If you find yourself in the Flatiron area, be sure to try Sala 19. The happy hour is great, all of the tapas we tried were yummy and the space is very cool!

Sala is really one of the best hide-away bars in the city. Located on a sleepy street in flatiron (sister location is down on bowery), this small and intimate bar features a terrific happy hour (2-for-1) and great spanish wines. I have yet to try a tapa I didn't love.

Food was great! Fried Goat Cheese was A+ along with the garlic shrimp.Red Sangria was very delicious. Loved the ambiance of the restaurant. A lot of group dinners were happening mixed with a few couples. Downstairs bar area very nice, but not a lot of people for a Friday night. Service was okay, a little disappointed by the unfriendly wait staff, host was very nice (he might have been the manager though).

This was one of those evening that I have wanted to write about everyday, but felt the need to make it so detailed and so descriptive that I have not gotten to it yet.\r
\r
It was honestly one of the top 10 dining experiences I have had in NY. The food, the service, the wine. It was all perfect. I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

Felt the need to send another positive review since someone panned it so bad. Ate here last Thursday and thought it was fabulous! Had the white sangria- YUM! First sangria I have ever had in a restaurant that didn't taste like a pitcher of fruit juice. It actually tasted like SANGRIA! And maybe the previous reviewer had a bad batch, because the goat cheese apps were terrific when we had them! Same goes for the bacon wrapped dates, and the soup of the day- an amazing white gazpacho with almonds. They were super busy and needed to ask for our table after we finished dining, but the hostess felt so bad to move us that she bought us another pitcher! I highly recommend this place and will certainly return myself...

A few girlfriends and I went to Sala One Nine last thursday night, unfortunately we didnt have a reservation and weren't able to get a table, but the host was really nice and made space for us at the bar so we could order food and hang out. It turned out GREAT! The bartender was from Spain so she guided us through the menu and wine list. She was very friendly, (a little slow, but i guess that's what happens when you are attentive to your customers?...) The sangria was really good too and for our group we got 2 pitchers for the price of one because we showed up before happy hour was over! Definately reccommend this place, but try to make a reservation if you are a larger group and want to sit. OR just show up and hang out at the bar!

Expensive prices. Cheap cheesy, lazy food. Our $9 wine tasted like Carlo Rossi, the goat cheese app like the fryer it was made in, our mussels were raw and the molten chocolate cake was the worst I've had! Stay away!! Never felt the need to pan a restaurant before!

Service was horrible! The menu selection and happy hour is no where near as good as Sala's on Bowery. i will not be going back to Sala on One Nine again. For a more low key experince with great Sangrias, tapas, and good service, check out Sala on Bowery. I only would recommend Sala One Nine if you prefer a crowded scene with rude service and sucky happy hour.\r

My girlfriends and I came here on a Thursday night in May. We had early reservation for 5 people (at 5:30). They seated us right away and gave us yummy drinks. Both the margarita and sangria were great! To start, we all had the special arugula salad with aged goat cheese. It was delicious! Then, we each picked a racion and we shared them all. We had the garlic shrimp, the tortilla, fried goat cheese with honey and carmalized onions, and the tosta with baked brie. All of them were excellent! We especially LOVED the fried goat cheese and we ended up ordering another round of that along with the potatoes with spicy sauce. yum! for dessert, we had one apple tart and one chocolate souffle. both were awesome but the chocolate was to die for. \r
\r
We got there so early that it was almost empty when we sat down. We were having such a good time that we didn't notice it got really crowded. No one rushed us through the whole meal and we took our time. After all the plate cleared, we got a few glares from the waitress because people were waiting, but it didn't change our minds. We all loved it there. Great music, low enough to have a conversation. Great vibe. Friendly waitress (she was so passionate about the food!). It was such a good time and I will definitely go back!

My girlfriend and I decided to go to Sala One Nine on a Friday night around 7pm for the first time. Sala had a very warm feeling to it, but was really crowded., with the after work crowd, and a mixture of others. We forgot to make reservations, and ended up waiting at the front bar, which was way to crowded and small to keep people waiting for about an hour. But its expected.. no biggy because I was dying to taste their food. Well,,,Just before we came up with the idea to call the Bowery location to make a reservation so we can finally eat, we were seated. The selections were great, there was plenty tapas/entrees to choose from, we had the Paella, which was really tasty, we also had the coquetas hamon it was just delightful. The grilled calamari wasnt the best. I must say I felt the man at the bar, who could possible be the owner/host was a little preoccupied, we asked for a recommendation of what was good on the menu, and he had no suggestions. You would think he would have some feedback. He seemed like he was juggling 4 jobs at one time. As soon as we finished our delicious desert our check was placed on the table. I will go back there again, but I will make sure to have reservations first, and possible come at an earlier time in the day, so I dont feel rushed, I can only image how this place is on the weekend. This is not to discourage anyone, its just not a good feeling when you want to sit and relax after a long work week, to feel rushed to leave. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Pros: Food, atmosphere, music

Cons: Service could be better, too crowded, tables veryyyyyy close together

.

My friend and I really enjoyed the grilled shrimp with sliced almonds and scallions as well as the croquettes with serrano ham. The sangria was great. We went on a Friday night at around 7pm. It quickly grew too crowded for my comfort and the busboy put a ""reserved"" card on our table to give as the hint to finish up quickly. Overall I would recommend it though.

We had our office party here and it was a great pick. THe food was really good and they kept the drinks always full. The service was wonderful and they were so pleasant. Not the best tapas in town, but if you want a good yummy place for groups, definitely try Sala 19.

Place: good atmosphere: shadow cast tables, two bars, awkward winterized entrance, mid-block Flatiron location; no coat check. Food: Average. Nothing particularly notable in any selection even the fish special. Suffice it to say, it?s not bad... but just not good. All of us said: ""ok"". \r
\r
Service: very mixed bag. At the bar is fantastic and very welcoming.; never felt rushed or ignored. However, table service was, frankly, terrible on both occasions. It seems Sala likes to hire presumably cheap bus labor providing very awkwardly busing service while the wait staff is therefore theoretically less burdened yet thet latter still remains inattentive and aloof. Our latest outing involved a perfect example: the overworked buser dumped dirty placeware, whilst cleaning, on the back of my friend in the tight dining area and didn't apologize (stunning); when the server was told, we received only a curt ""sorry"" followed, unfortunately, by a very long absent period. During both visits, we had to wait for the server to ask about more drinks and even an initial ""how's it going"" inquiry after the food arrived -- which was not asked in the last visit.\r
\r
Summary: If you go, expect reliable slightly above average food for the price; and definitely eat at the bar or go when the staff is less taxed -- they seem not to be the cream of the crop here and need to be unlittered by needy customers to really provide good service.

Cons: Table service, average food for the price, & oddly the number of birthday parties being held there

Sala One Nine isn't the most authentic Spanish cuisine you can find in the city but it's still good and the atmosphere is as alluring as the food. It's very lively and young. The value is OK. It's not inexpensive but average. Drinks are strong and a good size and they have a good group rate for b-day's and special occasions. $55.00 for 3 courses and 2 hours of all-you-can-drink Sangria, Beer and Wine.

I've been to this place several times and have always had a great experience here. As far as Tapas restaurants go, I haven't found one yet that bests this place. From the small sandwiches to the chorizo to the shrimp in garlic sauce, everything is what you'd expect from a true Spanish Tapas restaurant. Try to get here early to get a good table, or eat just as comfortably at the bar.\r
\r
In response to a recently posted-negative review, Sala is not a bar, if you're looking for happy hour, go next door to the Flatiron Lounge and spend a couple of bucks on a well-crafted cocktail, or if that's too high-brow, go to No Idea on 20th b/t Park and Broadway where you can swill $5 pints of Gin and Tonic.

My two friends and I were waiting at the bar for our table for a bit, and as a sort of apology, the bartender gave us a free round! We tried to give her a good tip as a thank you and she refused to take it! We snuck it in, but were definitely impressed w/ her thoughtful gesture. I would stick w/ the tapas here - entrees have never been memorable. Some favorites of mine include the Tortilla Espandla, Gambas Al Ajillo, Chorizo Frito, Croquetas De Jamon.

the food at sala one nine is the closes to ""authentic"" spanish i have had in iew york. the sangria is delicious and the portions are not skimpy at all. do not miss the grilled calimari or the chorizo. a reservation is recommended, and the bar can get very packed, making the whole restaurant a little loud. the staff is knowledgeable and very friendly.

So far, this is my favorite tapas place in the city! The dates are the best, as the friendly staff will always let you know. The Sangria is good, though nothing too special. I definitely recommend the fried apple dessert. I went one Saturday night with a group of 4 and without reservations, so there was a long wait, and the crowd at the bar was a little much, but no worries, you're right beside the Flatiron Lounge, one of the best cocktail places in the city. I went again last night (a Monday) and at around 9, the place was practically empty. The waitress was really sweet and the food was incredible. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone, and I'll be back for sure!

I have been looking for this restaurant for YEARS! Absolutely the most authentic spanish food in the city! The restaurant itself if gorgeous, beautiful art and design, my boyfriend and i loved the atmosphere. The tapas were wonderful as well, we had the grilled calamari and it was awesome! The Tostas are excellent too, the roasted pork loin with gruyere was unbelievable as were the duck and ham with brie. Be careful not to order too many though, save room for paella for sure. We had the seafood one, AMAZING. Make a reservation in advance, we didn't but the wait wasn't too bad at the bar. The sangria helped pass the time and the food was well worth the wait!!

Happy hour at Sala is great. Drinks are great at 2 or 1 but don't be fooled, you only get your second drink free meaning, two people have 4 drinks for the price of two. A better drinking bargain in Chelsea, the crowd is filled with some young professionals but, mostly casual, laid-back people coming in for happy hour. Tapas and food are a bit expensive for Happy Hour but, hey, if you're tipsy over the strong drinks, you have to eat sometime.

I have been to Sala a few times the food is average, the drinks are decent. However, here are the problems i had:
-EVERY TIME - we were not seated on-time (had to wait almost ONE hour)
-our waiter was nice but one of the hostesses/waitress was VERY, VERY RUDE. our table was overflowing of finished dishes and I had asked her politely if she can take a plate and she BARKED back -saying that its not her job/table .
Honeslty- I don't care if its not ur table . U work at the resturant=its ur job.

I tried to make a reservation at Sala One Nine for a group. The very friendly reservationist mistakenly thought that there was space open for us, and told me she'd call back to confirm. Instead, the owner called back. He accused me of lying to him when I said we had been told there was space open, and hung up on me!

The reservationist (who was never rude) called and apologized, but the owner (who was unbelievably rude) never did. I've heard that service is often surly at Sala One Nine and I'm not surprised, given the attitude of the management.

If you make a reservation, be sure you have a backup plan!

My boyfriend took me here for the Sunday night all you can drink sangria and paella. We had so much fun we are thinking about coming here every Sunday with a group. We ended up ordering extra tapas and dessert which were delicious but my favorite is their awesome sangria. Not watered down at all!! Great value.

I have been to numerous Spanish restaurants here in New York, and this one is truly the best. They have the original Sala restaurant on the Bowery where I have had dinner a few times, but now they just opened Sala one-nine, which is open for lunch and dinner.
I have already been there three times since they've opened, once for lunch where I had the most amazing spanish sandwich, and twice for dinner with a group of friends. One of the nights was on a Saturday, and they were very busy, so I would recommend making reservations. The decor is dark and sexy and the food is simply amazing!

I did taste one appetizer which was quite good... However, the restaurant lost our reservation and although it was early and the place was still fairly empy, the host was extremely rude & obnoxious about the terms under which he would accomodate our party. Only once we decided to leave did he lose the arrogant NY attitude. No thanks buddy. Beware of this place on a Saturday night. They think they're hot and seem one step away from putting out a velvet rope. Get over yourself Sala One Nine. I don't need the attitude with so many other fish in the sea.

I used to live in the east village and frequented the original Sala for tapas and sangria. Sala 19 is near my current job and I am impressed. During the day I can get a quick sandwich, soup or salad. The front window is a choice seat if I have the time to sit. At dinner I went with my boyfriend. We sat at the bar and enjoyed more small plates and yes, the sangria. The attitude is always friendly if maybe a little more posh at night, but that's to be expected. The vibe is romantic and old world without feeling stuffy. Food, service and decor have made this another favorite for tapas.

Brought a group of 11 for a friends Birthday on 2/19/05. Service was excellent. The tapas was amazing, especially the Portobello mushrooms and it may have been the best Mussels I've ever had. I don't really drink but my friends enjoyed the Sangria and we all had a good time.
