I have been going to the Elephants Deli for years, since I first moved to Portland fourteen years ago and lived in the Uptown neighborhood.
The service there has ranged from indifferent to unacceptable. On a couple of occasions I have walked out the door without what I came for, swearing to myself that I would never come back. Some of the employees seriously need to get over themselves.
The food is invariably good, sometimes excellent. That is what has kept me coming back occasionally.
I won't be a regular until their customer service comes up to an acceptable level, and that's not likely.

Today I went to Elephant's for the first time. I'm new to the neighborhood & every single time I've mentioned my new location Elephant's has been brought up and raved about!

My husband & I decided to try it this evening, and let me tell you - we will definitely be back. They have a great selection of unique drinks, candies, breads & cheeses. We ordered some calamari & sliders and they were delicious! The sliders were AMAZING.

The staff was more than helpful! I have no complaints at all. The wait for food was a little lengthy, but that's about it.

i love the fact that there are so many choices... i never get tired of eating here. they have the best grilled shrimp at the deli counter, that i tend to get with a side of grilled vegetables, or maybe noodles. their soups are delicious as well - always a great selection - hard to decide!
it's also great to get things to go when you don't feel like cooking, but don't feel like dining out.
great, great food!

This place serves so much food that sometimes they do go wrong, but for the most part the food is really very good. People who complain about the price are out of their minds. For what you get, it is an excellent value. I can go to the "stepping stone cafe" or a similar establishment in this neighborhood, pay MORE money for a meal that is a big plate of steaming slop or go to elephants and get excellent food for slightly less money. (And if you go there at the right times, you can often get an amazing deal on some of their casseroles!) I've always found the service here to be good. Everyone is friendly-especially the guys who work behind the bar. And you get free refills on coffee.

Cons: good luck finding a table around lunch time!

I could eat their tomato/orange soup everyday! Their melted tuna sandwich isn't bad either. The fact that they are fast and located by my office makes this a frequent lunch spot for me.

The food at Elephants Delicatessen is always fresh and good. Stop in for lunch and see what the fabulous hot food items they have, the scalloped potatoes are my favorite. Pick up some cheese and a roll you've got lunch. Parking is sometimes busy, be patient they open up fast.

It's a shame to see such a great place employ such RUDE people. They act like they are too good for their job, like customer's are an annoyance they simply don't need. I also heard one of the guys swearing like crazy behind the counter. Don't get me wrong, I don't think swearing is the end of the world, but there where tons of children in the place. Bottom line, the place has yummy, overpriced eats and a rude staff that needs to get over themselves.

Going there is always a special treat. I LOVE their chocolate malteds. I think they are the best I've ever tasted. A good place to take out of towners.

Elephants is great for lunch because you don't have to commit to having anyone thing... I like to pick out little pints of salads and macaroni and cheese to make a smorkshaborg (sp?) of food. Today my good girlfriend and I sat at the bar and I had this delicious bowl of mama leone's chicken soup (which is lovely on it's own) in a great onion cheese bread bowl. It was so impressive and was just on the spot. We had great customer service, especially from the bar tenders.

Don't believe the hype about this place. Horrible management, & most of the staff I experienced were more interested in navel-gazing than working. The wine selection was virtually nonexistent, & of mediocre quality. The cheese department wasn't much better. Poorly maintained products, unimaginatively displayed, cookie-cutter selection, & the young woman working there never addressed me once (nor the nice man next to me who rolled his eyes). She avoided eye contact as much as possible. With one exception, the place was a severe disappointment. The exception was one young woman tossing pizza dough or something, who was as sunny as can be. Everyone else was a complete tosser, especially the know-it-all know-nothing manager. This review is being written by a food & wine professional with many years of high-end experience.

Pros: no gum on the floor

Cons: everything else

My family eats here at least once a week! The sandwiches are to die for, expecially the jamone al fromage. The only down side we can find is that a "few" of the help are shall we say a little pretentious. Other than that, if you want a great lunch or a great pick up and go meal, this is your place. And don't forget to save room for dessert!

Overpriced and I agree with the review below the quality has gone way down hill. Everything seems to be focused on profit and ease of service not quality anymore at Elephants

My husband and I are West hills regulars. We love Elephants! I love the consistent dedication to good food and good favorites. I love that it carefully took over a great space vacated by Il Fornio.

Let's not forget that it is a deli and not a restuarant.... elephants gives every normal holdiay a reason to stay home, find a great picnic spot or a romantic view AND have great food without the hassle, tip or pretense. How could this be missed by some critics? Every birthday or valendtines day is a reason to shop at Elephants and set the mood vs. spending a lot of money for long waits at great resturants.

It is also by the way the best of fast (but good )food restaurants...I frequently have lunch with my 4 1/2 year old for less money, with better food, in a great environment than McDonalds.

Let's face it Elephants doesn't seem to have the quality once given in not only service but also the food. The new place yes has plenty more seating but it doesn't give you that warm fuzzy feeling we us to get when we went to the uptown shopping center. Parking is better yet it was almost like when you got a spot at the old space you felt you were really going to the IN place to be, now its the place to pay for over priced food. I also noticed so many different faces behind the counters, its not like it use to be.

A great spot to pick up an instant picnic or just cozy up at a table with cup of soup and crusty bread. The new location puts you further from other shops, but has the bonus of parking and more counter space which equates to more food options.

I work in NW and regularly visit Elephant's 2-5 times a month for sandwiches and salads.

On my visit today, I realized that every employee I've dealt with at Elephants is unfriendly. The cashier doesn't smile when I approach and stuffs my items into the paper bag like she hates to be bothered with it. The sandwich guys are always irritated when I want a fresh sandwich made, instead of one that's been sitting in the cold case for hours.

The only reason I still shop there is because of the convenience. It's really a shame that someone hasn't opened a similar place, but with nicer staff.

Elephants new space is incredible! For those of you that don't know, they took over the space what was formerly the restaurant Il Fornaio-one of the most beautiful builings around. They have a full bar with superb cocktails made by Lucy Brennan (Mint/820) just for Elephants....and the cheese, oh my god--this is got to be the best place in Portland by far to get your gourmet dairy fix.

You almost can't beat Elephants for the quality and selection of to the go foods, bread, desserts and wines.
That being said, I have been there many times and been treated well..... however....
Sunday I showed up early in my grubbies on the way to do a few chores. The lady behind the deli counter did almost everything she could to avoid answering my questions and when I did decide what to buy she acted as if it were a nasty job.

Maybe that comes from dealing with the upscale crowd, but judging someone by the way they dress is just silly-rude.

Elephants used to be one of my favorite places to browse and find well prepared and eclectic foods and spirits. I still enjoy the pachiderm, but someone changed the compound. The framiliar layout has been modified, cold cases changed and diminished and some very remarkable products removed from supply. We all go through cost cuttings, but this one reduced choices and selection. Don't forget what got you to be one of the most popular places in NW....

This restaurant will amaze even the most ardent shopper on 23rd. The first time a walked inside, I was amazed at the selection of cheeses this place had. Then we went to the bakery. We found the perfect dessert selection for my sister-in-law's birthday dinner. Under the display case glass was this marvel of modern cake baking. Elephants had produced a fruit tort that defy words. It had three seperate cakes that were so wonderfully delicious that I would have been satisfied with just that, but they went further. They put this cream between each layer that was beyond silk. Next came a copious amounts of strawberries, rasberries, and blueberries. The result was truly awe-inspiring! Sad to say that this tort is no longer available, but they have other wonders that will amaze you to no end (try the tomato-orange soup!)

We tried to hit breakfast at one of several of our favorites, but everything was pack. We ended up at Elephants (after arguing) to grab a bite for breakfast.
We were very happy with our choice. I got the breakfast blt (outstanding!) and she got some soup and a cookie. Not your traditional breakfast place, but they had what we needed and everything we ate was excellent. Even got a few treats to go and they were incredible. Looking for an excuse to go there again.

First off, I don't want to read any complaints about parking. I live across the street (from Elephants) and have seen and heard my share of bad driving and honking. It's a neighborhood deli. Not for one to drive across town in their Mercedes SUV and congest my street.

Next, the food. I had the "wild mushroom soup" yesterday for lunch, and it couldn't have been any better. The bread is consistently good, the cheese selection is great (a close first to City Market), and the deli items are tasty.

The only negative comment I have, is for the busy lunch time, or weekend rush. The store is small and it gets a bit scrunched once in a while.
