Do NOT go here. I never go out of my way to write these stupid reviews, but this place is the worst excuse for a "mexican food" place I have ever seen. It should be a crime to call that mexican, what a joke. THERE WERE PEES AND CARROTS IN THE RICE......WTF.... Yankees taking a great cultural dish and pissing all over it. That is not it the food is just aweful save the time and $$$

I've been here twice and neither time was anything fantastic. First time was for dinner- the food is ok, its not too authentic but its not bad. Service was good. Price was a little steep for the quality. Second time was for appetizers and drinks on Cinco de Mayo. Place was much crazier. Service was still good even though they were very busy. Food was still ehh. It was a fun setting though and they had a lot of drink specials. I can think of several other Mexican spots where the food is much better and the prices are cheaper so I don't think I'll give this place a third try.

Pros: Good margaritas, convenient location

Cons: So-so food, prices should be cheaper for the quality you get

This is a really FUN place. Anytime, lunch, midweek dinner, weekend...a very lively, FRIENDLY place.
It's not a "fancy" upscale restaurant, but the casual, welcoming atmosphere is just what is often needed after work or with a bunch of friends on Saturday. The food is quite good and the prices are very reasonable by New York City standards. All the staff is very friendly, the bartenders are notably personable and fix some great drinks, listening to exactly what you want. As with any popular place--and this place is--when they are busy, they are busy and if it takes a couple minutes longer to get a drink or more chips at your table, then that's what it takes. But the staff friendliness and attentiveness overall is top notch. This is on my list as a "regular."

From the front door to the stage, this place is happenin'! Security is very friendly, the hostess always meets and greets with a smile, and as soon as I entered the door, it's party time! The bartenders are all warm and cordial and they make the best drinks in town!!! No watered down over pricing going on here!!! The food is excellent and you are always satisfied with the portions. I especially love the fact that I can get my guacamole made right at my table to taste! I can dip on that all night!!! The dj knows his stuff cause the dance floor is always popping! You can eat, drink and definately be merry at this conveniently located spot. Pop in after shopping in the Village or SOHO or make a trip (like I do) to party all night! Where else can you party hard for NO COVER??!!!! Oh...and did I mention the fact that there are Salsa dance lessons and live music every Saturday night??? Two sets of banging Latin music by different bands. I even had the pleasure of hearing this band on Halloween called "The Ideas" and they are HOT!! It was a band with funk and blues with a soft rock twist gave the place a whole new feel. The lead singer was off the chain! Once again, the dance floor was packed and everyone was pleased!! I love the fact that management always greets the tables with welcoming gestures and humor. We were always comfortable and serviced promptly and there is never a dull moment. I would even take my children there for a fun lunch or Sunday dinner. Thus far, I've celebrated 4 occasions there with private guests invited and we partied til the lights came on and security had to break our little hearts! High energy, good food, excellent drinks, live entertainment, courteous staff, slammin' dj...what else do I need other than Antonio Banderas to walk in the door and wisk me off me feet????!!! WEPA!

Pros: Thumbs up for variety

Cons: wish they had a location in Jersey (hint hint)

Visited recently for a friend's birthday- and had a blast! Great place to go with a bunch of people- loud, party atmosphere. Great margaritas- [I had mango- yummy!]- good food- [chicken fajitas -huge portion and very tasty. Oh and I think they have the best salsa - NO cilantro water here, but a thick and tasty complex salsa. ] , awesome Salsa band, - and everything was fairly priced and there was no cover. They also did have free dance lessons which a lot of people seemed to enjoy. Service is friendly and fun. For a good time, go here!

Pros: FUN!!!! Great relaxed place to go drink, eat and dance!

I agree with the earlier reviewer; they think they're classing up the joint by not allowing sneakers. But what's worse is that they wouldn't let US in after a salsa dance class because one guy had white jazz/dance shoes. It's a place that has dancing!! The bouncer had attitude and refused to answer me when I questioned him about why the white dance shoes didn't "count" as "shoes." What was that power trip about? Lucky for them the reviewers from a few years ago gave this place good ratings because they're keeping the average number of stars high. Check out reviews from the last year or so.

Pros: it's near other places you'd actually like to try

Cons: you may be stopped at the door

This place is great. OK, so the food is average Americanized Mexican, and it is definately not a "fancy" place, but the atmosphere is lively, friendly and fun and the food is good. The staff are always welcoming and friendly. Some of the best and friendliest bartenders in NYC. The management is warm and accomodating. It is a great place for after work happy hour, or to gather with friends for a fun and casual dinner and drinks. I've been going there regularly for years and have no intention of stopping now. Just go and ENJOY!

Just awful! Had to flag someone down to take our order.
Lousy margarita - don't think they even waved the tequila bottle over it - tasted like cheap lime-ade. Asked for no salt... but got it anyway.
Terrible salsa - actually the worst I've ever eaten and I've had a lot over the years. Watery tomato sauce with cilantro as it's only spice. I guess it's where the "This stuff's made in New York City" Pace Picante sauce ad came from.
Chimichangas were greasy, black beans were just nasty (old...!) and the quesadillas were hard as a rock. Guacamole was just green slime - no flavor at all. Have these people ever actually eaten Mexican food? I've had better at Taco Bell!
Top it off with horrible service - the waiter never came back to our table and my husband had to go get him to get our bill. I love salsa music and whatever the band was playing that sure wasn't salsa - just loud & bad.
In our 3 week visit to NYC this was the worst food/service/ambiance of all the restaurants we've been in. If there was an option to give it negative stars I'd do that because it doesn't even deserve a 1.

This place was not good. We started off w/ the $14 guacamole which was prepared at the table by the waitress and it was awful, she put way too much lime. For my entree I ordered the Ropa Vieja, yes I know this is a Cuban dish and I was at a Mexican restaurant but I'm sayin tho, why did everything taste like it was drenched in jalepeno juice. The waitress was nice tho, she brought me a free flan bc it was my bday but I still would not go back

Had dinner at Gonzalez y Gonzalez on Sunday 1/14. I don't know which was worse--the service or the food. Waited over 15 minutes for waitress to even come over to take our drink order--then waited 10 minutes more for drinks to arrive. The margaritas were weak. We had to request a refill of chips. Food came and was just warm. In addition, the food was awful. After food arrived, waitress never came back to check on the food. We were a party of three-not one person enjoyed the food; we all left our plates almost full Waitress finally showed us some attention when we received the bill and she came back three times in five minutes to pick up the check. After we left -- none of use were feeling very well.

Visited NYC from out of town and had dinner at Gonzalez y Gonzalez last Sunday with 2 friends. Was ready to seat ourselves after waiting for 15min (at 4:30 PM, no less) for a table in the half-empty restaurant. Delicious mexican food, better and more satisfying than most joints in my native Philly. However, barely 10min after we finished the meal, we began to feel nauseous. My friend and I spent the next hour throwing up in Penn station. Enough said.

this is not a restaurant, it is a factory that processes people; great locale means an easy audience, but the food is a commodity: who ever serves black beans that are cold? service is less than non-existant; a waiter flits by, drops a menu in your lap, hurriedly takes your order, and this is the last you see of the waitor; your food is delivered by a member of the kitchen staff, racing to deliver in the arcade environment; the thing that floored me was the waiter droping the desert menu under my elbow as she flew to another part of the restaurant, no words, no check in, no nothing, imagining that i would order. a big fat zero, the place feels like a rest-stop. this is the on-going suburbanization of NYC. we should have clued in when the hostess appeared 30 minutes after 3 groups had been waiting ...

I have been coming here regularly for a few years and this place has never failed to please.

This time I ordered from the lunch special menu: Ensalada de la Casa, Enchilada Suizas, and Chocolate Cake. The salad is one of few that I always eat. It is fresh and tasty - made with lettuce, pico de gallo, and shredded cheese - I usually top it off with their salsa.

The chicken enchiladas come with tomatoes, lettuce, spanish rice and black beans, cooked to perfection. The enchiladas are covered with a smooth green sauce that, although it is not spicy, it adds a lovely depth too the plate.

Although I have read that people have gotten bad service, that has never been my experience. In fact, my water and salsa bowl were refilled without asking. My waiter was very polite and friendly and fast.

Went there on a slow Tuesday night for a friends birthday. What a mistake. We sat for an hour and they waiter came by once. When we got up to leave and the waiter tried to charge us 18% for the two mediocre apetizers and one drink they did serve us.

Also, about a year back we went there for a party. The management refused to open the coat check even though we were a huge group (150). In the end several peoples coats were stolen from their tables. The manager said this wasnt the first time so it seems like this is a recurring problem. Take it for what its worth -- if you decide to go dancing there be careful.

I've been going to GyG's for 10 years, it's better than ever. Although the food is only so-so, and the service can be iffy, I still always know I'm going to have a great time when I'm heading there.

Bartender's Joey and Evan are two of the best in the world, they always hook it up and look out for you. Thanks for keepin it real for all these years!!!!

This place has only average Mexican food, but it's not the reason to come here anyway. The pretty and fun atmosphere and decor inside the place is the reason, and the trendy and bustling, yet not obnoxious or loud space within. Bit pricey due to location. Good for groups and after work.

I am pretty sure no one needs a good review in order to visit GyG's! This is THE place and it has been for years!!! Mexican decor and food. All kinds of drinks... and all this for an inexpensive buck! Well maybe not THAT cheap. But its all worth it! They play all kinds of music; you name it they play it! Live music is usually hispanic bands. Great for groups, or just a few friends or just you and your significant other. This place is an absolute must!!!

This place is hot! Thursday thru Friday nights its packed for live salsa and great djs. The bar is huge and the bartenders and servers are so friendly and always in a great mood. When I walked in I felt so full of energy maybe cause the place is so cool. On top of all that they don't charge a cover.

I'm not sure which restaurant the vituperative reviewer before me was at. This place is conveniently located and has exactly the kind of food you'd think it would--Americanized Mexican, not terrifically different from a Chili's. That's not meant as an insult. The place delivers just what it promises: a decent though not adventurous meal close to the trains, lower B'way shopping, and a couple of theaters. This isn't a place you go for a transcendant culinary experience and it doesn't claim to be. I found the staff reasonably attentive, and they brought snacks quickly for my two-year-old (very important!).

I don't know why anyone would rate the food and service above a three. Most likely they are rating the nightlife and the music, which can be fun. The service is horribly slow and inattentive and the food is mediocre at best. And they overcharge you for this lousy treatment! It took me and my buddy 15 minutes to get a drink at the damn bar, and it wasn't even busy. Waiters at this place, if you are reading this, refill the damn water, ask people if they need anything at least a few times (not zero) during the course of the meal, get the orders right, and don't come back ten minutes after we made our order to confirm what we ordered because you forgot to write it down. The bright carnival lights and crappy club music that blared throughout the restaurant probably didn't help.

G and G is definitely worth going to. Make sure you get there early (before 10) if you want to eat because you don't want to miss the action. A good mix of people (not a typical spanish restaurant). Average service, decent food Mexican Cuisine. Long bar...great tequila's live acts who tend to rock the house with great latin music. Show your date you have a little Latin Lover in you.
