They use some sketchy sales tactics.

I had gone through a "lost weekend" I heard the ads and called. My costs would have been so high. The saleslady went from nice and sympathetic to all about "closing her sale" once I had my insurance checked out.

They should be ashamed of tying to sell recovery. Then they kept calling and calling back trying to close that sale. I finally blocked the number after 5 calls. After the second phone message of my unfortunate situation, I actually drank more. I finally got the help elsewhere. When I was ready.

They may help some, but don't let them fool you that it's not all about the money.

Plan on starting treatment Mar 22. A little scared of the aversion therapy but need to turn off the craving. It's stronger than me. I'll get back to you and by the way, all the reviews were helpful in their own way.

1st of ALL:whatever A-HOLE said the staff sucked & didnt speak ENGLISH:You are ignorant.Who CARES what 'color' someone is:ESPECIALLY when all they care about is helping YOU?They ALL speak English:are so sweet, helpful & KIND.Isabella,(housekeeping)-brought every one of us patients a stocking w/ candy on Christmas morning. No matter how many times a day u pass them in the halls:They ALWAYS say,'Hello; How are you today'-W/ a loving smille.
The program ROCKS.Been to 2 other 30 day programs-This is the 1st rehab I've left w/ absloutely NO desire to drink. Its like alcohol doesnt even EXIST.I truly thot I was one person that may not ever be able to quit.1st time I've ever left rehab w/out the CRAVING;.Got great tools at other places..But SSH gave me tools AND erased my cravings for alcohol.Completely.
The staff CAN seem to be a bit disorganized @ times-But nothing that affected my program in any way; They are dealing w/ up to 62 alcoholics/drug addicts at a time-& trying to keep the intakes from falling on the floor, dealing w/ sometimes demanding patients,TONS of details,etc..& yet they somehow manage to always make sure u have your meds on time, that u are scheduled for your treatments properly-AND:They truly CARE about each & every one of us.(I can honestley SAY:There is only ONE nurse that i didnt care for-The REST:ANGELS from HEAVEN :).
I am so sorry to hear of the gal down belows husband passing away after treatment.I need to say:That the program doesnt work by itSELF:U must WANT to get clean;Put your ALL into the program;& have an AFTERCARE plan.(Not saying he didn't;But I think its more rare than common that someone has to go back to SS 3x's;Maybe he had some severe under-lying issues that he was unaware of?).
my favorite part was that they treated me like a person/adult-U can bring your laptop, cell, etc. They dont follow u around nagging at u to do anything:EXCEPT take care of yourself & rest after your treatments.U can have visitors from 9-9-& they dont care if u want to snuggle w/ your spouse on your bed for 2 hrs-miss a meeting due to having a visitor..They sort of leave it up to YOU to do what theyve laid out for you.Which is a fu**ing GREAT program!
Yep:Puking sucks. But its only 1/3rd of your time spent there.U learn to power thru it-& its EFFECTIVE.And the 'sleepies'-They give u a sort of 'truth serum' every other day, give u positive re-inforcements,ask u ?'s that allow u to see how well u are progressing. They're awesome. And relaxing!
The lectures r not 'lectures'-Just good information, tools, and usually fun.The meetings are nowhere NEAR 12 step ,religion-based-No rehashing of same old negative stories told over & over again-Just a bunch of people just like you & I,talking about what has worked for them, asking ?'s & getting answers-And again:pretty fun.In my experience:NOTHING like AA meetings...(No offense meant here-Just MY opinion-I know AA works for a lot of people-Just is not for me,personally ;).
One of the BEST things about this place is the people you meet while there-They're all in the same boat as you, everybody is done 'hiding'-You can just be yourself,w/out judgement-& everyone supports eachother SO much; I can honestley SAY:I met some of the most AMAZING people-That i truly LOVE...At least a handful that will probably be lifelong friends, just after spending a few days together....
They dont accept 'court ordered' patients-So everyone there REALLY wants to get better-No negativity anywhere.Just a lot of laughter,(SOME commiserating about the Duffys-Which really arent THAT bad & they wont KILL ya ;)-& positive energy.
I have not been this happy & joyful in 10 years.I cant believe how great it feels to be sober-And not even feel like im missing out on anything!!!Alcohol sounds disGUSTING:No joke.
I was drinking a 1/5th of vodka-at least-everyday-for at least 3 yrs..NEVER thot i could not only manage w/out it-Did NOT ever think i could not even CRAVE the stuff.
If you are considering going to SS-I'm BEGGING you:DO IT!It WILL save your life if you really want it to.Yeah:it was tough-But it WORKS.
And NO:I do NOT work for SS:NOR do i believe the dum*** who said 'these reviews are written by SS themselves'-(BTW:I have 2 little ones-& PLENTY of things I COULD be getting done rt now, instead of taking the time to write this-)-I am just a regular person;as I'll BET- are the REST of the people here:Who it simply WORKED for,& feel the need to share it w/ anybody who is as scared, depressed, hopeless as i felt not too long ago.Ive never written a review in my LIFE:But this is one experience that I would have been absolutely selfish not to share.
Find the $ ANY way u CAN-And just get yourself to the check-in desk...From there, your life will become beautiful ,happy & *JOYFUL* again. And YOU will be in control of your life again-Instead of *IT* controlling* YOU* ...

After reading these reviews I am more confused than before I "Googled" it. I have a feeling that half the reviews are from Shick Shadel...still lost here....I feel sorry for the people that really need help and are doing online research to try and find it. Obviously, through the reviews here it isn't going to happen...ho hum

It works.
I have been through 3 30 day 12 step programs Including Betty Ford (twice). I left them and had been drunk within hours.

Shick Shadel is different in that they "do something" They give you the aversion to alcohol that no-one else does and that makes the difference. It allows you the chance for you to realize what you are missing.

They are the only operation that I am aware of that has an ACTIVE followup program. Daily phone meetings and daily e-mails.
They invite you to come back and visit after you graduate.

With that said,If you are not ready to stop drinking nothing will help you, Not even prison (they make booze in the toilets-google pruno)

However if you are ready to quit this is the place.

And the amenities at Shick Shadel are better than at the "fancy places" computers, cell phones, real coffee, books, televisions, visitors when you want them, instead of just 4 hours on Sunday

Schick will work if you follow the program. The first 10 days is only the start. I agree with the people who say they mislead on the advertising. It is exactly what you want to believe but it's not really true. Once you're in the program you are told that if you want to succeed in staying sober, you must do the continued care and your homework. That being said, I have no regrets on completing my 10 days at Schick. It has worked for me for 1 year and 1 day so far. The staff is excellent. The food is good. The rooms are adequate. The only problem I had was with the billing. Make sure you have your terms in writing. It's a business and prices are negociable. So make sure you get everything in writing and don't be shy about making sure EXACTLY what you are paying. I would recommend you demand a "NOT TO EXCEED" amount on your personal responsibility amount. The billing department at Schick is all business so take my advise and avoid a misunderstanding. I was aware of several during my short stay.
You're going to need aftercare so don't fool yourself into thinking 10 days and everything is A. O.K. Shick helps by getting you over the first hurdle. Then you are in the Continued Care program with Alfred which is essential. I needed even more help to get myself to stay sober and thats where everyone is different. You may not need to do what I do to stay sober. Schick gives you a sober window to figure that out your plan and only you know what works for you.
So if you're thinking about Schick... IT WORKS if you want it to. It's not a cure but it can be part of a solution to staying sober.

It's been over 20 years since I went to Schick in Houston, the hospital that provided the program closed, which is a shame because it really does work. Going through it was not easy, I dreaded the "duffy days", and was always worried about what I revealed in sleep therapy, but I can honestly say it was worth it.

When I checked in I was at the end of my rope with drug addiction... My entire life was falling down around me. Without the help of the amazing people at Schick Shadel, it would have or I would have ended things myself. After 10 days there, and a lot work on my part, I left my addiction in the past. Shick gave me sobriety and with that I was able to save my job, home, relationships with friends and family. Furthermore, Schick gave me the tools to handle daily stresses and to help in my personal growth. Now I am 4 years clean and sober and have moved significantly forward with my life. No longer do I define myself by my weaknesses and failures, but by my strengths and successes. Thank you to all the people at Schick...

As for the food, rooms, etc, the food was good, rooms were comfortable. The billing folks were super and worked with me completely. Every person there was remarkable and I thank God every day for Schick Shadel.

Their billing specialists are going to mess it up. And at the end of the treatment, you are going to get at least one additional bill for $600. that no one tells you about.

Beware!!!!

By the way, the treatment works and I recommend it.

I went to the Schick Santa Barbara facility (it's gone now) in 1981 and haven't had a drink since. Of course it's hard on you but the alternative is worse. You have to truly want to quit to make it (or anything else for that matter) work. It's not some magic bullet. If your spouse, significant other or family is pressuring you, and you go just satisfy them it won't work. I saw people there who were back for their 2nd or 3rd time because their son, daughter, wife or husband made them do it. They didn't want to quit and they're probably all dead by now from the thing their family tried to save them from. There could be deeper psychological issues involved that aversion therapy won't help no matter how many times they go back. For those who commented that their husbands went back a number of times, did you give them positive support or just keep nagging/stressing them? I don't know about the Seattle facility but the Santa Barbara facility was clean and well run. Apparently "Anonymous" has some racist/bigot issues, but I found the mixed race staff to be absolutely great. I got my life back and it's been great ever since. Thanks Schick!!

I can honestly say that I do not have anything negative to say about Schick.
1) Schick took the craving away. Schick was amazingly patient working with my insurance. I would have found a way to pay twice as much in cash to get my life back.
2) As for the Aversion therapy, yep, they make you puke. And it makes stop doing it to yourself. What a blessing it is to wake up and feel good.
3) To Mr. Anonymous, with the comment on the ethnicity of the nurses, you need a lobotomy. All of the staff, Kitchen, Housekeeping, Nurses and Counselors were all dedicated to helping me get well.
4) The food was good and the staff kind and helpful with special needs and requests.
5) Old building, yeah so what, you're there to get well On the flip side you can continue using and lose your house and pick out a nice cardboard box to live in
6) Here is the deal. It works and it was a lot easier than living the rest of my life physically and mentally addicted to alcohol. I couldn't believe how amazing I felt when I left last December, I can't tell you how many times I told myself..okay I'm not going to drink too much again, I don't want to be in this much pain and misery again. How many times have you prayed to God to please take the pain away? Well. Schick did take the pain away. If you truly want to be free of your demon, give Schick the opportunity to help you. Does the money really matter, how much is your life worth?

Husband, alcoholic 30 years, went to Schick. Went all of 52 days without a drink (and that's including the 13 days he was there for detox and treatment). Got LAID OFF about 38 days out of Shick and went straight to the LIQUOR STORE. That was two weeks ago, I called Schick "Bring him back in, it's only 8 thousand this time for 6 days and you are still covered". Mind you they still have not sent a claim to insurance. He is refusing treatment. Gee, THANKS PAT! What a big fat waste of $20k

I'm 19 years old, I've been in & out of rehabs for years suffering from my addiction to oxycontion & countless other substances. I went to Schick Shadel broken, lost & hopeless. 5 days of torture to compensate for the Torture I've put MYSELF, ENTIRE FAMILY & ALL My Friends through. My addiction was making me slowly committing suicide, But After 10 days at Schick Shadel, My Cravings are GONE. Something I never would've imagined possible. I couldn't quit to save my life, to stop my mother from sobbing or seeing my baby sister lose her respect for her big sister.
THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH SCHICK SHADEL & ALL THE STAFF THERE. Jerome Saved my life. Along with JJ & Diane, the best nurses.
I hate to say it, but I'm excited for my recaps :]
They turned the receptor Off. It's just my job to Keep it Off.
they do 95% of the work. I just have to keep up my 5%.

I can't wait to live the life I've always dreamnt of, ALL thanks to you Schick.

I am a graduate of Schick Shadel and had a good experience for the most part and am a person of color. However, I do understand all sides of the race issue. I actually believe it would help Schick Shadel Hospital in their marketing if there were a few people of color on the testimonials. At times when a person can't see anyone that looks like him/her it can make a difficult ride. I also understand a person should be more concerned about their treatment than what the sfaff looks like. With that said try putting yourself in the other persons shoes. If the facility had 90% of it's staff of color and you were the opposite color would you not feel a bit cautious? We still have a long way to go with race issues but overall I think Schick Shadel is a great place to get treatment!

I am a "graduate" of Schick Shadel Hospital & I have mixed feelings about my experience. First, it was "TORTURE" in terms of the "aversion" therapy..basically you are given medicine to puke your guts out, while trying not to piss & poop on yourself at the same time! If you like to "Beat the "F" out of yourself for making bad choices & turning to alcohol/drugs for comfort..it is the place to go. I have been throughout the majority of my life, enjoyed some form of "self-loathing/self hatred" for choices I have made, so at the time it felt like the place to be..right up my alley! But, at the end of the day..or days I should say, when you pull out of the parking lot..you are on your own.3 years later, the only thing I really gained from my experience is now when I have drinks..even when I have not over-indulged..I end up with my head in the toilet. It is not a safe/healthy way to quit the insanity..trust me. I do however, must give the staff thumbs up, or at least the majority of staff. Gary my counselor of choice totally "rocks" He without a doubt is one of the most insightful humans I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Actually i am surprised that he has limited his counseling knowledge to Schick. Dr. Smith whom I have found out recently passed on, without being disrespectful should have retired long before I attended to hospital. He was clearly disoriented, when he wasn't wearing his "Dr's" hat. It was apparent his age had caught up to his professional capabilities. The nursing staff was very supportive..and the food, not too bad..But all in all, "IF IT"S TOO GOOD TOO BE TRUE..IT IS"

I didn't have a problem with the nurses (although they seem overworked and disorganized) but I did have a problem with Shick's advertising.

This place promotes a cure. If you don't believe me listen to the lectures and you can see cure written all over the place. My insurance company did not pay as regence considered their treatment experimental. The research they have was done many years ago. Why is it that many of the clients there had been there a few times before. No one could give me an answer about that.

Why can you hear the staff use profanity?????? I am not a prude but it seems unprofessional to hear profanity from the staff.

Pat O'Day and Jerry are sales people. The treatment approach isn't effective and it seems unfortunate that the one-starred review is being trashed as people DID fall down in the halls for getting too much sleep meds. I FELL DOWN. I was given a very strong med and was asleep most of the day.

The food sucked and the beds were uncomfortable. The best counselors are gary and jerome. Andrew Winstad (a real jerk) needs to find a different job. The woman who has her office next to the jerry needs to stop yelling.
The staff never looked like they were in a good mood.

Dr. Smith was very nice and had an excellent bedside manner. Dr. Merchant was very bright and was a little forceful with his approach. he is a good doctor tho.

Lota and Olga were great. I liked Yolanda and Looz. John (the admit guy) was very nice and comforting when I came in.

Schick is very good...as a short term fix. Do not buy into the hype that all you need is 10 days. If you look at the reviews you see cure all over the place. It seems that many of these people are dry drunks.

i am not impressed and will not recommend this place to my friends.

I just came across this review and had to voice my opinion. Obviously the anonymous patient is severely clouded visually and mental judgements are distorted!Every employee at Schick Shadel Hospital speaks and writes English. This World is filled with every "Color". Obviously you have an issue with people that do not have the same color as you! What a shame! If you took part in "YOUR Treatment you would of know where you were suppose to be and doing what at what time! What an idiot! Hearsay and ACTAL facts are two toally different things.Schick Shadel Hospital's treatment does work. Threw the Aversion Therapy and the sedation therapy the receptor is shut down and the cravings for the drink/drug are removed. I treated at Schick Shadel Hospital over a year ago and I have never had one craving for alcohol since Jan 14th 2008! I gave Schick Ten days and they gave me my life back!

The facility needs a remodel, and is getting it done a bit at a time.

The staff was great. The guy who commented on the race of the nurses must be a real jerk. Everyone was great, nurses, counselors, food service, cleaning etc.

They absolutely eliminated my cravings for alcohol, after drinking for 38 of my 54 years. It was fast, effective, and you feel like a patient, not a prisoner. You can use your cell, laptop, whatever. You can go out on the deck, walk around. The structure is around treatment and education.
It can seem a bit disorganized I guess, but it always works out.

I made a lot of friends and still talk to them. The only thing I regret is waiting so long to go there.

Schick Shadel's alcohol treatment program is fast and effective. I was able to beat my alcohol addiction while I continued working remotely. No one knew about it but me and the insurance company that paid the bill.
I'd recommend the Schick Shadel alcohol treatment plan to anyone who prefers a fast medical treatment to the endless 12 step nonsense.

I have been to Schick Shadel for alcohol and it has been about four years now. It works! Sure, I have had problems but the alcohol craving is gone. The staff were great and very helpful to me. What a stupid remark that had been made about the nurses. Whoever you are get a life....obviously you were not ready to accept the fact that you needed some help. Too bad, if you would have gotten past looking for things going wrong and the color of someone's skin you could have worked on yourself and been happier today.

I am recommending this facility to any body that asks me if there is a place to go for help. It was comfortable and I was treated like a person. Georgia F.

We've battled A's alcohol problem for years but this is the first place that she found where she could battle it and win. Chemical aversion is a shock to the system, disgusting on several levels, and the ONLY thing that has long lasting results. In addition, there's none of the religious goop that's typical of 12 step programs.

Yes, the facility could use some remodelling, yes, there were a few glitches with staff members, but the most important issue - treatment of my sister and her individual problem - makes all else worthwhile.

Incidentally, western Washington is a refreshingly diverse part of the world. Aren't you glad you're not related to the dork who complained about the race/culture of the nurses? Sheesh.

Thank you, Schick Shadel.

At the end of the day the fact is the treatments are severe but they work. Although at times things seemed disorganized I left with no cravings. The system works.10 days and I came home free of alcohol. If you have a problem you know it. The program at ten days was perfect for me and the results were also. After the two follow ups there are no meetings like the 12 step or other long programs that remind you that you are an addict. The treatments are totally private. I left with some really great new friends, and at 47 that is really a great thing. I left a non user. I can at 47 years old now look forward to remembering the life I lead and not regretting it.

The nursing staff was overworked. And the worst part is that most of them did not speak English. It looked like a Filipino convention. The right hand certainly did not know what the left hand was doing. Once when I was supposed to be in one sort of treatment, they pulled me out and said I should have been in another.
And the worst part of all, those patients who got to have "sleepy time" that day looked like they were drunk the rest of the day. I heard that people have even fallen down in the halls.

Schick Shadel Hospital has been in the business of treating substance abuse for over 65 years. The results are relevant by the hundreds of substance free patients and from he fact that the current owner is himself a recovering alcoholic who treated at Schick. If you know someone in need of help dealing with a substance addiction check out the web site www.schickshadel.com or give them a call and talk with the staff. Don't let another day of substance addiction rob you of living.

PROS: High Success Rates
CONS: Older facility, but getting a remodel
