We decided to stop at the establishment on our way through New York State for a casual lunch. It was unfortunate to see that the lunch on Sunday does not really exist and rather becomes dinner after 2 PM - who serves dinner at 2 PM?

My husband asked for a room for the night, was quoted a certain price, and paid it by debit card. Because of instant technology, (namely, my iPad) we found that his debit card had had a hold placed on it twice. This wasn't a computer glitch, but a problem with the inn, because the two amounts were different and the entries were separated by several minutes. Only one penny, but clearly an issue that originated in the inn. My husband went to the front desk with the iPad to complain and to verify the fact that the inn had caused the problem. The owner's response upon seeing the irrefutable fact that the inn had put a double hold on his account was to tell my husband that he had paid too little for the room. She then demanded another $10.00. My husband said that he was going to call his lawyer (that's me.) I explained to him the legal concepts of offer and acceptance, that he'd been offered the room at a certain price, had paid for it, and the price was a done deal. He relayed this information to the owner.
It's easy to be nice when everything is running smoothly, but now we know how Three Bears Inn deals with problems. We liked the place and used to stay there when we couldn't afford anything nicer. We recently stayed there for nostalgia. We'll never stay there again.

Whenever I travel the almost 800 miles of Interstate 81 from my home in North Carolina to visit family and friends in central New York, there is only one place I make it a point to stop for a meal...the Three Bear Inn at Marathon, NY.

The atmosphere is small town congenial, the food well-prepared, filling, definitely not fancy, and VERY reasonably priced. Saturday evening dinner is a delightful prime rib buffet for something in the neighborhood of $10-12 per person. The Three Bear Inn has a secret delight...the leftover prime rib is kept until there is a sufficient quantity to prepare prime rib hash for breakfast. The Inn also serves one of the best burgers I have ever tasted. This is a family restaurant, and Sharon the owner, is right out there making sure you don't go away hungry or disappointed.

The only possible drawback is the bar, which is adjacent to the dining room and can be somewhat noisy when the locals come in after work and on Saturday. However, this is balanced by the fact that the dining room guests, no matter who they are, will be invited to take part in special celebrations, as we were included in someone's birthday party. Did I say this was a congenial and friendly place?

Marathon, NY is the home of Grumman Aluminum Boats and is located just a few miles south of Greek Peak and Song Mountain, central New York's prime ski areas. For the fisherman, nearby Cortland is home to the Cortland Line Company and its outlet store. The local fishing for trout, bass, salmon and walleye is world renown.

Stop in, you'll be glad you did.
