With a name like Jim??s Buffet, you might expect something along the lines of Old Country or Golden Corral. Actually, Jim??s Buffet is a Chinese buffet, and it??s a pretty good one.

To begin with, as soon as you enter the buffet, you step over a little bridge, which covers a pond absolutely loaded with Koi fish. This was cool, and it was first time I??ve ever seen a creative entrance to a buffet. We were seated quickly, and the seating area was very nice.

There are three double-sided servers, a sushi bar, and a Mongolian grill. This means that even if one server is mostly dedicated to salad and dessert (as one was), you still have two servers plus the sushi and Mongolian grill.

The food was very good. The sushi consisted only of California rolls and Philadelphia rolls (California rolls with cream cheese), which is not the best sushi selection ever, but they were tasty. Plus, I only went for lunch and don??t necessarily expect real, raw-fish sushi. The Mongolian grill was excellent, the best one I have seen out of several. They had noodles, vegetables, meats, shrimp, and- sea scallop! We??re not talking some kind of imitation scallop, this was real sea scallops. Furthermore, the ingredients for the grill were housed in a little covered, refrigerated server, not just sitting there out in the open. The one thing I didn??t like was that you could not choose a sauce- the man who operated the grill poured the same sauce on every dish. But the sauce was good, so it was not a problem.

Along with the grill, there were some very good shrimp, squid, and meat selections. The selection was well above average, and so was the food. The price was standard- somewhere around $8, which is very reasonable for a larger buffet like this one. Overall, an excellent lunch. I would go back.

Jim's has been popular since it opened a couple years ago in a strip mall off of Welsh Road (Route 63) just outside of Lansdale. It is a large restaurant with an extensive buffet. The offerings change frequently. The food is generally very good, varied and interesting. In addition to the expected Chinese standards -- including a delicious presentation of pepper steak -- there are more adventurous offerings like tasty shrimp fritters and whole fish. The place is definitely chld-friendly. If the little ones are leery of Asian food, there's unexpectedly good pizza, fried chicken and even, on a recent visit, pigs in a blanket. Decent salad bar (unusual in a Chinese place), lots of fresh fruit, ice cream, pudding, and even some pastries. Three or four soups, nice variety of sushi, egg and spring rolls. This is a favorite of my family.

I told my son we were gonna go to the the Chinese buffet and he said "Eeew!" I then had to reassure him that they had more than just Chinese food. When you walk into Jim's, they have Koi fish in a little pond under the bridge (enough to keep the kids busy while you pay the bill LOL). We sat down and were greeted by our server immediately. We got up and chose from chinese food (my favorite is Sweet & Sour Chicken), fried chicken, shrimp, potatoes, french fries, salmon, etc. I think they have sushi, too, but I'm not into that. They also have a nice salad bar. For dessert, they have jello jigglers for the littlest ones (like my daughter) but me and my son chose to have a cup of the hand-dipped ice cream. They do the kid's pricing according to their age, which is nice. My son loved getting his fortune cookie at the end. A nice place overall!
