The Elms is a beautiful mansion that the Newport Preservation Society gives guided tours of. You can get tickets ahead of time or at the house but you have to wait for the next tour to leave. The Preservation Society has package tours and memberships that are your best bet. At the Elms they also have a Carriage House with luncheon as well as very nicely maintained gardens. A special tour of the servants quarters is also available at certain times and this one is worth going back for. You don't see the back stairs and atttics in any of the other houses and it is not what you are expecting at all!

The Elms is definitely one of the mansions you should put on your list to see. It is one of the largest of all the mansions here. Arrive early in the day during the summer because there often times is a long line, although it does move rather quickly. They take people in groups of 20 or 25 for tours. They probably start them every fifteen minutes or so. The Mansion is absolutely exquisite inside. My favorite rooms are the bedrooms and the kitchen. The tour guide ends you right out into their gift shop (conveniently on their part, they want you to buy something). But everything in the gift shop if very nice...its always nice to pick up a few post cards, since they don't allow cameras inside. They did let us take pictures in one or two rooms at Christmas times when they had all the poinsettia flowers,,,,hundreds and hundreds; and their beautiful Victorian Christmas trees. This was the only things we could take pictures of. Very nice place to visit any time of the year. And they have wonderful grounds you can walk around on too.

The Elms may not be as large as the Breakers, but it is just as spectacular. Self guided tours allow you to take everything in. Also, the grounds are amazing, the sunken garden has been completed and is a site to see.
