Me and my cousins were there for a bday party having fun until one of the girls in our party was attacked by another girl and her boyfriend. After breaking up the altercation, I was escorted out for no reason. I do not recommend R Bar. I

The only bad thing I can say about this place is that it can get super crowded sometimes.

Aside from that, it's a great place to go. Staff is top notch and very friendly, everyone from owner to bus boys. Drinks are strong and prices are reasonable for NYC. Music is pretty standard top 40 stuff, but at a reasonable volume so you don't feel deaf the next day.

Bottom Line: Try their Long Island, you won't regret it.

Have been to R Bar several times in the past year or so. Usually have a fun time. It can get VERY crowded. Service is so-so. Some bartenders are really great, others have been pretty rude.

However the last time I went (Sat, Oct 9th) my phone was stolen and my friend's purse was stolen. When we reported it to the police, the detective we spoke to told us this was the 4th report he's gotten of this sort of thing happening at R Bar in the last couple weeks.

Is it the bar's fault - eh, who knows, probably not - it was VERY crowded the night we were there. But if you decide to go, just keep a really close eye on your stuff. Apparently somebody's been targeting R Bar for purse/phone snatching.

My friends and I were looking for a cool spot to grab a drink on Friday night to celebrate my engagement. We wandered into the swank lush R-Bar on Bowery and were extremely happy to see that there was a BURLESQUE show happening there that night.

The show was amazing it was a troope that has a regular gig there (Rhinestone Follies). The girls in the troupe were extremely friendly and cool-they gave us a deal on the admission after we told the door girl we were celebrating my engagement. The show was incredibly glamourous and old hollywood-these girls are gorgeous and classy !

The R-bar has comphy seating and delish drinks-nice cool vibe
.
I highly recommend R-bar to host a bachelorette or engagement party-try to go on a night that the Follies have a gig there !!! It's a great venue if you love glamour and burlesque.

I'm writing to let everyone know of the horrible service my friends and I received recently at R Bar, 218 Bowery St. We arrived at the bar well before the crowds. When asking for requests of the DJ, "Elan," we were rudely told, 'I'll play whatever I want, when I want' and the snippy attitude of the manager 'Michelle' was just as bad. The bar was hardly an exclusive club and you would think the money of 15 girls on a slow night would be welcome. Of all the bars I?ve been to in NYC, this is the worst.

I read some bad reviews here but I don't know why. Maybe I would need to come back again to see what they were complaining about.

At first sight, this bar looks a bit shabby and ghetto from outside. Probably because it is on Bowery St in the middle of nowhere. However, once you enter, it is actually very spacious with velvet couches everywhere. What is even better is that they have poles around! I have to say though, the poles are way too slippery to actually do anything with them.

The major complaint I have is AT&T has absolutely no reception at this bar. What a huge annoyance!

Planned a bachelorette party for my friend and made reservations at R Bar. Told if we got there by 11 we wouldn't need to wait in line. Also told we had a table reserved in the front bar and would have back bar access. Even called the day of to confirm reservation. When we got there, well before 11, were told we had to wait in line to get in even though we were on the list. When we got in, we were told we didn't have a table, only back room access. Specifically chose this bar because it's ROCK AND ROLL only to get there and find they play the same pop music club stuff everyone else plays. Crowd was definitely barely 21 frat kids. Not what they advertise, not what we were promised. In fact, we were blatantly lied to about what we were getting. We had one overpriced drink and bailed.

I celebrated my birthday here back in January and silly me waited until the week before to call and book a table. (No charge/bottle service required to reserve a table!) The manager informed me that they were all booked up with parties for that Saturday night but since I had my heart set on having my party at R Bar she went out of her way and set up a special private area for my party. The night ended up being incredible...it was my first time there as well as the first time for many of my friends and we all had a fantastic time. The decor in this place is so rockin' and unlike any other Manhattan bars that I've been to...its like a rock and roll brothel. The front room is large with couches and a really long bar (with the best bartenders!) and toward the back is a second room with stripper poles and another bar. The artwork consists of beautiful ladies posing with guitars, Blondie, and Mick Jagger to name a few. I've gone back a few times since my party and its always been a really great time...from the drinks, to the staff, to the crowd, to the music I give this place an A++.

I was planning my birthday party at R Bar, and it turned into one hot mess. They told me that for my party, my friends could say my name at the door and would not have a problem getting in, without waiting on line. Well, that turned out to be a total lie, and my friends were waiting outside in the freezing cold for atleast a half hour just to get in to my RESERVED area in the back. I think they must have let everyone in the reserved party area, because it was totally packed and I couldn't find my friends for my own party. Also, I was supposed to get a free bottle of champagne (due to over booking of the party room by the party planner) and I never got one. When I was looking for the manager to get my bottle, the bouncers just brushed me off. If you plan on having a party here, tell everyone to get there early, otherwise your party at R Bar will be OUTSIDE.

Recently caught a friend's band here. R Bar can perhaps best be described as what an aspiring hipster with a trust fund living somewhere in the heartland dreams of when he fantasizes about a "cool New York bar". The front room's decor consists of red velour, bad lighting, uncomfortable furniture, and gigantic photos of scantily clad women. (The photos are all treated to look like those pseudo-hologram things that used to come in Cracker Jacks.) In other words, all class.

The back room, where bands play, features two separate sets of stripper poles -- in case, I suppose, a glut of strippers happen to show up on any given weeknight. (Ladies, ladies -- no shoving!) The room is decorated with photos of CBGBs, photos of Debbie Harry and Joey Ramone playing at CBGBs, etc. Seriously, if your bar features multiple pictures of a different, much cooler bar, you have scaled new heights on the mountain of lameness.

I Recently came to R bar on a friday night. The music was great, they played nice mix of music from great rock to classics. We danced all night long, the drinks were cheap and strong. We even got a table at the back bar and had an area to our selves. I would definitely come back in the near future.

Once you are in, R Bar is a great place - good music and a fun atmosphere. But, what could have been a great night at a cool bar was ruined because of the a$$holes at the door. If you are a guy, you're not getting in after 11. In fact, even if there's absolutely no line, the bouncers will still deny guys at the door. NEWS FLASH: Women don't want to go to a bar just to be with other women.

A group of eight girlfriends and I were already there and planned on meeting three or four of our guys friends later on. The guys all came alone or in groups of two but none of them were able to get in. We eventually left to another bar where all of us could get in and had a great time there. R Bar missed out on a ton of business.

And, the whole screening process is so ridiculous because the guys that did get into the bar weren't what I would exactly describe as alpha males.

Management should definitely reconsider their door policy - it's such a shame that the first impression people get of R Bar starts with the jerks at the door.

I've been going to R Bar since it first opened its doors as a rowdy, yet chill ,rock'n'roll, fun-times-had-by-all bar. I'm sad to say that R Bar can longer be described that way. I was recently there on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday party where she reserved the back room (months in advance). A tattooed waitress with a major attitude informed my friend that her reservation was not important and proceeded to kick us out of the area my friend requested. We also encountered rude doormen who wouldn't allow members of my friend's party inside the not-even-close to crowded bar, along with a self-proclaimed "manager" with the worst Napoleon Complex in all of Manahattan.

Manager, you are not Scott Sartiano! R Bar, you are not Bungalow 8! Chill out and become the awesome bar that you used to be! Please, lose the attitude and hire employees that know how to show respect and have a good time.

I would suggest to anyone that is thinking of coming here to try somewhere else.

And P.S. Only three bathroom stalls in the ladies room? Are you nuts?

Place is great, besides the overpriced beer. $5 budweisers...lame. stick to draft, I guess.

Bands there were great, and the sound is amazing. We heard Black Flag and Bad Brains coming from the D.J., which ruled. Justin the sound guy is spectacularly awesome! Bartenders were very friendly, as were the doormen. Highly recommended, if you just got paid. When you walk in you feel very fancy, and you pay for it.

Went this past Friday with a buddy of mine. Was looking forward to it after reading good this about it here on citysearch and some blogs (i.e. Brooklyn Vegan). Unfortunately, this place turned out to be a cheesy nightmare! The bouncer outside told us, "you hook me up, and I'll hook you up," and that he had "kids to feed." Axnxious to see if this place was any good, we forked over $5 each. What a mistake! Place was wall to wall 19 year olds, with ABBA and the Steve Miller Band blasting on the soundsystem. The bartenders were nice with good service, but to say this is a new NYC rock n roll bar is a complete joke!! And I've been frequenting NYC "rock n roll" bars for almost a decade now!

Get rid of the cheesy velvet ropes outside, the extortionist bouncer, change the music to actual rock, prefereably modern, and maybe this place has a chance of being a nyc rock n roll bar as its been described. Otherwise, you may as well go to some cheesy club on S.I. as it seems to me there wouldn't be much difference. In the meantime, this place is a complete joke and waste of time

tremendously successful bar milking you for all your worth. Bouncers seem to hunt you down and give you hell before your within two blocks of the esablishment. NEVER book a band here!!!! This bar is understaffed, and undermanaged. THIS IS NOT A VENUE!!! You'd have a better show in your garage! you like to fight? no problem, the staff will start it for you, Private party? not really, you'll be sharing the back room with three other groups of people you've never met as the owners try to triple profits by triple booking. Nope, nobody will tell you its not a private party till they swipe your credit card. Got a problem? expect to be kicked out.

You don't need to pay that much for drinks to be treated poorly. I had an unfortunate situation where the bouncer to the ladies room wouldn't let me wash the drink spilt on me off my hands. He stood there and screamed at me. It was embarrassing. He was insisting that I had to wait behind the 30 person line to urinate, just to wash my hands. The women in line were all yelling to him that it was fine, but he yelled to them to shut the door and me outside of the room. He yelled at me for some time. He was very rude and upsetting. My friends and I left. If this is who they hire...why support this kind of behavior. Ladies put your tough skin on if you feel the need to go because these guys will treat you like dirt for one reason or another.

Ladies put your tough skin on if you feel the need to go because these guys will treat you like dirt for one reason or another.

Pros: batchelorette scene

Cons: bouncers are jerks and there is a line to get in...

.

I have been to r bar for 3 or 4 Friday nights over the past 2 months and the dj is one of the best around.
He is playing all vinyl (a rarity these days!) and can live mix two songs like no one ive heard.

Pros: DJ, Atmosphere

I went here on Friday night and was very unimpressed. I wasn't fond of the crowd or the smell of the place--it reminded me of a frat house!! the music was okay (too loud to have a convo) but it was far too packed to even try to dance. It's a good place to go for a group (if you want to party in a low-class stinky bar), but definitely not a place to meet people. A lot of ppl were overly trashed, pushing people like crazy to get through the crowded area by the bar and I noticed a ton of broken glass on the floor. (A sign that people are too drunk/the place is too packed/there are no barbacks around to cleanup) Basically, there are plenty of other bars that are better than this place -- but I have to say that most bars in this area are a thumbs down for me (i.e. BLVD).

Pros: pretty candeliers...

Cons: too crowded on the wknd, patrons are too drunk, bad crowd, smelly!

I was at new "R Bar" for the Republic of Loose CMJ show. The place was awesome, loved the ROCK THEMED photo blow-ups on the walls. The lighting, me personally, I'm a "Red Light District" kinda guy, but don't tell my wife. Once the live show was over the back room turned into the 'after show party' and BOY !!!! was it a party. All my girl friends were working the stripper poles like they were employed by flash dancers and that my friends is worth the visit alone. I loved the place ..... Don't listen to others GO TO R BAR and make up your own mind. (PS - Bring your hot girl friends !)

Pros: Decor, Lots of Space, Great Sound, Stripper Poles

Cons: Will get back to you !

.

The decor is beautiful and the bartenders are great! The back room has stripper poles for the girls that are feeling a little adventurous! The music could be better the DJ was a young girl playing songs off her computer. They just were not playing dance-worthy tunes at all.
Overall it was a good find on a cold night! I would probably go back again....

Pros: great atmosphere with trendy vibe

Cons: needs better music

.

This place is cheesey and bland! The sound is great but the music played is less then crowd friendly. We were there on Friday night and it was so quite yet the music was maxed as if it was a full bar. We would have stayed longer only for the loud noise. The decor is OK but still a little to bare. Bring back the old spot as that "ROCKED"

Had my party here and it was terrible. The waitstaff were poorly trained and we barely saw our waitress all night. The music was bland and the crowd was less then hot. Not in my top ten places.

With velvet ropes and an doorman with no personality this place has gone froma great bar like Pioneer to being a cheesey club style lounge with no style. The service is terrible and it feels by the decor that you are in a strip club in AC. And the fact its full of drunken college "dudes" makes this fact even more true. I use to love the Pioneer but this new style they have gone is wrong! So wrong!

Pros: The Exit

Cons: Looks like a Strip Club and if you hate Red at a Traffic Light you will hate this place

Went here before my party in Katra at the weekend and was very disappointed. I loved it when it was the other bar. The music was tooooo loudddd and there was way to many rude men. The bartenders were very nice but seemed not interested in sering unless you were really hot. The security was pretty gruff and unpleasent. I think they want to be a strip club here as the decor is very tasteless. Was not impressed!!! Bring back the neighbourhood bar

First of all, I love the Bowery. So many bars and conveniently located DOWNTOWN. I went to the opening party and had a great time. Then I came back for a bday party in the back room. Very cool spot, different vibe. Not that loungey atmosphere, no cover, no rope. a great spot for a party and out with friends! The "red" interior is very cool and love the stripper poles in the back!

Came here before heading to Katra Lounge across the street. Not a bad place, I actually like the red decor and cute art on the walls. However, it sort of feels mass-produced, like the multitude of lounges across the city. Drinks are no bargain and the crowd was a bit older, not what I'd call trendy.

Too loud to even think really. Not too crowded, and kind of a good looking crowd, but not worth trying to yell over the music.

Sadly the Bowery has succumbed to the velvet rope...and not in a good way. There isn't much "R" to this bar for starters and the longer I was there the more I wanted to leave. The music sucked rockets! The crowd is full of armatures. And the new paint job isn't good enough to make you forget that this was a far cooler bar when it was The Pioneer. Don't go!

The New York nightscene is becoming dangerously close to being taken over by the clueless MTV generation and thank goodness we still have places like R Bar to count on. Rather than listen to Justin Timberlake on constant repeat, R Bar boasts a perfect combination of rock 'n roll new and classics; a place where Blondie co-exists with Grand National. R Bar serves to remind us that a cool bar with great music is not an extinct species. The bar staff are friendly, funny and helpful. After a difficult week, this is a place to kick back and groove. Doing it differently, this place deserves respect.

I usually go to Maritime and Budakan, and I like this place. I like lounges with a rock and dance feel -- this is one of them. The decor is nicely done - no exposed brick. The photos and paintings of Mick Jagger with his wife balanced out the surprising choice to have some large photos of women in rocker-chick outfits. There are stripper poles in the back but they seemed like a funny addition rather than being tacky. The music was dance versions of rock&roll songs. Friendly staff. Good drink prices.

Pros: Great design. Large. Back Room is the best. Rock&Roll/killers-type music

Cons: Too crowded. Biker-women photos on wall.

This place is touted as a hook-up spot, but we watched groups of girls come in, notice the artwork of halfnaked women and the stripper poles in the back, and leave without even bothering to get a drink. All the patrons were guys. So they may think they're bringin in the hookups with the oversexed decor but it seems to be driving the girls out the door. Pioneer Bar (which R Bar replaced) had a casual but upbeat vibe and was always packed with cool people. Too bad it's gone.
And PS - R Bar doesnt have a drink menu - not sure why they're advertising rocked themed cocktails.

Was waiting to see if there was consistency with this place and I have to say after the 3rd visit, the staff especially the bartenders have been really accommodating and friendly. The drinks I have to say were reasonably priced too, not bad at all for a newly opened spot on the Bowery.

The music was great, played quite a lot of indie tunes and some rock and roll favorites. Especially liked the fact that tracks from bands like the Killers and Raconteurs were given some airtime as well.

R Bar would be a great place for parties definitely but am a bit wary of the stripper poles though! Maybe after a few drinks, who knows ...

...went to R Bar anticipating a "buttoned up rock and roll bar" but was horrified even before we walked in the door when we were asked if we were on the guest list!! I thought it would be a cool bar, not a really tacky club! Once inside it was chock full of people that were barely 21 & that I thought would be at a frat/college type of bar. Rude and pushing!! Most of the patrons were trashed and security was truly scary...ogling and sketchy.... R Bar is just a revamped version ( b/c of all the negative press) of The Pioneer bar --same location. However, The Pioneer bar didn't have the bad attitude, cheesy people and rude bartenders. I was so completely disturbed by the clientele and the lack of a cool vibe. Really bad drum and bass anyone? Even if it did have laminated pictures of iggy pop and the clash .....REALLY CHEESY!@@ steer clear if you don't want to feel like a old geezer going to a cheesy club!
