My boyfriend and I on Sunday (Sept. 30, 2012) turned up at the Holtsville Ecology Site and Zoo donned in blue shirts to show our support for the zoo. It didn't seem like this effort is enough to keep it open. Here is what my sister's suggestion is for the park and zoo. Maybe her ideas could be useful: "Wait, they don't charge a fee? That's ridiculous and completely unsustainable. Everyone on LI is complaining about their taxes (rightfully so, the highest in the country) so, of course, if this is funded entirely by taxes it will be a target bc it's not a necessity. I don't know enough about this but if that's the case it's just naive to expect it to continue. There are solutions but it doesn't seem like anyone is pursuing that. Just complaining that it is unjust and unfair to close it will not do the job. They could charge a fee and/ or put a put a development department in place that could seek private donations or find a large corporate sponsor. They could partner with a larger establishment like the Bronx Zoo, NY Aquarium or a University as a satellite learning environment. This place employs people. People should be fighting to build awareness and keep this thing going."

I love the ecology center, I walk the trail, bring my grandaughter to the zoo . I was saddened and surprised when I heard that the town is thinking of closing it down. I had a feeling something was going on when they no longer accepted grass and leaves. If it's due to econmics then they should charge a small fee for the zoo in stead of donations, i donate whenever we go, but I'm sure alot of people don't. if your not a resident of Brookhaven township then a small fee for parking . Or everyone pays a small fee to park. a dollar or two. two per person for the zoo. it would still be a great deal. But not too much that people won't come. They charge to park at the beach, why not here? That may be the only way to keep it open. Think of something !

My family and I have love Holtsville Park for years! The kids have taken swimming lessons there, we've had large picnic gatherings there, the playground and animal preserve are incredible.... everything was terrific UNTIL I received a texted photo from a friend last year who was walking the exercise track (another great feature!). The caption read: "Look What They Did To Our Favorite Park!". I was surprised to see the all the wonderful shade trees surrounding the playground were GONE! What brought that on? I;m no tree expert, but they didn't LOOK diseased. Why get rid of them, as they were not only beautiful, they served as much needed shade for the playground goers and picnicers. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've been going to the park for a couple of years now. Everything had been great until today when a "White American Citizen" called my son a piece of s h i t , because he got on her way when she was riding a bike. When confronted she said that" Ilegals were taking over "her park"' and we did not speak the language, according to her we "Ecuadorians or wherever they come from" as she said had no right to be there and that Obama should send us back. I feel very insulted and plan not to go there anymore and tell friends no to do it either.
Wouldn't you feel insulted if somebody would yelled at u or someone you love: GO BACK HOME YOU PIECE OF
S H I T.

I was so happy when I found Holtsville Park. The small zoo is just the right size for young children. My daughter is 5 and she enjoys feeding the animals. As a matter of fact, we're going today. We plan to have a small picnic as well. Holtsville Park is a rare find. Most people on Long Island have never heard of it. Once they find it, they're glad they did.

With so many family entertainment choices charging an arm and a leg, the Ecology Center is a true bargain. The animal area, inhabited by wildlife rescues who cannot be rehabilitated to the wild, is free, though donations are accepted. The enclosures are well kept, though the informational signage is a bit worn and dated.

My 7 year old loved feeding the goats, listening to the various bird calls (the center is heavy on birds) and trying to spot the mountain lion (asleep behind a rock). It took about an hour to see all the animals on a sunny winter Saturday.

What a great place - there is something for everyone. There is a small zoo - goats and sheep for children to feed and all sorts of domestic and exotic animals, including 2 bears, mountain lions, bald eagles and many others. These are rescued animals that were hurt and cannot be released into the wild. The there is an ecology education center and free compost for gardeners. Best of all, there is a one mile trail for walking, jogging or bike riding.

PROS: Jogging Trail, Zoo
CONS: They close too early
