We had so many great meals in Ireland and have been so disappointed by many supposedly Irish restaurants in Philly. (Chicken parmesan, cheesesteaks, where's the Irish food on these menus?) But Tir Na Nog is the closest we've gotten so far. The cottage pie and shepherd's pie are as good as what we had in Dublin. The atmosphere is terrific, too. Great place to have a Guinness with friends and relax. Suggestion for the Tir Na Nog chef: Put some boxy on your menu. Not one single Irish restaurant in Philly has good boxty (crepe-like dishes with savory fillings). You're missing a great chance to shine even more!

Pros: food; atmosphere

Cons: needs more Irish delicacies on the menu

First real date in months, close to museums and city hall-downtown area. I think this place is great for the 20-50 yr old groups. Hip.

Pros: Service, quality and atmosphere

Cons: parking, drink consistency

Fun atmosphere but can be noisy. My native Dubliner husband likes their pints and the shepherd's pie is excellent and can feed two. Good for large groups if you don't mind a pub/bar atmosphere. A little on the pricey side for the food, but big portions.

This is a basic Irish pub. It is centrally located in the business district of Philadelphia. The food is ok. I like to sit out in the rotunda area, which is slightly less noisy and a nicer environment.

Tir Na Nog is a special spot for me, since it basically convinced me to want to move to Philadelphia. Strong praise, but I have good reasoning.
First, Tir Na Nog has pretty awesome decor, most of it imported from Ireland. It's quite impressive overall, very warm and somewhat dark. It's a large place with 2 large bars, outdoor seating, and more indoor seat/booths. Personally, I'm a sit-at-the-bar guy. A brief warning -- the place gets quite busy on friday/saturday nights.
Second, Tir is located in the Phoenix building, an upscale high-rise, and it seems a lot of the residents use it as their de-facto living room, especially on off nights (thursday, sunday). This results is a very friendly atmosphere, as there are plenty of regulars just relaxing at the bar. Likewise, the staff was very attentive and friendly, ready to offer advice about food or drinks or the city. It's this atmosphere, friendly, inviting, that made me realize what a great city Philly was. In fact, while visiting the bar a few times while in Philly for a conference I was adopted as a regular.
However, man cannot live on atmosphere alone and Tir doesn't disappoint in the food and drink department either. In fact, the food is probably some of the best food I've ever had at a bar -- the shepards pie is fantastic. Likewise, their liquor and beer selection is impressive, particularly if you like upscale liquors like whiskeys, portos, etc. Please note that with the upscale setting come upscale prices: most appetizers started near $10 and entreess were more in the $15-20+.

My colleagues and I practically lived at Tir NA Nog after 5PM - friendly bartenders, tasty snacks. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, friendly and inviting. They specialize in updated Irish fare and a great selection of draft beers. Pricing is completely fair for what you get!

I was shocked to see the good reviews from citysearch.
We've eaten there about 4 or 5 times, and I'm not sure why I kept giving them another chance. No more.

We've only dined there OUTSIDE, so maybe the service indoors is more attentive. Outside, it simply could not be worse. The waiter kept abandoning us, and we really needed him because my wife's salad was sandy (arugula often is unless it's washed thoroughly). When I went inside to track the waiter down, he was chatting up a girl who worked there by the front door.

On another occasion, I saw a guy at another table sarcastically telling the waiter, "Poor guy, you have to come out here and serve us in the heat." Translation: where have you been?

The food is ok (other than the sandy salad which was STILL sandy when it came back, by the way), but forget about service if you're seated outside.

My favorite stop any day of the week. You WILL NOT find better service elsewhere in this city. The staff is attentive and prompt. I never have to ask twice for anything here. The food is exceptional and the atmosphere is electric. The location is choice for the quick and needie before you have to hit the train home at Suburban Station. Why go anywhere else?

This is one of my favorites in the city. Traditional Irish Pub fare, always fresh and well presented. I have never been disappointed with any choice.

I went to Tir Na Nog last week to grab some food and drinks with a friend for her birthday. A couple of days later I realized that I could not find my credit card and that I could have left it there. I was obviously panicked and I just wanted to confirm that it was there so I would not have to cancel it. I called Tir Na Nog and told the girl who answered the phone what happened (who couldn't sympathize?). She told me, "Actually, we are really busy right now. Can you call back tomorrow-day..." and hung up. How is that for service?

Been here for a couple of happy hours. Great, older crowd. Age range is from upper 20's to upper 30's. Didn't notice any "happy hour" drink specials though
