Took the family to go see Mama Mia and decided to have dinner beforehand. What a great place to get food and watch a show before your show! The price was great when you consider the location and the wait staff was extremely friendly.

I absolutly love going to Ellen's!!! Whenever I go to the city I try to go and it's so much fun!! Just make sure that they don't put you in the basement or then you don't get that true diner feel.

We've lived in NYC for 15 years and despite walking by Ellen's Stardust probably once a day for a decade, we finally visited recently when my 13 year old cousin was in from town. As a general rule we would not normally patronize any place around Times Square because it would be swamped with tourist and overpriced mediocre food... which is indeed the case here.

However, if you're visiting from out of town and are in the Times Square area anyway, and don't want to pay for and sit through a broadway show, its a great way to get a little taste of the broadway experience while chowing down on some basic diner grub... the atmosphere is fun and social '50s diner themed and would be entertaining for kids of all ages. The wait staff are certainly nice enough, but more interested in the singing and less on the waiting tables part... so service is a bit lacking.

Bottom line: it is what its is which is a fun family friendly "destination restaurent" which caters to tourist doing the "broadway" thing on their trip to the big city... so if that's what you're looking for you found the right place!

Cons: touristy, service, value

Because this restaurant is in NY, the food is better than a typical diner. Given the fact that it is in the middle of the theater district, there are wait staff dressed in 50's costumes who serve you and also stop to sing. It's a hoot and you get to hear really talented people. They don't take reservations and there is often a long wait. Try to go at off times.

I was very excited to go to Ellen's Star dust Dinner this weekend and ended up being very disappointed. The wait staff didn't sing very well and they seemed much more interested in their singing then in their serving the food. We had to wait over an hour for our meals and our waiter left alot to be desired. He was very rude and didn't do a great job making us feel welcome. Also having a bucket put in my face during my meal to support people for voice lessons, acting etc was very tacky since I would already be tipping 15%. I shouldn't have to feel pressured to give money to people who should be paying for their own things. I for one will not be going back to this establishment and will not reccomend it to anyone I know.

Pros: Restuarant had a decent ambiance.

Cons: rude wait staff, Wait staff couldn't sing and took to long for food to come out.

Fun foods(maybe overly priced) ; the staff are most all top notched performers; it can be very crowded; do NOT go close to your showtime; you will never get seated and back to your show in time!

Do NOT miss Ellen's if you are visiting NYC.

Great place to go for a fun bite to eat. The waitresses and waiter sing classic 50's tunes while waiting on you. The food is good old diner food. Hamburgers, dogs, shakes and such.

The price is fair for New York.

Absolutely Fantastic! Went on a referral and my family was completely satisfied. Spent a little more for the food but got a show! We would go back for sure. My 9 year old daughter wants to move to NY and work at The Stardust Cafe

I read many reviews on Ellen's and decided that it was the place to take my granddaughter for her 10th birthday. My elderly in laws were here from the west coast, and total in our party was 10. I even called the week before we went to the city to make sure they could seat all 10 of us together for this ocassion. I was told it wasn't a problem. We arrived at 2 on Thursday afternoon, and they tried to seat us ALL in a triangle shaped booth. There was no way we'd all fit. We asked if we might all sit together and they refused to let us move to seats that would accomodate all of us. (those seats were saved for couples only!!!???) My husband, my sister in law, and I, had to sit away from the birthday table! My granddaughter was upset, and the food was undercooked (her hamburger came out almost raw!) The only good part of this restaraunt was the singing. The service and the treatment we got was AWFUL! I wouldn't go there again.

This place was a lot of fun. The waiter's get up and sing Kareoke but since you are in the center of New York City they are all aspiring actors and performers and they are fantastic. The food is good diner food too. Great grilled cheese or hamburgers. I loved the milkshakes and the banana split is out of control. Normal time's square prices - nothing is cheap but a fun time.

I usually eat out alot and I like trying new places. I saw this diner after coming out of meeting so I decided to go in. The food was good. I really like the wings and the burger I order was huge. My waiter was really friendly and sweet. I love the music and the singing since I got to sing along. I recommended this place to all my co workers and plan going back many times. It is pricey but its time square so no big deal.

I have been to Ellen's several times in the past few years. Even though it seems to be slipping a bit, it is still a fun place to go at least once while in NYC. Typical diner fare is ok, but the real fun is the decor and the singing waitstaff. Again, I would say the food, service and quality of singing has gone down over the years. Be sure to sit upstairs in the original dining room if you can because the newer basement level dining room is a dark dungeon.

This place never gets old. It is always upbeat and fun. The staff is amazing how they juggle serving and performing the best of karaoke classics. A birthday celebration favorite! If you go pre-show, just let the server know and they'll assist you with time saving menu choices. The food is always consistently good. A bit better than the average diner. The chicken quesadillas are my favorite. The desserts are great as well. The brownie mudslide sundae is one of the best I've ever had. Service is always friendly, if not always fast, and they are always very entertaining. The only drawback is the extremely tight quarters. Going with a party of two may find you sitting with strangers at your table. This may not be the place for you if you require much personal space.

Went in April 2007 and we loved it! The entertainment was sooo much fun. The breakfast was very good and there was No wait. We went back the next night after a show and the kids had milkshakes while the adults had Irish coffee. I recommend it to everyone that is headed to NYC.

The entertainment was great, but the hosts are terrible. We had a party of 9 and it was really crowded so they "assumed" it would be ok to seat us at different tables. Had we not already waited approx 1 hr to sit, I would have flipped. I heard another party yelling at the hosts telling them they will wait for a table so their children would not be parted from them and the hosts refused. You want to enjoy yourself with your family, that is why you go there. If I am going to pay $15.00 for a hamburger platter then I would like to enjoy my family's company. Anyway, the waiter was awesome. He put a smile on my face after the inital shock. The waiters are quite good at singing and entertaining. The one singer sat by my mother-in-law and sang to her. Overall, it was fun.

My husband and I enjoyed Ellen's Stardust Diner very much. We were immediately greeted and seated. Our table was very small as was the walkway near the table, but not that big of a deal. The food was a bit pricey ($13.95 for a hamburger and fries) but it was good. What really made this place for me was the singing waitstaff. They get up and take turns singing. However, I wasn't crazy about the "tip jar" that was passed around twice while we were there. They ask for tips to help pay for there signing/dancing/acting lessons or headshots etc. Of course it's up to you if you wish to help them, but I'm already leaving the server a tip!! All in all, we enjoyed Ellen's and would recommend it.

Party of 4 in restaurant waiting patiently. We had already given host number in party. It wasn't that busy yet. While waiting 3 of 4 (including children) went to bathroom. The children had to go to the bathroom and it opened up more space inside the door. Another host refused to seat us b/c the children were in the restaurant bathroom so he started seating other patrons. As I watched the line grow inside and outside, I thought maybe he didn't understand me so I tried to explain that the rest of the family was in the restaurant, just in the bathroom. The host ignored me and then another host came over and started yelling at me. He kept yelling at me and continued when the children returned. He made a huge scene. We finally got seated. I was so upset I could barely eat. We should have walked out. I put on a happy face for the kids. The server was nice enough but the experience had been ruined. Not worth the hassle.

This place has what every little kid looking to be a big show star, every grown up who just wanted to be entertained, and any one in between who just wanted to smile ever wanted. So I go there quite often because the place is just so much fun, and every time I order something different. From their Burgers, to Salads, to Chickenpot Pies... the food is just amazing. I've never had a complaint. Then the deserts are just delicious...best milkshakes in town for sure...Its like a old fashioned diner. I was served right away, and then as soon as they take your order they are off and singing! The people that work here as waiters and waitress' are allso singers! They sing everything from Broadway to Billy Joel... they are also interactive, so they will come over to your table and sing to you the most beautiful love song, or get you into Grease Lightening. This place has two floors, so there is plenty of room, and you never have to wait long for a table. It is also in the heart of Manhatten so its like a fun warm up before or after a show. Or you can just come here, and be entertained for a while instead of going to a show!
Just a lot of fun.

This was one of our favorite places to go with our daughter. She loved it when they sung show tunes from shows she's seen like Little Shop of Horrors and Wicked. The food was good, not great, but it is a diner so we weren't expecting 5 star food.
We were seated fairly quickly, but be careful where they seat you - you'll want an easy view of the center of the restaurant. If you're sitting with your back to the restaurant, you'll have to turn all the way around to watch the wait staff perform.
All in all a very fun experience that we recommend highly.

I went with a friend to NYC to see a show and my friend was determined to eat at Ellen's before hand and said she absolutely loved it there. However, we were seated after a 5 minute wait and then proceeded to sit at our table for almost half an hour before we realized the waiter wasn't coming and had to go find someone to serve us ourselves. Once we finally got a waiter, it was another 20 minutes before we got our food, which was pretty expensive and pretty disgusting. I was really apathetic towards having the waiters/waitresses singing and dancing--they were good but it was pretty much background music to me. However, you could tell the waiters/waitresses were more concerned with putting on a good show instead of the people they were serving. By the time we finally got the check we were ready to GO.

I first visitied Ellens when i was 8 and i loved it. Now i come back to New York once or twice a year, and we always eat there. The food is excellent and waiting for it is even better. For vegetarians, like myself, i highly reccommend the stuffed potatoes. But of course, you might have to be a little patient if your waiter/tress doesn't come to you right away-- they might be the one singing!

enjoy!

I first visited Ellen's in 1996...it was a blast! A truly American diner experience to rave about.
So on a return visit to NYC in 2007, I decided to go there again...it couldn't have changed much right! How wrong! The food was inedible, the staff were awful singers (cats screaming comes to mind) and the place felt dank and dirty. The redeeming feature was that the waitress was trying her best and her service was polite and friendly, although she didn't dare come back to our table to ask how we were doing! Our faces must have said it all. It's sad for me to say but this place certainly put me off trusting my first good experience of a NYC diner. On my next visit I will check out your reviews first and find a good place before I part with good money!

my family needed a quick meal before a show on a visit to NYC and this was recommended by a "family friendly" guide. there was a long line, so 3 of our 5 member party got in line awaiting the other 2. the "host" (I use that term loosely) was screaming out to people in the line, "how many?!" and we responded when he got to us. he never once asked us whether our party was complete or told us that it had to be complete in order to be seated - which I thought was unusual, especially for NY. a little while later he came back asking for a party of 5, and the 3 of us sat down. I went out to find our other 2 members, whom I thought were waiting in the back of the line, not knowing we were already there (we came in separate cabs). in the meantime, the host throws my mother and daughter out b/c our party was not complete. my mother (being a true Southerner) politely told him that we didn't know the party had to be complete to be seated. he argued w/ her and said that he HAD told us that! unbelieveable! After reading the reviews here, I'm glad we didn't waste our money. It was cramped and too loud anyhow!

Pros: close to theaters

Cons: horrible customer service

.

I come to this diner often with family and friends. The staff is incredibly talented and efficient. The food is delicious. I have never had a complaint with this restaurant. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is brilliant. It's a meal and a show all day long! On my birthday they sang to me, and brought me a special dessert with a candle. They make everyone feel welcome....everyone of all ages! If u want a good meal with fun entertainment ...check it out!!!!

Pros: amazing food, great entertainment, efficient and talented staff....etc

Cons: crowded around show times

.

This is possibly the worst food in NY...you know you're in trouble when amusement parks have better quality food. This was my second trip to the diner, going once in 2002 and thoroughly enjoying it back then. The food was still awful, but better than it is now, but the talent was sooooooooo good. The kids were great. Last week, not so much. It was loud, obnoxious, and the management is anything but helpful. I'd recommend if you want something fun and cheap check out Vynil on 51st and 9th...just as fun, way more fabulous, and food you can actually eat! VERY DISSAPOINTED IN ELLEN'S

Cons: WAY OVERPRICED, TERRIBLE FOOD, TOURIST TRAP

I have a friend here from the UK who had a hankering to visit a all american diner so although i would normally rather poke myself in the eye than eat in times square we decided to give this place a go

on a positive note the staff were great, enthusiastic and talented ... the singing wait staff are the only thing that saved this from being a truely horrible experience

we ordered nachos and burgers - not exactly a stretch for diner .. or so we thought !!

the nachos were poor quality with hardly any cheese and minimal, nasty and cheap toppings. The real treat of the evening was our burgers (which by the way cost $10.95 before adding toppings)

the patty was a greasy processed mess, im not exaggerating when i say it was inedible ! the mushrooms were canned and slimy and cheese was disgusting

we each recieved a side of about ten fries and a manky old pickle - - i literally felt like we had been mugged !!!

If you want good burgers / nachos other old favourites try 7A in the east village - this place is a money making machine obviously praying on tourists and not at all bothered about attracting repeat customers

I hope those waiters get their broadway break very very soon !!!!

After spending 4 days in NYC & not researching many restaurants ahead of time, this was one restaurant that a local friend suggested (she had passed by before & said it looked fun). We walked in at dinnertime & were IMMEDIATELY seated (we had a party of 9). The service was a little slow, but you have to remember that your waitstaff is also your entertainment, so if you're looking for your waiter/waitress, LISTEN 'cuz he/she might be performing. Their voices are beautiful especially our waitress, Dee Dee. They are humorous - it was by far our favorite restaurant (we had 2 families - each of us with girls ages 10 & 7). Even the parents LOVED the food & the entertainment. The price was no different than any other place we ate at in NYC, so it's no bargain, but totally worth it. The Death By Chocolate Cake is scrumptious! The mac & cheese was (in my opinion) delicious & tasted homemade (I'm a HUGE mac & cheese fan!). The atmosphere ... Grease+Happy Days=Ellen's Stardust Diner!!

Pros: Entertainment included, Excellent for families, If you know Broadway songs, sing along!

Cons: Service was a little slow at times, bathrooms upstairs

I could deal with the singing wait staff shtick if the place were not so RIDICULOUSLY overpriced.

One order of macaroni and cheese (which my 10 year old didn't even like),
one cheesburger,
one turkey wrap (which was incredibly average and tasted like it was prepared hours before) and
3 shakes, with tip, COST $72.00 !!!!!!!!! I could have gone to the Parker Meridian's Burger Joint and gotten much better burgers and shakes for half that.

Absolutely insane for third rate food. AVOID AT ALL COSTS OR IT WILL COST YOU PLENTY!!

POST SCRIPT TO MY PREVIOUS POSTING --- MARCH 2006: I can't help but notice that for every lousy review (and there are plenty!) -- "someone" writes a glowing review, even going so far as to refute specific complaints of previous posters. Boy, the staff at Ellen's Stardust should spend less time on the computer and more time learning the restaurant business.

Pros: You'll LOVE this place if you are a masochist.

Cons: Sub-Par Food at Insane Prices

At 8am on a Friday morning, most little cafes in New York are packed. And with a group of 8, a packed place wasn't an option. We needed something reasonably priced and fast. When we found Ellen's Stardust Diner, the "singing waitstaff" advertisment scared me a little. But the music didn't sound too bad and the prices were decent, so the group consented. Inside we were treated to an array of Broadway showtunes and, when they weren't singing, a mix of stuff that could have been on Grease or Dirty Dancing. The food wasn't anything to rave about, but it was good.
When we were just about finished, I wanted to request the song they had been singing when we found the diner, "I'll Cover You" from Rent. The two guys working agreed. They came over by our table and sang for us. When they saw I knew all the words to the song, the one put his mic to my mouth and let me sing a little. It was a blast. And I, being a Broadway freak and a total Renthead, had the most fun out of our whole group.
These waiters and waitresses, which all look to be college students, aren't just kids off the street. They had to audition to get their job and they have some amazing talent in there.
I've never had dinner there, but I've heard it's good. You can even sit at the bar and just have a couple of drinks.
If you've got the time to spare, definately check it out.

Table of 6, and when 1 person ordered just a milkshake, the waitress said "you know there's a minimum order for the table, right? Or else you get charged a fee." The minimum is for a table of six? $30. $5 per person. So if one person only wants a milkshake, (which, btw- costs $6), the rest of us ordering $12 burgers and alcoholic beverages and such will meet 'minimum order.' And then- she didn't bring waters until we were halfway through our food, extra napkins got thrown on the table as she walked by, etc. No checking up on the table. She didn't even bring our food- someone else did, just throwing random dishes in front of each of us, and we sorted it out ourselves. Then the singing waitstaff passed around their tip bucket- we couldn't get water or napkins, but we should tip for the singing?

We had the nicest time visiting Ellen's during our recent trip to NYC. This is one "tourist-trap" very worth visiting.

It's great to watch the waiters/waitresses belting out your favorite tunes, while also serving you your meal.

Can it really be? Actress/Actor turned waitress/waiter for some change and an opportunity to live in the city? Say it ain't so. These folks really get a chance to put their skills to the test, to razzle and dazzle the crowd while serving their drinks, food, and collecting tips. Its a fun night out, but beware this diner is much spendier than most diners in the area.

Pros: Singing, Service

Cons: Food, Prices, Noisy

.

Nasty maitre d', apathetic waitstaff, noisy, uncomfortable, and terrible service. Even with our reservations, our party was seated in the cramped corner with not enough chairs or settings. The food came after 10 minutes, and our order was wrong. The servers are confused. Took even longer to get dressing for the salad, and to correct the mistake would have been another 20 minutes. If you don't order a burger, you're on your own for food quality. Must be more interested in the tip jar than serving you. The singing was too loud. The topper was when we mentioned it was chilly at our table, the manager sarcastically blew us off with "I'll put another log on the fire." NO WAY would I ever go here again.

Very strange previous review about this fun place being "too noisy". You go to Ellen's for the entertainment, not for the food. I would have never dreamed of going there for Thanksgiving Dinner on anything of the sort. The food is average and overpriced, but you are paying for the atmosphere and outstanding entertainment by the delightful waitstaff. I plan to take my daughter here for her birthday dinner on our upcoming visit precisely because it is so much fun. She will love it. The waiters are obviously aspiring Broadway stars and make for a delightful up close performance. I trust that many of them will make it to Broadway! I can't wait to go to Ellen's again in just two more weeks! It is a part of my regular New York itinerary.

My family and I ate dinner at Ellen's for our Thanksgiving holiday meal (it was recommended by the hotel we stayed at). As all the reviews stated it is NOISY. It was also very crowded with lots of families. It is a fun atmosphere with the wait staff as aspiring actors/actresses waiting for their turn on Broadway. Each "waiter" took a turn belting out a tune and they were all quite good. However, food was average though service was fine. (I did like my 'Thanksgiving' meal of turkey and dressing, but the family said their meals were fair.) Bottom line, good place for families vs. normal Manhattan restaurants if you overlook the noise.

Went here for an early dinner around 5pm. There is some overhead construction outside so there are scaffolds blocking the diner, so it was a little harder to spot. Singing waiters were good, though a little too loud. Dinner was good, service was good. Prices were better than I expected. We would go back.

The singing wait staff are great, the food is just awful!! Not even up to diner "greasy spoon" par. Have a snack and enjoy the singing. If yo do decide to have a whole meal be prepared to pay as though your in a 5 star restaurant!

I had a quick dinner here before going to the theatre...the happy, energetic atmosphere got you in a light mood and was very enjoyable. The wait staff were all professional and extremely talented. I expect to see them on Broadway next time I'm in the city!! I only had a grilled chicken salad so can't judge the food too extensively but I'd recommend Ellen's just for the fun factor alone!

The waiters are more concerned about singing, than they are about serving. And the place is too small and noisy. I had waiters literally singing over my head, that is very annoying when you are trying to have a conversation. The food was horrible!!!! I ordered a cheese and bacon omelet and the bacon was raw, white!!! I sent it back and they came back with another omelet with Canadian bacon which I don't like and when I cut into the egg, it was runny with egg white and yolk because it was not cooked on the inside. HOW DISGUSTING!! What restaurant can't get the omelets right!!!! I thought maybe the cook was in the back singing too!!!! If you want to go somewhere crowded and noisy with lousy over priced food (two omelets and shakes was $31 and they were not edible) than this is the place for you.
