From the outside..never would have guessed. Cozy and quaint. Great waitress.. The baked haddock and steak tip combo to die for.. Chicken parm was the best we had ever had. Huge portions.. Great value. We will be regulars there.m

The staff is warm and welcoming especially Stacy, the bartender who works there all the time it seems. She is the best bartender and ALL of my Male friends find her extremely attractive and the Women love her because she always makes sure everyone gets served instead of catering just to the guys like many women bartenders do in many establishments.Stacy is a very down to earth person and is a joy to see her when we dine and have a few drinks.I have never met a better bartender who cares about her patrons and still makes sure they play by the rules of the establishment. This place is lucky to have someone like her so we will definitely return and let our friends know.I also want to say that the food is EXCELLENT as well as being very reasonably priced....oh and the drinks are also reasonably priced as well. Good food,Good Value, and outstanding service...what more could you ask for. The "non commercialized' places are usually the best.

We just love love love love this place! It is so homey and relaxed, and the food is amazing. You cannot beat their prices and the portions border on rediculous. On a busy night be prepared to wait for a table- but it is always worth it. Salemwood is the 1st place we think of for a night out. Try it for an intimate cozy dinner and you wont be disappointed!!

Went on the basis of other reviews with the 10% off coupon we printed out. Great food and our kid found crayons and loved the ravioli and the haddock, too! The portions are huge, the price for the 3 of us, with drinks, was only $20.00! what a bargain! The service was friendly, folks at the next table stopped by to chat - great down-home dining experience and great food. Couldn't be happier!

The food is outstanding here. Although there is a bit of a wait all the food is cooked to order and so good. The prices are reasonable and the staff has improved.
I would highly recommend.

This down-home place had tasty food with huge portions. We had the mixed grill with steak tips, chicken tenders and a home-made sausage with the homemade fusilli on the side, plus the seafood trio. It was all delicious and piping hot. We waited awhile, but it wasn't frustrating. Highly recommend this place as a "cheap" eat.

This was my first trip to this restaurant and I can't wait to go back. There was so much food, starting with the amazing rolls. My meal came with a good sized salad and a giant sweet potato. The steak tips were cooked the way I asked, medium rare, and were yummy. But the best was the baked stuffed haddock. The stuffing was just so buttery. I couldn't stop eating it. The waitress was very attentive and even asked if we had a coupon, which I did and might have forgotten about. I'm looking forward to going back to try other dishes.

I live near by and requent this place often. I generally love it but the service has gone down hill. The dining room is terribly under staffed. Generally, I don't mind, because the food is worth the wait. Last night I came in the door at 7:45 and the waitress said the chef was done for the evening. What restuarant closes their kitchen at 7:45?

Salem Woods relies on family for its service, so you need to be in the right mindset to visit there. If you're looking for a white-glove, black-truffle-laden experience, grab your wallet and head down to Exchange Street to waste your hard earned money on haute microcuisine. But if you work hard and want to eat hard, Salem Woods is your place. We live right next door and go often, and our service is never a problem as long as we go there looking to have good home-cooked meals served by people who could be our mothers or sisters. This is a homestyle restaurant, which is a dying art when swamped with buffalo chicken and drive thru's, and we try to support them as much as possible.
Another reason we go there as often as we do is that we have developed a serious addiction to their Baked Haddock. Buttery, lemony and robust, the fish is flaky and light while the cracker crumb leaves you licking the volcanically-hot dish. ALL the pasta is good, and the steak tips (order them a step above where you want them - they tend to come out undercooked) are marinated perfectly. Everything is homemade, and even the simplest food like chocolate pudding leads to a moaning, eye-closing experience.
Salem Woods gives you what you pay for - and then some! Their portions let us eat for days. I couldn't reccomend it more.
Tell Michele and Kelly the locals sent you!

Went on a nice evening, was a bit crowded but we sat at the bar where a "Hottie" bartender named Debbie served us quickly and with a pretty smile....the bartender was the capper on a great dinner. We wanted to ask her if she'd be our waitress too, but I guess that would be a little much to ask. Honestly the most beautiful "40-something" we've ever had the pleasure to meet. Food is plentiful and good, excellent Chicken Parm, seafood fantastic....and the price is right. Definitely worth the trip, especially when Debbie is on duty!!!!!

Service was horrendous!!!! She could not have been much ruder or snapped with any more sarcasm. Waitress would not take our order until she had taken another order 1st (all food cooked to order is great) 1/2 hour wait to put in your order when there are only 5 tables in the place is ridiculous since 1/2 the tables were already eating!!!!!! Everything was a project. food was ok for the price....there was alot, but the quality was very average! Too many other much better restaurants with waitstaff that at least acts like they give a !$@#)

My wife and I have visited Salem Wood several times since my last reveiw and I am very happy to report that they have gotten their act together and the service is markedly improved. The food is still fantastic and well worth the trip. We live in Woburn and manage to get there at least every other month. Try it you will not be sorry. Don't forget to print the coupon that is on this listing. I always forget, but it is still a value and good dining experience without the discount coupon.

I found this place on City Search one weekday night when my guy and I were looking for some good food at a low-key place for reasonable prices. I am SO glad i found it! The appetizers were typical american bar food (wings, mozzarella sticks, etc.) but the entrees are so yummy! This is a family-owned place and everything is cooked to order - which i love! My guy had the surf & turf - perfectly marinated grilled tips were delicious (and reheated well the next day). And I had the lobster ravioli - no skimping on lobster, cream sauce was phenomenal, and plenty of medium sized shrimp on top! Portions are good sized - enough to take home for lunch the next day. Drinks were good and strong too. The waitstaff is very friendly and efficient. We can't wait to go back! This is a great little local place... My only regret is that our printer wasn't working so I couldn't print the 25% off coupon! They do need that to give you the discount - but it's not like the bill was outrageous anyway....

My wife and I moved to Malden in Sept 2006, and we dine at the Salem Wood Cafe once a month. We will dine there more once I get into another professional position. Wow, the Salem Wood Cafe has a very down-to-earth and friendly waitstaff. I went there for my birthday in December and had an outstanding time. I could have gone anywhere including Legal Seafoods in Burlington, but I am happy I went to the Salem Wood Cafe. I love their surf 'n turf. Plenty of steak tips and I had the haddock with it. Plus, a huge side order of linguini came with it. The salad was good too. We were able to take the linguini home with us. We are so full that we never get to order dessert. My wife and I don't drink so we only wait in the bar section until a table is ready. We try to go there during mid-week. We have invited different friends on different occasions to join us. One of them was a vegetarian, and he was able to find something he loved on the menu and it wasn't a "veggie burger" either. The 25% off coupon is outstanding, and we don't bring it all the time. The restaurant isn't a "tuxedo and gown" dining place. Instead, the place is superb for great selections of food with big quantities at a very affordable price. Can't beat that and that's why it is easily my favorite restaurant in the area. I really have had a great time at the Salem Wood Cafe each time I was there. I have taken my sister to join us, and she loved it too. If you are in Malden, MA, I'd recommend the place over the other restaurants. I have eaten there on Saturday nights and there was about a twenty minute wait, but it went fast. The dress is casual, but some people dress up too. I have always found a space in the parking lot even on Saturday early evenings. There are many good food choices on the menu, and I wish I could try a different one each time. However, I love the surf 'n turf the best. This family owned restaurant is the best, and I have eaten at many places in the Boston area. Jay. Malden, MA.

We went there because of a newspaper coupon offering a 25% discount (that they honored.)
Being Saturday night the wait was about 20 minutes as estimed. In talking with other waiting patrons (all regulars), and a few seated at the bar, we experienced their universal acclaim for the restaurant.
We started with a crabcake appetizer that was too heavy on the bread and too light on the crabmeat but it still tasted good. Next they brought us warm, crisp rolls and salads -- both enjoyable. Our entrees included the surf and turf for me (broiled haddock and steak tips) while my wife had the broiled seafood trio. These meals had excellent flavor and the tips were cooked perfectly medium-rare per my request. For my side dish I had ziti with their house tomato 'gravy'. Note: If you get it out of a jar it's called 'sauce'. But if you make it from scratch homesyle it's earns the distinction of being 'gravy'. Their gravy was as good as we have at home, an excellent compliment to the cooks. Another worthwhile feature of this place is they offer 1/2 carafes of wine.
For dessert we had tiramisu and rice custard that were delicious. They are quick to refill your coffee cups as needed.
The tables are carefully cleaned between diners and the restrooms are in perfect order.
What more can you ask for? Excellent food in large portions, economical pricing, and cleanliness.

I have lived in Malden my whole life so I was shocked to discover that this place had changed ownership and is as good as it is! We stopped in on Saturday night not sure of what the wait would be, we waited approximately 20-30 mins. While waiting we had a drink and took in the local hubbub. We started out with a nice salad and delicious salad dressing. I had the baked stuffed haddock which was out of this world and my boyfriend had the chicken parmigiana. His "platter" came out and we gasped at the size! He loved it! We were too full to take in one of the desserts. This is our new favorite place, and they WANT you to use the coupon!

My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. The place was deserted, although a couple people did come in after we had been there for awhile. The waitress was nice, definitely "old school," but relatively friendly. I had the "Triple-X Ceasar Salad," and I have no idea what the triple-X stands for. It was fine, not particularly huge, and literally covered in croutons. My BF had the steak tips; these were excellent - cooked perfectly, tender and tasty, with yummy fries. All this and a coke for $20 including a generous tip. Great value I think.

Another Friday night wondering where to grab a bite to eat, as I was checking my Email I saw
an ad for the best of Boston restaurants so figured what the heck, give it a check. Started with
seafood and ended up at this place close to home and Wow. The wife and I had to wait about
40 min. for a seat, the place was buzzing. Went and got a drink at the bar and watched some
baseball. The drinks were huge and quite strong and less than $5. Staff was very friendly and
crowd was happy and peaceful. The smell from the kitchen was mouthwatering. We asked several of the staff what was the best choice from the menu and everyone had a different pick.
I guess that's because so much is good. I chose the shrimp scampi, and the wife picked the baked haddock. The bread came out first, piping hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, just right. The server was funny and told us we had to wait a little because there was only two people cooking and with the size of the crowd they were a little backed up. Next came our salads and I chose the oil and vinegar for the dressing. The oil was a nice dark xtra virgin
with great flavor, not like some places where it's as light as water. The veggies were crisp and fresh. So far so good. Then came the GIANT sized scampi plate with what looked like a whole pound of linguine and 7 yes 7 delicious jumbo shrimp. I managed to finish about 1/3 with the help of my wife. Her baked haddock was absolutely out of this world. I mean just perfect. It was like the scampi, HUGE and cooked just right, not dry, not gooey, just moist and flaky. The
bread crumbs on top were seasoned and buttery, Yum Yum. The coffee even was delicious.
With the coupon the bill came out to $20. I felt like I robbed somebody. I had to leave a big tip so I could sleep. All I can say is WOW! Quite a wonderful little place.

We've been dining at the cafe on a regular basis since they opened. They have great food, for a reasonable price with friendly service and tasty drinks!

For a regular night out, date night or family time, it can't be beat!

Food is cooked to order and the popularity is rising, so you may have a short wait on a Friday or Saturday night. Have a drink at the bar, the wait is worth it.

The baked haddock is excellent. They also have home made pasta and a nice red sauce. The steak tips are also delicious!

Having moved to Malden a short time ago, my boyfriend and I are happy to have found this place. I read all the great reviews and decided to come here for dinner. The portions are very generous and the value for the food you get is by far one of the best. This past Monday, we had called for take out since it clearly says on this page (and many others) that they provide carry out and delivery. We were told that they don't do take out at all. For a very popular restaurant in a busy city like Malden, you'd think that take out and delivery was a service they can really benefit from! Its too bad they don't provide this because we really love the food, but can't spend the time to eat dinner here everytime we're craving Salem Wood. Also, we were told by our waitress the last time were there that we should print out the coupon on here, but its no where to be found!

Food excellent - very fresh. Baked Haddock and Steak combo only 12.95 - huge portion. Service very good - with the coupon from this site - a steal... there is off street parking too. Great family atmosphere.

Had haddock, shrimp $ scallops, girlfriend had soup. Reasonably good but not extraordinary. Ambiance is good for a family. One website provided a 25%off coupon, no problem using it, so the bill was pretty low. Service was fine.

The food was fresh - portions HUGE. Best Veal Marsala and Baked Haddock my wife an I have had. We dine out 2-3 times a week and this will be a regular stop for us. Family atmosphere. Cozy - and there is off street parking just next store (we didn't know about until the waitress told us.) Great COSMOPOLITANS HERE - THEY USE CONTREAU - NO CHEAP STUFF - and their prices are well below market price! (4.50?)
