Fun place with decent sound in the music venue. Cool hotel attached in case you need to spend the night.

A great lounge, especially if you're seeing a show downstairs. Also, one of the go-to places for out of town visitors. Breakfast and happy hour are great, while service can be hit and miss. I love the fries.

It real has by far the worst breakfast for a place of this reputation. The dinner/appetizers are great, just NEVER NEVER NEVER go for breakfast.

The breakfast is bad... and not hip hop bad where it means good, but regular old bad that

I went in and it seemed nice enough... got the happy hour wine for $3 and some appetizers for $3 as well. Went out walked around and came back to have a beer. Then went to buy my ticket for the show... the Legendary Pink Dots were playing and I even saw them eating there but when they check my ID to get in they tell me that I can't see the show cuz they'll lose their liquor license if I watch a band playing downstairs. Nevermind that they JUST served me 2 different alcoholic beverages... so I tell them I just moved here and haven't gotten a new ID yet and that even though the one I have is expired it still reflects my age. They don't care, they just tell me too bad and to come back next time. I didn't come to their stupid bar to drink but I did; I came there to see a concert so the fact that they will let me in later when I get a new ID doesn't really matter to me. This is the last show on the LPD tour too... so who knows when they'll be back and who knows if I'll ever get to see them again. They were mean and unyielding even though it wouldn't have hurt them any to let me in to see the show. I was clearly old enough to serve alcohol to. I plan on taking it up with the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

This bar is totally awesome inside! The decor is like a hunting lodge from the Jetsons! I went to see a show there last night and had a pretty good time but I do have a few gripes. The sound system was excellent and the drinks were strong,

I would also like to preface this review with a sigh...this bar used to be one of my favorites as well. You used to get great service, great food, and friendly faces. ALL of which has been lost.\r

I agree 100% with the last three reviews of the Doug Fir. The service is terrible, it's overpriced, their staff are rude and inconsiderate, and their security is the absolute worst! Me and a group of friends, which included a pregnant

I mistakenly went on a double date last night to DF. We sat and waited for 20 minutes on a slow night to boot. No greetings or acknowledgment from one of the 4 servers at all. I finally went to the bar to order a drink and was told to wait. My wait was actually due to the personal conversation (didn''t seem to care that I can hear) he was having with the other person behind the bar. We finally left and I was walking out I heard the 2 guys behind the bar laughing. Never again.

I was surprised when I walked in to Doug Fir restaurant for a breakfast meeting this morning to see only one other table seated. When the "hostess" eventually seated me, I realized why. She was simply annoyed that I'd walked in the door. It was breakfast - a little heavy, a little bit of a limited menu, but overall fine. That surly hostess just sort of set a rotten tone. She should be unemployed.

My husband and I decided to stop by for dinner a few weeks ago. We love the look of the place, the 70's design is awesome. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday night, which should have been our first clue. When our host tried seating us at a tiny table, we asked for a booth and it seemed to destroy his night. He threw our menus down on an empty booth and walked away. We decided to order an array of appetizers: some bourbon steak bites, calamari and spinach dip. It took forever to get our food! The steak bites were so gross and slimy, they literally fell apart atop the stale toast they were served with. It tasted like dog food. The calamari was complete rubber, and ice cold. I couldn't even eat the spinach dip, that was also served with stale toast. My husbands ice tea wasn't fresh brewed, but LIPTON with lemon flavoring and we never received refills on water. I am so sad to say that we will NEVER eat at Doug Fir again. We wasted time and money that we will never get back. If you're looking for some groovy 70's atmosphere, tune out the Doug Fir and tune in to the "Brady Bunch" instead.

Way too crowded! Way too trendy! The dinners are alright but pricey (the late night happy hour is a good deal, though), and the drinks are well made and creative. It's a beautiful space, but can be dark and confusing if you're trying to eat dinner. The bar area is always packed, and the seating can be difficult (weird ottomans? two booths?). The Doug Fir basement is much better- the bands that come are interesting and the space is designed to hold an appropriate number of people.

I had breakfast at Doug Fir, and it was alright. It wasn't anything special, but the ambiance was nice. The service was friendly and efficient. I also have been there at night and it can get extremely crowded and uncomfortable. If you can get a seat outside during the summer, it can be pleasant, but otherwise it is like fighting to get a seat, or even to find a path to the restroom.

We moved to Portland recently and kept seeing the Doug Fir when we drive up Burnside. It's really cute inside and out. My boyfriend and I went there on a date on a weeknight to try it. He ordered a steak which he said was good but it was really small for the pricetag.

I'm vegan and I was told my only option was the expensive pasta. It had a lot of very large olives in it. Do not order this dish unless you really really like olives. When I say "like" I mean you are passionate about them and you would chose olives as one of your three items you are taking with you to a desert island. We ordered drinks which were mixed very weak. Maybe we should have gotten beers. Does beer go well with olives? We will be coming back for the music but probably not the food.

Pros: Very very cute, central location

Cons: not much parking, food wasn't very good for the price, only one vegetarian option

The food there is awful, I had the tomato soup, tasted like reheated pasta sauce, and then my main course was the Sheppards Pie, also a complete disaster. This place should be closed !!!! The menu and cooks need serious help.

I really really really want to like this place - cool ambiance, location etc. But there are some things that just can't be overlooked. I haven't had the bad service issues that some other reviewers had, but the overall attitude just sort of lacking something. The food is okay ... the Hawthorne pasta is actually pretty good. But it's just not good enough for the price. Some of the other items I've tried have been of about the same quality as what you'd find at a okay diner. Like I said, I really want to like this place, but just average is all I can muster for a recommendation.

We met some friends for dinner last saturday to catch up after a 16 year separation. I called ahead and was told that reservations weren't necessary for a 6:00 dinner spot. Our friends arrived first and were refused a table until the entire party arrived. Once all four of us were there, we had dinner (not great food, by the way), dessert, and paid the bill. About 15 minutes after the bill was paid (and the tip, of course),our server approached the table and told us that although he had enjoyed our presence, other people would like to eat. In other words, "get out," I was stunned having NEVER before been kicked out of any public place let alone one in which I was a paying customer. We left immediately and noticed that the lobby was empty. Where these hungry customers were, I do not know. The manager has yet to return my call. When I returned to work, I relayed the story to a co-worker and she told me that "Doug Fir is the place to go if you want to be abused a little." So, if you are after mediocre food, decent ambience, and have a penchant for a heaping side of abuse with your garlic mashed potatoes, Doug Fir is your place! I will not be returning; Neither the food nor the service merit another visit.

Pros: clean, well decorated

I've eaten at Doug Fir several times, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The service is always pretty bad and the food is mediocre. Recently 6 of us went for dinner and were made to wait 30 minutes for a table in a half-empty dining room. Then as she was seating us, the server said we would all have to pay on one check and that 20% gratuity would be added automatically. We found this pretty tacky since we hadn't asked about it. Or if she was going to tell us, she should have said it in the first place, not after we had waited so long for a table. When we finally sat down, most of us had lost out appetites. I had a bowl of soup that arrived cold and we couldn't get anyone to refill empty drinks and water carafes. None of us will be eating at Doug Fir again. Do yourself a favor and head down the street to Le Pigeon where for only a few bucks more you can get a fantastic meal with exemplary service.

We stopped into The Doug Fir one Sunday for a nice lunch. We had family from out of town and thought they would really dig it. The service was extremely slow - dissapearing after getting our drinks. We had a bloody mary spilled on us, a meal dropped onto our table off the plate, and servers who seemed to not know how to wait tables. Nothing was done to make up for the horrible service and when we asked if they were going to do something they laughed and walked away....that's right, laughed and walked away. We will NEVER return which is a bummer because the decor and style is fun, but you can't eat the decor!

Sadly, despite the cool decor and architectural design, the service in this over-priced restaurant will leave you with a very bad taste in your mouth. Etiquette, and common sense, would be the desired ingredients for happy customers and great tips. They should buy the staff some with the money they charge for mediocre food. Don't fall for the hype. Go for drinks in the bar but skip the sitting-down-to-eat part.

The doug fir is alright but if you go ther after a show at the Bossanova, be sure and leave before anyone else and get a table, otherwise you are screwed.

PROS: cheap decent food, opened way after bars close
CONS: its kind of a 'scene'. A bit uppity for no apperant reason.

I wasn't too impressed with the food or the service, but the atmosphere was pleasant. Given a little time to get established, this could a more exciting menu going.
