I love this place for a late night bite to eat after a concert or show. The bustling atmosphere, great service and excellent food keeps me coming back.

I didn't mind it being the noisiest restaurant in NY; what I couldn't put up with was the dry, stringy roast chicken and below average plain mash. French?! No one would dare serve this up anywhere in France. And believe the praise for their French onion soup at your peril: My wife's F.O.S. tasted okay, but half the bowl was filled with a massive lump of cheese that seemed to have been added - twice - as an afterthought. Avoid this place. Nip across to Jay Shaffer's on 23rd, or even up to the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.

Pros: Er . . .

Cons: Noisy, crowded, poor food

.

I have to say that the party continued late night after I left the bars and went into L'Express. Some people have said the crowdedness is a con but I think really just added to the end of my night.

The service and food was so great, I assume they are use to the crowded restaurant and they were extremely attentive even though it was crowded and some tables were rowdy. I was at a table with special orders and the food came out perfect without a side of attitude

I think this place will soon become a staple and the end of the night. Spread the word, Love this place!

Pros: 24 Hrs

Cons: Can be crowded

While the sun may be setting on my night, I have to say there is a true light at the end of the tunnel when I know that I can head right to L'Express for a delish end to the night.

While diners can be amazing there is a level of sophistication that is provided at L'Express that makes late night eating appear to be that much more civilized.

Pros: 24 Hour Classy Place

I stopped in with my 2 friends around 3 am on a Saturday night. The place was buzzing. However, my tea was barely warm and I requested hotter water. The waiter brought it, but he wasn't happy. Then my burger, which I've ordered there before, arrived with no cheese (also was barely warm). I asked the waiter who glared at me in a subdued manner, before saying in a controlled but obviously irritated voice, "you have to request it if you want it."!! Both my friends looked up in unison with a shocked look. It was more so the manner in which he said it.
My other friend's water for tea was also barely warm, but she decided against asking the waiter to change it because he was so rude. She wanted to return her burger to be cooked a bit more for it was too raw, but because of the waiter with an unwelcoming attitude, she ate it without returning it. She is definitely not a shy person and would usually speak up if she's not happy with something. But we certainly didn't want him to take it out on our food.
I'm not saying he would, but we didn't want to risk it.

Had Hamburger at L'Express for Lunch on January 31st, 2009 and after couple hours later I had the worst food po1soning experience. Not sure if the kitchen was dirty or they used bad meat but whatever I ate made me very sick.

I stopped by here with a friend last night, and had the best french onion soup I've had since my trip to Paris. The ambience is very cool too. I recommend this place for a quiet date or dinner with friends.

wow, used to like to pop in here but last two times were awful. i'm done with this spot. had laughably watery soup today, like a prop for a bad SNL skit, slow disinterested service, greasy calamari means i can do better anywhere else. get better quality food from any street vendor and better service at any fast food joint. ungood people, ungood.

Everything at L?express was SOOOOOO delicious! I don't know if the food is actually THAT good, or if I was just really hungry....perhaps it was a combination of both, but in any case, it was a delightful meal. My love of French food comes mainly from the prevalent role butter plays in many French recipes, and L?express used my fave ingredient quite well without making any dish too greasy or rich. My friend and I enjoyed the Steak Frites and Chorizo Brochettes ; both were excellent

I've eaten here once during normal dinner hours with no problem, but my experience this past weekend was among my worst dining experiences in the city. The wait staff seems to make use of the fixed tip after 1AM. I do not know if our waitress was trying to add some authenticity to our French dining experience (actually, I think she was Russian), but she promptly snatched the menus from each of our grasps upon ordering and she essentially ordered one of my friends, who was still deciding, to hurry up. The place was busy, but it was still uncalled for. Among other minor acts of rudeness, the management does not appear to care who they let in. A girl at a neighboring table was hanging on to her boyfriend for dear life and was in and out of consciousness. Imagine my lack of surprise when she threw up on the floor next to us. If your concern is mostly the food, I can honestly say that it is no more than mediocre. The pate left much to be desired and my croque monsieur had an odd after-taste (how do you mess up a ham and cheese sandwich with loads of butter?). At least it was not expensive. Better luck to you all in your late night dining...

I caught up with some friends at L'Express for brunch - loved it! Such a diverse menu, plenty of options even for the pickiest person (I know, I was with one!) We all loved our dishes and shared - hands down favorite was the french toast. Yum!

A couple of friends and I enjoyed some wine and appetizers at a table right next to the windows. We got a nice breeze so it felt like we were outside without sitting on the sidewalk. The service was excellent and the specials, delicious. Creme brulee with rhubarb was amazing!

I love love love this place! I've been here several times, usually after a night of partying, made it one time for dinner as well. The French toast here @ 5am after a long night=heaven! Everything is delicious, fresh, well prepared. When I came for dinner we got a bottle of wine which was ok, a little pricey for the quality, which is my only complaint. I love the atmosphere, music and crowd every time I come, its very chill and relaxed, not filled with loud, obnoxious drunks. L'Express is the absolute perfect way to begin or end every night!!

A couple years ago, when I worked in the area, I used to love L'Express. They could always be counted on for a nice atmosphere, a good glass of wine, and reasonable prices. But over the last year, the place has gotten worse and worse. Last week, I walked into the restaurant and hovered around for about five minutes before the hostess appeared. I asked for a table for two -- which shouldn't have been a problem since it was still early and the tables were virtually all empty. Yet she bruskly refused to seat me and directed me to the bar which, unlike the dining area, was full. I wouldn't have thought much of it, but my last few visits there have been more of the same. Go to L'Express if you're looking for disinterested service and mediocre food; otherwise, take your money elsewhere and let this place go the way of the dinosaur.

went there for lunch during a weekday and service was terribly slow, it took forever for a server to come over even though the place was not busy at all
food was mediocre, we ordered the tomato and mozz salad, mussels, and calamari
everything was subpar...the mozzarella did not taste fresh at all, calamari dipping sauce had a really odd flavor, and mussels were eh...overall would not come back here again, especially with so many other good restaurants in the area

Tried to get a table for two in the half-empty restaurant and was told to wait until a table opened up or be squeezed between two other couples. The tables are too close as it is. Meanwhile, we saw at least five tables for 4 that were empty. The waitress said they are for bigger parties. I'll bet that in the time we could've sat down and eaten, only one or two of the tables would have been occupied. I understand about seating policies but it looks like the restaurant would rather have empty tables than go against their own seating policy. Hope your waiters enjoyed the tips from your empty tables.

Pros: Wouldn't know of any - never sat down to eat

Cons: Tables too close to each other, poor mgt

L'Express is a poorly run diner located in a hot spot of the big apple. This place has had my business for the last time as well as my friends. It's loud and the table setting is way too close. If you want a nice and somewhat quite ambiance, this is not the place for you. Don't order the steak frites, as the "cook" does not know his temperatures. Don't bother ordering the croque monsieur because you will get one piece of ham and if you tell them it's "all bread" they will charge you $2 more for one more piece of ham. The service is horrible. Normally, you go to a restaurant and you expect the server to check on you atleast ONE time, correct? Not in this place. No no, they drop the food and come back after you finish. Sure it's a trendy place to go to see and be seen, but it's WAY TOO OVERPRICED for the quality of food. It's not worth the wait for your food or the poor service and definitely not the extremely loud environment. I don't recommend this place at all. It's a true disappointment and they give real French cuisine, a bad name.

This place virtually had no customer service. I waited forever for my food. Yea it was crowded but it doesn't mean to neglect your customer. Was given a quick insincere sorry and that was it. The food was ok, but I am sure the sour feeling from the service made it taste even worse. I wouldn't recommend this place at all, if I wanted this kind of service, I might as well just gone to McDonalds, where they at least would get my order correct the first time. PS: Delivery service nonexistent either, was on the phone for like 30 min before they got it right. Terrible!

Called in to order delivery, the first person took down my address, number, and order and was put on hold. And then a second person came to re-confirm everything, and while she re-confirmed my address, she cancelled my order saying that I lived too far. I was on the phone for like 30 min already. If I lived too far, just say so instead of wasting my time. Terrible service.

i have never written a review before and just signed up so i could write this one. i do, however, use citysearch all the time for suggestions. i am always skeptical of the user reviews because i don't always agree and often wonder who is writing them. i was looking for a restaurant in a specific neighborhood to take out of town guests and was having a hard time deciding. i found several places that looked good and had great editorial reviews but horrible user reviews. something told me to look up l'express and see what the users were writing so i could put things into perspective. i was shocked to see that so many people gave the FOOD bad reviews. i moved to this neighborhood 3 years ago and since then, my husband and i have gone to l'express almost every weekend for brunch. the food is sooo delicious that we are disappointed if we are too busy to make it over there. we both dine out a lot, are adventurous and will try anything, and are not concerned with price. French is probably our favorite. everything on the menu at l'express is always delicious. i will admit that the later you go in the day for brunch, certain items are not as fresh as if you go early, but they are still delicious. far better than balthazar's brunch and half the price. whenever i have a brunch date with friends i always suggest l'express and everyone is always pleased and asks to go back. anyone who says that the food is so-so obviously doesn't appreciate good food or has picky taste. now, if you are looking for amazing, attentive service or are in a hurry, you may want to go elsewhere. i'm not saying they are rude, they are actually friendly (when you see them). if you have time to relax a little and have no where to rush off to, then l'express is worth the wait. we do ask ourselves every weekend why we subject ourselves to such poor service week after week but then the food arrives and we quickly forget what we were complaining about!

I've been going to L'Express for years, until now a good old reliable meal. They just crash and burned big time. After waiting an hour and a half, a delivery man - with heavily bleeding gums - told me not to worry, that my meal had been replaced with fresh food, and that my old order had been RE-SERVED to another customer. Salmon, mind you. Proceed with caution.

I've been here twice in past 3 months and it is a decent place with decent food and nice ambiance. The lighting is perfect here. Today the bread here was especially good: sourdough loaf....but I was REALLY hungry when I got there. I had the burger with bluecheese. It was tasty and frites were good too. My wife's mushroom ravioli was so-so but she liked it. Tasted to me like raviolies swimming in Campbell's cream of mushroom soup. We shared a warm goat cheese salad which was good, but portion was small for $9. The waiter was nice and laidback unlike most NYC waiters. Overall, we had a very pleasant time. Least compliment I can give is you could do worse.

As crazy as this sounds, going late at night is a whole different experience. Recently, I went with a few girlfriends after a night out, and both the service & food were excellent. The croque monsieur (which was complained about in another review) was fresh & tasty, as were the other dishes served. In fact, the waiter was so nice & attentive that he brought out a bday dessert for my friend -- for free! Fast forward 2 weeks later for a Sunday brunch & it was a completely different story. I don't know what our waitress looked like b/c she never came around (not even for water refills or bread), & the food tasted reheated (onion tart was bland & the salad limp). Happily tho, the fries were good.

Service in this bistro/cafe was terrible. In a half-empty restaurant, the hostess tried to seat me next to the kitchen. My warm goat cheese salad arrived about 2 minutes after my appetizer-even though I'd specifically told the waiter that I wanted it second as my entree. When it arrived again, the goat cheese was cold. They didn't bring bread and I had to ask three times to get it. (No refills on soda, but you'd expect that from a French place). The expresso was small - much smaller than ones I usually received when living in france. The waiters were getting a wine class from a very loud manager and ignoring all the patrons - someone should have been giving them a class on serving instead. In a neighborhood with so many other wonderful options, its obvious that 24 hour service is the only reason this place stays open.

Pros: 24 hours, moderate prices

Cons: , tired food

.

Ive had many great meals at LExpress but today was a disaster. Empty on what should have been a busy Sunday: Are other also sensing a problem here? Waited forever for the waitress, forever again for the food. No bread ever came. Cold fries. Croque monsieur awful: One TINY SLIVER of ham in an enormously greasy and tastelessly large sandwich. Yech! Bread quality still high..pommes frites would have been good hot. Waitress NEVER came back. When I finally chased her down and complained about the sandwich she SMILED and asked our dessert plans. Not a language issue: Shes a native English-speaking American. No apology, no offer of a different main course. The horror was billed in full. Dessert was fine, but also billed in full. Thats wrong. Id hate to lose LExpress but Im waiting for other recent reviews here at City Search before going back.

Went with the girls for dinner last night, and experienced only a minor wait (10 min) on a busy Thursday night. Service was very friendly and relatively prompt for a place as jammed as it was. My girlfriends and I were extremely impressed with the quality of food: I had the escargots and steak au poivre, and both just about melted in my mouth! To top it all off, we shared the molten chocolate cake dessert which was sinfully rich and delish. My only (small) gripe was I wish someone had made an effort to replace the full glass of red wine that I spilled down my shirt. Oh well...can't have it all can we?

You can't beat L'Express after a strong night of partying. My girlfriends and I always make a point of making L'Express a part of the night - it's almost like a ritual now. Egg white omelettes, goat cheese salad, and great burgers.

Pros: consistent, great menu, scene

Not only is this one of the few awesome 24 hour restaurants in the area, but the staff is great. I accidentally left a cashmere scarf that had a great deal of sentimental value and the waiter placed it in the lost+found for me!

I went to L'Express a few weeks ago and definitely enjoyed the experience! The wine list is much longer than the menu itself, but none of us were complaining. The service is slow and it is very crowded, but its definitely worth the trip!

I've been here a few times before. The food is pretty good, although I liked the fries a lot more than my sandwich. The waiters were courteous and prompt.

I hosted a brithday party this fall at L'Express with 20 guests. I cannot begin to tell you how great the staff was. They accomodated my every request, corked and served the champagne that I brought in, delivered the birthday cake with candles to the table. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. I've been there several times since and cannot stop singing the praises of this restaurant....And it's open 24 hours!!

This is a nice place for lunch. Service was quick and beat expectations. You should probably try the Lyonnaise specialties, but the sandwich menu has decent standard fare, and they come with a plate of delicious thin fries. My croque monsieur delivered. Also has an excellent lunch wine list and a solid beer list. Prices are decent, you can have a meal for under 20 bucks.

ONLY USE THIS PLACE AS A BACK UP. THE SERVICE IS NOTORIOUSLY BAD. I KNOW CUZ I USED TO WAITRESS AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT KIND OF SERVICE! THE TABLES ARE VERY CLOSE TOGETHER AND THE FOOD IS ADEQUATE ALTHOUGH NOTHING SPECIAL. FOR A 24 HOUR PLACE GO TO FLORENT (BETTER FOOD..MORE MONEY BUT AT LEAST YOU'RE GETTING SOMETHING FOR IT) OR TO SIDEWALK CAFE FOR CHEAPER FARE.

When we can't figure out where to eat, L'Express is a good backup. I do think the dinner menu is better than the lunch menu, but most of the food is quite good. I am especially fond of the "sausage of the day." I'm not a drinker, and I find that the waiters usually blow us off and ignore us once we don't spend a lot of money ordering wine, and the water takes a while to get re-filled, but the food is good enough that we return. It is quite crowded, but we never have to wait more than 15-20 minutes for a table.

This place has great food--I highly recommend the escargo smothered in garlic and bread crumbs and the dialy special fish which is almost always served with the best risotto I've ever had in a terrific sauce.

The strongest thing this place has going is that it is open all the time and attracts a pretty eclectic late night crowd. I wouldnt say anything is extravagantly good, but the burgers are always a good bet. The staff can be a bit slow and sometimes pretentious. Although, theres nothing to stop me from dining here at 3AM when Im in the neighborhood.
