I personally do not care so much whether the staff and doctors are friendly or not... What I do care about is whether they are competent to diagnose my children's conditions correctly and provide the safest and most effective treatment. This is why I would not recommend this practice to other families. Besides other mistakes, they misdiagnosed my 6 month old son with an ear infection that just would not go away. This resulted in 40 days worth of high doses of various antibiotics. I finally requested to be referred to an ear specialist who confirmed my suspicion that my son was not suffering from ear infection but rather had some fluid in his ears which made him feel unconfortable... Alas, by that time it was too late to avoid an allergic reaction to antibiotics and my 10 month-old ended up in ER... If a pediatric practice does not know how to corretly diagnose one of the most common medical problem in infants (ear infection), how can anyone believe they can diagnose correctly other, more rare conditions!? Bottom line, I don't feel I can trust the medical staff that practice there and I am looking for a different practice to treat my children in the future.

I have never waited so long in my entire life. Then, all the adminstrative details were totally messed up. Does not exactly inspire confidence.

This practice is wonderful. The doctors and nurses are all very friendly, know my child by name and always give excellent care. We were lucky that they were close to our home, but this by no means dictated our choice of pediatricians. The office is very busy and the wait times can be long, but it's worth waiting.
Our child was diagnosed with a rare disorder early on, and the doctors managed the situation very professionally and referred us to a specialist. They also worked hard to keep us from having to admit him to the hospital. Incidentally, I work at a hospital, and avoiding an admission is best, when possible, especially for children. They are exposed to so many germs in a hospital, so we appreciated the doctors' office treatments that kept us out of the hospital.

Absolutely rotten. I was yelled at as a parent more than once; told I hadn't provided shots to my kids when I subsequently provided proof I had-- even if they still needed some.
My older child was yelled at and told she was obese and had to do her first 'female' exam even though we were just coming in for shots-- then I left the room and my daughter emerged in tears.
The practice tried to sell me on pediatricians prescribing psychological drugs without testing, saying they do it all the time. I was being yelled at at that particular moment, and when I asked if the doctor was accredited to provide psychological evaluations or medicines, she backed down and got quiet. It turns out my son didn't need drugs nor had ADHD. I did get a referral out of them but it wasn't pleasant.
The wait tends to be bad as well.
We are switching practices, no matter how conveniently located this practice was.

This practice has seen our family through some very serious illnesses. Their competence, caring and organization has made the quality of our lives manageable in the worst of times and wonderful in the best. Dr. Russell is our personal favorite but all of the doctors and staff are so conscientious and considerate that they make even a paranoid, neurotic, Internet-researching mother like myself feel that I've got the best people looking out for us.

We are in the process of finding a new pediatrics office, the office was just so convenient (we hear this a lot from other parents). We have refused to see Dr. Larkin for the past few years because we just felt that everything was brushed off as 'overly worried parent syndrome'. One of the times we were told we were just being worried parents resulted in a weekend dash to INOVA where my child was admitted and did not leave for 5 days. We then saw Dr. Russell - your child cannot leave his office without a prescription for something. Our child was diagnosed with asthma by him because of a nighttime cough. At a visit to Children's Medical Center in DC where Russel had prescribed an exam, we consulted with a specialist who agreed that the child did not have asthma and there was nor reason for the test (OTC antacids were the fix for what turned out to be minor acid reflux). It was when we got home with a pile of medicines for Asthma that I became concerned with the pure amount of medication. We were told not to worry about it by Kidz Docs 'the child can stay on the medication until college'. After consulting with another specialist about my concern regarding the pure volume of medication, something he said hit home 'tests may show they are relatively safe but the truth is that nothing good ever came from long term steroid use'. We moved away from Russel to a Nurse Practitioner who we were actually happy with. From that point on smaller annoyances have built up and we are at wits end.

Medicine - okay; wait time - intolerable most days; billing and accounting - completely incompetent: While this practice provided good care for my child, they accidentally sent a bill still being considered by insurance to collections. Upon calling, I wrenched a verbal apology for the error by the managing physician, but was told they could not recall the debt as it had been sold.

However, even after the bill was paid they would not take my child back as a patient due to the bill having been sent to collections - at their mistake. Their collection agent screamed and hollered, cursed, made threats and was generally abusive - while doing so in the name of The Kidz Docs.

In short, professional incompetence by the billing staff has cost my child his pediatrician. This is unacceptable and inexecusable.

Apparently, money is first and children are second at The Kidz Docs. I suggest looking elsewhere for a pediatrician - preferably one who does not penalize children for the mistakes of practice staff.

While searching for a new pediatric practice, I was surprised to notice that not a single one of The Kidz Docs providers made the "Best Doctors" list in the Washingtonian. My child is now at Pediatric Associates of Alexandria, where several of the physicians are on the top docs lists in the Washingtonian.

Much better care and more professional staff there...

I went to this doctors office for 18 years of my life, and it was always really great. The nurses were extremely nice and knew just how to handle everything we threw at them. The offices may be small, but they know how to be quick and efficient. It was always easy to call in early mornings when I didn't feel well, and I would be there that afternoon. Last year, I got very sick with mono, and my doctor treated me extremely well. I was very glad to have been there and not anywhere else. Don't let the name worry you - these guys know what they are doing!

We have been so happy with Kidz Docs (despite the spelling of the name!) All the staff we have worked with is wonderful. A very organized (though busy!) office, with seperate well-child and sick-child waiting rooms. Well visits need to be scheduled way in advance, though it's very easy to get a day-of appointment for sick visits. They also have nurses and lactation consultants available during office hours and on Saturday mornings to answer any questions over the phone, which often can eliminate the need for an office visit. They are SO helpful, patient and wonderful. Their office is located just outside of Old Town, off the GW Parkway.
