I have not lived in the area long and saw this salon's website. It looked amazing. I saw a haircut by Kate that I wanted and it resembled a haircut I had in the past. I called and Kate was on maternity leave so they made me see someone else. I asked her if she could do the cut and she said yes. I told her it was very important to me for it to be like the picture I had of my hair from the past because I had upcoming graduation and wedding. I also asked her for highlights that were copper and peeked out from my layers. She barely looked at the picture I showed her. Then, she bleached my hair and then applied toner to it (a $20 extra charge that I did not know about). My hair came out orange!!! Not only that, but the highlights did not even go up to the root! When I told her my hair was a little too orangey she was very hateful with me and acted as if it would be a hassle to fix it so I said well maybe it will look better dry. She then started cutting my hair. She cut it waaaaay shorter than the picture. When it was dried, it almost looked like I had a bowl cut with orange stripes. I was charged so much for that horrible cut and color that I just wanted to cry. She was still hateful, but I did not like my hair. When I got into the car I cried and cried. I knew my hair would not look good for the wedding :(. I called to complain about the color, made an appt. then drove all the way back only for her to dye my hair back to my natural color. She said to put highlights in it would be an additional $50 even though she is the one who messed up and did chunky orange highlights when I wanted thinner copper ones. I have never had such poor customer service. It is now the week of my wedding (3 weeks after the cut) and my hair still looks horrible. I cannot do anything with it because it is so short and has weird layers. At least with the cut I was supposed to have I could put it in a ponytail. And don't get me started on my bangs...........!

I have had my hair cut and colored at this very aesthetically pleasing salon a few times. It has always been a decent experience and the pricing very reasonable. When I first went in I wanted bright pink hair, when I was done, it was very much pink and so was the girl who rinsed my hair. (oops!) I was disappointed however that they did not put any type of seal over the color, when I came back in that next week to get it cut off my face and body was very pink and a different girl that cut my hair wanted to know why they had not sealed it so she put some on it before I left which helped me a ton. No more bleeding over everything! It would have just been nice had they done that to begin with but hey mistakes happen, even at the best salons. I have since been back for another hair cut and bang trim which were great. The stylists at Onyx are very skilled when it comes to cutting edge techniques and coloring which I think may scare some people who are used to the usual run of the mill shop. You just have to give it a chance and never leave crying after a bad experience, explain you are not pleased and I am sure any good stylist would gladly step up to fix it or have someone else do so. My motto is, it will always grow back...well hopefully ;)

The atmosphere is great, the employees are very friendly, the prices are reasonable, but this is a "one size fits all" shop. If you want short, choppy, uneven hair with large chunks of opposing colors, this is the shop for you. If you want hair with a normal cut and natural color, go elsewhere. I went, photo in hand as an example, and asked for my very long, naturally curly hair to be TRIMMED and my color to be touched up with lowlights and highlights to blend in with my last coloring (my hair is light brunette with golden, honey blond highlights). When I left, my hair had been SHEARED (told it was to give it extra body -- all it did was give it frizz) and dyed a salt and pepper mix of platinum Barbie blond and Cruella de Ville black, length in the back was still the same, but length on sides was a good 3-4 inches shorter. I paid $135 dollars for a cut and color that I spent the next three days trying to trim up to correct myself and scrubbing my hair praying that somewhere the gold would come back through. Finally, after many tears, I made an appointment at another salon to salvage what was left of the hair I was proud of before I stepped inside Onyx. I WILL NOT BE BACK.

I moved here two years ago from Northern Virginia and used drive back there for haircuts. I was afraid to let someone new cut my hair because my hair is problematic, I tend to be a perfectionist, and I've always lived in major metropolitan areas where you can generally find the best stylists.

So it was with some trepidation that I went to a new salon. Now that I have, I wish I'd done it sooner. Kate did an excellent job with my hair--I love it. It's edgy yet age-appropriate. Kate cut and styled my hair for my features and hair type, and she took the time to show me how to work with my cowlicks when I style my new do at home. And finally, with Kate's guidance, I am using the right hair products.

The staff is friendly and helpful, and the salon has a comfortable atmosphere. If you're wondering where to go for your next haircut, I highly recommend Kate.

Pros: friendly, fun, professional, great haircut

I got my hair cut and colored by Erica Snead, I was so nervous because usually I walk out of a salon crying and feeling awful. When she was done with me I felt so beautiful and left feeling amazing. She took her time and really listened to what I really wanted. I highly recommend paying a little more for an adorable haircut and color. She is so awesome!!!!

I'm torn on my experience there. I will start by saying that I think they are very reasonably priced. I received a cut and color and I loved the color (though I think she used semi permanent and not permanent as I requested). The cut was okay. Not really what I asked for but it wasn't horrible. The precision of the cut was good but it just wasn't the style I asked for.

My critiques are as follows: First of all, my stylist was NOT professionally dressed. She looked as if she was wearing clothes she would lounge around in at home. She wore NO make up and her hair was not styled. When I come to get my hair styled, I want the stylist to look put together and fashionable. I expected more based on their website and the fact that they market themselves as a high end, avant-garde salon.

Second, when my stylist applied the color, she did not take care to ensure that the color did not get on my skin. For several days afterwards, I had color stains on my skin. A little conditioner or petroleum jelly along the hairline would have prevented this.

Third, the conversation she chose to engage in was NOT professional. She talked about getting drunk and being hung over etc. That might be entertaining with your girlfriends but I don't think it's professional to engage in such conversations with clients, especially new ones.

Overall, I cannot say I had a bad experience but I do not think this salon is hitting the mark in all areas. This salon as the potential to be truly great but they need to work on some areas of professionalism. I'd probably go back because I did appreciate their technique with regards to color; however, it's not the high end salon experience I expect and have grown accustomed to in larger cities up north.

Pros: Reasonable Prices, Rusk products

Cons: Not as professional as they could be

Feels like you are in a up scale salon in New York not in Salem Va. Everyone is qualified and has their own unique style. I have never had a bad hair cut or color.
While the prices are higher I would gladly pay more for a great cut and experience.

Cory is AWESOME.
