Kaita isn't one of the bigger name restaurants in japantown, but the lunch specials here are awesome. It's usually less crowded than gombei or minato, so a good place to sneak in lunch without the rush.

A cozy little Japanese sushi restaurant in the heart of San Jose Japantown. Came here for dinner when I was seriously craving some fresh raw fish. The Kaita Sushi (Chef's choice) combo came with 10 pieces of nigiri. I was delighted to find sunazuri and toro on my dinner plate. The nigiri were exactly how I like them to be - small bite size with a thin long piece of fish sitting nicely on top of the loosely packed rice. The quality of the fish was a little disappointing though. Sunazuri, toro and hotate were decent but I have had much better uni and ikura.

Overall I would say the sushi is 3.5 star quality. Rounding up because I like the friendly service and the cozy atmosphere.

Kaita's owner/chef prepares a variety of daily specials and regular menu items that are examples of some of the best Japanese cuisine in the San Jose area. The restaurant's sashimi is excellent. The Sake Ikura Don (salmon sashimi, cooked sake and ikura over sushi rice) is a house special not found at other restaurants. The accompanying soup and agedashi dofu are prepared with care and make this a delicous meal. Another house special is the Negitoro Don which also comes with soup and a side dish. Kaita's chirashi is also an excellent choice. Kaita has an extensive menu of great taste and value, but the daily specials are reminiscent of offerings in Japan.
