Once you go here, you'll keep wanting to come back. No matter who's playing, the music is always of the highest quality. They showcase many of the greatest jazz musicians of our time there as well as (as yet unknown) powerhouses of talent. The setting is definitely upscale and the food, catered by Danny Meyer's Blue Smoke pit barbecue restaurant upstairs, is not like anything you've ever had in a jazz club before.

Our recent experience at Blue Smoke was horrible! It had less to do with the service, food, ambiance etc. and more to do with the band that was performing there that night. We were seated right in front of the musicians and everything was going well until the composer/saxophonist (who happened to be an 80 year old man) proceeded to scold us for so much as moving a finger during the performance. We literally could not breathe, smile, or blink during the set. He commented and said ?why do people who don?t enjoy this music always have to sit in the front?. It was very demoralizing and embarrassing especially since no one in our group was being disrespectful to him. Thankfully the club manager refunded us the $30 cover after we complained, but we left very annoyed and our night was ruined! The food itself (specifically the ribs and gumbo) were not impressive. I double we?ll ever be back.

first time at jazz standard we tried the "world-famous" BBQ, which was served cold and came to the table faster than our drinks, but our server was nice, plus we went there for the music anyway, so didn't care too much.
second time was today and I'm still kinda mad. (I work in a 4 star restaurant in midtown so I look at the service differently, but have never got upset over poor service or anything)
I was in the neighborhood today and sat down to have a drink. There is a couple at one table and a guy eating at another one. I sat between them, in front of the server who's chatting with the couple. There are no menus on the table.
So I'm sitting there waiting for the server to come to me with the menus I guess... He's still chatting, which is fine, it's been only 5 minutes.
Another 5 minutes go by and another server brings some food for the couple. She gives it to the server, looks at me, i smile, she goes back.
Another 5 minutes go by, the server stopped chatting with the couple, he's somewhere behind me, I don't turn around, probably he's coming with the menus...
A few minutes go by, this time another server comes outside to check on the guy who's eating solo. He also sees me sitting there with no menus. I kinda nod like "what's up man, I'm here ready to order", he says nothing and goes back.
It's been about 20 minutes since I sat down, 3 (!!!!) servers saw me sitting, waiting for service. nothing.
So I get up, cuz it's time to go, but I'm kinda curious where the first server went, so I turn around, he's standing behind me leaning against the wall, arms crossed.

I didn't understand why I was ignored, so I was gonna step to the guy ask him what I was doing wrong, but instead, I kicked in a chair by accident and almost fell. I got distracted, so finally didn't ask him, just put the chair on the top of the table, hoping to catch somebody's attention... I'm not sure if anybody noticed.

This place is well worth your time. The hostess and the servers were very attentive. The food is delicious and the entertainment has you longing to come back. We had two sides, an entree, two glasses of wine, a non-alcoholic beverage and a cup of coffee all for $127 which included the $30 show fee per a person. Don't hesitate, just pick up and go.

What a great place. Food was excellent. $32 bottle of local vine and service was super. Atmosphere was relaxed and very friendly. Place was clean and romantic enough to set you in Jazz mood.. I went with my mother who is visiting me from Europe and this was excellent night out for both of use. We went to see Mulgrew Miller Trio featuring Duane Eubanks. Excellent show. I recommend 100 % you won?t be disappointed. Also if you don't want to buy anything with $25 ticket price you get table and water.

Our time at JS was the perfect night to remember! I really loved the seating arrangement; not overly crowded, great view and sound no matter where you are seated in the house. On top of the great performance, the ribs from BlueSmoke were heavenly! Where else can you find a night of great entertainment and satisfying dining with friendly services?

Finding a parking space around its neighborhood should not be a problem as it is in an area of businsses, not a usual hangout place like East Village.

I recommend that you eat upstairs prior to going downstairs for a show. If you do this you can beat the line that forms upstairs to get one of the better seats in the house.

There really isn't a bad seat in this house like the blue note and they let you choose where to sit.

Great sound down there, nice layout, and good work with the couches, tables, and candles....it's all you really need for Jazz.

Great waiters who keep you nice and toasty. Make reservations for the shows and they will cost you around 25 bucks.....and you'll get your money's worth

I am from the south and as someone who prides herself on knowing good bbq I am very skeptical of BBQ places in NY. However, Blue Smoke/ Jazz Standard delivers in ways I could only dream of. The pulled pork sanwich left me remembering my childhood in Macon, GA. The sweet tea, though not true southern style, was a decent substitute. he fried green tomatoes were a little fancy for a southerner but they tasted like the ones my mother makes. Overall, I would give this place a 10 for NY BBQ and a 8 for true southern style- but that is saying a lot! Jazz below is fantastic. This is one of my new fave spots in the city. Only complaint- they didn't know what brunswick stew is. I sometimes forget that maybe you can't get everything in New York! God Bless Macon, GA!

JS has been set up to maximize audience comfort and enjoyment. The "rules" that have been instated provide an orderly, yet warm, environment. The staff is top notch. The food great. The selection of performers, outstanding. I love this place. I take my out of town guests here when they say "let's go see a show." Worth every penny.

I've only been to a handful of music venues in New York, but it would tough to imagine a better one than Jazz Standard. I highly recommend it. Somehow the space is set up so that you get a good, close view of the stage no matter where you are, and yet you don't feel like you are sitting in your neighbor's lap, either. It's intimate without being claustrophobic, and somehow manages to be both classy and relaxed! The food is delicious, the service is warm and attentive, and I like the faint scent of barbeque smoke that pervades the air. Just lovely.

Ok so you've been to the Iridium and the Blue Note and other Jazz joints that serve food and guess what...they all suck compared to my experience this evening tonight at the Jazz Standard. The waitstaff is quiet and attentive, the food is BBQ - who could ask for better - and the place is clean. You can really do dinner and take in a show at the same time. My one change would be to REMOVE HOME MADE POTATO CHIPS FROM THE jazz club menu...crunchy foods make no sense in that environment. Of course it doesn't say much for the guy who orders that either...

We had fun, its definitely worth checking out.

The club in and of itself was quite distinctive. Large and classy however reserve yourself for a night when the entertainment is of better quality. The drinks were ok but the glasswear was reminisnce of grandma's old crap in the basement. For God sakes spend some money on decent flatware also.

overall this place is great for a date and recommended. Very expensive though.

Saturday night with friends, enjoying the great tunes of Brazillian Jazz from Ray Vega and his band. Absolutely wonderful. The crowd is great; and definitely show an appreciation for the music. The desserts: what a treat! Delish!

I've been 4 times, and never had a bad experience. The selection of acts is consistently excellent. The audience are jazz purists - this is as good as it gets. Not full of tourists like Blue Note. Food is good, but there's a disconnect with southern BBQ and sophisticated jazz. Service friendly & efficient. Love the fact that it's smoke-free in a jazz club. My favorite jazz venue in NYC.
