This cafe is a total treasure! Year round you can try great soups and pizzas full of surprising combinations. My favorite pizza is a taste extravaganza called "K's Kitchen" with cilantro pesto sauce, artichokes, capers and carmelized onions. There are also wonderful nightly specials including curries and pasta dishes. The curries tend to run to the hot side and are full of a deep blending of flavors. My favorite pasta dish is Cajun Pasta that is a complex combo of cajun spices, tomatoes, olives, greens, peppers and feta cheese over the most playful swirly pasta. There's always a fun selection of desserts with the pies taking the top ranking with super crusts. You can only go right going to the Driftless Cafe which is running brilliantly these days under the skillful eye of John Tully and a great staff.
The Driftless has excellent pizza, breads, soups and sandwiches. They also offer specials like pasta with or without meat, and vegetarian dishes. I usually would rather eat at home, but am never disappointed with this place. In fact their salads are better than my homemade. They use local produce, humanely raised meat and I think largely organic ingredients in all their homemade offerings. They also serve beer (quite a variety) and wine.
They have a small space, but it is very comfortable, booths, lots of wood all around (including trees as posts) and local artists work on display. Some evenings there is music and an improv group performs there from time to time.
For casual, comfortable dining there is no better in Viroqua and it is priced pretty reasonably. Closed these days on Sunday and Monday.
