Repulsive dog food is far too kind a description. Not sure if they have changed ownership or just the name and certainly not sure if it was good as fat toney's but this was by far the worst food I have ever been served in my life.

1 star is too generous. I'd give 0 stars if that was an option. I was in the city in December 2008 and I ate at this place. The ?User Review Guidelines? for this website state that it is ?unacceptable content? to reference certain conduct, even if true. The reason I don't recommend eating at this place is number 2 on the list of "unacceptable content." Also, after I ate here, I had a reason to check out the department of health's ratings and reports. I?d encourage others to read those reports before eating at this place.

The only positive review is written by ?RuggerBlues.? Read it carefully. It's bogus ? clearly written by the alleged ?new proprietor DOUG.? Pathetic. That's also ?unacceptable conduct? according to the ?User Review Guidelines.?

Stay away.

I can't even begin to describe my level of disappointment. I saw the high ratings and was really looking forward to trying their food. If you get a sandwich, be sure to get the Fat Toney's sandwich--their menu states it is a sandwich and a half. IOtherwise, the size is little better than Arby's Arbyque sandwich. No fries (although their Web site did say they had them). I got the beef sandwich and was expecting thick-cut pieces (like you would get at Bandana's or Super Smokers. Actually, from what I read, I was really expecting something like Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City--complete with burnt end sandwiches--but Fat Toney's was out of burnt ends; they were cooking). The beef was thin-sliced beef (like you get in the little packages of luncheon meats at the grocery store) with some sauce poured over it (after it was placed on the bread--and the sauce didn't even cover the meat, I had to dip it). Alone, the meat did not taste smoked, like it had been rubbed with anything, or seasoned in any way. Really sad.

The baked beans were wattery--not thick like mom used to make--and not very flavorful. The potato salad was somewhat better than the beans, but not much.

The most positve thing I can say is the bun the sandwich was made witjh was fresh. Never again.

Pros: Fresh bun for sandwich.

Cons: Everything else.

I visited Soulard this past wknd from Florida and it was good, inexpensive BBQ. The new proprietor DOUG has changed the menu and it was right on...I had a little of everything--it was fresh and warm and cooked right. Ribs were right on !! The place is clean, some remodeling taking place in restrooms but kitchen, floors and counters were very good to go. I drank in the neighborhood bars and I went back for more BBQ before we left.
GO IN SEE DOUG, he's cool. Talk to him about food, no just BBQ.
We spoke at length about what he wants to do because Fat Toney's reputation is bad and the name sounds like an Italian speak-easy. I think he's well on his way to making some people in the area notice.
I'll go back.

Pros: Good food, great location, nice people--catering available

Cons: Early closing but it beats eating cold or overcooked food.

Fluorescent lights, trays, paper plates, mediocre BBQ (which you can find anywhere in St. Louis) and HORRIBLE service. When we bought our meals the bill came to $20.37. I gave her $40.37, and was planning to give a generous tip in the form of whole dollar bills, but the overweight woman with red scraggly hair at the counter flat out refused to take the $0.37 in change I offered and insisted on giving me $19.63. She had the whole dollars, I saw them, but when I asked her why she just said, "$19.63" and pushed the change forward. Other than that stupid and annoying experience, the ambiance is terrible, food is adequate, but Smokin' Al's and Charlotte's Rib are both better, much better. And you don't have to deal with miserable service.

Pros: ok BBQ

Cons: Horrible service, closes early (9:00pm on Friday night), bad experience in general.

I will be the first to admit that BBQ is my first choice when it comes to eating out. But, I will say that I LOVE Fat Toney's BBQ Chicken sandwich basket with potato salad and fries. It really it the spot a few sundays ago. The sauce had a nice smokey flavor and the chicken was a good size with healthy servings of the sides.

PROS: Its GOOD!
CONS: Up in Soulard
