I went to this salon based on all the good reviews I found online. Unfortunately I was highly disappointed with the results. Although I do think my experience pertains strictly to the woman who did my hair. I came here for senegalese

Let me start by saying I HATE to braid my hair. It takes too long, too painful and too expensive. As a result, i only braid it when I must and this is usually every 3 years. I braided it last yr and it took me 7 hours for regular box

I am always pleased with my look after leaving Aminata's salon. The ladies are personable and work quickly. Instructions are taking well and each style i request with various hair colors and textured hair are made into works of hair art by

In reference to the bad review about roaches at the shop, I'm a customer and have never seen one roach when I went to get my hair done and I was in the shop for about 6 hours. I think that people are getting confused with Aminata African

Ok, I have been a customer for Aminata African Braiding for 6 mos or so. And I am in shock to see that this is the highest rated braiding salon in New York or Harlem for that matter. The first thing first Aminata's daughter is the primary reason she is getting these high rating. She is by far the best braider in the shop. She listen to you when you tell her how you want your hair styled. She braids tight without causing you unnecessary pain which is a huge plus. As much as I like her daughter one good stylist does not make a good braiding salon. The shop is nasty,if you must go there please do yourself a favor and bring your own hair. DO NOT USE THEIR HAIR. I've sat in a chair and watch hundreds of roaches crawling in and out of the hair boxes. It was horrible. Not to mention they do not care if your hair is roach infested from laying across their nasty counters. The whole shop could use a deep cleaning. The rugs, chairs, couches, counters...everything. These African salons bring in all this money but they do not invest in their own shops. It's ridiculous. If someone on average has to be in your salon 5-8 hours, wouldn't you want them to feel like they are in a clean environment and not taking home rodents and bugs. Too me you cannot have pride in what you do when the place is nasty. If the shop is dirty that's the first sign of a bad salon. That means the owner or manager's primary concern is making and keeping money. Not customer service.

Also Aminata's other braiders are notorious for doing what they want to do with your hair and not vice verse. Again, if I am paying you to do my hair why can't I get the style I want. I have seen more than enough poke out lips and nasty comments in their native language about people demanding a certain style. Overall this shop is not worth the visit. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE HIGH RATINGS.

I am a tourist from Europe. Everytime i come to New York City I want to get braids and i tried one shop from 125th. I did not like the look they gave me. So, I went online and saw reviews of Aminata African Braiding, I said I would give it a try. I was so happy with the look they gave me. These ladies were so friendly and so nice, constantly they asked me if i liked the braids while they were doing my hair. They made sure that it was not too tight. I am just too happy with these people. From now on everytime i come to America/New York, I would go to them.

Pros: great service, lots of patience, very welcoming

Cons: no place is perfect

These ladies are phenomenal. I have been getting my braids done here on and off for over 5 years, refuse to go anywhere else. Don't get sucked in by the ladies outside on the streets trying to get you to go to their salon. Aminata's prices are the best anyway and the hair they offer is of good quality and cheaper.

Pros: Nice braids, cheap, good customer service

Cons: Time, too much talking

Although there was a bit of a miscommunication when I got there, they made sure that I was satisfied and even took some money off the original price. They work quickly, so I didn't stay half as long as I thought I would have. A month later, and my braids are still looking good. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

This was my first time at Aminata and I'm very happy I took the chance. My decision to tgo here was based on the write ups that a co-worker saw. Astou did my hair and I was quite pleased with the way she braided and made suggestion on how to condition and care for my hair. I've had so many compliments. I definitely will be going back!

If you want to leave happy because you look good, Aminata African Hair Braiding is the best place to go to. They do sell hair for braiding. Such as wet and weavy, straight hair, twisting hair and so on. However, they dont sell weaving hair, you just have to get it from somewhere else. They have beauty supplies very close from the shop. I am warning those who want to pay less money by going to the other shops around 125th....Remember Aminata want to give you a service not only for today but for tomorrow as well. She wants you to come back therefore she provides good customer service for you...Trust me!

They are wonderful, they have thier own hair if you want to purchase it from them and it is cheaper. They know what they are doing but make sure you speak up if you want something different or a change. They know what they are doing and they are good at it. They are also inexpensive. If you want to buy your own hair it is definately okay. Make sure you call in advance to make an appointment they fill up fast. The earlier you get there the better since they will work on you first and help you get out first.

It was my first time getting braids and being that there are so many hair salons in NYC I didn't know where to go. I found the salon on citysearch and since it had such great reviews I had to go and see for myself. I was not disappointed. I got so many compliments on my braids. These ladies did an amazing job.

If you like salons that are beautiful to look at -this is not one. The decor is functional at best. If you just want box braids (interlock, weaves, flat twists) that look good and don't cost ridiculous manhattan prices ($80 for medium box braids, $100 for micros) this is definitely the place to go.

They also sell hair if you want to add weave, but you buy your own hair for braids or twists (which isn't such a problem-there's a beauty supply about half a block away)

They get booked fast so make sure to make an appointment at least 3 days before your service

I love, love, love Aminata and Aisha... LOVE them and all the wonderful ladies that work in this braid shop...

Aminata usually answers the phone -- she is the SWEETEST person in the whole world her other TOP-BRAIDER is Aisha -- I have been going to Animata for over 4 years, I can only braid my hair and I have 'a lot of thick hair' -- I go there every 2 months, even for 'touch-ups.'

Now that they are SOOOO popular, you MUST make an appointment for the weekends, but weekdays and early mornings are always best and fast... These ladies run a clean and professional shop, I really love these sisters... No one on 125th comes even close to this level of service and price, trust me... I have tried others and REGRETTED it!

I was in a bind to get extensions into my hair for a last minute photo shoot, and I called Aminatas- which I found on citysearch based upon rating, it was about an hour before closing time. Aminata was very kind and said she'd wait for me. I was stuck intraffica and about 1/2 hour late. when I arrived- she was waiting patiently after sending the rest of her staff home for the day. she quickly and skillfully braided my extensions into my hair and I can honestly say Ive never had better extensions weaved into my hair. Ive been to MANY braiders, and have paid up to $100per track to weave into my head.Aminata charges $10per track and is the absolute BEST braider out there! she knows her stuff!!! and she loves what she does, she takes pride in ALL her work!!! She is well worth the visit to Harlem!!!
