Excellent food, good wine selection at a reasonable price, wait staff is well trained and has an excellent knowledge of the menu. The quality and presentation was well above most competitors. I was thrilled to see a waiter pour water without getting in the booth to accomplish his task.

The atmosphere was friendly, casual (no slobs), the staff and host was friendly, knowledgeable and went out of his way to make you comfortable and seat you appropriately. No loud over head music you could carry on a conversation at a normal speech level no shouting amplifiers necessary

A good experience as evidenced by several return visits with guests.

My husband and I tried this restaurant on a recent visit to Albuquerque after seeing it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. We loved everything about it! I've written an article about it that contains details on the food we ordered as well as the service available on Associated Content. Search Lauren Blackketter and "Restaurants to Try Albuquerque New Mexico" (Citysearch wouldn't let me publish the link)

Pros: Great service, amazing food

Cons: Only wine, no full bar

I went to this restaurant because I saw it on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. I love the show but I do have to say that it was not as good as I would have thought it tasted. Maybe it just looks so good on TV and I had different expectations.

I do have to agree with the other reviews regarding the service taking longer than normal. Although it took longer for us to get our food and such I don't actually view this as a bad thing. I take the eating out experience as a night out with family and friends and time spent at the table is meant to be enjoyed. If I wanted a quick meal I would have hit a drive thru. I tend to enjoy restaurants that take their time because it allows me to settle down. So whether or not the wait times is a result of lousy service or just a different approach towards the dining experience, I see this as a good thing.

I ordered the meatloaf wrapped in bacon with gravy and asparagus because of the TV show. I saw how it was made and it is all made from scratch which is what I love about Standard Diner, but I thought the meat was a little too sweet for my tastes but you can definitely taste the freshness of the food.
I have also had the chicken fried ahi tuna dish. This has been my favorite dish because I love sushi and eating raw tuna is one of my favorite things. I would have preferred to see more red in the tuna because I thought they may have cooked the fish a little too long but the guacamole wasabi sauce that they top it off with is great. For sushi or sashimi lovers, this is a different twist on it but I think that you will love this dish especially with the wasabi sauce.
These two dishes are what make this place enjoyable for me and it intrigues me at the creativeness of the dishes which makes me want to try more. I just wish they could expand their menu a little more because I am intrigued at what the chefs at Standard Diner could come up with.
I can see why some people may be turned off by this place but I enjoy the atmosphere and I take a different approach at dining out. I also love how creative a place like this can get with their menu.

Cons: Not what I expected

Took 10 minutes for server to acknolwedge our presence, took 10 more minutes to get our beverages, took another 40 minutes to get our lunch, constant excuses from the server while he was trying to settle problems at the table next to us, our order was wrong, tried to tell hostess of our problems and she was too busy yakking with friends to care. I wrote an honest assessment of our experience on a survey card only to be placed on their email SPAM list. No concerned follow up or apology for the poor experience. Oh, to top it all off our server offered to comp the tea and coke to make us feel better about the lousy performance. What a joke!! The place wasn't even that busy - plenty of open tables.

Pros: None that day

Cons: SLOW service, cold entrees, bland flavors

The extensive brunch menu, will make your mouth water. They have wonderful combinations. Start your lunch with an onion brick of thinly sliced onions encrusted with a delicate buttermilk batter and served with hand-smashed garlic aioli. Their sweet potato fries are beyond ordinary and served with a Spanish bleu cheese sauce. For dinner try their-FISH TACOS-- Albuquerque South Valley corn tortillas, grilled Pacific swordfish, Napa cabbage slaw,
fresh grilled pineapple salsa and lime aioli. Not your typical diner, really a great place to have a superior meal!

I was so eager to try this place, as I love diners and "comfort food" - alas I was sorely disapointed. Let me start off by saying kudos to the delicious food: tasty, creative and stove hot (because who enjoys their entre cold?). But unfortunately, that's about all this place has going for it. The key to a great resturant is an attentive and reliable waitstaff. The Standard Diner does not have that. Our waitress finally came to take our drink order about 10 minutes after we were seated - tack on another 10 minutes to actually get the drinks (not mixed, both were from bottles). She forgot the water we requested (she also was lax in refilling the glass). After 15-20 minutes after ordering our meal, they finally brought over some bread and oil. She forgot the side salad my fiance ordered and finally asked "did no one every bring you your salad?" A whopping 35-40 minutes after we ordered our dinner - we were served with it. Again - lax service - our waitress stopped to ask only how it was, as an afterthought - she was walking by and then stopped to come back to ask.
To her credit she asked if she could bring me another beverage from the bar "on the house", but only at the end of our meal, right before we were leaving. She did not extend this offer to my fiance who had a glass of wine.
While we recognize that being a server is tough - this took the cake as the worst service I have ever had - and it was a slow night, with lots of empty tables. (It's quite possible she was distracted by the booth behind us - it was full of her friends)
It's a pity the Standard Diner has such bad service, because it does have other things going for it - as mentioned before the excellent food and a unique setting...but those can not outweigh the waitstaff and their lack of caring or service.

Pros: Great twists on traditional comfort food

Cons: terrible service from the waitstaff

The food and the Standard Diner is more interesting than most fare in ABQ. The service has been less than good on two of four visits. Long waits for drinks and food and forgotten dishes shouldn't really be happening when you have two or four people at off peak times of the day. On the upside, I actually think prices are comparable to Flying Star, for instance, with the quality of food far superior.
