Spitz brings you a sandwich sensation unlike any other. Made from either minced lamb and beef, chicken, or homemade falafel, the meats are slow-roasted to perfection in custom vertical broilers, which allow their juices to percolate and self-infuse for a product of unmatched taste and texture. Only when you order is the meat shaved into paper-thin strips and stuffed into Panini-grilled focaccia bread or wraped in Panini-grilled lavash bread. Salad and plate options are also available. Don't leave without trying our amazing gelato, so good it was named "BEST IN THE UNIVERSE" by Time Magazine. Nearly everything we serve is HOMEMADE and HEALTHY. We use NO LARD and add NO FAT. We fry in 100% PURE CANOLA OIL, which has NO TRANS-FAT, and is donnated for bio-diesel fuels after its use.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
A longtime European street-food sensation, the Turkish-born doner kebab has been introduced to the Eastside at this little hipster joint near Occidental college. An airy room pops in sage, ochre and purple tones, and there's a sweet front patio with flowers and umbrellas. Behind a glass counter, minced lamb, beef and chicken slow-roast on custom vertical broilers percolating their juices and 12 spices. Paper thin strips are shaved off and stuffed into panini-toasted foccacia with veggies and tzatziki sauce.

Key Points

  • Home of Sweet Potato Fries
  • Award Winning Gelato
  • Heated outdoor patio

The Inside Scoop

  1. Parking - Odds are not great at snagging one of the three spots in front--look for curb parking on Colorado or College View.
  2. Save Money - Sandwich meals--classic, chicken, falafel or veggie--include a drink and choice of sides like fried pita strips with hummus, thin-cut fries, sweet potato fries or a salad.
  3. The Extras - Gourmet gelato is also available, with flavors like creme brulee, green tea, burgundy cherry and hazelnut espresso cheesecake. Additionally, there are fat-free sorbettos and organic coffee.

Falafel and Gyro House

by Teresa P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,727

Delicious falafel and gyro AND sweet potato fries! Can you ask for more? Well, they have excellent gellato too. I always get to go and call in bc the only dislike about Spitz is the service is a bit on the slower side.

Small restaurant in Eagle Rock, limited seating but the best kabobs you will find. Well seasoned meat, great feta and hummus and my kid's favorite gelato.

yummy meat

by Natalie L. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 255

This may be a Atkins' best friend- the meat here is SO good! It's very moist and well seasoned and there is a ton of variety. I've only had the grilled chicken plate, which was huge and filling! Everything else looks and smells great!

Great Sandwiches

by Jen B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 281

This little place just opened in Eagle Rock. There is very little seating inside, but the patio space outside is large and very inviting. The sandwiches are very good. I have had the chicken and would definitely recommend it. Try the sweet potato french fries, I know it sounds weird by they are really good. Now my favorite reason to keep these guys in business is the Gelato! They have a few flavors some are regulars and others will be rotating. The Sorbettos are interesting, I plan to try the pomegranite on my next visit. Parking is a little dicey but for now street parking seems readily available. Spitz actually has three parking spaces, one of which is a handicapped spot.

PROS: Only place in the area with sweet potato fries!
CONS: Parking, but the food more than makes up for any inconvenience.

A must try!

by Joan W.

This hip new Eagle Rock restaurant was started by two Oxy grads and offers some of the most tasty, unique sandwiches I have ever had. I have been twice and tried both the classic and the falaffel (both are made fresh daily) and was blown away by both. For dessert Spitz offers several flavors of sinfully good gelato. In short, if you're in the area, you just have to try this place out!

PROS: Great food, good prices, nice outdoor patio, good service

Best sandwich I have had in a long time!

by diablito

I finally broke down and decided to try to find parking by this lil interesting looking shack. I was met by a very friendly gentleman at the counter who advised me to check out the menu if this was my first time. I decided for the classic focaccia doner sandwich with sweet potato fries as a side. The meal comes in a small basket and is just the right size for lunch. The sandwich was amazing! The meats, the cucumbers, the tomatoes all tasted sooo fresh! The bread was light, tasty and just the right size to not overwhelm the other flavors. I was very impressed by the taste of the sauce they use. It's quite delicious yet not over the top, allowing all the flavors to come through. The service was great, especially if you consider it's set up like a lil burger shack. I am definately going back to try some more specialties!

Pros: The food and service were superb! They also offer KCRW discounts!

Cons: Parking can be a real pain around here!

Delicious!!!!!

by 242008

I just tried this place for the first time and I will definitely become a regular! I ordered the Falafelite, wow! It was so full of favor! Some vegetarian options at other places can be bland but wow everything at Spitz was exploding with flavor! If you like your food well seasoned then you'll love this place! The sweet potato fries were really good too! I ordered half fries, half sweet potato fries, which was a perfect combo of sweet and salty! Oh, and get a side of the greek yogurt sauce to dip your wrap and fries in!

Pros: Great food and fast & friendly service

Cons: Uneven floor on the outdoor dining patio

eh. hack!

by sounik1

So, the whole "european" spin on this place intrigued me so I had to check it out, It was ok. Nothing spectacular. What I found out later was that Doner is actually glorified Shawerma (which is middle eastern) except Doner is hyper processed meat with less spices: so, you're getting less quality in the meat & less flavor (except for the flavor provided by filler & fat which is processed into the meat.) After I found this out, I decided the one time I had Doner would be the last: now I'm sticking to Shawerma instead: it's not processed, it has fantastic spices, and it doesn't pretend it's "european." (what about Turkey is european anyways!? the roots are seljuk/mongol & the culture is just as closed as any other muslim culture!)

Very Delicious and Authentic!

by brandonlucas

If you have ever been to Germany, tried Turkish doner kabobs and craved it when you came back to the United States, this place is for you! It is very close to the experience I remember in Germany. Delicious! It is not quite as good as that first experience, but I still highly recommend it. Even if you haven't had doners before, it is worth trying something new. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: Savory food, good service.

Cons: Parking is limited, although last time I went I had no problem finding street parking.

jury is out

by mysticms

We have enjoyed sandwiches here before. The staff is always friendly and we found that the food is always fresh. The first falaful I had a year ago was alot better than the most recent but then everyone has a bad day once in a while in a restaurant. I will go back and will also try to compare it to Zancou Chicken falafuls.

Great food! Great people!

by janibanis06

We live in the area, and are always looking for new places to try out. So, when we saw Spitz in a small corner, hidden away behind some buganvelias, we knew we had to try it! I think we've tried everything on their menu, and my all time favorite is their chicken salad. It's full of yummie veggies like bell peppers, olives, cucumbers, tomoatoes, greens, red onions, grilled chicken and feta cheese. There's so much that you can't finish it in one sitting! The wraps are great too! The spicy feta is a treat. All in all, this is a healthy dining experience, with the exception of the sinfully delightful sweet potato fries. Yum!

Pros: Great service and food

Cons: Parking

Best Doner Kabob!!

by beautyspagoer

I heard about the best gelato in the universe so we decided to drive all the way to this small fast food place to have a taste. The food looked pretty good on website so we decided to try it! The drive was long and the parking was hard to find,..you pretty much have to park on the street....and the place is small,..you order up front and sit outside next to the street.....BUT the food was delicious!!! It is the best kabob I have ever tasted, not too salty or unhealthy,..just the right amount and the sides were really good too..fried pita bread with hummus,...yum!!! After the meal,..we were pretty full,...but can't leave without tasting the best gelato in the universe,...got the dark chocolate and almond almaretto,...it was the best! unique and thick flavors. The service was good too,..people are very nice. I would definently recommend going if you live in the area or just to try sometime. I wish there was one near me!

Pros: food, gelato, service

Cons: parking, busy area

Love it! Great Pita Chips and Hummus! The first wrap on the menu - I think its called a doner kabab or something - is just great. I've never had food like this before and I'm hooked. I recently moved about 10 miles east and I still drive back occasionally on the weekends.

I love it! It's just the right kind of food you need for the summer, just fresh and I can't get enough of the sweet potato fries! It leaves you satisfied. The only bad thing is the parking ,......it's so small. You have to park on the street and sometimes that street is so packed. I ended up at the sizzler's once.

Pros: you can't got wrong w/ anything that you order

Cons: parking

Soooo tasty!

by fittoac

Yesterday I was looking on Citysearch for a new lunch place to try and read these reviews about Spitz. It sounded tasty so I decided to try it out. The best way to sum up my experience is to say that I am going back there for lunch again today! I had the Classic sandwich with a side of pita strips. Both were absolutely amazing, and for all that plus a drink I spent less than $10! The sandwich has so much flavor! The pita strips are served warm, slightly crispy on the outside but soft on the inside, and lightly salted. The hummus that you dip them in is delicious as well. As soon as I left Spitz I called my sister to tell her she has to try it! There are only 2 parking spots plus a handicap spot so expect to park on the street. The service is very fast and the patio is pleasant. After only one visit they've made a loyal customer out of me!

Pros: Quick service, Delicious Food

Cons: Parking

Get the classic with sweet potato fries

by conchita666

Spitz is delicious. Good for a quick lunch or dinner. Definitely get the sweet potato fries...if you don't you will bummed or just another reason to go back. The food is fresh, simple, straight forward and no nonsense. There only a few items on the menu for good reason, they do them all well. Employees there are pleasant and laidback. They get your order right with a smile. Not that fake ronald smile either...I have to have the gelato...but i hear its good; I never have room. The classic is lip smackin good, you'll want to eat it slowly so it doesn't end. The lavosh holds all the ingredients in the sandwich so you can enjoy every morsel of goodness.

Pros: sweet potato fries, the menu, the classic

Cons: parking

Spitz is an amazing restaurant! I come here once a week for their healthy but flavorful doner kebabs and salads. Their gelato is also scrumptious...it is very thick and creamy. I really cannot think of a better place to get an $8.50 meal. What a deal!

Pros: Food, ambience, service, healthiness

Cons: Parking

The best sandwich and sweet potato fries I've ever had...no lie!

by kinglolo

There's a reason I'm starting to hear about people driving in from all over the city to check this place out. It is an incredible meal. I'm an Eagle Rock local, so yeah, maybe I'm a bit bias, but more than anthing, I feel lucky to have this gem so close. The Classic Donor (you have to go for extra sauce!!) is like nothing else in the city. Fresh, flavorsul and (best part) all natural, so you don't feel like sleeping or yelling at someone when you're done eating it. The falafel is incredible, too--my girlfriend always gets this and the crispy texture and combo of flavors is almost hypnotic. If you don't try the sweet potato fries, you're cheating yourself. These are all over back in the midwest, but like so many things in LA, these are nearly impossible to find and no one in my eight years out here has done them as good as Spitz. I'm seriously getting hungry typing this--going to order some right now.

I LOVE this place! You will too!

by jtiger

Eagle Rock surely has been a place to get some good eats. This place won't disappoint you. I've been here numerous times for lunch. I always get the Chicken Doner with all the fixins...just how it's suppose to be eaten! I recommend the sweet potato fries although the fried pita strips with hummus is good too. Just make sure you haven't eaten breakfast because it's very filling. The gelato is yummy and very smooth. Great selection of flavors and you're welcome to get samples. The guys that make the doners are very friendly and the staff is always helpful. Just try to get there early or have a late lunch because parking in slim!

Pros: delicious!!

Cons: parking

It was something different but sooooo goood! The meat was delicious and the bread was tasty! Yummy sauce too. I had the sweet potato fries and ate every last one! I was too stuffed to try the gelato, but next time I'll save half of my enormous sandwhich and have some!

Pros: Great food!

Cons: Parking might be a problem.

american doner for the rednecked jakeroo

by camusneedssometeeth

having lived in germany and england for extensive periods i have come to love a good old doner for lunch, late breakfast, after a night out at the boozer errr.. anytime really.
its laughable how this establishment was reviewed 14 times by people who have not reviewed anything else. this fact alone makes it seem a little fishy.
anyway, there is nothing turkish about this place. i suppose you could call taco bell mexican. but is it?
good look at reviewing your own place some more mr. owner.

Pure Tastiness

by djinfidel

I'm personally really impressed with the taste of the classic sandwich. Where it is spicy/zesty, it is also tastes refreshing and flavorful. Not to mention it is REALLY filling. I get a bit of food-coma every time I bite into one, but that doesn't stop me from getting a side order of those sweet potato fries. Maybe I'm a glutton, or maybe the food is really *that* good. As for the other items on the menu, I've had a little bit of everything and it all goes together really well. I applaud the owners for doing a fantastic job of putting together a menu that is both coherent and tasty. Parking and culture could use some improvement, I guess, but I've never had a problem finding a parking spot on Colorado right in front of the place. As for culture, it's a southern california fast food joint - what else can you possibly expect other than a melange of flavor and cultures? Anyway, awesome place!

Pros: The food

Cons: none

A very bad example of a doner

by cocteau

Went to eat a doner sandwhich for lunch it's the kind of doner that gives Turkish food a bad name. the kebab is served inside foccacia bread which is toasted it also contains salad. The quality of the meat itself is not good, it has a high fat content and is herbed. A good doner has a good balance of beef and lamb and should not contain any herbs. The meat looks like the ready made kind , and the people there don't have an inkling of Turkish food or kebab, it's just whatever.

Great food, bad parking!

by christy_buena

If you miss a good ol' Turkish doner, Spitz is the place to be. Parking is limited as there are only two spots, but you can leave your car at Sizzlers or park on the streets nearby. Compared to traditional uncut breads known in Europe, this restaurant slices their doners into Americanized sandwich slices. The fries here are crispy and fresh but their sweet potato fries are amazing. Try the gelato or ask for a free taste.

Pros: Only place to get Doners

Cons: Horrible parking

Spitz-fire fantastic

by alisonkramer

This place has delicious sandwiches at reasonable prices. My boyfriend and I split the original - finely shaved lamb/beef of foccacia with tomato, lettuce, spicy sauce and tzatziki - which came with a side (FRIES!!) and a drink for about 8 bucks. And... we were both stuffed. Gelato is good too, and they are quite liberal with their samples. THe only downside - waits can be long.

Pros: Sandwiches, Gelato

Cons: Service can be slow.

Best Sandwich I've ever had!!!

by alexmart

I've been to Spiz three times in the last week and every time I can't believe what an excellent product they serve. Everything on their menu is perfectly flavored and served. I had never tried Doner Kebab before, but I can see why it's so huge in Europe (or so the owners say). The patio is awesome both day and night (although I liked all the accent lighting at night), and the world-ecclectic music tops off the fun and relaxing atmosphere. Oh, and for dessert, they have the best gelato i've ever had, hands down! They owners said that they get it all the way from San Fransico because it was the only company they could find that doesn't mix any air into it, which is what gives it such amazing texture and flavor. And since they're open til 10 pm, I can definitely see myself going there just for a late-evening gelato with friens. Parking isn't great in the lot, but there's plenty on the street. Thank God someone finally got all the elements of a great restaurant without charging an arm and a leg! Can't wait to go back.

Pros: Great food, atmosphere, and service at very resasonable prices.

Cons: Parking isn't great, but it's easy to find spots on the street

Fantastic and Unique Experience.

by watson1990

Spitz is a fantastic place. It looks like a new, retro sandwich shop. It is right on Colorado in the middle of Eagle Rock. The sandwich's they serve (I got the classic) are both excellent and unique. The Doner Kebab is very much like a Gyro. It is roasted vertically and is a blend of beef and lamb. The seasoning is actually better and a little different than any Gyro I have tasted. They serve the meat with lettuce, tomato and cucumbers on thin grilled foccacia with a cucumber sauce and a chile sauce. They make both sauces in house. It is truly a high quality sandwich. I ordered mine with Sweet Potato fries that were great and a perfect compliment. They also serve a number of flavors of iced gelato (Italian ice cream) which I sampled, but was too full to order. Next time I'll save room and so should you. The flavors I tried (Bananas Foster and Tiramasu) were incredible. Upon return, I would get the Classic again, but they serve a chicken version and a falafel version too so take your pick. The owners Bryce and Robert are also great guys. I have nothing bad to say about Spitz. They even have a cool logo. You should check it out.

Pros: Great People, Great Food, Great Place

Cons: Small Parking Area, but spots easy to find on street.

A great new place in Eagle Rock

by bigla1978

The original sandwich is delicious & the staff is friendly and accomodating. Kind of reminds me of the really good gyros that you can get in Detroit or Chicago (or anywhere with a big Greek population), except they serve them on a cripy foccacia.

A welcome addition to the neighborhood!

Pros: Unique & good-tasting food

Cons: Kind of pricy

Savory Doner Kabab based on the Turkish tradition, converted into the Spanish staple that it is today, Spitz delivers! The classic combo is great, try it with either sweet-potato fries or my personal favorite, the Pita Fries with homemade humus. Delicious!
The place is trendy and funky and has a friendly atmosphere. The outside seating is great and the parking is plentifull.

Pros: inexpensive, fun, good food

There is no doubt about it, Spitz makes a killer sandwich. I've never had donor kebab before, but this is awesome. Panini toasted focaccia, amazingly good (and fresh) meat, you must try this place! Not a lot of indoor seating but a really nice patio. Next time you're in Eagle Rock check it out for lunch or a latenight snack :) PS - They let you taste their out of this world gelato for free as well, tasty tasty!
