FBP is the illest, the drink prices are very cool and the drinks are quite "healthy"--unbeatable. Very mixed crowd and atmosphere. the bar area with pool table and darts is good for chillin with friends, The lounge is a great first date spot and the Rumor plays great club music, (hip hop, latin, reggae, r&B, pop). The bouncers and staff are pretty cool, but the only problem is if you're pants are too baggy they won't let you in, that's BS, but other wise, kick ass bar...
Pros: inexpensive, no cover
Cons: no single men, no baggy jeans

The party was great! I was one of 6 Geminis who got together for a good time at the FBP. We reserved a section in the lounge and mostly stayed there all night. At times people went to go dance at the club downstairs. That was fun too. The background music in the lounge was goodchill vibe. Service was goodgot in with no problems! like I said before, we had a great time! definitely would go back again for a group party.
Pros: cool lounge, good music, fast drink service
Posted 06/15/05
Not much of a bar scene sort of person so I was pleasently surprised by this place. Went in early and it was quite loud but the place chills down and becomes more enjoyable after the lounge opens up. Definetly try their "fat black pussycat" drink...it's the best drink I ever had. Cherry bomb and apple pie are also quite good. The lounge itself was well designed and relaxing....a definite plus if you're thinking about taking that significant other there, highly romantic. Get there early to avoid the rush.
Pros: Great drinks, prices, atmosphere, people

Been coming for years and I still come back for more. Keep it up

FBC is one of my favorite places in NYC. You can't beat the prices for happy hour, and then not having to leave to go to another place to dance to a DJ since they've added Rumour's downstairs, is fantastic! Highly Highly Recommended

I recently visited the fat black and had booked a party through Kristin who was so accomidating in every way. We had a great time, what a great place all three rooms were amazing from the music, to the speciality martinis right down to the staff who were very pleasent and helpful.

I love this place. When you have no idea what you feel like doing whether it be just hanging out in a bar playing pool/darts, or relaxing in a cozy lounge, or dancing at a club all night long. I strongly suggest this place it has all three you can make up your mind when you get there. What a great idea the owner is a genius!!
Posted 02/28/05
We had our friends birthday party here last week in the VIP balcony. The service was great, and the vibe was too. Thanks Kristin!
Pros: Accomodating
Posted 02/25/05
After hearing such great reviews, I chose Fat Black Pussycat as a venue for a birthday party and I was very disappointed, when neither name I gave were on the guest list & my friends had trouble getting in. Otherwise the place was alright, but wouldn't recommend it if you're trying to reserve for a party!!!
Posted 02/24/05
Thanks guys, I had my party and you guys really took care of us.
Posted 01/26/05
I've been coming here for a long time, and I always have a good time. I can't tell you exactly why, but there some magic to this place.
Posted 01/25/05
Best bar in the Village. There's always a nice crowd, and there's nothing they don't have.
Posted 01/17/05
Really is one of the best and least pretentious lounges. Despite simple bar interior, the lounge that opens at night is roomy and extremely cozy. Jazz playing downstairs at adjoined Village Vanguard. Happy hour is one of the best in the city, half off all drinks-had some of my expensive fav brews. The music is adequate, aiming to please all with mostly radio and bar standards. Darts and pool also cool.
Pros: Happy hour, lounge, atmosphere
Posted 11/26/04
This was a really nice first date spot. Their martinis are strong and had me feeling very nice after the first one. The atmosphere here is great! The wooden benches tend to make your butt hurt but the lounge area with all of the comfy seating makes up for it.
Pros: Drinks, Prices, Atmosphere
Posted 11/23/04
The Fat Black Pussycat is a fabulous place to get real drinks at a great price during happy hour. The drinks are just as strong as a normally priced drinks (if not stronger). So if you've had a rough week/day, FBP will hit the spot. Other patrons are cool too - its definitely worth the trip. The only problem is, it being such a reasonably priced place for happy hour - there isn't enough staff to tend to everyone.
Pros: Happy Hour $$, Cool People, Space Downstairs
Cons: , Upstairs bar, More staff needed
Posted 11/03/04
Drinks were very reasonable - about $6.00. We went to go dancing, but ended up making out in the lounge. Service was great and friendly.
Posted 08/10/04
There's no admission charge. Average drinks are $9.50. They have very good martini's. Three levels and a small VIP room. The lower level has lots of chairs, tables, and louges to sit and chat and space for dancing. They also have "ladies night" where women receive a ticket upon entering the club/bar and get 1/2 price on drinks. Enough space for dancing. It gets crowded around 12 midnight until 2am on the dance floor. Martini's are good size drinks.

I had several people meet me here to celebrate my birthday and had a great time! I LOVE the lounge with all the funky velvety couches and throne chairs...TOTALLY different feeling than the main bar when you walk in. There is even a dance club downstairs (though one of my friends wasn't allowed there because he had sandals on). Their martinis are a GREAT value..and they have tons of fun ones to choose from.
Pros: ambience, martinis, inexpensive
Posted 07/05/04
We had a fantastic time dancing downstairs and playing pool upstairs. Great club and great bar!!!
Pros: Pool, Door Guy
Posted 07/03/04
My friends and I checked this place out when we saw it was #1 in the CitySearch Poll. We had the best time. The manager must have like the way my friends looked, becuase he bought my girlfriends and me free drinks in the "club" room downstairs. Great female D.J. and vibe. Great place for a varied night out.
Pros: Dancing, Rooms, Martinis
Posted 06/18/04
On the weekends the place is jumpin', but gettin' in the place on a Friday or a Saturday if you are a SINGLE MALE, is a world class bitch. The bouncer has put the force field up on many a guy becuase supposedly there's a female shortage in the city. If you get in you'll have a blast, but when a bar starts turning people down because they are single guys it is getting way to full of itself, and that is a big time strike against it
Pros: good atmosphere, great location
Cons: , crowded
Posted 06/08/04
Great service, quality drinks, and a cool decor... this place has it all. Went with some friends, and everyone in the place was super friendly. We felt like it was our own neighborhood bar, and we had never been here before.
Pros: Martini Menu, fun crowd(sat night), music
Posted 06/02/04
We brought 20 people for a B-Day party in their VIP room. Great service and drinks. We got to go dancing downstairs, while some of us played pool upstairs. The hostess was great and made sure we had everything we needed. Thanks CitySearch.
Pros: PRIVATE ROOM!
Posted 04/25/04
WE love the Fat Black Pussycat....everyone is so friendly. I have friends from out of town who request the Fat Black when they are here. And the drinks are awesome!
Pros: atmosphere, prices, comfort

Too bad this place is getting bad ratings since Ive been there before and liked it. The place is awful from the rude bouncer with the tightest suit on to the awful music in the lounge! I called the bar earlier to reserve an area for our large group celebrating a birthday and they had said that it was first come first serve. We got there early and got the first seats available. Since we arrived, we were treated awful. The bouncer was on our backs all night while we were casually hanging out like everyone else there, causing ABSOLUTELY no trouble. He claimed that the waitress was fired because she couldnt handle the group. LIES because the waitress was still serving drinks while we were talking to the bouncer. Not worth the trip.
Pros: none
Posted 04/14/04
The place is set up pretty nice, however...they have no food and they won't let you eat any in the lounge room. If you do get up to go eat, the bouncer will try to give your seat away. If you are there and get up, the bouncer will try yo give your seat away. If you are there too long, the bouncer will try to give your seat away. The music needs major improvemnet in the lounge room too.
Pros: good spot, good crowd, big drinks
Cons: , bad music in lounge, uptight security

I was at the fat black pussycat on Saturday celebrating my cousins b-day with over 40 people. We got the back room all to ourselves. Got there at 8pm and celebrating and drinking till midnight. We lite up a small cake and the bouncers kick us out. The cake was visible for all to see for over 5 hours and We were all spending dough and taking care of everyone. Do not go here!!!!!!!! Its a waste of money and trhey dont even comp you free drinks after spending so much.

Strong, well-priced drinks and comfortable atmosphere make this a Village mainstay but the extra attraction is the awesome music! Playing everything from the latest hip-hop to 80s rock, the DJ is versatile and creative; I'm looking forward to being able to dance. The crowd ranges from trendy club-goers to young profesionals to suburbanites hungry for a night on the town; this diverse group makes for interesting bar conversations.
Pros: Drinks, Music, Atmosphere
Posted 03/12/04
isn't that enough for you to try this place out?!?
But seriously, lots of fun to be had at this place. The drinks alone make it a great spot in the city. By far, they make the best and strongest drinks in the city. The martinis are just killer...the bartenders probably throw at least 6 or 7 shots of liquor into each one. When ordering, upgrade the Chocolate Lovers with Stoli Vanilla and Bailey's...only a $1 extra.
Just a great spot to pregame and get your drink on!
Pros: awesome drinks, good crowd, awesome drinks

This place is more of a frat lounge, but with pop music, which is not the atmosphere I expected, but still a good place for after work drinks... Grease-monkey bartender was cocky & unnecessarily rude when I ordered my signature drink (which I have ordered at several places, and always been greeted with interest and good service by any other bartender in the city). Oddly intimidating bouncer at door for such a casual bar. Great happy hour bargain & nice mix of people.
Pros: Good Happy Hour, Good diverse crowd
Cons: , Corny music
Posted 02/22/04
I love this place!!! great music, super great ambiance and down to earth people!
Posted 01/24/04
This is definately the best village bar. Great happy hour, great drinks, and great D.J.
Pros: Friendly, Big Drinks
Cons: Crowded
Posted 01/19/04
Really cool place. Lots of different atmospheres. Really nice VIP room, and dancing in the basement. Will be back.
Pros: Parking, Reasonable Prices
Posted 01/13/04
The old Kettle ain't what she used to be. The darts are crowded now with progress. Gone are the connections to folk city.
Pros: location
Cons: atmosphere
Posted 12/29/03
This place is great for happy hr. Drinks 1/2 price from 4-8pm?? Can that get any better? AND they give you decent sized drinks, none of this shot-glass sized drinks for happy hour. Nice, large bar with different rooms. Only problem is, I feel they could use more than one bartender, which is often the case. My only complaint is I've had to wait quite a while to get a bartender's attention. (I end up order 2 drinks at a time at that price!)
Pros: CHEAP, good for groups, fun music
Cons: need more bartenders
Posted 12/25/03
The pussycat is most uinique bar I know. So many different atmospheres, and now they have a dance club in the basement. Very cool
Posted 12/18/03
If you go during happy hour the "Pucker Sampler" (6 fruit flavored Martinis) is $15!!!!!!!!!!!!! While you nosh on fruit martinis, you can jam to a melee of 80's videos & old school movies. The crowd is also lively $ friendly, get there early so you can get a table the spot will get full quick!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: Inexpensive
Posted 11/18/03
This place has 3 areas: a bar in the front, picnic tables for dining in the back, which is next to a lounge area with couches and huge comfy chairs. It gets completely packed early with students from the the Village. They play 80s and 90s pop that people get down to in the bar area. Reasonable priced drinks and the place can be fun if you don't mind being shoulder to shoulder with the NYU set. If you're over 25, then you should probably check out other places cause you'll almost like a grandfather to the 22 year old crowd.
Pros: Reasonable Prices, Happening
Cons: Very Crowded Early
Posted 11/13/03
Always a great time there...chocolate martini is to die for, and the other drinks are good too. The DJ rocks--he puts everyone in a good mood there. Crowd is unpretentious and fun-loving and there is usually some interesting viewing material on the TV screens. Def a great place to start your night.
Pros: Great drinks, Fun crowd, Great bartenders
Posted 10/28/03
Found it on Citysearch. The review called it perfectly. I think it's the nicest lounge in the city. Who knew? Great D.J. as well.
Posted 10/12/03
This is really great place, but get a seat. It gets very crowded, but if you get a couch or a table you'll be fine.
Pros: Fun, Mixed
Cons: CROWDED
Posted 08/11/03
We had a large group and like that we could find a place to all sit together in the lounge. Waitress was friendly. Like the music in the main room better.
Pros: Seating, Service
Posted 08/05/03
A lot of different atmospheres combined. Like it because it wasn't very typical. DJ was good but could have taken some chances.
Pros: Mixed atmospheres, Nice drinks
Posted 07/31/03
That's what I had, cool DJ and nice drinks and atmosphere. Friends brought me - would go back. Also, really nice couch lounge.
Cons: crowded
Posted 07/22/03
Friendly and relaxed. I liked the different rooms. I think they should open the lounge room earlier.
Pros: Prices, martinis
Posted 07/15/03
I went there this past week and the place was mobbed. We waited too long for our drinks, but when we complained they extended the happy hour for our table for an extra half an hour! They explained that they were not expecting to be as crowded as they were and were understaffed. The place is really nice, and at least they made it up to us.
Pros: 3 rooms, music
Posted 07/11/03
I went to this bar for the first time in December and I loved it, I've went back to NY in April and July and The Fat Black Pussycat was my first stop and will be each time I'm in NY. The Staff is cool and so are the people that go there, the music selection is great because they play a good mix. Its a good place to go hang out with some friends or just with that one (sometimes special) person.
-- Z from Orlando, Fl
Pros: The Martinis, Music, Atmosphere
Cons: front is lil crowded
Posted 07/09/03

Pros: affordable, friendly, good atmosphere
