I really liked this clinic and the nurse practitioner "Marty" the first time I took my child there. She took time to talk with me and answer questions and I felt like she took a more natural approach to medicine as opposed to pumping kids full of pills and medicine. During my second visit, however, I was approached with a completely different attitude.
I took my child in for a well-check up and told Marty that there were certain vaccines that I was uncomfortable with my child receiving. She asked which ones and I told her and that's pretty much where the conversation and visit ended. She told me that she would no longer see my child unless she was fully vaccinated.
I felt that she didn't care about my side of the issue and wasn't interested in engaging in a conversation. I also felt that she looked down on my for my decision.
Before leaving the room she said I would need to sign a paper stating my refusal to vaccinate. I waited in the room for about 15 minutes while my children started to get restless. The room I was in was just off the nurses station so I am sure they could hear the commotion. I finally poked my head out and asked how much longer and they said they would be in shortly.
So after waiting a total of 20 min to sign a paper a nurse came in with the papers and said she needed to check my daughter's iron level. When she returned I was involved with my other child and without any warning pricked my child and checked her iron. I was very disturbed by this, I felt like she should have let me know that she was going to do it and give me a chance to hold my child so I could comfort her afterward. After pricking my daughter's finger the nurse left and didn't clean up any of the mess, she left bloody gauze and other iron checking supplies on the table.
I was not impressed with the treatment I received because I chose not to do things her way. I felt like my refusal to vaccinate gave the staff license to treat me poorly.
The treatment I received and the attitude of Marty after this visit has significantly changed. She was only wonderful as long as I agreed with her point of view.
