Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
On the surface, this bar appears to be just another noisy, crowded after-work or after-school scene. But move beyond the bar's cramped front room and find a casual crowd unwinding in a lively space with wooden booths, quirky wall art and mini table-side TVs. For the real surprise, slip behind a side curtain into a lavish bohemian lounge where would-be couples sink into inviting velvet couches amid Moroccan lanterns.

The Draw
Plasma TVs, dartboards, Web-access terminals, a jukebox, a pool table: There are enough diversions to occupy even the shortest attention span. The drink selections--beer, cognac, martinis--suit a variety of tastes, and raspberry liqueurs give the bar's namesake drink an appropriately robust flavor. While more obvious choices exist for meeting people and kicking back (or making out), this split-personality feline is ideal for those who want to keep their options open.

Key Points

  • 4 Rooms - 3 DJ's - 31 Martinis
  • Birthdays & Private Parties
  • Dance at Village Underground

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Wander into the bar between 4pm and 8pm, Monday through Thursday, for half-price happy hour; on Fridays (during the same hours) enjoy $3 well drinks and drafts.
  2. The Extras - The cozy loft with its pillow-laden wraparound couch can be reserved for intimate parties.

Ratings_icons Had a Great Time

dgoldsmith156

I saw the place on CitySearch and went with my friends last weekend. Very fun and friendly vibe. We had a nice couch section in the lounge, but later went downstairs to dance. We really like the drink specials and variety of rooms. Waiter was very friendly as well.

Pros: vibe, friendly staff

Cons: bathrooms small.

Ratings_icons Loud and crowded, Morraccan is nice decor

payton80

At first sight this place is almost a hole in the wall, as is everything in NYC. However when you walk up there is a large intimidating man standing at the door talking on his phone, he puts his hands up in front of you and requests ID's. Though taken aback by this rude behavior, we comply (my husband and I). I must admist we are not generally the club going type, so the loud music (becomes ridiculously loud as the night progresses) and the packed as tight as sardines feel was not pleasant in any sense, especially when you are trying to have a conversation with someone which must be discouraged since you can't hear anything other then the loud music. The decor was nice though in the Morroccan room, drinks were ok, other then that I can't say I have anything else to say about this place, except it is not a great place to have people over for conversations or meeting. If you plan on doing a party, go here afterwards to dance and have fun, it is not a relax and have a good time place, more of a get drunk and get pushed around place (by their own wait staff!)

Pros: Nice Morraccan Decor

Cons: Patrons that go there ruin the decor, crowded, loud.

Ratings_icons FBPC... Excellent Place To Have A Party

imso0wicked

I actually threw a party for my boyfriend back in August and we had a GREAT time. Heather the events coordinator was especially great she answered all my questions and concerns and everything turned out PERFECT. Get there early it does get CROWDED... but everyone dancing makes it all the more fun. Music is great, a nice selection of new and old school hip hop, R& B and pop. Drink prices were defintely reasonable and the staff is EXCELLENT. We were able to come early and make several different trips to drop off supplies needed for the night and our waitress checked in on us to make sure everything was ok. The VIP area was a little small for my group but other than that we had a blast. Plan on having my birthday party there!!!

Pros: Excellent staff, Decent drinks, Great Music

Cons: Crowded

Ratings_icons Good Place to have a B-day

rmello25

Had my b-day party at the fat black pusscat, and the place was awesome. Very diverse, the three environments was great, would definitely comeback. The bill at the end of the night was very reasonable. I actually thought it would be more, so the place rocked. One minor problem was that we reserved two tables for 23 people in the Moroccan lounge and when we got there we only had a table for 10 people to sit. But since most of us just stand talking and dancing it was not a big deal.

Pros: Dancing, hang out, atmosphere

Ratings_icons Excellent Customer Service

gerelys

I booked a small party of twelve people last Saturday and have to admit that the service was great. We had reservations on the main floor and then changed them for downstairs and they had no problem with the change. We loved the music and how particular the entrance was of who they let in. The waitress was always checking if we needed anything and if everthing was ok. We felt very comfortable....although the mojitos from the first floor tasted better then the ones from the bottom floor. That would be the only thing. They prepared my drink specifically the way I asked them to. I had a great time and will go back very soon. I do have to say that they have a great host...event planner...she did a verygood job. Fat Black Pussycat is a real great place to celebrate your birthday! Thanks a bunch!

catwoman777

nothing compares to the fat black. the mood is noir and the bouncers cool. to those that come often your treated like old friends. music is always perfect never had an off night. dj is sweet, playing your favorities. drinks off charts and prices just right. its great to have a spot to go to that is top noch and the cover charge and drinks are reasonable. i have met some people because of fat black that have touched my world. some of the phatest souls are at fat black. if you find your thinking that you should have got that number from that beautiful lady or handsome man no dought just meander back some friday or saturday night and you just might see them again for once you go to the fat black, it will drag you back, she's tailed you good like a cat to string, addicted! so ladies slink your way down in your favorite sacha london heels and mind bending outfits and boys get sharp and edgey cause the cat has class. and go lounge in the upper deck and sip swanky cocktails and slink down to the moody tunnel to dance the night away to the best sounds in ny.go fat black you will never go back.

Pros: atmosphere,music,drinks,cover charge

Cons: can't get enough

Ratings_icons best place for a party. great music

princessporkie

I had my bday here and it was great. they played good hiphop and r&b music. My friends were able to dance and have fun. There is no bottle requirement to reserve a table so that was good. Most places in nyc have bottle requirements to reserve a table which suckz but this lounge doesnt. the lounge was very nice. the seats were comfy and the drinks were good. they were not watered down like some places and they were decent price. The only thing is that it gets really crowded after midnight. I would definitely throw a party here again.

Pros: fun lounge. place of good drinks with great atmosphere and music

Cons: crowded

Ratings_icons Terrific door policy! Guys if you dont like if get out of dodge!

nymodelgirl

I as a rule like to go these place that dont lets groups of guys in without girls if makes me feel safe. I see these reviews people write guys not getting in etc etc. That is to prevent trouble at the bar and lawsuits as a result of trouble wether it because fights or sexual trouble. Guys you have understand they dont pay the bouncers enough to deal with that and nor would they want to. Guys you know the drill dont coming crying and moaning, this is NYC you know how it works here and why it works the way it works if you dont like it you have options get out doge, simple as that but please dont moan they are not going to chanage their policy to suit you, you must realize this.

Keep up the good work FBPC

Ratings_icons Great Time

dgolden56

We had a great party at the Pussycat. Everything was just as promised. Heather was great setting us up and checking on us. She even followed up with us on Monday to make sure we had a good time. Our waitress Sarah was beyond friendly. Drinks were big and tasty.

We loved the atmosphere, the crowd and the fact that we got to use all three rooms. Really loved the decor in the lounge room especially.

Pros: 3 rooms, attentive management

Cons: upstairs bathroom need renovating

Ratings_icons Not a good experience

tinkerbelle0328

bad experience here. complained to the owner and he was very apologetic and also took immediate action which was much appreciated. I have been here before and it was fun.....I'm sure this place is typically a much better experience, unfortunately the staff ruined it for me this time.

Pros: cheap drinks, attentive bartenders

Cons: rude bouncers/DJ's with big egos

It's a shame this place has so many good reviews on here - maybe they hired someone to write them that is all I can figure. I heard about this place a while ago and my friends and I were in the area so we decided to check it out...BIG MISTAKE. Took us forever to get in....Tinkerbelle you are right, bouncers and staff have HUGE egos; putting you in a bad mood before you even get in!! One was starting an argument with me. You'd think this place was some high class hot spot with how they treat the people in line. The crowd was pretty trashy, the place is pretty dumpy. Dude letting people in to where the dancing was - completely rude and ridiculous, only letting girls in - which would be great for the guys, except they wouldn't let any in! Find another place, despite the intriguing name this place is really no good. Not worth your time - go somewhere else trust me.

Pros: cheap, stiff drinks

Cons: rude bouncers, too crowded to move, don't let guys in downstairs

These guys got it right. I met up with a few friends there for some drinks the other night and had a great time. We totally didn't realize that they have live music there. So much fun. We went there before I guess it was on a weekend and there was a DJ downstairs so I was a little dissapointed that there was a band but they were great. I will totally be back

Ratings_icons Excellent & Friendly Staff, Cool Lounge, Good Drinks

dundesign

I planned a Girls Night Out party in the Moroccan Lounge this weekend. What a fabulous set-up! It was the perfect space from the swaying lanterns above to the plush yet funky table setting. There was even an antique style thrown chair for the bride to sit at. The staff was incredible. I can't say enough about them. They were very cool and fun. They went above and beyond for our group. We all agreed that it was the BEST SERVICE that we have EVER experienced in NYC! There was definitely a great crowd and a good vibe going on there too. There is so much to do there but we just stayed at our table and had a blast. If you have a large party 8-10 people... I would suggest reserving a table a buying a bottle. It's well worth it.

Pros: Awesome Staff, Perfect Lounge Space

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Great bar, great staff

msrsx

I went last night with a group of friends for my birthday and reserved a table in the Moroccan Lounge which was beautiful. Everyone was so friendly from the bouncers to the party coordinators. This is a great place to party if you're sick of the pretentious velvet roped bars and lounges in the city that treat you like a you're a nobody if your not a celebrity. There was such a laid-back vibe in the entire bar and my friends and I hung out in the lounge as well as the club downstairs. Thank you Heather and Jennifer for taking customer service to the next level and our waitress Sara for being such a sweetheart! We had so much fun and we are definitely coming back very soon.

Pros: A+ service, good music, cheap/strong drinks, great atmosphere

Cons: bathrooms could use a makeover

Ratings_icons Always a great time

jriiii

I've always loved this place. Between the great (huge) martinis and the fun dancing at the Village Underground, it's really a pretty unusual vibe. Great mix of atmospheres and the staff is really friendly. If this club was in the Meat Packing District, I think it would be the busiest one on the strip. Great mix of atmospheres.

Pros: reasonable prices, trendy, friendly

Cons: poor food selection

Ratings_icons Usually pretty good

glaxtitute

I've been coming here for a few years now. Usually we always have a good time. The happy hour special of 1/2 price drinks is a really good deal... yummy flavored martinis at only 4 bucks a pop! Only crappy thing I can really say about the place is there's no where to really sit unless you get there early and can snag a seat at the bar (which then you have to deal with annoying bar patrons constantly hanging over you with their money and screaming their drink order to the bartender) or if you make a reservation for one of the tables in the back. The last time I was there we were chased like crazy from every empty table we attempted to sit at. And none of the tables had a "reserved" sign on them. Got to be annoying so we were forced to stand and get jockeyed around by the hoards of people in the joint. Music is usually decent and I think the DJ is pretty good about requests too. I did have one bad experience with the bouncer for the sister club "Underground" right next door/connected inside. We (mix of guys and gals) got there before 3 of our guy friends did so we told them we'd meet them inside. However, once my 3 friends got there, apparently the bouncer wouldn't let them in for the simple fact that they had no chicks with them. I actually had to come upstairs and talk to the bouncer and vouch for my 3 friends that the rest of our group (including chicks) were downstairs! The bouncer was incredibly rude to me when I was perfectly polite (and NOT drunk) and actually had the nerve to say to me "well if you'll let me explain...", which is all i had asked him to do in the first place, with his hands all up in my face! He eventually let my friends in but it really left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't been back since that night a few months ago. My recommendation would be to stay at the FBPC upstairs and avoid the club downstairs unless you want to deal with over-zealous bouncers who think this is the meat-packing district or something!

Pros: Great happy hour deal, close to the subway

Cons: over-zealous bouncer at the Underground

Ratings_icons Awesome for weekday happy hour and dancing on the weekends.

greeneyedpea

Been going there at least twice a month for the past year (in the summer more like 2-3xweek). Always had a great time. Staff is extremeley nice. Bartenders pour nice drinks. You can't go wrong with the 4-8pm 1/2priced drinks happy hour. On the weekends there's a $5&$10 cover (ladies and gents respectively) for the Village Underground which is a club downstairs with good music, and a co-ed bathroom, which is fun and different :D. Mixed crowd of NYU students, after-work suits, and g-fabulous crowds on the weekend.
***To get in to the FBPC they not only check your ID, but also take a picture.***
Great atmosphere. The lounge part is great, but its really hard to get a couch for yourself, I guess you'd have to get there between 4-5pm...
You just can't go wrong with that place.

Pros: happy hour, great drinks, HUGE beer selection

Cons: can get ridiculously crowded

Ratings_icons Great place to meet friends and drink

Was there this past Saturday, never been there, and all I can say is this is a great place to meet up with friends. I submitted a request to book a table, management are very prompt/punctual in getting back to your requests and had no problems. Our waitress was very attentive and I believe it was Heather one of the managers checked in with us to make sure there were no problems. This place is very well run, great place to drink, good mixture of people, and I look forward to coming back.

I've been here for a few happy hours and had a lot of fun. The bar/pub area is kind of loud and roudy, the lounge is chill with cool waiters, and downstairs you can dance and people watch from the couch.

Pros: Cool atmosphere, good-looking people

Cons: Really loud on weekends

Ratings_icons You're in for a great time. Period!!!

coco_rumor

This was my first visit to this spot after reading the reviews on here and let me tell you, they are not lying. This place is AWESOME!!! Went here for a Friday happy hour. One itty-bitty con is that drinks were NOT 1/2 price on the entire bar as advertised. Instead it was $3 for select beers, rum and vodka. Regardless, $3?? Good enough for me. Get there early to grab a comfy seat in the lounge section while grooving to R&B and oldies. Then, when you're wasted, move to the bar area to order their cheap but REALLY GOOD finger foods. DJ in the bar area was playing back to back 80 and 90's hits that will have everyone grooving. Haven't heard great music like that in a very long time. Definitely one of NYC's happy hour gems.

Pros: Ambiance, music, happy hour, food

I went to the Fat black pussycat with 8 of my friends on Friday night. We reserved seating in the Morrocan Lounge area. It was beautifully decorated with red couches and lamps etc. Very intimate feeling. Because we had reserved seating in the lounge they waived our covers for the dance club downstairs. My friends were able to go downstairs and dance, then come back and relax at our table, meanwhile I was playing pool in the next room(regular bar feel) with a few others from my party. We had a 2 drink minimum each for our table, but that was easily done because our waiter was attentive and the cocktail and beer lists were huge, very impressive and reasonably priced!
We had the whole night's entertainment in one establishment.
I love this Place and will definitely have my next gathering there!

Pros: lots to do, ambience, cocktails, service

I really liked the way I was treated at this place. The staff and management were exteremely attentive to my group. We liked all three rooms, but wound up staying in the Village Underground for most of the night. Everybody was friendly, (even the bouncers).

I have been here more than a few times the music, crowd and atmosphere was always good. Until I tried to book a party. Booking a party is hard enough without all of the drama. Hopefully in the future they will see that for booking a party they should be a little less demanding, and more accomodating. I thought long and hard about this and decided that if I did return to this establishment I wouldn't book a party. I guess it's who you know wherever you go.

Pros: Good

smiley_in_nyc

I went to the Fat Black for the umpteenth time last week and I had a blast! I was with one of my friends and we were celebrating his friend?s b-day. It was so much fun. Of course we took advantage of the drink specials. Who wouldn?t? The selection is HUGE! The service was a little slow but that was only because it got crowded. The music was great? a little bit of everything. I asked the DJ at the bar area to play my request and he said I would have to wait til the downstairs (lounge/club) opened but the next thing I knew, he was playing what I requested. I danced at the bar? it was great ? AS ALWAYS! I think this is my favorite hang out spot so far! I will defiinitey come here again and again and again! TO THE STAFF: Keep up the good work! :D

Pros: Great music, happy hour, good service, 3 rooms

Cons: small bathroom, can get very crowded

The spot has many room. The first one is ok, the second one looks like an old living room.. But this is a good thing, its cozy, dim lighting perfect for a date. The downstairs is lounge club. Even if you're at FBPC you will still have to pay an admission fee to get it. On weekends it is really packed. It is a lounge/club. Many comfortable couches along the wall. Great atmosphere has the feeling of a club but is not as big as one which makes it a lot better.

I hosted a party at fat black pussycat last saturday and all of my guests had a wonderful time. There were 15 of us and we had two tables in the lounge area. The ambience was great, drinks were reasonably priced, and our server was very helpful and friendly. Most of us chilled in the lounge area while a couple went downstairs to the nightclub. There's something for everyone at Fat Black Pussycat and that's why it's such a great place for parties. Will definitely recommend this place to my friends. Thanks!

Really nice idea having 3 different rooms to go through. My party kind of split up and fouind their various niches. Went there on a Thursday night not expecting much. In entering the place, I noticed the great music that was being played (Pop, Rock and R&B) and knew this was going to be a good night. The waitress was a little slow in noticing we were there, but that was to be expected since it was a bit crowded. My friend and I ordered a Corona each. When the bill came the night got even sweeter!!! Two Coronas cost us only $4.50!!! That's right folks ... $4.50 for the two!!!! You couldn't take the smiles off of our faces! :-D Great music, nice crowd (mixed and all ages), cheap drinks (atleast the beer) and regular finger food...this is certainly a place to go to when you don't want to spend alot of money, and want to have a good time.

Pros: Cheap beers, Great music, Nice crowd

Cons: Tiny and uncomfortable seating, Very grease finger food menu

murph7989

I have been coming to this place for many years now. BY far the best place to hang out and have a good time on a friday or Saturday night in the village. Even thursday happy hours are hopping. The atmosphere is a bit calm to begin the night and picks up as the night progresses. The only negative I have about this place is being thrown out the last time I attended. I was the DD that night and was thrown out due to mistaken identity. I discussed this with the bouncer and he said he MIGHT have been wrong. However, did not let me back in. I brushed this siuation aside becasue I still love the place but this was a BAD expereince for me that night.

To write and tell you that this place is one of my absolute favorites!!! I do admit I rarely use Citysearch and this is the first time I have ever written a "review" of a place but after reading some other comments, I felt it was my duty to say that I come back again and again for the atmosphere of the Fat Black and have referred numerous friends and colleagues to do the same. This place is for people who like to have fun and obviously not for those who find themselves so "above" a dress code or for those who have a fear of crowds and people and enjoying themselves (as some of these reveiewers seem to). For a good time, call the Fat Black :)

Pros: great music, diverse crowd

Cons: Beatniks, downers stay away

Ratings_icons Eclectic variety; fun, diverse, friendly crowd

lazarus7

Very nice place, there's something for everyone here. There are several areas to suit your mood: the cozy lounge area with several sections that can accommodate small groups(6-10), the pool hall area, the table/booth area for small groups who want to chill and order drinks, and the dance club downstairs which was playing smooth R&B/hip-hop when I was there last friday night. I don't think I even saw the whole club. In the lounge area where I spent the most time, the music was a mix of top 40, with some mainstream jazz, latin, and hip-hop.

The crowd is semi-upscale, mostly young profesionals, ethnically diverse, and relatively friendly.

Drinks are reasonably priced ($6 vodka, $2 redbull, $6 beers)

Bottom line: Variety, friendly young professional crowd, decent staff, reasonable prices, decent music.

Pros: friendly crowd, great variety, reasonable prices

Cons: none come to mind...

I just celebrated my 25th B-day at Fat Black Pussycat on Saturday in the Village Underground, and it was absolutely great. The drinks are very reasonable, the music keeps you dancing all night long, and the service is great. You must try the Fat Black Martini. It's best to reserve tables because this place fills up fast and you won't be able to find a place to sit. Thank you to Kristin for helping make my b-day one to remember, and to Katie, my waitress, for her impecable service and patience with the guys in my group.

It was my 22nd Birthday on Saturday, I was going to school in new orleans and have recently been relocated, 6 of my friends made the trip to NYC to party with me, we are all seniors in college. Then some friends from NYC (around 18) met up with us. It was absolutely by far the best time ever, we had two tables in the downstairs lounge. Our waitress was the cutest thing ever! I couldn't have asked for a better party scene. The DJ is phenominal. It is definetly worth checking out! All of us are still talking about it!

Pros: waitress, music, atmosphere

I had a BLAST!!!! This was the best party I ever had. I would like to send out a BIG kiss and hug to Kristin and the whole staff at the BFPC exspeacially the bouncers who showed me lots of love. All my friends had a good time, and the D.J. was doing the damn thing I loved when he shouted out Happy Birthday to me after evey couple of songs. I can't wait to go back. I might have to go out there tonight........

Pros: Fun, great after work, good music

Ratings_icons Had a nice time

Went here with a sizable group. Nice atmosphere. Went down to the dance floor area and we were able to have a table without being forced to order bottles. We ordered individual drinks and did not have to worry about a minimum so that was good. The bartender screwed up two rounds of drinks but they made up for it with complimentary shots. The cocktail waitress was really sweet. Music was fun and the people were good.

Pros: fun music

Cons: Crappy, bartender, downstairs

Ratings_icons Where did the time go?

clubhop79

I came in one night at about 7:00 PM and didn't find my way out until 4:00 AM. During that time I had some great martinis, went dancing downstairs at the Underground club, shot some pool upstairs, and relaxed on the couches with a girl I met. Pretty cool time!

Pros: Variety

Bar on the left hand side will serve up great martinis that don't cost $12 like at other bars... the first area: college setting, bar, wooden tables and benches, pool tables, dart boards, etc. Good place for a few to get together for beer. THEN, there's the left side: lounge, velvety couches, tables for large groups, better to have cocktails, different music, different vibe from first room If you're not happy with that, go downstairs and it's a large dance floor, good lights, have shots at the bar, dance with a good diverse crowd, mix of white/black/european/few south asians... maybe a handful of asian people (besides the bartender) on a good day. crowd is both young and old. But overall, good dance, 3 different vibes, all put into one bar. Good after work place on a friday night! or while you're bar hopping.. =)

Pros: diverse, dancing, various vibes

Cons: need more hot guys

I've had two parties at the Fat Black, one a birthday party for me and my friends, and the other was an office party. Both went perfectly. Every single employee in the place was friendly! Great DJ too.

Pros: Different Rooms

Cons: Crowded
