Skagit Family Learning Center

SFLC is a great program for homeschoolers (or as another reviewer put it "home-based" learning). Not only does it offer flexibility to homeschoolers, but also support and community. My children get to attend classes there, while at the same time having all the advantages of homeschooling. One of the best parts of this program are the people who run the program. To say that they are nice is an understatement. They are truly kind and caring people that go out of their way to make the program work for you and your family. This program really helps make homeschooling a success. I highly recommend the Skagit Family Learning Center.

PLEASE BE AWARE: Enrolled students no longer "homeschooled" (home-based)

Skagit Family Learning Center, a Parent Partnership alternative learning program of the Mount Vernon Public School District, offers support to families who have prior homeschooling experience and choose to enroll a child in the program. Please note that the legal term for what is commonly referred to as "homeschooling" is actually "home-based" education.
It is unfortunate that Skagit Family Learning Center (SFLC) has advertised itself as providing "Homeschool Support", when in actuality, a student's status changes once enrolled in this program and he/she is no longer considered homeschooled (home-based). Parents are listed as the primary teacher, but they must complete a yearly Student Learning Plan including learning goals and books/materials used, report hours spent learning both on-site and off-site, be under the direct supervision of a certificated teacher and meet regularly with that advisor. Alternative learning programs such as SFLC must meet these requirements in order to receive state funds.
An enrolled student at SFLC no longer falls under Washington State's Home-Based Education law, but is under an Alternative Education law which pertains to, among other things, alternative high schools meant to target at-risk students. Also, students enrolled in SFLC as full-time students are required to take public school assessments, such as the WASL, as any other student enrolled in a 5-day-a-week public school.
Before you make a decision about this program, please read the school's information carefully, ask questions and be sure that it is truly what you want for your children. I know of many families that have been helped by this program, but there are many others who have been very disappointed.

This homeschool support program is a cut above the average co-op of homeschoolers getting together for supplementary classes and socialization. Operating under The Alternative Learning Experience WAC 392-121-182, the parent is recognized as primary teacher. Program offers core curriculum classes in reading, writing, math, science, history, computers as well as enrichment classes--art, music, language, sewing knitting. No charge to families--utilize FTE funding--I have 4 kids enrolled--we love it!
