The Scene
On the surface, this bar appears to be just another noisy, crowded after-work or after-school scene. But move beyond the bar's cramped front room and find a casual crowd unwinding in a lively space with wooden booths, quirky wall art and mini table-side TVs. For the real surprise, slip behind a side curtain into a lavish bohemian lounge where would-be couples sink into inviting velvet couches amid Moroccan lanterns.

The Draw
Plasma TVs, dartboards, Web-access terminals, a jukebox, a pool table: There are enough diversions to occupy even the shortest attention span. The drink selections--beer, cognac, martinis--suit a variety of tastes, and raspberry liqueurs give the bar's namesake drink an appropriately robust flavor. While more obvious choices exist for meeting people and kicking back (or making out), this split-personality feline is ideal for those who want to keep their options open.

Key Points

  • 4 Rooms - 3 DJ's - 31 Martinis
  • Birthdays & Private Parties
  • Dance at Village Underground

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Wander into the bar between 4pm and 8pm, Monday through Thursday, for half-price happy hour; on Fridays (during the same hours) enjoy $3 well drinks and drafts.
  2. The Extras - The cozy loft with its pillow-laden wraparound couch can be reserved for intimate parties.

Ratings_icons good crowd

Laid-back and easy going crowd for the most part, except for one instance involving a group of dart players in the back. If all else fails, watch MTV.

Ratings_icons Fun bar with lounge attached

Suzy O. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 423

Fun, old style wooden booth bar in front. In back there's a more expensive lounge like area. Mixed crowd of older and NYU types. Good talking kind of bar because there are TV's blaring everywhere. Always have a good time there.

Ratings_icons Fun Place!

Sandy P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,453

This is such a neat bar/restaurant/lounge/club - you have to visit it! I think I'm having my 40th birthday celebration there! You can visit their website for more info, but what I particularly like is the funky lounge - antique-looking couches and chairs, and a roped off upstairs section for private get togethers. It's very intimate, and they have 1/2 price drinks and appetizers all days except Friday and Saturday. Definitely a must see (and experience)!

Ratings_icons Amazing Happy Hour

KKFitz

I went to Happy Hour here and the prices were unbelievable. I ordered two drinks with Stoli vodka and paid $7.00. Someone else ordered Dewers on the rocks and paid $3.50. It's unheard of in the city to get top shelf liquor for so cheap. The place isn't crowded either and you can hear eachother talk. Not the best music during Happy Hour, but with the cheap drink prices that is not the biggest deal. The bartenders are nice too so that is a bonuse! Next time I go out for Happy Hour I will definitely go here!

Pros: Great Drink Prices, Not Crowded

Cons: Dark, Bad Happy Hour Music

Ratings_icons Great Place for our Party

HeyJoe5

I've had two parties at this place. One birthday, and one small reunion. The manager Gypsee was super prompt returning all my emails and taking care of every detail. When we arrived everything was just as promised. Three rooms, and tons of drink concoctions. I really like this place.

Pros: Great Service and Drinks

Cons: Small bathroom

Ratings_icons Very Friendly Place With Something For Everyone

IngiB

This is one of my favorite places because there is so much you can do. Upstairs they have two rooms - one like an old style bar, and the other a Moroccan lounge. Downstairs they have dancing and sometimes live music. It seems to be a popular choice for groups because there is plenty of seating, there are couches, and the booths have high backs giving some privacy.

Pros: various atmospheres

Cons: music a bit too loud in the back room.

Ratings_icons you got me hooked...love the homemade vodkas

LatinMami

I was there last Wednesday for Karaoke for my friends birthday. We had a blast singing Karaoke in the lounge. We had the best homemade infused vokas..YUMMY..the pineapple and the verry berry were delicious. also had the beef sliders, veggie skewers and homemade potatoe chips all delicious. Very surprised to find good food in a bar. Just when we were tired of singing went down to the Village Underground and enjoyed the live music, amazing singers. Loved the old school reggae and disco that the girls sang. also loved how the band mixed the old and the new, mixed rock with the hip-hop. the band was having so much fun on stage that we stayed the entire night - didnt want to miss a thing. This place is a jem. Looking forward to going back soon

Pros: food, drinks, karaoke. live music downstairs

I love this place...I think my fav about it is the Karaoke! It's so much fun! I go all the time! But the thing is they also have other stuff there too! So if there are to many people signing you can play pool or go down stairs and listen to the professionals sign.

Pros: yummy eats and yummy drinks

Cons: nothing

Ratings_icons Best Sound in the City

Storm1

The Underground has absolutely the best sound in the city for such an intimate setting. Only other contender would be The Wha? Formerly of the same ownership. The drinks are nicely sized and tastey. The waitstaff is customer friendly, although it is possible to get lost in the shuffle on busy nights. The bouncers keep it orderly.
I was seated next to regular customers of the Blue Note last Friday, it was their first time coming to the VU. The UnionN was on stage. They said they they had never experienced anything like the VU, and were sure to come back. Overall, any quest for excellent live music should start here. You might make it a permanent home.

Pros: Best sound, great drinks, friendly staff

Cons: Food is so-so

Ratings_icons Good Happy Hour Spot, IF...

uesreview

FBPC has yummy happy hour specials including a wide variety of martinis and shots. The place is filled with old couches and chairs and has a vintage smell, but the younger crowd doesn't seems to think about or care about what the place would look like "with the lights on..."
Recommended for newcomers to NYC and to all in the winter when it doesn't matter that you're entering a dungeon during daylight hours.

I celebrated my 30th here and I have to say that the other 29 sucked compared to this night! I had 0 problems here. Not like some other places I don't want to mention! I just have to say Thank you to the party Coordinator Gypsee...SHE IS THE BEST! And I didn't have to worry about any of my friends having a good time because the guys could play pool upstairs while us ladies danced the night away downstairs! I will def be back! Thanks Gypsee!

I have to say I really luv this place! Really really really! On the weekends this place is hopping with different DJs and lots of people...and now they do KARAOKE 3 days a week! I love it! I really don't have to go to any other bar and then if I get tired of singing I go downstairs to hear the bands that play! I really love this place!

Pros: karaoke and fun

Customer service is number one in any business for benificial reasons(word of mouth promo ect. by customers). At the this establishment it varied. The guy behind the bar was pretty courteous while the young lady was rude and impatient. She had an expression on her face as if I was burden or something. One of the waitresses misplaced my credit card and doubted that she had it until she double check and found it (spend 15 minutues argruing with her).

Nice place and setting. Was here on Valentines day of this year for the first time. I can't really pass judgement based on one trip. But I will go back.

The music was okay but nothing special compared to another establishment I visited before. Maybe I went on the wrong night.

The drinks were top notch and strong!!! One of the best places to drink.

I was at both at the Village Underground and Fat Black P Cat and since they are sister establishments I rated them both together.

Village Underground was okay (average customer serivce)

Fat Black P*Cat was tremendous

This was a GREAT bar. It had so many rooms and atmospheres to fit all your moods. Though the bartender at the front when you walk in was really slow and really not personable. You over look that once you enter all these amazing rooms decorated to the tee. Great lighting and drinks were at a moderate price. Its close to the subway and West 4th, so you can easily get a cab.

Pros: great decor, close to subway, great lighting, strong drinks

Cons: slow staff

Ratings_icons Good, but used to be better

FBeck

A 3-1 type of place. When you enter its a sports/dive bar, walk further its a lounge, go downstairs and it has more of a club atmosphere. They have half price drinks for hour on Wednesdays (or at least they used to).

It's still a decent place to hang out other than on weekend nights, where the place develops more of an attitude. The place has become a little snootier in the past few years, but not bad compared to some of the other places in the city.

Plus it's the only place I know in NY I can get Tusker beer. A big plus in my book.

Ratings_icons Definitely Worth Checking Out

rbop23

I had a party on Nov. 29th. The coordinator did everything possible to accomodate my needs. The bouncers at the door were all very friendly. The only annoying thing is the minimum amount per person if you have a guest list. It's $25 a person that needs to be spent in order to have a table/guest list. This gets really annoying because it generally means you will get screwed by your friends that are cheap and don't pay up at the end of the night. Once you get the minimum you can close out the tab. It's probably a lot easier to just pay the $10 cover because you'll find a place to pop a squat. There is seating everywhere. That being said we came up short of the minimum because everyone in my party kept going to the bar to order drinks the whole night. The waitress let us off the hook for the small difference which was nice.

Aside from that the DJ was pretty good; spinning a good mix. The crowd was very mixed as well. Decent ratio of guys to girls. The whole set up with the dance floor and bar in the village underground was sweet. If you don't want that whole scene you can just go upstairs to the lounge area, and chill. Best of both worlds to accomodate your friends. Ben's pizza next door is amazing by the way, and the perfect way to end a really drunk night.

All in all definitely a fun spot. I would come back.

Pros: set up, friendly bouncers, employees, decent crowd

Cons: waitress had a little trouble getting the drinks out which caused my friends to go to the bar (we had over 20 people in our party), annoying drink minimum for parties

celebrated my b-day with a ton of friends here a couple years ago, had an awesome time. THey had a huge selection of beer. The bartenders werent retarted when it came to making different types of drinks, there was decent service, I could actually make it to the edge of the bar and order after midnight! The bartender even hooked me up with some free shots because it was my b-day, really chill place.

Pros: lots of different people, great place to hang out, fun, drinks, girls!

Cons: gets kind of messy and crowded like every other decent bar in nyc on the weekend

Ratings_icons Awesome place for a B-day Party!

redbunny

I had my 25th bday party at the FBPC in late Sept and I had a blast!
PROs:
The Moroccan lounge was roomy enough and gorgeous, making it the perfect place for a large group to hang out. The drinks were great too! The waitress was super friendly and made great and honest suggestions about the drinks too. I usually choose places like this since they are not pretentious and overpriced and you get treated with respect as they realize how important good word of mouth is along with return patrons.
CON: the bathrooms! Its the only thing i can think of. They were tiny and as the line to the ladies room is always long and is right next to the pool tables, you have to avoid getting poked with a pool stick while in line.

Ratings_icons Excellent service, NY bar with no NY attitude

Spahrski

I planned a bachelorette party here in June and the service was fantastic. The party organizer, Gypsee, was very accomodating and incredibly responsive. The music was perfect - good mix of pop/hip hop/dance/old school throughout the night. We were at the downstairs dance club all night. I don't think I sat once. We had plenty of room to spread out in the reserved area. The best part was the price. I researched many of the"hot spots" but quickly learned of $1000/bottle minimums and read reviews about the rude service. At FBP, there was no bottle service required so we could all drink what we want and pay a fair price. Our waitress was attentive. The night could not have been better.

Ratings_icons Great venue for b-day - most horrible DJ in Morrocan Lounge

stopnstare

My husband reserved a table for my big birthday party. The venue was so unique and we had an awesome time. Event planner, Gypsee was great and our waitress was very friendly. Drinks are not stingy on the alcohol either. Overall, we had a blast. One part of FBPC that almost ruined our night was the DJ in the Moroccan Lounge that had the most nastiest attitude towards my guests and almost put a damper on the whole night. My group was the largest group in the entire place, with a mix of Caucasian, Asian, and Latinos. When 2-3 people danced (hardly), he proceeded to tell not just one, but several people in our group that "AMERICANS don't usually dance to this music" and that if we wanted to dance, we can go downstairs. First of all, people in my group were lawyers, accountants, architects, and designers, all professionals who speak PERFECT English. He stated to yet another friend that Americans don't dance to this, therefore, we should stand and just drink. What a offensive and ignorant thing to say!!!!! Also, he told my guests that we cannot sit on the couches' arm because they are expensive antiques. Is he a DJ or couch patrol? If it is such a priceless antique then, maybe the lounge should have chairs that people can sit on without worrying about a DJ telling us where to sit and where not to, especially during a birthday party!!! To boot, when someone put in a request for a song, the "DJ" simply retorted, "I don't take requests." Are you kidding me!!!! He was confrontational, unpleasant be around, and when confronted about his discriminating remarks, he insisted on buying me a drink. A drink is not going to solve the problem because he just insulted half of my guests! Other than this horrible DJ, FBPC was great. I will certainly reserve the Village Underground next time.

Pros: great place for birthday parties

Cons: DJ in the lounge

Ratings_icons Great after work

toyzkill

Bouncers outside are always hassle free. I just wish I could say the same about the doorman and guestlist lady manning the entrance to the basement. They try to be selective as if it's an upscale club. Don't get me wrong, I was granted entrance but only after both looked me up and down, took a moment to think, and then let me through. And surprisingly, the people ahead of me were turned away, even though they had an even girl/guy ratio. Not really sure why they weren't let through but I guess it makes sense because of the uptight "security." I've been here plenty of times in the past but I can't seem to remember when I saw something like this. Place is great for an after work happy hour spot. Upstairs is also great on the weekends if you want to just kick back and relax. The lounge seating and pool table are pluses. If you've never been here, I'd recommend checking it out just stay away Fri/Sat nights and downstairs.

Pros: location, size, diverse crowd

Cons: bathrooms, crowded basement, in need of a reno., UES wannabe

sanusperaquam

So, I had a blast! The Fat Black Pussycat is actually connected to the Village Underground. My friends and I went to both since it was a little too early for people to begin dancing (we got there around 10:30). FBPC has a great lounge area, but like any other Saturday night, it can get way crowded. The only places with free seating was in the couchy-areas, but you have to fork over $25 per person in drinks to sit down and relax (there were about 15 of us standing, and about 20 open spots to sit down but with RESERVED signs). FYI - This applies to both the Village Underground and FBPC. Anywhere you saw the sign 'reserved' wasn't really reserved for those who called ahead (as we discovered through the waitresses) but for people willing to pay $25 a head . My friends and I were a pretty aghast at this (since we intended to put most of our money downstairs in the dance floor), but it is Saturday night and that is probably how they make their money so we def understood. We had to stand in the FBPC for the most-part, but the waitresses were very good-natured about the situation.

The music was REALLY good, and the dance floor at the Village Underground was really pumping. It's a really diverse crowd, so you're going to find some amazing dancers too! Drinks are strong, and bar service is amazingly fast and friendly. It's a great place for a birthday, or just to chill out. If you're going out on the town, be sure to stop off here because it's a really chill and fun place to visit. And we didn't get lame come-on's by creepy guys either!

Pros: great service, chill ambience

Cons: crowds, table service

Ratings_icons Warning!!! Avoid Saturday Nights!!!!

Farahm05

I went to the club part called the Village Underground for my friend's birthday party. We had a VIP section reserved and THANK GOD we did!!! The place is jam packed Saturday nights - and I mean packed to a point where people would not stop coming. There was barely any space to dance. I dont think there was any form of ventilation because there was a haze created from people's sweat alone not to mention their breath. Warning to females wearing high heels to clubs who are use to taking their shoes off while dancing!!! We had a bouncer standing on a sofa watching over us the whole time, making sure no one takes their shoes off...EVER!!! Apparently it's a health hazard - who knew...but it's not a health hazard to pack a room with an occupancy limit of 300 people with 600!!! I mean come on!!! The music was alright - i have heard better but it was a good mix of everything. However, I would not recommend this place for Saturday nights. There are a lot better places in the city to have a great time and great music without having to deal with bouncers not letting you take off your shoes for a minute or the rude people who do not let you pass to go to the bathroom!!! My advice - if you do go keep your elbows up so you can have just a little bit of space for yourself...

Pros: Our waitress Ashley was awesome!!!

Cons: bouncers are ridiculous!!!

Okay, let me start off with the door man. He was great. Not only was he very polite to my ladyfriends, he introduced me to a beautiful asian bartender who hooked me up with beers whenever the waitress was too busy. We had to smoke outside, which is totally OK by me. It gave my friends and I a chance to talk with the doorman and bouncers who, as stated earlier, were really cool dudes. There were a lot of women and we had a good time dancing and talking, before I know it, it's 3 am. I had a really good experience with NY, and the scene.

Pros: Great staff , good prices.

Cons: too far from Virginia

Ratings_icons Fun live music on Wed nights!

alipali

Went here on a wed night, which is much more my style- not crowded, not frantic, but a lot of fun. My friend and i hung out in the lounge are for a couple of hours (half price drinks till 8pm, so the cocktails were only $4.5ea). We snagged a whole couch to ourselves (benefit of a Wed) and were left alone.. You get a big basket of oriental mix/nut nibbles, very nice. Around 10pm we headed downstairs for live music. They operate as two seperate units, so you need to close one tab and start another. Apparently to sit downstairs there's a two drink minimum (wasn't a problem for us). Our server was Justin, a sweetie. The live music was provided by the club's owner's band...they did a mix of covers, had a great collective sense of humour, and sometimes involved the audience. We stayed till after two - again, it was a very relaxed vibe, plenty of space to dance when desired...can't speak for the place on a crowded weekend night, but we'll definetly be back on a Wed!

Pros: Great happy hour, live music downstairs, nibbles with drinks, relaxed atmosphere on weeknights.

Cons: Pretty loud and dark, so not a place for conversation

Ratings_icons Great lounge; fun club

I threw my boyfriend a surprise 27th birthday party in early January on a saturday night at the FBPC and I was so pleased with the way everything turned out. I had a larger than expected party (I believe at least 40 people). However, thanks to months of planning and the helpful assistance of the party manager, Gypsee, the night was a success! I initially had the VIP room (it's private but a bit tight) and 10 chairs in the Moroccan lounge but Gypsee was able to give us the extra space that we needed by accommodating us with another 10 chairs! We were able to shuttle back and forth to the Moroccan lounge ( a nice area to chill and drink) and the Village Underground club (they have great music to get your groove on to) without any extra charge or issues. Prices are very affordable especially if you are buying individual drinks. To be honest, I only had three gripes about the night. The venue was ridiculously packed (that which you cannot help on weekends), we did not have any security preventing outsiders into our private area (something that should be looked into for future parties) and I went over budget having to buy a lot of steeply priced bottles (I prepared for that)!! I wished that I had more than one waitress for the night but honestly, given the circumstance and the large number of people who showed up, the staff at the FBPC did a great job. Our waitress was a sweetheart and made sure that our party got everything they needed. And since everyone who came out really enjoyed themselves, I was very very happy. I would definitely highly recommend this spot if you want to hang out with a nice sized group of friends. It gets a little difficult if you have a large party, but you can make it happen. Just be prepared to spend some dough if your party is pretty big. I'm definitely coming back because my friends cannot stop talking about all the fun they had. And more importantly, my boyfriend was over the moon!!

Pros: great prices, great service (staff and bouncers), nice club and lounge in one place!

Cons: can be packed, college crowd on weekends & needs new bathrooms

Ratings_icons Awesome with minor issues

Pinkgenevive

I had my birthday party on the 16th of Feb and planned to have up to 25-40 people there (RSVPing is a dying art). Communication with the events planner Gypsee went very smoothly and I appreciated all of her assistance in answering my multiple questions over two weeks of planning-our waitress Amber was great and got an extra $100.00 out of me alone added to the gratuity for her hard work-thank you, AMBER for doing such an awesome job.

The vibe of FBPC was very relaxed with an upper class touch-I had the whole back section of the Morrocan lounge reserved which was very cozy, but extremely tight once the party really got going-very dark lighting wise-more candles, pls. HOWEVER, I did have a few issues. We had to fight to keep people out of our area all night long despite it being CLEARLY marked "RESERVED-VIP SECTION"-I personally would be willing to pay extra to have someone there making sure "uninvited" guests are not allowed in-I personally had to ask people to leave the area, especially after going down to dance in the club. If I pay for those tables, I expect them to be utilized by my party only, even if no one from our party is sitting there at the time. Secondly, we had a tiff with one of the bouncers about my birthday cake that luckily, got cleared up by Amber immediately. The gentleman later apologized for his behavior when I saw him again-I suggest better communication between the staff and not barking at people who OBVIOUSLY paid to be there. Third, the bathrooms are a b**** to navigate, especially when the place fills up!

OTHERWISE, I and my party had a great time-the music was great, the drinks were well priced and fantastic and I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely be back. I would recommend not going on a weekend as it gets PACKED to the point of not being able to get around-but that is always a sign of a kickin' place-thank you, FBPC for a great birthday and I look forward to visiting your establishment again!

Pros: Good service and drinks, great staff, gorgeous facility and good music later in the evening

Cons: PACKED, tiny bathrooms, VIP means VIP only please!

I tried to get into the Comedy Cellar last Thursday for Valentine's Day but we missed our reservation. The manager offered to bring us around the corner to their other place the Fat Black Pussycat. Really nice atmosphere and there was a really really great band playing in the downstairs. Turned out to be a great night. Thank you to the Comedy Cellar manager.

Pros: Great Band

Cons: Not a great bathroom. Time for a reno.

Ratings_icons Had a great time

I came last Saturday and had a great time. I loved the huge martiini selections, all the different rooms, and that I got to play pool as well. We ended up staying mostly in the red lounge, which was really nice.

i went here with a few friends after dinner, with pretty high expectations since it had such great reviews, but i left not really seeing what the big deal is. i'm usually not picky with bars and lounges and generally have a good time anywhere i go, but i'm pretty sure i didn't have a good time here. first off, the bouncer seemed to be trying to portray this 'tough guy' image which translated into a rudeness towards me and my friends. so that pretty much started it off. it definitely lost its laidback feeling right then and there. it felt more pretentious if anything. then, inside was SUUUPER crowded and i felt like anywhere we went, we were in someone's way. standing around, getting bumped and pushed gets annoying after a while. we had to stand SOMEWHERE, because there was NOWHERE to sit. all i wanted to do was sit with my friends from college, whom i haven't seen since we graduated a few months ago, and we couldn't even do that. guess you have to get there really early if you plan on sitting anywhere. drinks were strong, i'll give them that. but other than that, i really don't see what the big deal is with this place. maybe i went on a bad night? i don't know. we had one drink and left to find another bar.

Pros: strong drinks

Cons: crowded

I have spent many nights at the Fat Black and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The drinks are strong and there's a variety of environments to roam through. Last August I arranged to have my sister's 21st birthday in the VIP balcony. There was no additional charge and we had a wonderful time even though we were all different ages. The servers and extremely nice and helpful and the drinks are what they should be, far from watered down. I have sent many many people here and none were dissapointed, even fellow Columbia students and out-of-towners. Mondays are great because there's kareoke upstairs and live band music downstairs. Print out the drink ticket online for half-price drinks.

Pros: very affordable, great staff, strong drinks, beautiful Moroccan lounge

Cons: a bit crowded on weekends and I've seen them close off the Moroccan lounge for private parties

This is the place that I have been waiting for!! I can leave my boyfriend upstairs to play pool and I can go down stairs to dance where they have these old burlesque videos playing on the TV screens it just makes you lose your inhibitions ( LOL). And the drinks are yummy and strong (that helps too)!!!

Pros: dance,dance,dance

Cons: none, none, none

This place is a lot of fun. good music cheap drinks and MOST people who work there are nice. but as a regular customer who spent alot of my money there over time, i became disappointed when they blamed incidents that happened there on me (other people drinking too much, other patrons randomly saying stuff to me). guess what, the type of people this place attracts beg for drama, they couldve asked me what happened, after the amount of times i was there. but apparently that was too much trouble. there are more mature places to go without so much drama, allll over ny, and ill suggest such places to my friends whenever this place comes up. very disappointed and wish i could get all my money back.

Hey let me tell you something about this place. Great atmosphere, great music, great decor! I've been here several times and always felt just as good coming out as I did going in. The staff is great, they have never given me a bad attitiude and always willing to help. Felt more like my own personal hangout pad! I highly recommend it! Also a great first date place! Fellas trust me when I say she'll be impressed!

Pros: 3 different areas to play in, music and general ambience was great

Cons: As any place would have theirs is the bathrooms! Not very comfortable, toilets could have been cleaner
