i have been a loyal customer of david ryan for 8 years now for the simple reason that it is best salon in the city. maria is amazing. she is truly gifted at mixing natural looking color. under her care, i have been various shades of blonde (my natural color, enhanced w/ her high / low lights) as well as what could pass as natural red head. her cuts are phenomenal, and grow out beautifully. when i go to see her, i know i can sit down relax and let her do what she wants -- the end result will always be perfect.

reasonable prices, excellent service, and beautiful hair -- everything you want in a salon!

This is a great neighborhood salon. It's cozy inside, and they will fix you tea or water. Everyone there knows me and takes good care of me, remembering my name, and what gel I have special ordered for me, etc..

The best part of the experience is having Kiki cut your hair. He does a great job, and is absolutely meticulous. He always make sure I love my cut 100%, and NEVER rushes me.

Beyond the great haircut, he is a truly warm and genuine person. We have a great time dishing, and talking about our lives. You will love hanging out with him, and getting thoroughly spoiled!

I had been getting highlights at various salons and was never quite satisified with how they came out. I found out that this salon had stylists who did the balayage highlighting technique and I LOVE how my hair came out. Joey was the stylist and he was a doll. He was super friendly and made me feel comfortable from the second I met him. I haven't had anything else done there yet, but I would highly recommend going here if you are looking for natural looking highlights.

I've been seeing Martin at David Ryan since August. He has totally transformed my hair from bland and boring to cutting edge and noticable. People actually comment on how great my hair looks. In the six month time frame he let my hair grow out in all the right places while still maintaining shape and style. Martin knows exactly what he's doing and is will make valuable suggestions if you are unsure. He also has done fashion week and has celebrity clients.

I had an appointment for a haircut. I had to be at work 3 hours from my scheduled appointment time and work a 5 minute walk from the salon, so I figured, no problem. This was not a complicated haircut. Just a few inches off the bottom and a couple pieces around the face. They told me that the person cutting my hair was running a little late. I said no problem and grabbed a magazine. 2 1/2 hours later (having been ignored) I asked if I was next. The receptionist said, "ah, she won't be able to see you today."...and then grabbed the phone and made a call!!! That's it! NOTHING ELSE! Zero!! End of conversation!!! Truly truly unreal. If anyone steps into a place that would do that to a customer, you're an idiot. Good luck with your next appointment!
The one rating is only because you have to choose something or it would obvioulsy be zero.

This review is prompted by several factors:

a) David Ryan salon is totally super-fun.
b) Yelena and her magical colorizing.
c) How David Ryan may just be my Happy Place.

And, to further explain:

a) It's unpretentious, yet hip. It's inviting. Everyone is genuinely nice; when they ask if I want tea, I truly think they're asking because I just may want tea, not because they have to. And -- Big Time Points Here -- the staff is pretty chill. No one is falling over themselves to feign niceties, but their good nature feels unforced. They're real, and sometimes they call me 'Baby,' which I (shouldn't, but) sorta love.

b) Alright. Here we go. Yelena got a downright nasty review a few weeks ago and I am here to tell you that it's the REVIEWER that has a problem.

I first went to Yelena a few years ago when my hair was growing out of a poorly done bob and it was about 17 different shades of red, complete with mousy brown roots. She mixes a color for me that people LITERALLY stop me on the street to ask where I've gotten my hair done. Yelena coaxed my hair out of a bob for a year. Here note-card system is impeccable -- she keeps track of sessions and always knows exactly what we did last time.

And her attitude? Yelena clearly values what she's doing and values the salon with the care she takes in coloring and cutting hair. I have asked her questions and she gives me honest answers. Plus, she doesn't have an endless stream of chatter. She's CONCENTRATING. The first haircut I had with her -- after The Bob incident -- she was efficient, but spent a lot of time making sure my hair was even (i.e. fixing what the girl who worked at a place that rhymes with Wedall Lassoon did). After she sat with me for ten minutes and we talked about what I'd put my hair through, she stood behind me, combing it out and thinking. I mean, Yelena was actually thinking about how best to fix this mess. Then she asked me what I was thinking - and she gave me her honest opinion. And then she fixed it. And I stopped hating my hair.

Also to note, I like to change my hair a lot. Bangs, cut, color, whatever. I get bored. She listens, we decide, and she thoughtfully executes. During less intense moments, we talk about our dogs, the salon, hair coloring philosophies. I just like her.

c) It's my Happy Place because when I walk in, I feel a little dowdy then I am offered tea, I read Vogue, Yelena fancifies my hair, I walk out and BOOM. Someone stops me on the street to ask where I got my hair done.

Go here. They rock.

I moved out of Hell's Kitchen two years ago but the trip back is oh-so worth it to see my favorite stylist. David Ryan is a true, upscale salon but hasn't lost it's neighborhood appeal. Often, the owner works reception - offering sparkling water, homemade biscotti and always remembers my name.

I go for highlights, low lights, cut and blowout - which remains amazingly affordable time after time. My stylist always takes time to sit down with me and consult on colors and cut. I love this place!

I've been going to DRS since it was a 4 chair salon and still find the same genuinely proficient staff and management. I tried the pricey uptown salons when I first came to NY, which were often arrogant. My hair is long and has never looked better since going to this salon. People are always commenting on it and I have to give the David Ryan Salon the credit. Yelena has been my stylist for years and before that, Maria, both are terrific. In fact, you see some great looking cuts and colour from all the stylists. The ambience is the best - everyone is genuine and friendly and the owners, Maria and Bippo, make everyone feel at home. Local artists' works are showcased on the brick walls and the prices are very reasonable. We, artists, love the place but so do a lot of business professionals and neighborhood folk. It truly is one of the best salons in the City! -Arista

I went to David Ryan Salon for 3 years with the same stylist, Kim, after she was reccommended to me by a friend. I LOVE her, recently she left, so because she's been my stylist for such a long time I left with her. David Ryan is a nice salon, but my best advice would be to go there for a specific stylist that someone reccommends to you or you know. There are a lot of stylists there, some great, some really not good at all. I would NEVER walk in there because the not so great ones don't have a huge client base so are usually the only ones open for walk-ins. Also, because the salon takes such a big chunk of what the stylists make, the prices can be somewhat high, not necessarily on cuts, but colors (even single process) are pretty crazy. All in all, good salon, but definately know who you're going to.

Go to David Ryan if you know your stylist. I was a first and last time client. I am sure they have many. My stylist Yelena was eager to get me out the second I sat in her chair. She did not offer any suggestions until I probed her for her opinion and only spoke to push the product sold at the salon. She did offer me water after she stopped to have some herself. I usually enjoy the salon and the chatting and wonderful way you feel when you leave. This was the most boring salon experience performed by someone who obviously does not take care and consideration into every client and is not interested in building her clientele. This level of unprofessionalism reflects on the salon as a whole and I am sorry to say I will not be returning to take a chance on another presumably mediocre stylist.

In short, I read the reviews and thought "wow, I should check it you" Made an appointment for 12/26 with Yvonne at 11am. FYI: I'm not a morning person. So the day came, I got up early. My bestfriend came down from Connecticut to keep me company... got there .. and guess what.. She called out sick. They didn't offer anything, not even a discount, nothing. I was disappointed.

I've been to several salons in my 7 years in New York, and David Ryan is far and away the best. As previous reviewers have noted, it's not the cheapest, but the quality and consistency of service is second to none. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for excellent cuts and color at a decent (for NYC) price.
Here are the reasons why:
1). No Pretentious atmosphere - Unlike the other salons I used to go to, David Ryan is relaxed and not snobby in the least bit. I can walk in wearing track pants and a t-shirt and feel welcomed and special. One salon I used to go to had a euro-trash snobby manager that would prance around, sniff and micro-manage the stylists....it created a tense, cold environment. There's none of that nonsense at David Ryan.
2). Superior Stylists - Veronica has been doing my cut and highlights for a year and a half and is the best hair stylist I've ever encountered. She has a fantastic eye and will make you look fabulous. No one else has ever given me a more natural, healthy looking blond than Veronica. I've been to stylists charging twice as much and no one has come close to doing color as well.
3). Prices that don't keep going up - The last salon I went to kept charging me more and more every visit. They would do an extra treatment without telling me that it would cost extra (like a $50 special color conditioner) and then I'd be shocked when seeing the bill. They'd also constantly be pushing me to buy their overpriced products. My bill has always been the same at David Ryan, and they've NEVER tried to sell me something unless I specifically asked for a product.

Pros: Best Color Ever from ANY salon

Cons: Not cheap, Must book at least a couple weeks in advance for favorite stylist

.

After consulting me about what I would like to have done, the stylist completely disregarded everything I said and cut my hair much shorter than I requested and with horrible uneven layers. I have very straight hair and the layers looked so terrible that I had to wear my hair pulled back every day. It took about 3 to 4 months for me to even be able to wear my hear down again. The next time I went to get my hair cut the stylist could not believe how choppy and uneven my hair was. I would not trust David Ryan Salon.

I recently visited David Ryan salon for last minute highlights. They got me in within the hour and I saw Veronica who was very cool and professional. She listened to what I wanted and got right to work. The prices, while not cheap, are still affordable for Manhattan and I look forward to trying out out the salon for a cut.

I've worked in NYC for two years and finally found David Ryan on CS. I liked what I saw (even if their website is down!) and booked an appt. As soon as you walk in the vibe is awesome. It's not pretencious like other "high end" spot, and the price is great!. They have great stylist, a cool guy at the front desk that welcomes you and sets up your next visit (if wanted) before you leave. OH....the haircut! It was one of the best I've ever had. I can be a difficult cut b/c I have a bald spot on the side of my head that makes the cut harder to nail....this was no problem and I looked great! All in all, I really enjoyed this place and will def. go back

I have been a customer with David Ryan Salon since I was 22 years old and I am now 32. David Ryan was the first place I went too when I needed to have that first highlight experience. It was days before my graduation and I was nervous I wanted a new look before I went out into the real world. At the time Desman was my hair stylist and his wife who worked for Supercuts did my makeup and for the first time I could say how beautiful I truly looked. In fact, with my new look I met my husband to be that same year and we have a little girl 15months and been happily married 5 years. Since Desman has left, Maria has been my stylist and I can't say enough about how much I love her and Pippo and what a pleasure it is to go into a family environment and see my friends at David Ryan.

this is by far the best salon i've ever gone to!!!....i mean, about how many salons can you say every time you go in "this is the best hair cut i've ever gotten!"?....it's like every single time they outdo themselves!....finding a great salon is like finding a great mechanic or a great doctor, you're willing to travel any distance (even after you move) just to continue being their client...i highly recommend this salon, especially for anyone who is a haircut-phobic (most likely because of a bad haircut...or multiple bad haircuts)....

I've been going to David Ryan Salon everytime I go to New York which has been three summers in a row. I've had Robb everytime he is amazing! I never tell him what I want and I always have him do his own thing and everytime I completely love my results. I recommend him and I can't wait to go back. Ask for him! He knows what he's doing!

I have been a faithful client of Terese for about two years now and I can honestly say, "I don't know what I would do without her!" She is everything a person could ever want from a stylist and colorist. Regarding her hair cutting skills, she is second to none. I am a male with medium to short hair (depending on the season and my whims) and she just knows exactly what to do with my hair type (which can get quite thick on the sides and back). I am so happy with how she layers and minimizes the bulkiness...much better than any stylist I have EVER been to. I also have her do my color and/or highlights (again depending on the season and my moods) and she always gives me such natural looking color. This is not an easy task given that my natural hair color is a fairly dark brown and I prefer being blonde! She never has my hair looking brassy or fake and always gives me a natural looking blonde. I would highly recommend Terese to anyone who wants to get a quality cut and/or color and I hope to be a client of hers for many more years to come!

I went here first last summer to get an airbrush tan (amazing also!) and had some time to spare before my appt. Kim was available and turned out to be one of my favorite stylists of ALL times. She's one of two people that I completely trust to do her thing. I give her a general idea of what I want or don't want and she does a great job every single time. I just recently did a drastic change to my hair and I've had people literally stop me on the street to ask me about it. I've referred a friend there who adores Kim also and have a feeling more will be going after the last creation she did!
The atmosphere is great there, everyone is super friendly and "hip" ;) while making even the most unhip (yours truly) feel completely at ease. I can't say enough about Natalie who does the best airbrush tan or the people who answer the phones. Kiki just did my eyebrows and a perfect job at that. He's one of the few people who've understood that my eyebrows are not symmetrical and I actually LIKE that. Perfectly painless and not a strand overdone. From someone who has had more than her fair share of bad cuts (i have short, layered hair and anyone with that kind will tell you that 1/2 inch in the wrong place will RUIN the cut), I can't see myself going anywhere else.

We stumbled into this theater district salon one day when we were having a hair emergency. The heavens were smiling on us because Yelena had an opening. We will never go anywhere ever again. The salon itself can be busy and chatty but Yelena just gets to work and does her thing on your hair -- we have sent at least half a dozen people there without reservation and each one has come away intensely happy. She's also a talented colorist: this is NOT an admission that we get our hair colored. Well, let's put it this way, you would never know.

Clearly, her talents are widely known about the theater community. On any given day, you'll be seated just before or after a major Broadway star in Yelena's chair. She's always ON TIME too. We love that since we're both really busy and hate salons that always run late.

No gossip, no salon blahblah, no political clap-trap, no psychobabble -- Yelena is about delivering perfect haircuts at really reasonable prices.

We hate writing this, because we don't want her to get busier than she already is.

I?m writing to tell the world about Kim at David Ryan Salon. Moving to NYC from Miami I had left behind a great friend and stylist. I went thru many, many stylists looking for someone who understands color. I had many regrettable experiences and then I found Kim who took my fine out of control brown hair and over the last three years has given me every look I?ve envisioned. As a performer I love to look the part as well. Kim has cut and colored my hair with amazingly diverse results. I thought I was doomed to my fine brown hair but a true talent like Kim can really make magic. She?s got a fun attitude and everyone in the salon makes the atmosphere like a party. David Ryan is a find in Hell?s Kitchen.

I love this salon and am really sorry that the person who gave it a lousy review had a bad experience. Everyone is so friendly, and the stylists are very talented. Frank is absolutely the best stylist I have ever worked with, and I've been everywhere. The hours are flexible and the atmosphere is so mellow and chill.

If you don't have a salon or don't like your current one, go to this one. Just don't take my appointment time.

My stylist was Kim, I got a haircut and blowdry, and to be honest with you I would have rather paid $100000 for a haircut at Supercuts than have paid $1 for a haircut at David Ryan. I am originally from Southern California, and exclusively got my haircut there. I moved here a couple months ago and David Ryan looked like a nice spot. Now, I know why all New York girls are ugly- the hairdressers here are absolutely awful. Kim tried to go for a "trendy" cut and failed to remember that hair is actually connected to a person and she made the most unflattering, masculine, god-awful cut I have ever seen. I will never get my haircut in NYC again, I will only fly home to California where stylists there actually know something. It seems that stylists here are more concerned with the cut than with how it actually looks on you. Avoid David Ryan Salon at all costs, particularly Kim.

I drive from Boston to see Rob for my highlights. He listens to what I want and tells me whether it will work or not. He does a fantastic job. People ask me all the time where I get my hair done. I love it! I can't wait for my next appointment!

I wanted to write in because there are some extreme reviews on here, claiming that the place is bad, and it definitely is not. Some people are never happy I guess. I've been to many places in NYC over the years, and this place was like a breath of fresh air. They were unpretentious and very accommodating. I can only speak for my hairdresser (Robert), but it appears that the staff is very talented.
I live in the area and had passed David Ryan a few times thinking it looked like a cool place. I went in this past Saturday just for a haircut, and felt so comfortable with Robert that I let him talk me into highlights! He did an awesome job, especially with the cut. He did what I asked for, but better!
Overall, I was very happy with David Ryan salon, and I will definitely go back.

I don't know where Citysearch gets its ratings, but I had high hopes about this neighbourhood salon that were dashed after actually experiencing it. I loved my stylist's hair cut & color (usually a good sign) and was told that she was their "expert" in short hair cuts for women. Imagine my disappointment when she gave me a dated (and not in the cool retro way), too-short, shag that was terribly uneven. I pointed out how obviously uneven it was while still in the chair, but she was unable to fix it even after several tries (and by then, my hair was getting dangerously close to a buzz cut, so I asked her to stop). The atmosphere was okay and I could have swallowed the somewhat steep prices ($60-$100 for a trim?) if the cut had been any good, but I've had better 'dos from cheap chop-shops.

Only go here if you want to spend about 4 hrs waiting to finish while they squeeze in other peope and have very low expectations. They take pleasure in lopping your hair off and giving you a different color than you ask for. They claim to have lots of experience (ie BRoadway, years at expensive salons) but they probably would up here because they were fired at their old jobs. I decided to give them a second chance because they were so conveniently located for me and they blew it both times. The second time around the stylist said that my skin tone was "sallow", great salesmanship. When I went to pay the $217 they billed me for a trim and half highlights one of the sweepers was like "whoa" in response to the cost so the cashier told him to shut up.

Bottom line - do not go here.

Couple of week ago my sister went over to David Ryan Salon. All of the sudden I had my sister crying on her cell phone telling me how rude the staff was to her, from the moment she walked in to the moment she had a shampoo and to top it all the stylist destroyed her beautiful long hair. All she wanted was a trim, but the stylist refused to listen and her overall experience was ruined along with her hair.
Based on how my sister looked when I went over to the salon and to pick her up the had the nerve to charge her.
I strongly recomend to people in the city and Hell's Kitchen not to go to David Ryan Salon, I know we wont since there are better options and better stylists blocks away.

The David Ryan salon is one of the best finds in all of Manhattan. I have never once walked into the salon without getting a warm welcome. Everyone seems happy to be there and super friendly. Not something that you get in many Manhattan salons that have such excellent stylists.
I have been a client of Kiki for just over four years and I have to say that I have never found a stylist that is more reliable, understanding and exceptional. I go into the salon with absolutely no ideas in mind and literally tell Kiki to do whatever he wants. I am ALWAYS thrilled with the results. He will never let you down. If you want a cut that will not compliment you, he won't cut it. (that's just saving you the torment of being unhappy) I can NOT recommend him enough!
