I am addicted to this restaurant. the food is tasty and not greasy. If you like genuinely spicy food that is full of complex flavor this is the place for you. If you can't take chili, let them know.because their spicy food is actually hot. It's also great for vegetarians. Try the manchurian balls and gobi manchurian. The wok omelette is also fab.

I went there with my family. It was a nice place with a nice food. Staff is very welcoming and atmosphere is very warm. Our waiter was helpful, I just wish that he would smile more, he seemed too serious. Other than that, I love the place.

Great food... decent service. Okay prices.

We go a few times a year and often when we have guests in town. It's always a hit.

I love Indian-Chinese and it's hard to find the real deal - typically have to head over to Edison, NJ. Chinese Mirch is great, and a lot easier to get to.

I'm confused by all the one star reviews - either this place is very erratic (possible - only been once so far, though expect to go back often!) or something else is going on (e.g., if you aren't into really spicy, or are totally used to "regular" Indian or "regular" Chinese, this place will seem odd and disorientating.

I have never complained about a restaurant in a public forum, but I feel that the service i received at Chinese Mirch was so offensive that it should be made known. During our dinner, icy cold water from the overhead AC rained on me. I alerted the waiter, who did nothing to help even though I was left standing, dripping wet, in the middle of the restaurant. After 10-15 minutes of this awkwardness, we got fed up waiting and requested for the bill and a doggy bag for our remaining food. Our dinner experience thus ruined, the manager did not even have the courtesy to take anything off our bill and only cut out the $5 rice after we insisted. This doesn't even qualify for poor, inattentive service -- unethical, cheapskating customers would be more appropriate.

I really can't understand how this place is always packed when I walk by. I decided to try this place one night, falling for the whole 'well, if it's packed must be good' trap. Big mistake!

The popular shrimp appetizer is basically a $12 bowl of deep fried dough. The shrimp were so small that I couldn't even taste them. The food is basically on the level of a third grade chinese take out...if that!

The food is overpriced for what it is and really not enjoyable if you know what proper food should taste like.
Do yourself a favor and go to Curry in a Hurry across the street!!!

This restaurant is a small cozy place that creatively mixes Chinese and India cuisines. It's really good and decently priced. The ambiance could have been decorated better though.

I have been eating at this place for the last 2 years and there is no comparing this with the greasy soy loaded stuff in jersey. The mirch 65 , chicken hot garlic and the chili paneer is exceptional. Service has always been efficient and we skip the lines on weekends because we live in the city. Head on a week night such as Tuesday and it is awesome !

been going to chinese mirch since the past few years, i have really loved my experience every time. Take a lot of guests here and they are always raving ! Gotta have the lollipops, 65 and the twin pepper lamb. Some times the food is spicier than other days, the waiter said since they use only fresh chilies the spice level varies- either ways its always flavorful, unlike regular chinese. Service is friendly.

This restaurant is a disgrace to Indian chinese cuisine. I went there tonite and am compelled to write this review so you do not waste your money.

Ordered a Gobhi Manchurian (cauliflower chilli) and it was served fried in cornflour batter with raw garlic and spring onions. Hello!!!! look up a receipe if your chef is confused. Also the hot and sour soup left us wondering if they served us the wrong soup (tasted horrible).

Chili chicken was floating in oily gravy. I guess if you put a chilli garnish, you have a right to call that deplorable dish "chilli chicken". Forget the Hakka Noddles, all we tasted were more raw vegetables and none of the wok style cooking that we were anticipating.

Next time, maybe we will drive all the way to Ming in Edison if the indo chinese food craving ever dares to appear after this horrible experience.

It is so dissapointing when the simplest dishes that are impossible to go wrong, are wrong in the restaurant.

Let me start by saying that I am a native Indian and I know what Indian Chinese food should taste like. I went to this place tonight to have some good food and was looking forward to the experience as there are very few Indian Chinese restaurant in New York. Needless to say, I had the worst experience ever. The food quality is HORRIBLE!!. It was so bad that I had to have an ice-cream post dinner to get the bad taste off my mouth.. Also, I had to wait for good 20-25 minutes for this experience. My evening was ruined. One Advice: Stay away from this place. You are better off getting some kabobs and chai from next door instead.

I did forget to mention one thing about this place that i read in a lot of reviews. That the people who work there are the most rude people i've ever seen or met. And i also agree to one of the reviews that very rude to Indian customers. Even though the people working there have their origins from India still the look down upon others. i dont know if they realise that all these review will change what others feel about the god forsaken place.

quantity of appetizer dumpling & spring roll very small.. price high..
dumpling tasteless.. would u like to eat at a place where hair is found on food and
instead of deserved apology servers argue to take it off..
only palatable dish was gobi manchurian.. needs lot of improvement

This is one of the best indo-chinese food joints but very disappointed with its consistency..does not provide same taste everytime...I ordered Paneer chilli dry...i loved it...the next time i ordered the same....they got me paneer chilli with gravy...the waiter insisted tht it was dry....but it wasnt the same as my last time's experience...
I ordered Ginger noodles...they got us schezwan noodles...
Why do the waiters dont write down the orders on a piece of paper if they cant memorize the orders!
I should say ...the place is good but they should improve their service quality....and should get us what we have ordered....

Each time i eat here and have leftovers, they only pack half of a tiny chinese container full. The only explanation I can think of is that they are re-serving my half eaten singapore noodles to other customers?! that sounds crazy, but that is the only logical explanation because, why else would you even bother getting out a container and putting any of the food in it and also bringing it back to me!? The food is delicious and I was really looking forward to the leftovers.

ps- needless to say, customer service also leaves much to be desired.

I was taken here by a group of enthusastic Indain co-workers. I'm a very open-minded diner, but this experience was just dissapointing. We had to wait a long time for a table. The food was expensive, very unfilling, was served in gloppy sauce that was entirely too spicy (even for Indian food) and they charged a lot for rice, without which the food was totally inedible. I left needing ice cream to cool my mouth down and to fill me up.

I have been frequenting Chinese Mirch since they had opened. I commend them for being a pioneer in bringing Indian Chinese food to the states, but I have noticed that their quality has been plummeting with each visit.

There was a hair in our food and when we informed the waiter, he plucked it out and walked away. This was a bunch of B.S. and we should have walked out, but after waiting for 45 minutes its hard not to feel hungry. They need to get their stuff together and unfortunately nobody else in "Curry Hill", has managed to surpass them.

I used to recommend them, but now I will trek out to Queens for some Tangra Masala... Chinese Mirch lost me and whole bunch of people as customers.

I have been a regular at chinese mirch and have also eaten in many other indo chinese restaurants, and the one thing I can say is that the food never disappoints. The restaurant is always busy so I would recommend going early. The new manager is great ! Really friendly. The food is spicy and not all dishes are for those with a weak stomach. I love this place!

I just made an account on CitySearch to review this restaurant. I trust CitySearch's reviews when I choose restaurants in NYC and I think that people should know this information. There is always a wait for this restaurant and the waiters are never correct as to when you will be seated. They are also very rude. They will tell you that you are up next to be seated and then seat someone else instead of you. Also, as for quality of food, the rice in this restaurant is also always undercooked and this place is completely overrated. It is definitely not worth the wait.

This restaurant used to be one of my favorite places in NY when I craved IndoChinese, thus leading me to introducing a number of my friends to it. I am so dissapointed that the quality of the food has deteriorated so much over the past few months. I thought the 1st time it was just a one off but I have given it a number of tries and the food gets worse. From the spicy fried rice to the chicken manchurian that is either full of chillies or solid particles that are undercooked. I am not sure if the chef has changed or what but I suggest Chinese Mirch look into this as those huge lines they experience will soon be gone.

I don't understand the rave reviews of everyone else. I felt so strongly about this place that I made an account on Citysearch JUST to write a review.

This place was over-priced, underportioned, and decent tasting. A lamb curry costs you $15 and is about as filling a fast food hamburger. Want rice? It doesn't come with the meal. A large bowl will cost you $4. A complete ripoff. They did fill up my water 6 times.

Be warned: All of their food is pre-made. It comes out about 5 minutes after you order it. Fast service? Sure, but it's because they've made huge amounts of it in the kitchen and they just scoop it out when you order. I was there with two friends and it happened to all of us.

Not only that, but it all tastes the same! I got Manchurian Lamb, and my friends got two different kinds of chicken. They all tasted very similar. All three. Perhaps they make one huge vat of food that they then dump different kinds of meat in. I don't know.

My friends got appetizers, I did not, and they said that these were very good, much better than the meal.

I would never go to this place again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If you want to spend $20 on pre-made food that won't fill you up, then this is the place to go. Else, go to any of the other 25 ethnic restaurants on the block.

I have to say, the food was really good, but I definitely felt like anymore, and I would've been having heartburn all night long. Spicy food, very good, but pricey. We ordered the fried okra, it was awesome, crunchy, just perfect. The chicken lollipops weren't very impressive. Definitely would be back if I didn't fear for my heart and wallet. Busy on Friday nights, definitely make reservations.

chinese mirch was the first indo-chinese place on the "curry hill" block of lexington avenue, and it remains the best. when i first went there, it was a tiny little place. but its popularity soared, and they expanded to include a whole new second floor. so if i get a craving for this food, i wait until a quiet weeknight. i really would not recommend going on the weekend; if you do, you will have to deal with a long, long wait that goes out the door.

i like the food because it is an odd combination of many asian flavors. the food is exotic and very spicy, so if you hate spicy food, this is not the place for you. but if you are a fan of asian food and want to try something new, this is your place. for instance, i've had pakoras at indian restaurants, but the okra fritters at chinese mirch, with the spicy dipping sauce, are perfectly crisp and actually taste like they are made from fresh vegetables. i also love the mirch potatoes, which are like home fries, but spicy and sweet and sour. this place does noodles and fried rice very well also, again because of the spicy-sweet-sour flavoring they use in mostly every dish.

the service is polite, but it is not 5-star restaurant perfect -- this is a casual dining spot. you sometimes have to ask for things twice, but there are more than enough waiters working there to get you what you need. i've personally never had a problem with the service, even when it is busy, and every time i go there, the host remembers me and my friends, and we only eat there once every couple of months. if you haven't been, you should try it at least once -- you'll be pleasantly surprised.

the service is polite, but it is not 5-star restaurant perfect -- this is a casual dining spot. you sometimes have to ask for things twice, but there are more than enough waiters working there to get you what you need. i've personally never had a problem with the service, even when it is busy, and every time i go there, the host remembers me and my friends, and we only eat there once every couple of months. if you haven't been, you should try it at least once -- you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Pros: delicious, exotic food

Cons: weekends are packed to ridiculousness

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city...Sure, the service may not be the quickest, and the place might not be as fancy as some of the other alternatives, but the food is phenomenal and the prices are totally affordable. Everyone I've brought to this place has fallen in love as soon as the appetizers were brought to the table. I've tried almost every dish on the menu and there are not very many that I would not recommend. They have a great variety of veg and non-veg dishes. Anyone who thinks the food here is not good probably also thinks that steamed vegetables are delicious. I wouldn't exactly call this food "fusion", because it definitely tastes more Chinese than Indian, but its definitely different and its definitely guaranteed to please your palette. The service could be a little better, but it is not bad enough to deter me and many others from making several return trips. If you're looking for a great spot to have a low-key, casual dinner, then don't let service woes keep you away from this place. If you are a pretentious food critic (or a wannabe), then this place might not be for you. My mouth is watering as I'm writing this review, and I think I'm going to eat here tonight.

Pros: Great food, not usually a very long wait

Cons: Service can be slow at times, space is kind of crammed

Previous reviewers could not be talking of Chinese Mirch! The food at Chinese Mirch is superb and service is very attentive. Weekends are super crowded which is why we always choose Mondays or Tuesdays rather than wait for a table. The mirch 65 and the crsipy lamb are to die for !

Manager Riyaz would like to turn away customers at 1.45 PM although Lunch service hours state open till 2.30 PM, Manager says we have Chinese staff not Indian staff who will work to accomodate you Indian customers?, Server refused to seat us on table for four saying that he would have to take away two set covers. Overall attitude of indifference to customers, on being asked the Owners name just kept giving a blank look. Sincerely doubt if Mr Vikram Lulla the owner is aware about how his customers feel about the restaurant.
Waiter or standyby manager Mathew had a deadpan face and newer once smiled, never seen staff feel so much sad to see customers.

This was a place that I, when I first ate there, wanted to go back right away. NOT ANYMORE!!! With a plethora of Indian restaurants in the area, offering great lunch buffets, this restaurant has no lunch specials and charges you dinner prices for inedible hole in the wall chinese food. Not a hint of Indian in the mix, just the waiters. This was a nightmare and the only solace to horrible food and service was the delivery of the wrong but cheaper bill. I paid it, left and will NEVER go there again!! This is my first review of any restaurant and I had to get on immediately and warn anyone that might get sucked in. This place is atrocious with the biggest capital "A" that you could ever find!

Pros: Bad

Cons: Just Plain Awful

.

Terrible, there are so many restaurants in that neighborhood to choose from and few can compete with how terrible this place is. It looks nice, the waiters are dressed professionally but they are better at holding up the wall than providing what one might call service.

Food was bland chinese food with no noticable indian influence, only thing that exceeded expectations were the prices. Skip It.

Pros: You can tell your friends you ate at a Indian Chinese fusion restaurant.

Cons: Discovery that Indian Chinese fusion is really just terrible chinese food.

This is the first time leaving any feedback on Citysearch but I felt obliged to vent my frustrations. In January, I went to the restaurant in person to see that there was a wait. However, an Indian girl behind me told the reservationist she had a group of 8 and the reservationist ignored us, a couple of 2. He specifically looked at us, ignored us until I asked if we could give him our request for 2. After waiting some more and his not taking our name / number, we ended up leaving without making any scene. The next try was to call in an order at 8:45pm Tuesday. By 10pm, we received nothing and heard nothing. Did a chicken need to be caught or shipped from abroad? Sorry but I have patience for a food delivery but I didnt feel I should need to call after 1 hour to get a status. I think everyone should be warned about the service and poor dealings with customers. My advice is to stay away and hope that the restaurant staff will change their ways...or close shop!!!

Cons: Service truly is one of the WORST - delivery and dine in

The food kinda gets to the spicier side.Service is very laxed. Lots of if's and but's. Not recommended.Every complaint tends to be blamed to the owner's decision

Went there for lunch and experienced appalling customer service. The food took almost an hour and when it arrived everything was cold. The hapless waiter then took all the dishes back one by one and re-heated them. The meal was a disjointed mess and I received absolutely no apology despite my annoyance. I even e-mailed their website to complain and received no response. The food was at best "okay" and certainly not worth enduring the above. Customers should go elsewhere, there are plenty of better options.

Went last week to Chinese Mirch, and I must say, they were so truly attentive, I thought I was in a very swanky restaurant. The service was great! We were seated promptly, and placed our order. We saw a window table free up, and asked if we could move (it was a little cramped where we were sitting), and they complied no problem. During the entire course of the meal, our waiter repeatedly asked us if we needed anything else. To top that off, he reccommended a main course for my husband, and actually stood there with a knowing smile when the food came out to see his reaction. It was excellent!
All the food was oh so good! The Chinese Mirch appetizer was my favorite. Everything, though, had the perfect blend of spice that was hot enough to satisfy, but not overwhelming enough to make the taste of the food itself disappear. The only disappointment was the corn fritters - a bit dull compared to other places I've tried.
Excellent.

Unfortunately I have to rate this place low because halfway through my meal, right before I was about to take a bite of my chili chicken, I found A SCREW in my chicken! YES AN ACTUAL SCREW! After immediately reporting it to the server and the manager I got NOTHING close to an apology and furthermore they actually tried to suggest I somehow placed it there. It is UNACCEPTABLE that they would react this way and it is indicative of the absolutely terrible customer service they have. It is such a shame too because the food is quite good, but I will say that there are other places in manhattan that serve this type of cuisine, try those! The other reviews may not report screws in the food but they seem to highlight the same issues in terms of lack of customer service. overall I would NOT reccomend the place since the you dont know what you might get in your food.

One of my Indian friends recommended this restuarant to me. However, I never actually had a chance to try the food here. I was so turned off by the costumer service that I will NEVER go back. It was a Saturday night so the restaurant was quite busy (not unusual). We were told that the wait would be about 45 minutes for a party of two. There were other people waiting so that was fine. After about 10 minutes some of the other parties waiting were seated, a couple which had to inquire again about being seated since they had already been waiting the estimated 45min. Five minutes later a party of four came in asking about the wait, they were Indian, stating "we just came from India". They were seated within 5min of arriving. We of course left after we realized what was going on. We are not Indian and those that had been waiting a while were noticibly non-Indian as well. Though it seems it happens everyday, I personally can't put up with discriminatory practices like that. If you are not Indian, consider yourself warned.

Unfortunately starting today I will no longer patronize this restaurant. Although the food is delicious, I cannot get past the poor customer service. I have noticed bias behavior by staff members on several occasions, particularly today when I was asked to move after I placed an order to accommodate a larger group. It would have been understandable had there not been availability anywhere else in the restaurant! To add insult to injury the same group as well as another party that arrived well after was served first. By the time we got appetizers they were being served the main course. I really enjoyed the food but I value customer service first and foremost.

We called the restaurant and were told not to reserve. When we arrived, the host assured us that we would only wait 10 minutes. More than 40 minutes later, and after having watched people who arrived after us be seated, we fnally got a table.

The kitchen was closing for the afternoon by the time we ordered, so we did not taste the desserts. The appetizers (fried okra with chili powder and a sauteed cauliflower with onion and spices) were tasty. The main course (chicken Manchurian and Manchurian noodles) were very spicy, but once we overcame the spice, actually quite tasty. The food reminded both of us of Chinese food we ate in India, but with a bit more uuumph.

Given the service, however, we will not return.

I have no idea where the prior reviewer "archiiguy" went to eat, but he definitely was not describing Chinese Mirch. The thing that our party kept commenting on was how nice and attentive the staff was. They were constantly coming to fill up our waters and ask us if we needed anything. The attentive service was an added bonus because the food tastes amazing. We ordered 6 dishes family style and there was not a single dish that we didn't love, vegetarian or non vegetarian. The Chili Chicken and Manchurian Chicken were delicious and had the perfect amount of spiciness. The Gobi (Cauliflower) Manchurian appetizer is crispy and seasoned to perfection. This restaurant is so good that we went back the next day.

I think more than the quality of the food, this restaurant needs to work on the attitude of its staff. The host and his crew were horribly rude and non courteous. We were told to wait for 20 minutes but after waiting for more than 30 minutes( during the severe heat wave i might add) and seeing other people come after us get seated i decided to inquire about the status of our order. Was only the host not polite he was just abruptly rude. he said that we have to wait another 20 minutes as the table is not ready yet. Im not sure how good the food is, but am sure its not worth waiting one hour for in the presence of an absolutely obnoxious host staff.

Maybe I just caught them on a bad day or something, but I;m definately never going to that place again.

Its hard to find an authentic Indian restaurant with perfect chinese blend... but I cant have enough of this place. I love the chilli paneer and chilli chicken.... the could work on the wine list though.. also could use a new refrig for the beers to keep colder.. ??

The taste is somewhere between Beijing and Mumbai with Chinese and Indian flavorings marrying harmoniously in every dish. The desserts, like the sweet wontons, are worth a try.
