I have been to Yoga Effects in the past and found my experience rather normal. I practice yoga frequently and at studios across the city. For my birthday a friend gave me the "Yoga Pass Book", which provides you Guest Passes to various studios around NYC. Last night I brought two friends with me who never did Yoga to this studio. I accidentally forgot my Yoga Pass Book and tried to ask the woman at the front desk if I could pay now and come back the next day with my pass for a refund. The woman said "no" to my request. It was not her response to my request but rather how curt she was about it that surprised me and I figured she could not be the manager or owner as I would assume no owner of any establishment would treat their customers in such a way and figured I'd come back the next day and hope to catch the owner instead. To my surprise today, the same woman was there (the night before she told me she wouldn't be in on Wednesday) and it turns out she is the owner. I politely reiterated my request and she, once again, rudely turned it down. I tried to explain that I respect her studio's policies but was curious as to her rationale of her policy. To my surprise, again, she refused to explain herself. She would only say over and over "I said no and I'm not explaining myself." I don't mind a request being turned down, but what really upsets and disappoints me is that the OWNER of a YOGA studio would be so harsh over something so minor. Why not provide your explanation and, even further, why not just be polite? Do you not want people to come back? And isn't Yoga about being positive? I'm shocked at her behavior and handling of this minor situation and will never go back because that kind of negative energy when practicing Yoga is not good to be around. My teacher was great, and I wish she taught somewhere else. Please think twice before going here if you want good customer service and positive energy when practicing.

Finally a place where people are nice and normal and the staff is attentive! I've gone to level 2 and 3 classes here (they have 5 levels) and it was amazing. Super challenging, relatively small class size and hands on interaction. They take requests also. The students were friendlly to each other- people will actually smile at you.

Great work out, normal and friendly teachers. Clean place with showers. They have five levels, so you can really find a class that's suitable for your experience. However, it's not for the faint of heart- this place is athletic!

I didn't think I'd find good yoga in Midtown East. But when I was looking for somewhere to practice bright and early before work, I came across Yoga Effects. When they say vigorous vinyasa, they mean it. It's a good thing they have showers because you'll need them. Don't expect to chant or meditate. But do expect really sweet teachers who kick your butt with a smile. I appreciate the fact that there are actual levels unlike other studios who just do the "open level" thing which can mean if you're advanced, you might not be challenged, if you're a beginner, you might be lost. At Yoga Effects, if you go to an advanced class, believe me, it's advanced, and if you go to a beginner class, even though you will sweat, you will do so safely. The studio is very spacious, spartan, and very clean. The owner is professional, yet warm. This yoga center was a pleasant surprise and going there for an early-bird or lunch-time class makes working on the east side of midtown so much more bearable!

This is not your typical yoga studio. Yoga Effects is amazing, friendly, and it makes you feel comfortable from the first class you take. It is a powerful vinyasa flow practice that is a great workout while still being fun and energetic. If you are new to yoga, or you don't like the "know-it-all" attitude of other studios, this would be a great change. I practiced here for two years before moving out of New York, and this studio made me love yoga. I HIGHLY recommend this place.

Liz, the owner and head instructor at the studio is fantastic. She teaches wonderful classes that push you to the limits, while still following and assisting each of the students in the room.

Yoga Effects has a great group of confidence-inspiring teachers that lead very well thought-out classes/routines that really educate and strengthen the students with careful, individual attention to newcomers and return students alike. It is really a breadth of fresh air in a community that oftentimes ignores newcomers to a studio.

Great studio and great job Liz!!!

I fell in love with yoga and vinyasa the day I walked into Yoga Effects over a year and a half ago. I have tried other studios and types of yoga but the combination of the friendly, encouraging atmosphere of this studio and the physical results I quickly saw had me addicted! Each instructor lends their own personal touch to each class and Liz, the owner is wonderful. Her love for yoga is obvious in and out of class. Yoga Effects has allowed me grow into an advanced practice because this studio offers something for every level.

Get ready for a great work out at Yoga Effects?

Friendly staff will welcome you as you walk in the door but do not be fooled once in class they will whip your butt into shape. I?m often asked how I get arms and a body like mine I just smile and say head over to 226 E 54th street and check out Yoga Effects. The best yoga studio in the NYC area and I?ve tried them all?..

Yoga Effects offers the best classes I have ever experienced. Elizabeth is my favorite instructor. Nice clean environment, friendly people and enjoyable classes that challenge me. I don't know what I'd do without my yoga classes, they calm me down after a stressful day, helped me quit smoking, stop taking anti-depressants and toned up my body.

I've been doing yoga for approx. 1 year. At first, I tried a lot of different places, but over the last 8 months, I have practiced almost exclusively at Yoga Effects. I found their beginner classes very challenging and their instructors very attentive, specifically Ellen and Corey. The style is rigorous vinyasa. For me this is beneficial because I don't have a lot of natural flexibility, and I need to get warm before doing much in the way of stretching. I hate going into a class cold, doing one sun salutation, and then trying to do triangle. At Yoga Effects my practice has progressed toward the intermediate-advanced range, and the classes continue to push me to in my strength and flexibility. Elizabeth's and Tyler's intermediate and advanced classes always have a very good flow, a very good level of difficulty, and they provide crucially beneficial adjustments. Yoga Effects is a great yoga studio. I highly recommend it.

This studio is great for anyone looking for a caring, laid-back place to further his/her yoga practice. The studio is clean with excellent equipment meticulously maintained. For me, the staff and other students make this an ideal and comfortable environment. If you're looking for a scene, this isn't the place for you. The staff is caring and take the time to learn your name, correct yoga positions and present challenging classes that actually incorporate students' input. Other students at the studio are friendly and non-judgmental. The classes are challenging without pushing a philosophy or way of life. Most of the emphasis is on health, taking care of yourself and making better choices in your chosen lifestyle. I have been practicing regularly for nine months here and felt at home from the moment I walked in the door. I have encouraged several friends and colleagues to try to studio for the convenient class times, reasonable prices and friendly, knowledgeable instructors. I highly encourage anyone to come to a class here.

The studio is quaint, clean, and peaceful. it has wooden floors and rooms to change in. they keep the bathrooms and equipment fairly clean.
I'm not too crazy about the class structure though. i've been doing yoga at many different places and i find their style/approach to be a bit "stiff." Meaning that I find that their isn't a "flow" to the postitions. it all really depends if you like their style. all the teachers i think came out of the same school, and i don't think they do a horrible job, but i don't think it's the best either. i've been to palces where the teachers were a lot more creative and challenging instead of doing the same old moves. i like yoga to make sense in a way that the posiitons should have a natural progression ..and i don't think they really do that...there isn't cerebral aspect to it. i find the teachers to do a lot of the same moves, and its a bit uncreative. i did work up a sweat but i just don't feel "challenged" that's all. it's probably good for adv beginners and the rooms could afford to be a little warmer....and better music

I first decided to check out yoga effects only because it was 1) near the office 2) I was running quite a bit and was feeling a bit tight overall and specifically my feet were killing me as they felt like 200 lbs bricks when I would walk. I started going 1-2 times a week; but then I became addicted. I read somewhere that when one craves yoga, it's because you did it in a past life. I'm not sure how much I buy into this, but yoga definently feels right to me. My body feels more energetic, light, open...oh I could go on and on...oh yes and I am more toned (as Liz the owner told me today)...hehehe. Anyway, this place is amazing, ALL the instructors are really warm, friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. They all have their own style and selection of music, but you can definently tell that all of them were trained thoroughly by Liz, and there is an underlying consistency in what is covered in each class. Each class is for a specific level, which I personally think is the best way to learn yoga. Some studios have 'open' classes where it's easy to feel intimidated, push yourself too much, or get discouraged by the human pretzel next to you. The beginer classes are great, and all the instructors will talk to you through all the poses. As you move up the levels, the commentary changes, with the instructors verbally/physically helping you understand the subtleties of the poses. The vibe is just overall chill, without the airs I've experienced by 'famous' instructors and their fancy incense sticks at other studios. Additionally, Liz is also a runner, and another instructor a rock climber, so they understand the ailments that affect students active in pursuits other than yoga. This place is really the best yoga joint in NYC.

Before July, I had never in my life set foot in a yoga studio. Now, thanks to Yoga Effects, I am a four-classes-per-week devotee. The beginner level classes were perfect for a novice like me. Challenging yet non-intimidating, they gave me a really strong foundation in the postures and an awareness of my body that has continued to serve me well in more advanced classes.

The atmosphere is warm and supportive, and the teachers are passionate about yoga and about helping students to grow and to move beyond their perceived limitations. The ?personal touch? really sets this studio apart. All of the teachers, including the owner, Liz, make a point of learning everyone?s name, and are really good at helping students to make individual adjustments (through verbal or physical instruction) throughout the class. They have an uncanny ability to remember each student?s habits/tics/preferences, and they really delight in enabling students to progress farther than they thought possible; they are also incredibly respectful of the fact that everyone moves at his/her own pace.

I feel really lucky to have found this place, and I can?t imagine my life without it!

I've tried yoga in a couple of places and became a skeptic instantaneously. Yoga Effects changed my mind! I'm no longer a skeptic and surprisingly I enjoy yoga more than any other "workout". In fact, I don't even think of it as a workout - it's just part of my weekly routine. Yoga Effects offers classes all day, all week, all levels. The studio is clean, the instructors AND clients are warm (and sane!!) and the prices are so reasonable. It is perfectly located in midtown East and easy to get to. If you're looking for a healthy, positive, exceptional yoga studio and you want a rigorous workout - check out this place for sure!

From your very first visit the studio itself is very welcoming and the instructors are knowledgeable, friendly and genuine. For beginners, the 8 week series with Liz is an invaluable experience. She is as informative and she is enthusiastic. All of the classes have proven to be interesting and varied. No matter what level yoga you are looking for, there is room to grow and always be challenged. Truly a great experience!

After reading many reviews on citysearch my girlfriend and I decided to try Yoga Effects. Also had a lovely conversation with Liz (the owner) on the phone trying to figure out what class to take beforehand. Even though we've both been practicing yoga for some time she recommended the beg/int class, which it turns out, was perfect! It was challenging and invigorating. We loved the instructor (Tyler) who was great at giving adjustments or talking us through proper alignment and even helped us do our first headstands! And he's not too shabby on the eyes either :)
The studio is clean, warm, and welcoming as is the staff. We'll definitely return!
This gem is only 6 months old so I suspect once people really get wind of it, it won't be the quiet haven it is right now so rush on over for some personalized attention while you still can!

I've been to a million yoga studios, and this one truly stands out. In addition to having motivating and wonderful teachers, who genuinely care about their students' progress, each and every teacher at Yoga Effects is well versed in all the important anatomical principles. This really helps to understand why we're doing what we're doing in the postures, and what the "effects" of yoga really are!

Yoga Effects is unique in that it focuses more on your awareness of your physical body and wellness instead of spirituality. Inner strength and goal setting is emphasized and classes are designed to help you meet them individually and as a group. Any spirituality you get out of the class is generated from within the individual and not the instructors. There is particular attention to personal adjustments and progress. You are guaranteed a workout without judgement. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this chic studio that leaves you energized, sweaty, and always wanting more!

The classes are small. Yoga Effects is run by the owner. The space is modern and clean, and the teachers are so talented and not full of b.s.. They will really help you learn the tricks to succeed in new poses - and spend the time with you until you do. Great mixture of old school yoga and keeping fit/burning calories. I have taken yoga all over the world (including the "top" yoga studios in NYC), and this is my favorite yoga studio.

Over the past two years, Ive tried most of the top yoga studios in NYC and finally found the quintessential studio Yoga Effects. As I enter the studio, the owner greets me like a long-time friend and yogini. The ambiance is serene and clean and feels more like a yoga sanctuary rather than a studio. Instructors obviously love what they do and genuinely care for their students they teach with sweetness, modulate their styles according to the students needs and encourage students that want to be pushed. Finally, the perfect yoga studio!
