Two years ago, I found Annie Mess and she's been nothing less than exceptional! I travel from Houston and everytime she adds onto my back piece, I'm amazed. She always listens to my ideas and in return communicates them clearly in her renderings. I'm completely in love with my tattoos and have Annie to thank!!

Annie @ Resurrection

SHe is one of the most creative and imaginative artists I know.
I have several tatttoos from her and will be getting many more.
I always go in with an idea of what I want then Annie ads her ideas and the outcome is
more than I expected. Her colors are great and yes I get compliments all the time.
Thanks Annie you are so talented!

I have had several other "artists" tattoo me, but Annie is by far the very best. I had her do a piece about three years ago and was so impressed with the bright colors and shading that I went back again... and again. She has now done three pieces, one very large, on me. She also knows how to cover up very well! The colors are always brilliant, her design is wonderful, and her creativity really makes the pieces beautiful. The one thing about Annie that definitely stands out to me above everything else is her shading-- she doesn't just tattoo, it's like she is drawing. I get compliments on my tattoos constantly and anyone I know that asks where to get a tattoo I send to Annie.

I drove from Orange Texas just to let Annie do a black and grey cover up of two screwed up wings with a full arm piece of St. Michael slaying demons. That is my favorite tattoo I have because she did it from scratch with a sharpie, then went to work. It is also the one I get the most compliments on on both of my quarter sleeves. Thank you Annie for working with me and doing such a fantastic job.

I took my boyfriend to get a tattoo done by Anne for his birthday a while back and it was great. She stayed true to his requests and the finished product came out better than we could have imagined. She does fabulous work!!!

Let me start by saying that I had a small tattoo on my back so I was aware of how getting a tattoo felt. Well, touchee because Annie Mess has an extrememly light hand and each sitting was a painless joy. First off, her creativity is amazing. I went in with an idea for a quarter sleeve with the center piece being the foot of mercury. Annie neede a few days to come up with an idea and then promptly called me to have me come in for the first sitting. When i got there I was a bit nervous but with the mix of super nice people and great music I was fine. Annie's design was amazing and I loved everything about it. The rest of the sleeve she had decided to free hand on with a sharpy after she put the center piece down. And away we went. I ended up sitting 4 times i believe for 3 to 4 hours each time. Now that it is finished I am in love with my tattoo and Annie. The colors are super bright and it looks like a painting, a tattoo with feeling. Annie is outstanding and super caring. To be honest I was pretty sad when she finished it because that meant no mas visits. Our visits were very cathartic for me; not only was I getting a tattoo that really meant something to me, but my talks with Annie were great. She is so cool, and sweet; not to mention hilarious. So basically, I have already come up with another idea and am saving money in my piggy bank to go back. Let me add that it was worth every penny. This is quality artistic work and you should expect to pay for what you want. I mean this is her job and profession. What would you expect, this isn't the corner tattoo shop in Juarez. I would recommend Annie Mess to anyone. In fact I have already...thanks Annie, I love my tattoo!

I have a large back piece designed, created and conceptualized by Annie Mess. I have invested 36.5 hours of time and thousands of dollars into this tattoo, which I consider it a masterpiece! I met Annie on recommendation from another artist, who I had initially selected to for the work. He told me honestly that he could not deliver what I wanted - my garden on my back - in the way that I wanted - feminine, colorful, and three-dimensional without any heavy black outlines. This artist recommended Annie Mess. I did not know her, but I respected this man so much I that trusted her with this piece and what she has created mesmerizes and touches everyone who sees it. It is a highly detailed, colorful, and intense portrait piece. Every time somebody looks at it they see something they have not seen before?I am in awe of Annie's work and we will always be interconnected! I struggle to find the words to describe how I feel about the art I wear everyday that came from Annie's spirit. I gave her my ideas and I let her take the piece, as an artist, to the places she felt it could go. In return, I received the best possible gift - a tattoo that is in extension and representation of me. I enthusiastically promote Annie to everyone, anytime I can. Her price is reasonable and she has shown me great flexibility in the times available to work.

Pros: Private space for tattooing versus being in a large open area, great ambience

Cons: Parking is problematic

i got a huge leg piece by annie and while it took almost a year to complete it was very well worth it. she worked in everything i asked for, touched up everything that needed it and explained every detail and why she chose to do things any certain way. it was a great experience and i would most def. go back to her. great girl amazing artist clean and totally client oriented.
ps. i made the drive from houston to austin nearly once a month for a year for my appointment and can also say that annie never cancelled on me or made me wait.
great experience

Cons: not in my own home town!

After much research and portfolio searching, I settled on Annie Mess to do my first tattoo. I liked her immediately, she made me feel completely comfortable, interesting to talk with (important when you're sitting for a tattoo!), and not to mention- is VERY talented!!! The tattoo turned out wonderfully, I get TONS of compliments on it, and it's probably one of my favorite parts of myself. I've since had her do another larger piece which she designed from a poem I chose, and it also turned out amazingly and gathers lots of compliments.

Seriously, Annie Mess is a wonderful tattoo artist, I wouldn't go to anyone else!

I cannot agree with rosygrl. Pooey to the Annie dis.

Annie, honey, you are awesome. I know I have a really odd request with my sleeve (Strawberry Shortcake), but for Annie to take over from another artists work, I was truly amazed. She actually touched up areas that were not showing bright as it should. Coloring lips black, instead of the pink that the previous artist had done (which of course pink fades after a year or so). My sleeve is not yet finished, but I know I will continue to go to Annie for any work I have done. She even made lots of great suggestions, and understood exactly what I wanted.

I thrive on going to female artists because they have that girly sense that I am looking for, that delicate touch to each stroke of genius. You can't ask many men to work on a girly tattoo, because they just do not get it. Sorry for all you rockin' men tattooists.

Other items to mention:

1. I get lots of compliments on my unfinished work of Annie's
2. I continuously refer her to my friends and others that are curious about my ink
3. She is charming and witty
4. She is brilliant with colors and fine lines
5. She is better than other female artists I have met with in this town (I haven't met all yet, don't get offended girls)
6. Annie rocks the house
7. I plan on getting an Annie original one day. Scoping out some real estate now. ;)

Fini!

Cons: Can't think of a damn one!

I would (and have) suggested Annie Mess to any and everyone that comments on my tattoos. She has tattooed be 7 times (including my hand piece which is a work of art that she did for free!!) She is an amazing artist that took the ideas that I couldn't get out of my head and put them on paper...and then onto my body :) I am pleased with all of the work she has done on me, which is considerable (a back piece, sleeve, knuckles, hand, forearm....) she is fast and I think totally affordable for her skill level. She is also one of the only tattoo artists I know who has been able to master doing fine lines. Everything from small font to a delicate drawing of an owl, to the perfect pictures on my knuckles. Thank you Annie for being the most amazing tattoo artist I have ever come across, and I can't wait for our next session!

Annie is the bomb. I've been tattooed by 4 different artists and my piece by her is without a doubt the best one. Her use of colors is out of control and shes super friendly and helpful when deciding on what to do, not to mention well priced. I plan on returning to her for every tattoo i get from here on out.

I've been tattooed by about 20 different artists in Austin, and once I got one from Annie I haven't gone anywhere else. She's extremely communicative and easy to work with, she has a light touch and does brilliant work. Her prices are a little high, but good tattoos aren't cheap (and cheap tattoos aren't good).

In response to the last review about me (Annie Mess):

I pride on customer service, and the client never told me she was unhappy. At the end of the session she told me she was happy with the work and I assumed that we would continue with more color (greens and yellows) on the next session.
I would have been more than happy to change the design if she would have told me. I feel judging an unfinished tattoo is unfair. Waiting 4 months to post a bad review is also unfair.
She didn't contact me at ALL with her concerns. I bend over backwards to make my clients very happy. I wish she would have been more clear in her thoughts.
You can judge by my website that I do quality work and it saddens me that she couldn't come talk to me because I would have been happy to help her.
I thought that I was doing exactly what she wanted. I worked in the parameters she gave me. I wish the artistic process wasn't able to be fulfilled because she would have been happy with the work.

I had a tattoo done by Annie Mess in October, which I have since been having lasered to remove. My experience could have been the result of a horrible miscommunication (even though I was explicit in my description and brought in a finished tracing and color studies of what I wanted.) I should mention that I have a degree in drawing and painting. I wanted an addition of a fall maple leaf branch behind my previously existing tattoo of a vine of roses (which I loved), and what I got was a complete transformation of my once-colorful piece into a horrendous monochromatic one. Annie suggested that she go over what was there before to freshen up the lines, yet ignored my request to keep it delicate-looking. And since the piece was on the backside of my hip, I could not see that she was not only tracing over what was there before, but altering it to make it look like she wanted it to look. When I asked her about it, she said, "Well, I changed everything to look like the new piece because it would just look weird to have two different kinds of leaves in the tattoo." My fall maple leaves (and the entire piece) came out only brown and burnt orange- and everything looked dead. When I asked if she could at least throw some yellows and greens in to balance it out, she replied, "But green isn't a fall color." I asked why she had it in her palette and she said, "Oh, I guess I should have explained that- it was just there to make the brown with." I ended up paying her (a lot of money) for her time, and thankfully leaving before the thing was finished. I hate to make a fuss, but this was a terrible experience, and things like this should just not happen. Tattoos are not haircuts, and a tattoo "artist" should not just make executive decisions mid-tattoo, especially if their creative vision is so narrow they can't see why two different kinds of leaves might be in one tattoo. Although laser removal is excruciating and very expensive, I will be so glad when this tattoo is gone.

Beautiful art, beautiful soul, beautiful ink. The woman knows her stuff. She can bring a brilliance to your own art that you didn't know existed or create something from scratch as if she has know you your whole life. Great insight, amazing talent. Will never go to another artist.

I went in to Resurrection Tattoos knowing that I wanted a memorial tattoo for my grandmother, but not really sure what I wanted, or where I wanted it. I spoke with Roger, who helped me decide between the different styles I was considering, and suggested my bicep for placement of the tattoo. Because of the painting-like style I wanted, he recommended that I work with Annie. I was very lucky that she had a cancellation, and I actually got tattooed the day after I went in for a consultation. Everyone at the shop was friendly, and knew their stuff. My sister and I got to watch their talented body piercer, Dutch, do some piercings while Annie worked on my tattoo. I have seven other tattoos, but none of my experiences has ever, EVER been so wonderful. I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking to get tattooed, the folks here are truly artists. And they're pretty entertaining, too.

Every artist that works at Resurrection has a different style to accommodate anyone's tastes. They are nice and friendly with no egocentric attitude. I love the newly remodeled clean space!!
And, a documentary is being filmed there on cancer recovery and tattoo!
Book early as this is a very busy shop with lots of talented artists featured in magazines and The Chronicle!!!!

Over the past 15 years I have been tattooed by Tina, from her beginning in Florida to flying to DC and Austin for her amazing talents. She is an amazing and innovative artist who is really concerned about your satisfaction and asks for you to return to check out the healed product. She is also a pretty mermaid. No I am not an employee.

THANK GOD for Karen Slafter. I found her after a less than thrilling session (gross understatement) at Southside Tattoo. Some guy there (who I'm sure meant well) managed to talk me into exactly what I DIDN'T want going in. After that I was in full on panic mode about what in the hell to do about this monstrosity that was now displayed on my forearm for all the world to see. Enter Karen. From the moment I met her, I knew she was the ONLY person for the job. Super professional from the start, she listened to everything I wanted, assured me she would do her best to clean up the existing mess, and said she would draw something up. I should also mention that even though she's booked up to a month in advance (duh, she rocks!!) she knew how important this was to me and got me in ASAP. I had to sit for two sessions with Karen, each lasting a few hours. She has her own private space to tattoo and she's a freak about being sanitary, so all of her stuff is immaculate. She is very light handed (so much so that my tattoo healed in less than a week!!) and the tattoo time flies by because she's so friendly and charismatic. She didn't string me along...as soon as I was healed up properly she got me back in. i just finished my last session and she blew Southside away! Her work is better than anything I could have envisioned. All the right colors, perfect lines, just amazing. The girl oozes integrity and you can see it in all of her work. Bottom line - you can't go wrong with Karen Slafter!!

First let me say, I am already pretty well-tattooed. I have spent many hours under the tattoo gun.
After many years, I decided I wanted a new tattoo, and auspiciously was introduced to Karen Slafter the same week that I had mentioned it aloud. I gave Karen my idea, which she drew up and enhanced beautifully.
Karen is a truly gifted artist - and she cares about her client's needs. She works fast and with great precision.
Her ability to work with color/shading and the abstract is phenomenal...and after being tattooed many times, I must admit hers was somehow the least painful : ) I keep staring at my piece and everyone I show it to has the same immediate response - "WOW, that is BEAUTIFUL!"
If you want professional, artistic, and compassionate service, you will get it all. It is no wonder that she won best tattoo artist in a city full of them!

I recently visited Austin for a few days and made sure in my short time there that I had an appointment at Resurrection Tattoos. Karen's artistry made my idea a reality as she expanded on my concept design to create a tattoo that I'll be showing off for a long time. She was able to focus her attention to effectuate my intention in the most beautiful way. I highly recommend her and this shop!

My body is a container for holding sacred art. I design my work myself and then trust a superb artist to manifest the image onto my skin. Upon returning to Austin after 20 years away, I wanted a new piece to represent my return to my hometown. Only the "Best in Austin" would do...the beautiful, talented, and spiritual Karen Slafter was my destination at Resurrection Tattoo (Austin Chronicle voters called her the "Best in Austin" for three years running now...a major accolade). I now have a gorgeous piece on my shoulder that tells the story I wanted perfectly. Karen's contributions to my design lifted it to a truly heavenly space. Karen and I will dance again and again as I expand the canvas that is me. All the artists at "Rez" are superb. This is a clean, fun-spirited space to get all your body art needs met with professionalism and artistic talent.

I don't think I've ever been to a cleaner or friendly place before. Not only are the Artists good at what they do, I mean REALLY good, but the enviroment is exceptional. I would definitely recommend this shop to everyone I know. I am very pleased with the way my tattoo came out that I plan to riddle my entire body with tattoos from Resurrection and hope that I don't go bankrupt in the process. If your looking for a tattoo or just wondering how it all works, you should stop by, meet the staff, and they will help you find something that's right for you!

I'm a collector of sorts of tattoos and truly appreciate the artwork and the tatto exprience. Through all of my travels I have been in well over 500 tattoo shops both in the US and abroad and Resurrection is one of the nicest shops that I have been in! Karen Slafter has now done two pieces (first artist to do two pieces on me) and I have been extremely satisfied with not only the work that she layed down but also the total experience. I would definitely direct anyone to head down to Resurrection to see either Karen or any of the other fine artists that they have there. They will work with you to get the artwork that you want, where you want and in a way that will make the experience what it should be!!!!

Tina is the best artist I have ever encountered. Her art is innovative and the ink fantastic - in the last year Tina has created 7 different tattoos for me - each one beautiful. She really cares about you as a person and takes the time to ensure your tattoo is one you will enjoy and love forever. I highly recommend stopping by Resurrection and meeting the team - Roger, Tina, AJ and Bradley. You won't regret it:)

Karen has been working on me for almost 6 years now. Over this period of time, she has consistently provided me with the some of the most striking color work i've witnessed along with the absolute highest quality and up to date products on the market. Her attention to detail and cleanliness are unparalleled, and her self confidence and knowledge make you feel immediately at home. She is the most honest artist i have ever come across, and wastes no time in sharing her knowledge on what will work best for your body structure, skin type, and skin color as well, as well as providing extra ideas. I have constantly attempted to challenge her skills as an artist, and she consistently comes through in her presentation of my ideas. Don't let the seeming shortage of parking discourage you either, as there is more parking on the side. Once you get hooked on Karen, nothing else will do!

I would definitely recommend Karen Slafter. She was very nice, very thoughtful, and she really put A LOT of effort into my tattoos. I wanted tattoos of my dogs, but I didn't want them to be photo-realistic. I wanted them to be a little crazy and full of colors. I was afraid of getting a photo-realistic tattoo because I could spend the rest of my life thinking that they don't really look like the real thing. What's weird is that Karen did her own interpretation and drew up some really crazy dogs with wild colors, AND they totally look like my dogs. Weird, huh? She was really nice, really smart, down to earth, and just a cool babe. She also has a very gentle hand, so it's nice to get tattooed and not get your skin destroyed. She rocks. I love my tattoos.

I met Karen almost a year ago, when she was over at "the other place." Karen e-mailed me recently wanting me to come see her at her new "home" at Resurrection and so she could photograph her work on my back. I went in yesterday to see her at Resurrection and all I can say is "Wow! Resurrection is 1,000% better than the shop where she previously worked." We were greeted when we walked in the door by her friendly other co-workers, and the shop was clean, bright, and smelled fresh. Karen has a great new room in the back, with miniblinds and a door, for complete privacy, and I can't think of anything negative about her new home. To be able to claim that you have a Karen Slafter original makes you part of Austin's elite tattoo populus, and I am happy to be part of that exclusive club. Karen is kind, considerate, professional, intelligent, and one of the best artists you'll ever meet. Once you have been tattoed by Karen, you'll never want anyone else to ink you ever again.

A sterile hospital environment masked by art from floor to ceiling, Resurrection Tattoos is quickly becoming the best ink parlor in Austin. The shop is roomy and the staff is super friendly because they all are very good and, more importantly, love what they do. Recent ?Best of Austin? winner Karen Slafter works out of the shop, but everyone there is a cut above your typical street corner stabber. I have multiple tattoos from multiple cities and shops and vow not to go to anyone but Karen again (jury-rigged guns to give a lighter touch, excellent bedside manner, raw talent and years of experience are a potent combination), but anyone at Resurrection will do you right. You can bring in your own work, choose something from the wall or just give them a general description and they will come up with something that you will not be ashamed of ten years hence.
If you've always thought about getting one but haven't, now you have no more excuses.

I love all that Karen does. I just recently got pregnant, and talked to Karen about getting a tatto. Karen was really nice and told me no. There wasn't much online about pregnancy and tattoos, so I was glad that she was there to guide me in the right direction. I am thankful I have karen to do my tattoos. So I sit here pregnant gathering ideas until after the baby is born. I didn't just get tattos from Karen, I got a smart and well educated woman as a friend. Keep doing that awesome work that you do.

My husband and I have been going to Karen for several years and I always get compliments on her work!

I've been going to Karen exclusively for all of my tattoos for the last four years. She epitomizes professionalism, and the ideals of customer service. Having said that, she exhibits a personable manner, and makes me feel like a friend, and not just a client. She has created brilliant original designs that fulfilled my vision I described to her as well as other pieces that were already drawn (I have both black only and colored work from Karen). I have recommended her to everyone who asks me "Your tattoos are amazing, who did your work?", my friends, and even to my little sister when she wanted to get her first tattoo. Her workspace is always immaculate, and exceeds state regulations for hygiene. Her prices are extremely fair, she does outstanding work, and she creates an inviting, relaxing environment full of positive energy. I can't wait to get my next tattoo from her, as soon as we can match up both of our busy schedules.

After a bad first tattoo experience on the drag, I waited over ten years to committiing to another go at a tattoo. I have high expectations for the quality of design and artistic expression in all things, especially something that would always wear on my body. When I moved to Austin, I saw Karen's work and thought that I may have found the artist that I had been looking for. I presented Karen with a concept and rough draft of a tattoo and she surpassed my expectations of finnishing my rough draft and turning it into a unique statement that expressed exactly what I was looking for. For my next tattoo, I was inspired by working with Karen and I really pushed the envelope of what most tattoo artists or designers could acheive in a non-mechanicaly rendered medium. I was blown away again by Karen's work. After this experience, I realized what a rare talent she holds in her ability to execute a peice with not only exacting precision but also with the grace of movement and lines more common to an artsist equaly comfortable in oil paints or traditional art mediums.

I want to highly recommend Karen @ Resurrection Tattoo on South Lamar. I have gotten many tattoo's at other locations and this is one of the best shops and Karen is one of the most professional artist that I have delt with. Everyone at the shop is friendly and professional. I could go on and on about the quality of her work, but it really speaks for itself. If you want to get your tattoo by a true artist, not just someone who can trace and draw a little then make sure to go see Karen.

I was excited to learn Karen Slafter had moved to Resurrection Tattoos and went to schedule a new piece for my head, to join the beautiful one she inked waaaay back in 1991 (out of my 7, she's done 4, the other 3 were from before she worked in Austin). The space is scrupulously clean, well-lit and full of neato eye-candy. Everyone was very kind and professional- absolutely no cooler-than-thou vibe at all. The only drawback is that Karen is so dang popular! I did not want to wait even a day to hang out with her while she works her magic. She has a light touch and great chair-side manner, not to mention her peaceful vibe, awesome taste in music and excellent conversation skills- no small thing if you are going under the gun for several hours. I would and have recommended her to anyone thinking of getting a (or another) tattoo.

I have been getting tattoos for 10 years and for the past 5 I've only gone to Karen. Once you get one of her pieces you will never want to go to anyone else. She is friendly and fun, in addition to being a complete badass artist. i have brought in art work for her to work from and i've had several peices customed designed and all are amazing. She can do anything. The shop is super clean and all the artists and staff i've met have been great. It has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that put's you right at ease. Great for newbies and oldtimers a like! If you need an amazing tattoo, go see karen at Resurrection!

to merely say that there is nothing negative to be said about Karen Slafter's talents as a tattoo artist is complete understatement. she is bright, positive, articulate, professional and above all else, an artist. she has exceeded my expectations on both pieces she has done for me from artwork i have provided (in two very different styles of tattoing), and i anxiously look forward to my third, which will be a Karen Slafter original.

anyone who says differently about Karen Slafter's talents or demeanor is, in my opinion, persueing some other agenda and is not to be given any credibility.

I first found out about Karen from the best of. So I called her and was told to come by anytime, and she would be glad to talk to me. This would be my first tattoo so I was understandably nervous and trying to figure out what I wanted for sure. We talked for over an hour and by the time I left I felt totally at ease with her and my choice. I found Resurrection to be extremely clean and the music was cool. Karen is confident, yes, as she should be, but she is definitely not full of herself. Karen designed my tattoo from a general description I gave her and she was very careful as to explain why something was or was not a good idea. Yes I plan on getting another tattoo just as soon as I can, and you can bet I will only get them from Karen. I have recommended Resurrection and Karen to all my friends.

The first time I met Karen was at Southside Tattoo. Karen was the only one who gave me and my husband the time of day. Not just the time of day but Karen listened to what we wanted and made recommendations that only someone of her expertise could make. Karen is down to earth, friendly, confident and very knowledgeable in the History, background and meaning of tattoos. Karen makes the process easy from picking a tattoo out-whether it's something you bring in or in our case a Slafter Original, she quite literally can do anything you can imagine. I believe that might be the reason she has been Tattoo artist of the year 3 years running and was recently on the cover of the Chronicle. As far as the Resurrection Tattoo is concern they are fantastic. I agree with cgw1968 the music rocks! The place has a cool air about it, it's clean, bright and just right. Anyone who could see it otherwise is not in focus. As far as parking goes, there's a huge parking lot across the street and really does parking keep me from going to Homeslice, I think not!! Karen has done all of our ink. After Karen you won't go anywhere else!!

I met Karen Slafter when she did my daughter's shoulder piece a couple of years ago, and decided right away to have her design and ink my first piece. She's amazing with color, and she has a gift for translating what I describe when we're working on the design. I wouldn't go to anybody else. She understands that when I'm getting a tattoo it has meaning for me, and she works with me accordingly. Strangers are always commenting on how great the work looks (she's done designs on both my forearms so far), and I've never regretted them. She was also careful to explain the steps to care for my ink and expedite healing. When my birthday rolls around again next year, I'll be heading wherever she's inking :)

Karen Slafter is a great tattoo artist. She's friendly, outgoing and very down to earth. I got my first tattoo from her, and would not go to anyone but her for ink. Shes very creative and light-handed. If I have an idea for something, I can do a rough sketch or give her an idea of what I want. She can then take in my ideas and turn it into a great work of art. Shes very good about keeping things clean and sanitary - almost to the point of a germaphobe. I highly reccomend her, and have reccomended her to anyone who is looking to get their first tattoo, or just anyone looking for a good artist/place to get it from.
