Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Tapping into a growing trend, this full-service salon was designed with the modern man in mind. Many locations provide complimentary beverages (read: beer) and some strategically set up TVs so guys can pass the time watching sports while getting their toes buffed. Classic barbershop services include haircuts, color and hot towels, but newer takes on male grooming go as far as mini facials, skin-conditioning paraffin hand dips, scalp massages and waxing services.

Key Points

  • All Occasion Gift Certificates
  • Employee Benefit Programs
  • Groom Wedding Packages

The Inside Scoop

  1. Look Good - For a head-to-toe transformation, indulge in full-body packages created for stress relief, professional-looking appearances and more.
  2. Hair Color - Going grey? Request the camoflauge coloring services, which will darken your hair. If you'd rather look like you've been sailing for a month, opt for "quick tips," which lightens hair at the edges.
  3. Know Before You Go - Boys under 12 as well as teenagers, or young men as the salon refers to them, are also welcome to come in for services.
  4. Hair Removal - Waxing services touch upon the chest, back, neck and eyebrow.

Cool Place

by max d.

I received a gift certificate from my wife about a year ago. I recently got a call from the salon reminding me that I hadnt used it yet and hoped that I come in soon. I was so surprised that they called me as I had forgotten about it. I also know that most businesses almost hope you dont ever use them. So I decided to schedule an appointment which included a haircut, mens manicure and pedicure (which I had never had before). I was very pleased with the services I received. I never realized how good having my feet taken care of was. I liked how they treated me and plan on going back as a regular customer. It was real cool that they wanted me to try them out more than just keeping the money my wife had spent.

Fun men's salon

by Sarit S. | insider Insider | Rank: 18,962

My husband recently tried this men's salon and really liked it. For the first time in his life he got to be pampered while getting his hair cut. In addition to a shampoo and scalp massage, a hot wax treatment for his hands was part of the deal.

This place works for me

by B Hershal

I got my hair cut with Doris today and she did a great job!

I really love the cut and the layers. She was pretty cool in helping me decide because I'm not very good at making decisions when it comes to getting a new haircut (they stylist usually knows best). The mini scalp massage during the shampoo was good too, I love scalp massages.

Everyone was friendly, funny and professional. They also had ESPN on to watch. Definite thumbs up for that.

I wouldn't normally spend as much on a haircut (as a man with thin hair) but this was worth it. Doris was really, really great :)

Once a great place, but no more.

by CDBN

The death of a great salon. Once a great place to get a fabulous haircut and other male grooming services.

My boys and husband have been clients for several years. Over the past 2 years the girls have started to dress like they have just rolled out of bed, are consistently late and the quality of service is just not there any longer. The disorganization of this salon is maddening when you have a schedule to keep, a job to go to and children with activities to attend.

It would appear that AM cannot keep a receptionist for very long and it is a constant battle to receive your discounts and to get them to write down your appointment for the correct date and time.

The last straw was approximately 3 weeks ago when the phone calls from the salon started to come in asking us not to take calls from our regular stylist. Saying she had been fired along with other information that customers need not be privy to. Messages were left on both my husbands cell phone as well as our home phone. Now we are being harassed to make appointments. This will NOT happen.

My greater concern is allowing my children to get their haircuts while the 'adults' talk about subjects not meant for little ears. The owner is a dramatic mess and seems to always be on edge. Listening to how he speaks to staff and people on the phone is not only uncomfortable, but very unprofessional.

The quality of services has drastically declined and is definitely not worth the premium pricing. I take pause to how the stylists dress now and wonder how much of the $50.00 per cut they are receiving when the stylists seemingly do not even own anything more than tank tops, old jeans, t-shirts and jogging pants. Definitely not something one expects when the salon advertises its name as being a luxury salon and spa and charges as if they are one.

Although we are sad to see a once nice place go, we are happy with the new salon my husband found for the males in our family. May the original American Male Salon and Spa rest in peace.

Pros: None

Cons: Drama, incessant calls, bad business practices, owner

A great Value for what you get.

by rskater

It's nice to not worry about my haircut. I can just sit back and let them handle it. It's a great place for a guy to come and not be intimidated like it is at a beauty parlor with chatter, chemical smells and a noisy atmosphere. The last place I was going to was crazy with everyone talking with each other while they worked me. I felt like I was just a dog getting groomed and was going to get a pat on the head and bandana around my neck when I was done LOL.

Here, no matter what stylist I have they're friendly, capable and care about how I look and focus on me. I have also tried other things that a hair cut and it's nice to get it done all in one place and with the same person.

Pros: it's all good

Cool Mens Salon

by dnewsome

Just moved to the area and setting up where to go for all the places I need such as a place to get my hair cut and other stuff. I found the salon cool and was happy with my cut. The stylist was Lynn and she help me with a new look with some color highlights. She took the time to work with me but it didn't take a lifetime to get done. I found the price resonable and about what I had been paying in Seattle. I ended up getting a package for six haircuts so it's even cheaper. It's nice that I can go back there or free clean up in between my appointments too. People were friendly and had snacks and sports on the TV. Parking lot was tight cuz they're near Trader Joe's though.

Pros: Comfortable, friendly place, stylists was very good

Cons: parking a bit tight in the mall

Discounts may not be real

by tommy3827

The haircuts are OK but the "Just In Time" program seems to be a trick. My last four appointments were all "Just In Time" appointments, where you get a discount since you're taking a last minute slot that someone else canceled. When it came time to pay, the cashier "forgot" to give me the discount and I had to remind them, else they'd charge me the maximum rate. I can understand forgetting one time but all four times they forgot. I don't know if it's deliberate or they're just really disorganized. You have to stay on top of them, which frankly I resent. Their advertised discounts don't count for much if they only honor them under duress.

Great Place

by tstewart02

I found out about American Male Salon by a coworker. He has been going to them for a couple of years, so I decided to give them a try. I really had been having a tough time the place I had been going to. The stylist I had just couldn?t cut my hair the same way twice but I liked her so I just kept going back (yea kinda dumb). American Male charges a little more than I had been paying but not that much, plus I can go back for a free clean up so to me it is good deal. They take notes on how I want my hair cut so I get the same results every time and I have had two different stylists. It can get frustrating getting an appointment last minute though so you?ll have to call a couple of days ahead or make your next appointment before you leave. I recently have been trying other services such as a back wax and the men?s facial treatments. I really think it is cool to get them done without feeling weirded out. If you are looking for a good place for all the services for guys check them out. It is by no means a frilly, smelly beauty shop or bunch of old barbers

Pros: nice atmosphere and people who know what they are doing

Cons: hard to to a walk in for a hair cut...but ok if call and make an appointment

Great haircut, but...what happen to the beer?

by dktownsend

Great haircut, great products & very friendly & knowledgeable staff, but....
AM markets themselves as an extraordinary salon catering to men (& serving micro brews...cool concept); however, upon arrivel I was offered a "water or soda". I thought to myself, that's strange, all of the editorials I read mentioned something like, "guests are greeted with a micro beer". I have constant access to bottled water, juice & soda at my office, the gym and at home...so why would I or any other guest want more "water or soda"? I didn't want to say, "hey where's my beer", so I just sat there in the lobby comtemplating and reconciling my expectations with the PR campaign. No hard feelings AM... I will be back, but please correct the leaks to the on-line press or let your receptionist know that when a customer walks in, you offer them a cold one.

Pros: AM listens & delivers personal service

Cons: Didn't seem very unique to justify a 300% increase in the costs of a haricut

I'm happy to stop the butchering

by samwilson2002

I'm happy to stop the butchering. After almost three years of qoing to the cheap 15 minute places that are truly not that SUPER or GREAT, I found American Male Salon. Yea it is more than what I had been spending, but then my girlfreind spends almost a hundred bucks on herself. I finally had a true professional hair stylist spend the time to care about and figure out how to cut my hair. The extras included were different than what I expected but nice and didn't add much time. And in between cuts I get to go in free for a clean up around my neck and ears so to me it is a good deal. It's not a foo foo place and they really want me to feel comfortable about other things I can get done there.

Total waste of Time

by badhairexperience

Was looking for a good hair cut experience, ready to pay $50. When I called, I was asked all these questions, gave them my address, where I heard about the place and all that, the girl on the phone was actually quite nice. So, I make a morning appointment, take off from work and rush down there so I wouldn't lose to much time working, when I get there, I was about 7 minutes late, the girl at the shop has no appointment booked for me, she did see that I was 'signed-up' the day before but an appointment was never made. This really isn't cool. BUT....the girl had the great idea of me waiting there for 30 minutes until somebody came to cut my hair, though they were already supposed to be there. I know stuff like this can happen but if they want to charge high end prices for men's hair cuts (have been to many top salons around the world and $50 is not anywhere close to the cheapest) you better ensure that customers are taken care of properly. Sorry, I had to score this place this low...missed out on time/money because you're incompetent.

Pros: hmmmmm??????

Cons: unorganized, 100% guarantee? where was mine? High end salon next to grovery stores

I got checked out driving home!!!

by sammyhercules

I must say that I am very satisfied with my experience and enjoyed my visit. The location staff are courteous and helpful. My stylist was very pleasant and she cut and styled my hair very much to my satisfaction. After I left the salon, I received several compliments from others at my workplace. Later on the same day, while driving on I880 with a friend, my friend noticed a couple of girls in an adjacent car checking me out (I didn't notice them as I had my eyes on the road!).

All things considered, I was very satisfied with my visit to AM and I will certainly come again.

Hey I really like going here, so give them a try.

by duartecharlie

The salon isn't trying to be somekind of high end metro sexual place. Just a place that guys can go to with all kinds of services. The haircut I get is always good to me...though I'm not looking for somekind of skaterboi or model runway look. It grows out right and the cost to me is reasonable for someone to take their time with me. It be a little more that some fast cuts places but I can get a free clean up in between my regular appointments The gals there have allot of experience and I can go to any one of them since they have records of how to cut my hair...that helps since I can get in there fairly easily that way. They also explain what they are using on my hair and what kind of products match me. To me they don't overly push it but just make sure I have the right kind of shampoo and stuff for my kind of hair.

So-So (not bad but not great), Be wary of the sales pressure to purchase the products they sell.

by missionimpossible

beforehand: i was intrigued and excited by the idea of a place where men can get good groomings services with minimal fuss and in a friendly environment.

After the cut: I was irritated by this place. You aren't allowed to get a typical $20 cut with no frills. In fact, they make you pay for the frills whether you want it or not. This makes it very expensive.

I felt this place was more about marketing and selling and using subtle pressure to push you into undesired services. That is what made the experience the most uncomfortable - I felt you could not really talk to the stylist about what was wanted or not. It is more about advertising the "American Male" phenomenon overall.

Granted, they use nice redken shampoo, the place is clean and comfortable and your hair smells good but those are all side things. The defining point of a salon/spa should be great quality haircuts and great quality main services - and that was just OK.

You should go here if you are looking for any of the following: 1) good smelling hair 2) you want something offered to you to drink 3) you want to waste a lot of cash on little to nothing 4) i don't think they really have the 100% guarantee 5) you want a clean environment 6) you like to browse men's magazines 7) you enjoy subtle sales pressures to buy products or get a full "quality grooming" package

you should not go here if you are looking for 1) comfortable and caring salonists 2) a great haircut with great style 3) reasonable pampering 4) to be relaxed (it's hard to relax when you feel it's all about marketing and advertising which is what they are really good at).

bottom line: i recommend going somewhere else and will not be going back to this place. it doesn't live up to the hype. The employees weren't very friendly and they seemed even more distant when they try to sell you hair products; it seemed as if they saw you as a giant wallet waiting to be milked dry.

i think i have to look elsewhere.

Pros: Clean, Well Lit, Comfortable Environment

Cons: High Sales Pressure, Mildly Apathetic Employees, Doesn't Live Up to the Hype

First time Facial. You'll expect more...

by rganyb

Good clean feeling about the waiting area. Like sitting in a guys room.
Not as hip as I was expecting.
But for the area in Mountian View, it seems to fit.
The service is Okay, they spent a lot of time on me.
I was expecting a more intense cleaning, but it was fairly gentle.
Straight talk from the aesthetician about what would work to keep smooth skin very good.

Pros: Quiet, centralized location.

Cons: commercial radio, other partons sometimes loud.

Great Experience

by chas1

I had been going to another salon for manicure's and pedicures for sometime now (about 2 years) and always found it to be just a tad unsanitary. It was one of the places that has incense burning and debris on the floor. I had mentioned to a friend of mine back east the I was going to a salon for this procedure and asked me if the instruments were being sanitized or did I bring my own. Not knowing if the thier instruments were being sanitized after each use made me wonder if going back was a good idea. I'm borderline diabetic and need to take proper care of my feet and need a place that will sterilize instruments on every use.

Upon entering American Male I felt like this was going to be a great experience. The environment was fabulous, bright and fresh and most of all very clean. We had gotten the manicure and pedicure combo and we were very much pleased that we were in a semi closed off room with a TV with remote. The staff that assisted us were cheery and attentive asking me if I wanted some cold water to drink. I was also pleased with the massage of my hands and feet it was definately a relaxing experience. There is not shadow of a doubt that we will be back and it's great to know that you have haircuttnig there as well.

WOW

by discodancer

I didn't think it was possible, but the stylist really made my husbands hair look good. She obviously knows hair magic. At work my husband was even told that he looks much younger with his new style. That made his day and mine too since I was the one who booked the appointment for him when I took my son in a week beforewhew!

I am so impressed with the salon. We are definitely going to continue using their services and will recommend to all of our friends. They run a very professional business.

My first of many visits was great

by skeetercraig

I was offered a beverage immediately after I arrived, and experienced absolutely no wait time before my stylist was ready for me. She was knowledgeable and friendly, taking care to discuss with me what I wanted in a haircut and orienting me to the American Male service (it was my first visit). My haircut looks great, and I will definitely be returning in the future. I have nothing but positive comments about their service and product.

Great Gift for My Man!

by lauranallove

I purchased a gift certificate for my boyfriend for Christmas! what a great present! He felt pampered and really enjoyed the privacy. He loved the massages and his hair cut was the best I have seen on him. For Valentine's Day I am going to get him a facial. I highly recommend American Male as a present for any Man in your life. So glad I found this business through Citysearch.

I personally think the whole concept is great.

by benrathod

I go to the American Male in Mountain View to take care of nails, eyebrows, and occassional sports massage. The whole staff is terrific.

I have recommended them to my friends, many of whom are getting married. If they don't go, well that's just stupid. Best of all, I don't have to go to a women's salon for this stuff anymore. It can be kind of awkward avoiding the glances.

Pros: all in one place, terrific people, upscale yet good $

Overpriced "Barberesque" Salon

by schor662

I ended up going to American Male for a haircut and "hand treatment" this morning. I first got in and had to wait fifteen minutes for the manucurist to get ready. It appeared that she had wore her sweats that she wore to sleep the night before. She then did my hands and she did an okay job, not really paying attention to what she was doing, but rather flapping her gums about everything. The manicure only lasted about fifteen minutes and as I'm typing this review two hours later, you can't even tell my nails have been manicured.
On the salon side of things, the "Master" Stylist started doing my hair and really didn't cut it shorter or anything, it is about the same way it was when I woke up this morning. I really didn't have an opinion in how to get my hair done.

Cons: Supercutsish, No Privacy, Overpriced

Found A Keeper

by mpsweetman

I have visited the salon twice, once in October and again yesterday, 21 November. I have been very pleased and impressed with the operation. The staff are friendly, professional and make you feel very comfortable. The location is convenient, very clean and very relaxing, which is great. I'm very impressed with the service / staff and will continue to return. Hopefully, I can get more time to try other services provided by the salon. They offer other services that I want to try (like getting my back waxed) but no way would I at a typical beauty parlor or nail shop. Martin S.

Pros: reasonably priced, speak english/listen, like the extras

I have been looking for a good salon for a while, i have been very un-happy with the haircuts i had been getting, and just communicating the the stylist was a problem.. But not at American Male, they did a great job, totally cut my hair the way i wanted and took care of me. It may seem pricey compared to other places but the cut, and the extra services are worth it. I have had facials and manicures before but i like the idea that you can get everything done in one place. I am sure i will be returning again and telling my friends about them.

Pros: one stop shopping, great stylists, great atmosphere

by pjsacino

I visited the salon on October 15 for the first time and was very impressed that the stylist suggested I just get a trim and save the major work for my next visit. She understood my goals for my hair and had several good ideas about caring for it. I look forward to my next visit.
