I also find the prior reviewers - patty w, cara m, john t , very mean-spirited and pointless. Their reviews did not state any specific problems or suggestions, just personal venting!

I have also been coming here for the past 30+ years and found HELPFUL & KNOWLEDGEABLE ADVISE. There is and has been only one owner and she loves her birds & people who are going to commit to ownership of those birds.

And yes,Canary Bird Farm is not at it's heyday but for my money there is no comparison to the pet store chains!!!

Sterile/pristine conditions do not always = happy & healthy, such as is found in stores like Petco and Petsmart. She was primarily a breeder, not a pet store unlike the big chains who rely on puppy mills, bird mills.....

I have been in Petsmart, Petco...and have seen animals (fish, lizards, small birds dead in the tanks or cages, death happens at all hours. I have multiple animals; dogs, horses, pheasants, quail, finches....and I would NEVER buy anything from petstores, they are not knowledgeable or caring.

Canary Bird Farm is a wonderful place. I started going there with my Dad 40 years ago, and still visit them, even though I am now a state away. Their seed prices are incredible compared to anywhere else, so I buy in bulk. Compare $35 for 80 lbs. of black oil sunflower to $10 for 5 lbs. at a supermarket. I have bought several birds from Canary Bird Farm over the years, and have found them healthy and long-lived.
I find the prior reviewers mean-spirited. There is only one owner and this business has been her life's work. She is incredibly knowledgeable and I have sought her advice on numerous occasions. She may not be the most gregarious person, but she absolutely knows her birds. The gentleman who works with her is a retired policeman who has been with her for many years.
Admittedly, Canary Bird Farm is not at it's heyday. Years ago, there were hundreds of birds of all kinds and plenty of babies being hand-fed. You used to be able to walk through the outdoor canary aviaries and be surrounded by beautiful singing birds. But the owner is now old and has health issues. She would like to retire and has been trying to sell the business for a few years already. She will only sell to the right person, someone who understands birds as she does. In the meantime, she has been scaling down the operation and many cages sit empty, collecting cobwebs.
I understand how many people would like to find pristine conditions such as is found in stores like Petco and Petsmart. However, these are old buildings. She was primarily a breeder, not a pet store. The space which houses the birds has always had a dirt floor, because it is really meant to function as a giant aviary, not a fancy showroom. It has no ill effect on the birds. I can assure you that food and water is changed on a daily basis, but as any owner of multiple birds knows, there is a constant mess, especially with canaries. I have a cockatiel who uses her water dish as a toilet and a canary who throws half his seed around just to find the perfect one. The real test is to look at the birds themselves. I have always seen them happy and healthy. I cannot say the same for the poor birds I see at Petco or Petsmart, who too often look listless, depressed and outright sick. There is an extremely noticeable difference between Canary Bird Farm birds and those in pet stores. I do not know the details regarding the two dead birds one reviewer claims to have seen, but I will give the owner the benefit of the doubt in deference to the forty years I have been coming there and because there are several possible explanations. My mother boards her three birds there a few times a year (at an extremely reasonable cost of around $2/day per bird), and trusts completely in their care.
Bottom line is you can get a quality bird and quality seed and supplies at excellent prices at Canary Bird Farm, but do not expect to find five-star accommodations. This is not a fancy pet store and the owner is winding down her business. I will miss Canary Bird Farm, as I suspect it will be virtually impossible to find someone willing to carry on the business as it used to be..it was a real institution of old. It is more likely the property will be sold for development, which will be a true shame.

i don't recommand anyone to go buy birds from this place. The owners don't seem to care about their birds and don't take care of them. I used to go here until one day i saw two dead canaries laying there in a cage. Which i think is kinda disgusting. And what else is wrong with this place is that everything is dirty, from the floors up. dirty food and water dishes in cages along with rusted perches and no toys for the parrots. Oh and the owners are dushbags.

It's been a few years since I've been to the canary bird farm but it's still there and I don't imagine that much has changed. It was like walking into the rain forest with all the birds on open perches. It was a lovely place to go and buy bird food.
