai latte of my life here...and it wasn't ridiculously overpriced.
Would definitely recommend coming here.

Ok so I actually like their vanilla frosting more than Magnolia's, but I like Magnolia's chocolate frosting more than the chocolate-almond frosting at sugar Sweet sunshine... which surprised me a bit actually, since most people said they liked the chocolate frosting at sSs more. In any case, their vanilla frosting is reeeeeeeeally yummy, the cake itself has a nice flavor and is more moist than Magnolia's, and they're just really great cupcakes overall. This may sound strange describing a cupcake, but these taste more modern than Magnolia's... for some reason, Magnolia's taste very old-fashioned... so if you're not into the old-fashioned taste, these are great, simple and classic cupcakes. Cute bakery too... although the lower East side is (obviously) pretty sketchy, so I'm not sure if I'd go back when there's still Magnolia's and Crumbs in better areas. Definitely worth stopping in though if you're in the area.

On the block between uber-chic Schiller's and 'Inoteca, this little bakery is a breath of unassuming fresh air. The furniture is old and mismatched, the walls are bare and the baker is the counter person, the espresso…
