Bella Vista literally means "beautiful view" and I'm not exactly sure why they named the restaurant that because it has everything but a beautiful view! The food is delicious and the perfect place to go for lunch in the North End. The prices are absolutely unbeatable. While the decor is, well, interesting (somewhat authentic Italian, but when I went two weeks after Easter they still had stuffed animals hanging from the walls), the food is very authentic Italian. I've spent months in Italy, and this food is really what they serve there. To give you an example of lunch prices, for a chicken, veggie and pasta dish you'll pay $7.95, and for a chicken, sausage, veggie, sauce, and pasta dish you'll pay a dollar more. They also have lasagna for the same price, chicken parm and eggplant parm. The eggplant is a scant $5.95 for a huge portion. Along with free fresh bread, it is truly a treat. Bring your co-workers for a nice treat--it is a short walk from the Financial District area of town.

The choices here for fresh seafood and pasta are amazing. It is a very cozy relaxed place that I thoroughly enjoyed.

If you are easily intimidated and need to feel superior over people, then this is not the place for you. If you love italian food and service that is colorful and passionate, you will find it here. Wonderful value and the food was great. I was sorry that I wasn't in Boston longer and could have gone back. The service was great. It was not fast, I enjoyed the great conversation. The waiter/owner (bald scary guy with lots of facial scars), Tony was a character. Gruff mouthy exterior with a heart of gold. We loved talking to him. He was truly real. What a great experience, even if maybe a little out of the box.
The food is so wonderful that you will want to eat slowly and savor each bite. The lasagna was good even though my husband could only eat half of it. It was the highlight of our trip and I can't wait to go back.

Cons: parking

This small restaurant is easy to pass by and doesn't get the same level of attention as some of the others in the North End, but it absolutely should. The food is unbelievable. I cannot explain how wonderful the tortellini and ravioli are, with the bolognese sauce. At peak times, you'll want a reservation because they do get busy. I think you'll want to check which credit cards they accept. I'm pretty sure they only take Amex and cash, though I could be mistaken about that.

Of the dozens of Italian restaurants that line Hanover Street in Boston's North End, this may be one of the friendliest. Small tables pack the tiny dining room where families come to celebrate. I love their lobster fra diavolo, the house specialty. Generous portions so you better come hungry. The restaurant serves beer and wine and the prices are reasonable.

So i read all the reviews underneath me about the food not being that good and the management being rude and i disagree. When i walked in we were sat right away in a nice table in the middle of the resturaunt. They brought warm rolls over to the table and we ordered our main meals. I ordered the Chicken Parm and my boyfriend ordered the Veal. It was amazing! The manager checked on us about 3 - 4 times and was very polite. She reminded me of my Nana the typical italian with a little attitude. The atmosphere was very relaxing and made me feel at home. I have been going there ever since and i would defenitly recommed it to people!!

As a Boston resident I have eaten in many restaurants in the North End of which there are quite a few! However, when it comes to authentic Italian home-style cuisine Bella Vista is by far the best that I have experienced! The bolognese sauce is just to die for and I look forward to it every year when me and my fiance come here for our holiday dinner. The atmosphere is beautiful, and the room is lit dimly with twinkle lights and candles. If you are looking for a romantic dinner this is a great location. As to the other posts about the owner I think she is one of the best parts about the place, she always leaves you be when you don't want to be bothered and though she's not your typical TGI Friday "perky" waitress she gives the place character. We've been going here for 5 years and we love it!

I went to Bella Vista with my family and really enjoyed it. I've heard people complain about rude service here, but we didn't have a problem. The dish I got, some kind of pasta with a medley of seafood, was one of the best meals I've had in the North End. Most restaurants in the North End are super tiny, as is Bella Vista. Go to Mike's Pastries for dessert.

I was there once with my husband and another couple and two weeks later with a group of girls. Each time the food was wonderful and the house wine was not bad either. The waiter was pushy but we just ignored him. I had the mussels as my main dish and it was delicious and more than enough to share. My husband had the antipasti and it was fresh and also enough to share. The other couple and veal and chicken which they really liked. The hostess/owner(?) was rather surly but aren't we used to that by now. The girls and I had a great time and everyone loved the food. I guess it is what you make of it. Where in the North End can you get a decent meal where nothing is over $16.95. I'll go back again.

I have never written a review on city search but i read them a lot. I went to this restaurant tonight with my fiance' for our anniversary. We were walking around the north end and just decided to go here...big mistake. It was awful, we waited in the doorway for a while before the woman came and seated us. We didn't get to far into the dinning room either. I pretty much sat in the doorway. I had the lovely view of a fire alarm to my right at eye level. I wish we left at this point, but we didn't. They then brought some no good stale bread over with packaged butter (where's the fresh bread and seasoned olive oil with olives...not here apparently) Then I ordered a salad which wasn't the worst ever but it wasn't the best. For our main course I got tortellini. Ick! It was so bland, I could hardly eat it ( a little over cooked and mushy too) My fiance' got eggplant parm and it was better than mine but still not great. The sauce was no good, definitively from a jar. Throughout the whole night the didn't refill our water once, and it was needed while trying to eat. The manager lady was extremely rude as well. She was insulting the whole night. Looked furious when i asked where the bathroom was, and didn't ask us how things were all night (probably because she knew i would say terrible). I couldn't wait to get out of this place!! Never go here! They should be shut down. As I right this, I feel my stomach gurgling from the terrible food.

this is one of the worst restaurants in boston. the food is flat out terrible. moreover, the food is not authentic italian as they go so far as to place sandwich rolls with packaged butter on the table and serve pasta sauce out of a jar. true purveyors of fine food would scoff at this restaurant. out of all the other great restaurants in the north end, please heed my advice and leave this one out.

I agree with most of the other reviews: the food is simply not worth the terrible service. I ordered the escarole soup which tasted good but had very little substance (broth, a few tortellinis and some escarole leaves floating around) and the manicotti which had the saltiest bolognese sauce I've ever tasted. The atmosphere was not that appealing and the place was very crowded. I also encountered the "manager" spoken of in other reviews and my impression was the same. When we got to the restaurant, she was standing outside and obviously noticed that we were there to eat but she ignored us. We didn't realize that she worked there so we walked inside and were not attended to until she decided to come inside a few minutes later and grudgingly seat us. She seemed extremely irritated by the fact that she had customers to assist, like she didn't realize that that's the point of having a restaurant... a sub-par experience in a great location - I'm sure that almost all of the numerous other restaurants on Hanover Street would have been better.

Bella Vista in the North end was NOT GOOD. The staff were rude and increadibly stupid. This one man who was apparently our waiter gave me this insulting lecture about how I must have my salad plate on the right side and my napkin on my lap. He was very rude and when I refused to put my napkin on my lap he yelled at me. What kind of waiter has the right to tell me how I eat my food, and in a very mean way? My food was mediocre, the only really good thing was that it was cheap. When the rude waiter came back and saw that my napkin was on my table and already used he came by and folded it! This man needs to be fired! DO NOT GO TO BELLA VISTA! Rabia's on Salem street is much better.

I went here for the first time 14 years ago, and have returned every time I come back to Boston. It is a small, family restaurant, and such gets busy. I fell that the people that gave negative reviews don't understand the North End. For a small, busy place, I think the family does pretty darn well. Veal Pizzaiola is the best dish, fantastic red sauce, spiced just right... seems like the girls always get the Shrimp Scampi, and they always rave about it. Highly recommended for those that appreciate good food in an intimate setting. Not recommended for those "Manahatten" or "Miami" types that want someone to kiss their feet on the way in the door... however, I respect the comments to a degree, I always go on Sunday nights or during the week. Can't imagine the hassle when all of Hanover street is packed to the gills. Just my three cents!

Pros: Some great dishes, CONSISTENT (over 14 years I can attest)

Cons: Small, too busy during the weekends, hence the comments on staff

Although the food at Bella Vista is very delightful, the staff however are the most rude, miserable people I have ever met in my entire dining experience. I was appalled when we walked into the North End restaurant and were ignored by management, and then snapped at to stand outside. Once seated, the table was uncontrollably wobbling all over the place, the white wine tasted like water, and they only take cash or Amex, but don't tell you that until it's time to pay for dinner and you pull out the Visa. With that extra side of "bad attitude" that is served at this eatery-- Bella Vista does not prove to be a very Bella Vista.

after being discriminated against at Davide restaurant, anything would look better. my boyfriend and i walked up and down hanover street looking for a cute place to have dinner and decided that this place looked the best. i have to agree with the other users that the woman who was running the place and waiting tables was very rude and seemed short-tempered. having been to italy before, the decor and close seating reminded me of one of the many trattorias i visited when i was there, and although the food and wine were very good, they did not equal anything i had when i was in italy, or at a better italian restaurant in the area. overall, i don't know if i'd go back, but the general experience wasn't bad, just not that memorable.

We just randomly chose to eat at Bella Vista because we were walking by and we were hungrey, but it was a mistake. The woman or "manager" was so rude to us. I asked where the bathroom was, and she was very snippy and seemed upset. We did not realize that they only accept American Express, so my boyfriend had to leave dinner and go to the ATM. She gave us an attitude all night. The tables were too close, I was pretty much shoulder to shoulder with the guy at the table next to us. I would never recommend this place it was terrible.

One of the few places in the North End you might walk away completely dissatisfied. It's not the only place where you'll get semi-brusque service or not be impressed with the decor, but those places make up for it with good food. Bella Vista's sauces are uninspiring and the pasta seems either over cooked or second grade. It's almost as if it came out of a can. The same goes for the produce except it'd be an insult to some brands of canned Roma tomatoes to imply that Bella Vista's lifeless sauces could be based on one of them.

I'm not quite sure how this restaurant has survived, frankly. Very poor.

This restaurant has been a favorite of mine and friends of mine for quite a few years. I have NEVER been disappointed with the food or the atmosphere. Those who wrote negative reviews might want to think about how they approached the so-called "rude" owner. She is the person who has seated any party I was with, and has been extremely pleasant even on a busy Saturday night! I have highly recommended this restaurant, and will continue to do so.

cruising the north end looking for a spot we met a couple coming out of this place who said it was great, they ate there all the time.
We went in it was VERY quiet, just a few tables seated. We were greeted by the manager who was extremely nice and friendly and chatted with us for quite awhile. not the lady described herein!
our food was excellent! my neice had pasta with clams and it was fantastic! Surprised to hear of the negatives, oh well!
I'll be the one voice of praise in this chorus of nays!

I would not recommend this place, in fact I would strongly suggest against it.
We went there and had to wait 5 minutes to be helped, when there were empty tables and no one else waiting and the hostess walked past us multiple times. When she finally did help us, she was very curt and rude.
We also asked another waiter to be seated somewhere other than right near the door since there were other empty tables and he simply rolled his eyes, gave us a dirty look and walked away without saying anything. Needless to say, we promptly left and went to another of the many wonderful restaraunt on Hanover Street- Bella Vista not included.

The food we ordered was mediocre with the exception of the mussels marinara, which was on the good side.

I was very put off by the service of the lady who took our order and gave us our check. She never looked at us or said thank you and she added 15% tip to our check for our group of four without telling us. The menu did not state any tipping policy for that restaurant. If it were up to me, I would've left 10% for poor service.

I've had better food and better service at other restaurants in the North End. Try L'Osteria on Salem St.

Editorial review hit this place right on the nose. The food pretty much sucked. The veal was rubbery just as the editor said. For $15 entrees, I'd expect a lot better quality. I could get better food than this at Olive Garden. The atmosphere was nice however. Service was below average. That big woman who I assume is one of the owners wasn't friendly in the least. I'll never chose this restaurant again.

Pros: Good atmosphere

Cons: Overpriced, Bad food, unfriendly service

.

The most unbelievable person I've ever met in my life, epsecially with the title "manager" was the woman who wants to be named "boss or owner of Bella Vista".
I went into the restaurant to ask for a table and with the worst manner I've ever experienced she told me twice "there are others before you so go out" I tried to ask who much time it would take us to wait for a table and she almost threw us out. You have to go to experince this. Somebody w/ some authority should shut that place down. It isn't worth it to spend money there. There are so many places much better around North End.
